Entanglement and Entropy in a Spin-Boson Quantum Phase Transition

We investigate the entanglement properties of an ensemble of atoms interacting with a single bosonic field mode via the Dicke (superradiance) Hamiltonian. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition and a well-understood thermodynamic limit, allowing the identification of both quantum and semi-classical many-body features in the behaviour of the entanglement. We consider the entanglement between the atoms and the field, an investigation initiated in [N. Lambert, C. Emary and T. Brandes, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, %073602 (2004)]. In the thermodynamic limit, we give exact results for all entanglement partitions and observe a logarithmic divergence of the atom-field entanglement, and discontinuities in the average linear entropy.

Shot noise spectrum of superradiant entangled excitons

The shot noise produced by tunneling of electrons and holes into a double dot system incorporated inside a p-i-n junction is investigated theoretically. The enhancement of the shot noise is shown to originate from the entangled electron-hole pair created by superradiance. The analogy to the superconducting cooper pair box is pointed out. A series of Zeno-like measurements is shown to destroy the entanglement, except for the case of maximum entanglement.

Charge Transport Through Open, Driven Two-Level Systems with Dissipation

We derive a Floquet-like formalism to calculate the stationary average current through an AC driven double quantum dot in presence of dissipation. The method allows us to take into account arbitrary coupling strengths both of a time-dependent field and a bosonic environment. We numerical evaluate a truncation scheme and compare with analytical, perturbative results such as the Tien-Gordon formula.

Shot Noise Spectrum of Open Dissipative Quantum Two-level Systems

We study the current noise spectrum of qubits under transport conditions in a dissipative bosonic environment. We combine (non-)Markovian master equations with correlation functions in Laplace-space to derive a noise formula for both weak and strong coupling to the bath. The coherence-induced reduction of noise is diminished by weak dissipation and/or a large level separation (bias). For weak dissipation, we demonstrate that the dephasing and relaxation rates of the two-level system can be extracted from noise. In the strong dissipation regime, the localisation-delocalisation transition becomes visible in the low-frequency noise.

Dynamics of a large spin with weak dissipation

We investigate the generalization of the spin-boson model to arbitrary spin size. The Born-Markov approximation is employed to derive a master equation in the regime of small coupling strengths to the environment. For spin one half, the master equation transforms into a set of Bloch equations, the solution of which is in good agreement with results of the spin-boson model for weak ohmic dissipation. For larger spins, we find a superradiance-like behavior known from the Dicke model. The influence of the nonresonant bosons of the dissipative environment can lead to the formation of a beat pattern in the dynamics of the $z$-component of the spin. The beat frequency is approximately proportional to the cutoff $ω_c$ of the spectral function.

Fluctuation induced effects in confined electrolyte solutions

We examine electrolyte systems confined between two parallel, grounded metal plates using a field-theoretic approach truncated at one-loop order. For symmetric electrolytes, the density distribution of the ions is non-uniform, with a maximum value at the center of the system. For asymmetric electrolytes, the system is no longer locally neutral, and there is a non-zero static electric potential. In addition, the surface of the metal plates becomes charged. When the plate separation becomes greater than the screening length, the charge distribution possesses two peaks with a local minimum at the center of the system. When the plates are immersed in a bulk electrolyte solution, an attractive fluctation induced force develops between them that is analogous to the Casimir force. Unlike the Casimir force, however, this attractive interaction has a finite limit in the zero separation limit and decays inversely with the separation at large separations.

Dicke Effect in the Tunnel Current through two Double Quantum Dots

We calculate the stationary current through two double quantum dots which are interacting via a common phonon environment. Numerical and analytical solutions of a master equation in the stationary limit show that the current can be increased as well as decreased due to a dissipation mediated interaction. This effect is closely related to collective, spontaneous emission of phonons (Dicke super- and subradiance effect), and the generation of a `cross-coherence' with entanglement of charges in singlet or triplet states between the dots. Furthermore, we discuss an inelastic `current switch' mechanism by which one double dot controls the current of the other.

Single electron-phonon interaction in a suspended quantum dot phonon cavity

An electron-phonon cavity consisting of a quantum dot embedded in a free-standing GaAs/AlGaAs membrane is characterized in Coulomb blockade measurements at low temperatures. We find a complete suppression of single electron tunneling around zero bias leading to the formation of an energy gap in the transport spectrum. The observed effect is induced by the excitation of a localized phonon mode confined in the cavity. This phonon blockade of transport is lifted at magnetic fields where higher electronic states with nonzero angular momentum are brought into resonance with the phonon energy.

Current detection of superradiance and induced entanglement of double quantum dot excitons

We propose to measure the superradiance effect by observing the current through a semiconductor double-dot ststem. An electron and a hole are injected separately into one of the quantum dots to form an exciton and then recombine radiatively. We find that the stationary current shows oscillatory behavior as one varies the inter-dot distance. The amplitude of oscillation can be increased by incorporating the system into a microcavity. Furthermore, the current is suppressed if the dot distance is small compared to the wavelength of the emitted photon. This photon trapping phenomenon generates the entangled state and may be used to control the emission of single photons at predetermined times.

Quantum Chaos Triggered by Precursors of a Quantum Phase Transition: The Dicke Model

We consider the Dicke Hamiltonian, a simple quantum-optical model which exhibits a zero-temperature quantum phase transition. We present numerical results demonstrating that at this transition the system changes from being quasi-integrable to quantum chaotic. By deriving an exact solution in the thermodynamic limit we relate this phenomenon to a localisation-delocalisation transition in which a macroscopic superposition is generated. We also describe the classical analogues of this behaviour.

Steering of a Bosonic Mode with a Double Quantum Dot

We investigate the transport and coherence properties of a double quantum dot coupled to a single damped boson mode. Our numerically results reveal how the properties of the boson distribution can be steered by altering parameters of the electronic system such as the energy difference between the dots. Quadrature amplitude variances and the Wigner function are employed to illustrate how the state of the boson mode can be controlled by a stationary electron current through the dots.

Transmission Through a Quantum Dynamical Delta Barrier

We discuss electron scattering in a one-dimensional delta barrier potential with either time-dependent coupling constant (classical model) or a coupling constant that is linear in a boson coordinate (quantum model). We find an exact continued fraction solution and Fano like resonances in the transmission coefficient. In the quantum model, energies for perfect transmission exist below the first sideband threshold.

Phonon Cavity Models for Quantum Dot Based Qubits

Phonon cavities are believed to be the next step towards a control of dephasing in semiconductor quantum dot `qubits'. In this paper, we discuss two models for phonon cavities - a surface acoustic wave (SAW) inter-digitated transducer on an infinite half-space, and an elastic thin slab. The inelastic current through double quantum dots in non-perfect SAW cavities exhibits a gap at small energies and is completely suppressed in a perfect, infinite system. In the free-standing slab model, van Hove singularities evolve in the phonon spectral density. We find that these singularities cause additional side peaks in the inelastic current.

Adiabatic Transfer of Electrons in Coupled Quantum Dots

We investigate the influence of dissipation on one- and two-qubit rotations in coupled semiconductor quantum dots, using a (pseudo) spin-boson model with adiabatically varying parameters. For weak dissipation, we solve a master equation, compare with direct perturbation theory, and derive an expression for the `fidelity loss' during a simple operation that adiabatically moves an electron between two coupled dots. We discuss the possibility of visualizing coherent quantum oscillations in electron `pump' currents, combining quantum adiabaticity and Coulomb blockade. In two-qubit spin-swap operations where the role of intermediate charge states has been discussed recently, we apply our formalism to calculate the fidelity loss due to charge tunneling between two dots.

Control of Dephasing and Phonon Emission in Coupled Quantum Dots

We predict that phonon subband quantization can be detected in the non-linear electron current through double quantum dot qubits embedded into nano-size semiconductor slabs, acting as phonon cavities. For particular values of the dot level splitting $Δ$, piezo-electric or deformation potential scattering is either drastically reduced as compared to the bulk case, or strongly enhanced due to phonon van Hove singularities. By tuning $Δ$ via gate voltages, one can either control dephasing, or strongly increase emission into phonon modes with characteristic angular distributions.

Dynamics of a large-spin-boson system in the strong coupling regime

We investigate collective effects of an ensemble of biased two level systems interacting with a bosonic bath in the strong coupling regime. The two level systems are described by a large pseudo-spin J. An equation for the expectation value M(t) of the z-component of the pseudo spin is derived and solved numerically for an ohmic bath at T=0. In case of a large cut-off frequency of the spectral function, a Markov approximation is justified and an analytical solution is presented. We find that M(t) relaxes towards a highly correlated state with maximum value $\pm J$ for large times. However, this relaxation is extremely slow for most parameter values so as if the system was "frozen in" by interaction with the bosonic bath.

Charge transport through quantum dots via time-varying tunnel couplings

We describe a novel mechanism for charge pumping through tunnel-coupled quantum dots in the regime of strong Coulomb blockade. The quantum state of an additional electron within the structure is steered by changing the tunneling couplings between neighbouring dots. Appropriate tailoring of the interdot tunneling rates allows to design the instantaneous eigenvalues of the system Hamiltonian. A combination of adiabatic following and Landau-Zener tunneling results in the transfer of charge from one dot to the neighbouring one. Coupling to electron reservoirs via weak tunnel-barriers then allows to implement an electron pump.
