Implications of a DK Molecule at 2.32 GeV

We discuss the implications of a possible quasinuclear DK bound state at 2.32 GeV. Evidence for such a state was recently reported in D_s^+pi^o by the BaBar Collaboration. We first note that a conventional quark model c-sbar assignment is implausible, and then consider other options involving multiquark systems. An I=0 c sbar n nbar baryonium assignment is one possibility. We instead favor a DK meson molecule assignment, which can account for the mass and quantum numbers of this state. The higher-mass scalar c-sbar state expected at 2.48 GeV is predicted to have a very large DK coupling, which would encourage formation of an I=0 DK molecule. Isospin mixing is expected in hadron molecules, and a dominantly I=0 DK state with some I=1 admixture could explain both the narrow total width of the 2.32 GeV state as well as the observed decay to D_s^+ pi^o. Additional measurements that can be used to test this and related scenarios are discussed.

Exotics and all that

This invited contribution summarizes some of the more important aspects of exotics. We review theoretical expectations for exotic and nonexotic hybrid mesons, and briefly discuss the leading experimental candidate for an exotic, the pi_1(1600).

Dissociation cross sections of ground-state and excited charmonia with light mesons in the quark model

We present numerical results for the dissociation cross sections of ground-state, orbitally- and radially-excited charmonia in collisions with light mesons. Our results are derived using the nonrelativistic quark model, so all parameters are determined by fits to the experimental meson spectrum. Examples of dissociation into both exclusive and inclusive final states are considered. The dissociation cross sections of several C=(+) charmonia may be of considerable importance for the study of heavy ion collisions, since these states are expected to be produced more copiously than the J/psi. The relative importance of the productions of ground-state and orbitally-excited charmed mesons in a pion-charmonium collision is demonstrated through the $\sqrt {s}$-dependent charmonium dissociation cross sections.

DMRG Study of Critical Behavior of the Spin-1/2 Alternating Heisenberg Chain

We investigate the critical behavior of the S=1/2 alternating Heisenberg chain using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). The ground-state energy per spin and singlet-triplet energy gap are determined for a range of alternations. Our results for the approach of the ground-state energy to the uniform chain limit are well described by a power law with exponent p=1.45. The singlet-triplet gap is also well described by a power law, with a critical exponent of p=0.73, half of the ground-state energy exponent. The renormalization group predictions of power laws with logarithmic corrections can also accurately describe our data provided that a surprisingly large scale parameter is present in the logarithm.

Mott Effect and J/Psi Dissociation at the Quark-Hadron Phase Transition

We investigate the in-medium modification of pseudoscalar and vector mesons in a QCD motivated chiral quark model by solving the Dyson-Schwinger equations for quarks and mesons at finite temperature for a wide mass range of meson masses, from light (pi, rho) to open-charm (D, D*) states. At the chiral / deconfinement phase transition, the quark-antiquark bound states enter the continuum of unbound states and become broad resonances (the hadronic Mott effect). We calculate the in-medium cross sections for charmonium dissociation due to collisions with light hadrons in a chiral Lagrangian approach, and show that the D and D* meson spectral broadening lowers the threshold for charmonium dissociation by pi and rho meson impact. This leads to a step-like enhancement in the reaction rate. We suggest that this mechanism for enhanced charmonium dissociation may be the physical mechanism underlying the anomalous J/Psi suppression observed by NA50.

Anomalous J/psi suppression and charmonium dissociation cross sections

We study $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at CERN-SPS energies in hadronic matter with energy- and temperature-dependent charmonium dissociation cross sections calculated in the quark-interchange model of Barnes and Swanson. We find that the variation of J/$ψ$ survival probability from peripheral to central collisions can be explained as induced by hadronic matter absorption in central collisions.

Hadronic Spectral Function and Charm Meson Production

At the chiral restoration/deconfinement transition, most hadrons undergo a Mott transition from being bound states in the confined phase to resonances in the deconfined phase. We investigate the consequences of this qualitative change in the hadron spectrum on final state interactions of charmonium in hot and dense matter, and show that the Mott effect for D-mesons leads to a critical enhancement of the J/Psi dissociation rate. Anomalous J/Psi suppression in the NA50 experiment is discussed as well as the role of the Mott effect for the heavy flavor kinetics in future experiments at the LHC. The status of our calculations of hadron-hadron cross sections using the quark interchange and chiral Lagrangian approaches is reviewed, and an Ansatz for a unification of these schemes is given.

The Role of Produced Hadrons in J/psi Suppression

Hadrons produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can suppress the production of J/psi and other charmonium states by charmonium spontaneous dissociation as the hot hadronic environment alters the interaction between the charm quark and charm antiquark. Furthermore, hadrons can thermalize a charmonium to excite it to higher charmonium states which subsequently dissociate spontaneously. They can also collide with a charmonium to lead to its prompt dissociation into an open charm pair.

Strong Decays of Strange Quarkonia

In this paper we evaluate strong decay amplitudes and partial widths of strange mesons (strangeonia and kaonia) in the 3P0 decay model. We give numerical results for all energetically allowed open-flavor two-body decay modes of all nsbar and ssbar strange mesons in the 1S, 2S, 3S, 1P, 2P, 1D and 1F multiplets, comprising strong decays of a total of 43 resonances into 525 two-body modes, with 891 numerically evaluated amplitudes. This set of resonances includes all strange qqbar states with allowed strong decays expected in the quark model up to ca. 2.2 GeV. We use standard nonrelativistic quark model SHO wavefunctions to evaluate these amplitudes, and quote numerical results for all amplitudes present in each decay mode. We also discuss the status of the associated experimental candidates, and note which states and decay modes would be especially interesting for future experimental study at hadronic, e+e- and photoproduction facilities. These results should also be useful in distinguishing conventional quark model mesons from exotica such as glueballs and hybrids through their strong decays.

A neutron scattering study of two-magnon states in the quantum magnet copper nitrate

We report measurements of the two-magnon states in a dimerized antiferromagnetic chain material, copper nitrate (Cu(NO3)2*2.5D2O). Using inelastic neutron scattering we have measured the one and two magnon excitation spectra in a large single crystal. The data are in excellent agreement with a perturbative expansion of the alternating Heisenberg Hamiltonian from the strongly dimerized limit. The expansion predicts a two-magnon bound state for q ~ (2n+1)pi*d which is consistent with the neutron scattering data.

Boundaries, Cusps and Caustics in the Multimagnon Continua of 1D Quantum Spin Systems

The multimagnon continua of 1D quantum spin systems possess several interesting singular features that may soon be accessible experimentally through inelastic neutron scattering. These include cusps and composition discontinuities in the boundary envelopes of two-magnon continuum states and discontinuities in the density of states, "caustics", on and within the continuum, which will appear as discontinuities in scattering intensity. In this note we discuss the general origins of these continuum features, and illustrate our results using the alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain and two-leg ladder as examples.

Hadron 2001 Conference Summary: Theory

This contribution reviews some of the theoretical issues and predictions that were discussed at HADRON2001. The topics are divided into principle areas, 1) exotics, 2) vectors, 3) scalars, and 4) higher-mass states. The current status of theoretical predictions for each area are summarized, together with a brief description of experiment. New and detailed experimental results are presented in the companion Experimental Summary by Klempt.

Heavy flavor kinetics at the hadronization transition

We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium breakup processes due to the Mott effect for light (pi, rho) and open-charm (D, D*) quark-antiquark bound states at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. The Mott effect for the D-mesons effectively reduces the threshold for charmonium breakup cross sections, which is suggested as an explanation of the anomalous J/psi suppression phenomenon in the NA50 experiment. Further implications of finite-temperature mesonic correlations for the hadronization of heavy flavors in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.

Hadron-Hadron Scattering in the Nonrelativistic Quark Model

In this HADRON2001 contribution we summarize the status of our quark-model calculations of hadron-hadron scattering amplitudes in annihilation-free channels. The predictions are in reasonably good agreement with experimentally known S-wave meson-meson and meson-baryon phase shifts, and there are very recent indications that S-wave pi-omega scattering (extracted from FSIs in b_1 decay) may also be similar to our predictions. Finally, novel applications of this formalism to the dissociation cross sections of charmonia on light hadrons (relevant for QGP studies at RHIC) are discussed.

Heavy Quarkonium Dissociation Cross Sections in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

Many of the hadron-hadron cross sections required for the study of the dynamics of matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions can be calculated using the quark-interchange model. Here we evaluate the low-energy dissociation cross sections of $J/ψ$, $ψ'$, $χ$, $Υ$, and $Υ'$ in collision with $π$, $ρ$, and $K$, which are important for the interpretation of heavy-quarkonium suppression as a signature for the quark gluon plasma. These comover dissociation processes also contribute to heavy-quarkonium suppression, and must be understood and incorporated in simulations of heavy-ion collisions before QGP formation can be established through this signature.

Hybrid Baryons, a brief review

This contribution is a brief review of the status of hybrid baryons, which are hypothetical baryons that incorporate a gluonic excitation. We first summarize the status of hybrid mesons, since this closely related topic has seen considerable recent activity with the identification of two exotic candidates. Next we review theoretical expectations for the masses and quantum numbers of hybrid baryons, which have come from studies of the bag model, QCD sum rules and the flux tube model. Finally hybrid baryon experiment is discussed, including suggestions for experimenters at COSY.

MESON2000 Conference Summary

This short contribution is a {\it lite} MESON2000 conference summary. As appropriate for the 600th anniversary of the Jagellonian University, it begins with a brief summary of the last 600 years of European history and its place in hadron physics. Next a ``physicist chirality'' order parameter PC is introduced. When applied to MESON2000 plenary speakers this order parameter illustrates the separation of hadron physicists into disjoint communities. The individual plenary talks in MESON2000 are next sorted according to the subconference associated with each of the 36 plenary speakers. Finally, I conclude with a previously unreported Feynman story regarding the use of models in hadron physics.
