Transport through single-level systems: Spin dynamics in the nonadiabatic regime

We investigate the Fano-Anderson model coupled to a large ensemble of spins under the influence of an external magnetic field. The interaction between the two spin systems is treated within a meanfield-approach and we assume an anisotropic coupling between these two systems. By using a nonadiabatic approach, we make no further approximations in the theoretical description of our system, apart from the semiclassical treatment. Therewith, we can include the short-time dynamics as well as the broadening of the energy levels arising due to the coupling to the external electronic reservoirs. We study the spin dynamics in the regime of low and high bias. For the infinite bias case, we compare our results to those obtained from a simpler rate equation approach, where higher-order transitions are neglected. We show, that these higher-order terms are important in the range of low magnetic field. Additionally, we analyze extensively the finite bias regime with methods from nonlinear dynamics, and we discuss the possibility of switching of the large spin.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Phase Transitions in the Ising Model

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Ising model driven under monochromatic nonadiabatic modulation of the transverse field. We show that besides the Ising-like critical behavior, the system exhibits an anisotropic transition which is absent in equilibrium. The nonequilibrium quantum phases correspond to states which are synchronized with the external control in the long-time dynamics.

Thermal phase transitions for Dicke-type models in the ultra-strong coupling limit

We consider the Dicke model in the ultra-strong coupling limit to investigate thermal phase transitions and their precursors at finite particle numbers $N$ for bosonic and fermionic systems. We derive partition functions with degeneracy factors that account for the number of configurations and derive explicit expressions for the Landau free energy. This allows us to discuss the difference between the original Dicke (fermionic) and the bosonic case. We find a crossover between these two cases that shows up, e.g., in the specific heat.

Nonequilibrium Quantum Phase Transitions in the Dicke Model

We establish a set of nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions in the Dicke model by considering a monochromatic nonadiabatic modulation of the atom-field coupling. For weak driving the system exhibits a set of sidebands which allow the circumvention of the no-go theorem which otherwise forbids the occurence of superradiant phase transitions. At strong driving we show that the system exhibits a rich multistable structure and exhibits both first- and second-order nonequilibrium quantum phase transitions.

Adiabaticity in semiclassical nanoelectromechanical systems

We compare the semiclassical description of NEMS within and beyond the adiabatic approximation. We consider a NEMS model which contains a single phonon (oscillator) mode linearly coupled to an electronic few-level system in contact with external particle reservoirs (leads). Using Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory, we derive a Langevin equation for the oscillator trajectory that is non-perturbative in the system-leads coupling. A stationary electronic current through the system generates nontrivial dynamical behavior of the oscillator, even in the adiabatic regime. The 'backaction' of the oscillator onto the current is studied as well. For the two simplest cases of one and two coupled electronic levels, we discuss the differences between the adiabatic and the non-adiabatic regime of the oscillator dynamics.

Charge Qubit Purification by an Electronic Feedback Loop

We propose the manipulation of an isolated qubit by a simple instantaneous closed-loop feedback scheme in which a time-dependent electronic detector current is directly back-coupled into qubit parameters. As specific detector model we employ a capacitively coupled single-electron transistor. We demonstrate the stabilization of pure delocalized qubit states above a critical detector-qubit coupling. This electronic purification is independent of the initial qubit state and is accomplished after few electron jumps through the detector. Our simple scheme can be used for the efficient and robust initialization of solid-state qubits in quantum computational algorithms at arbitrary temperatures.

Random backaction in tunneling of single electrons through nanostructures

We derive an $n$-resolved Master equation for quantum transport that includes a dependence on the number $n$ of tunneled electrons in system parameters such as tunnel rates and energy levels. We apply the formalism to describe dynamical changes due to random backaction effects, for example due to local fluctuations of the electrostatic landscape during the transport process. We quantify the amount of additional noise on top of electron shot noise due to these fluctuations by giving explicit expressions both for sequential and coherent tunneling examples.

Non-Markovian effects in the Quantum noise of interacting nanostructures

We present a theory of finite-frequency noise in non-equilibrium conductors. It is shown that Non-Markovian correlations are essential to describe the physics of quantum noise. In particular, we show the importance of a correct treatment of the initial system-bath correlations, and how these can be calculated using the formalism of quantum master equations. Our method is particularly important in interacting systems, and when the measured frequencies are larger that the temperature and applied voltage. In this regime, quantum-noise steps are expected in the power spectrum due to vacuum fluctuations. This is illustrated in the current noise spectrum of single resonant level model and of a double quantum dot --charge qubit-- attached to electronic reservoirs. Furthermore, the method allows for the calculation of the single-time counting statistics in quantum dots, measured in recent experiments.

Finite-frequency counting statistics of electron transport: Markovian Theory

We present a theory of frequency-dependent counting statistics of electron transport through nanostructures within the framework of Markovian quantum master equations. Our method allows the calculation of finite-frequency current cumulants of arbitrary order, as we explicitly show for the second- and third-order cumulants. Our formulae generalize previous zero-frequency expressions in the literature and can be viewed as an extension of MacDonald's formula beyond shot noise. When combined with an appropriate treatment of tunneling, using, e.g. Liouvillian perturbation theory in Laplace space, our method can deal with arbitrary bias voltages and frequencies, as we illustrate with the paradigmatic example of transport through a single resonant level model. We discuss various interesting limits, including the recovery of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem near linear response, as well as some drawbacks inherent of the Markovian description arising from the neglect of quantum fluctuations.

Semi-classical dynamics of nano-electromechanical systems

We investigate the dynamics of a single phonon (oscillator) mode linearly coupled to an electronic few-level system in contact with external particle reservoirs (leads). A stationary electronic current through the system generates non-trivial dynamical behaviour of the oscillator. Using Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory, we derive a Langevin equation for the oscillator trajectory that is non-perturbative in the system-leads coupling and from which we extract effective oscillator potentials and friction coefficients. For the two simplest cases of a single and two coupled electronic levels, we discuss various regimes of the oscillator dynamics.

Entanglement and parametric resonance in driven quantum systems

We study the relationship between entanglement and parametric resonance in a system of two coupled time-dependent oscillators. As a measure of bipartite entanglement, we calculate the linear entropy for the reduced density operator, from which we study the entanglement dynamics. In particular, we find that the bipartite entanglement increases in time up to a maximal mixing scenario, when the set of auxiliary dynamical parameters are under parametric resonance. Moreover, we obtain a closed relationship between the correlations in the ground state, the localisation of the Wigner function in phase space, and the localisation of the wave function of the total system.

Frequency-dependent counting statistics in interacting nanoscale conductors

We present a formalism to calculate finite-frequency current correlations in interacting nanoscale conductors. We work within the n-resolved density matrix approach and obtain a multi-time cumulant generating function that provides the fluctuation statistics, solely from the spectral decomposition of the Liouvillian. We apply the method to the frequency-dependent third cumulant of the current through a single resonant level and through a double quantum dot. Our results, which show that deviations from Poissonian behaviour strongly depend on frequency, demonstrate the importance of finite-frequency higher-order cumulants in fully characterizing interactions.

Noise enhancement due to quantum coherence in coupled quantum dots

We show that the intriguing observation of noise enhancement in the charge transport through two vertically coupled quantum dots can be explained by the interplay of quantum coherence and strong Coulomb blockade. We demonstrate that this novel mechanism for super-Poissonian charge transfer is very sensitive to decoherence caused by electron-phonon scattering as inferred from the measured temperature dependence.

Non-equilibrium Entanglement and Noise in Coupled Qubits

We study charge entanglement in two Coulomb-coupled double quantum dots in thermal equilibrium and under stationary non-equilibrium transport conditions. In the transport regime, the entanglement exhibits a clear switching threshold and various limits due to suppression of tunneling by Quantum Zeno localisation or by an interaction induced energy gap. We also calculate quantum noise spectra and discuss the inter-dot current correlation as an indicator of the entanglement in transport experiments.

Spin relaxation in a GaAs quantum dot embedded inside a suspended phonon cavity

The phonon-induced spin relaxation in a two-dimensional quantum dot embedded inside a semiconductor slab is investigated theoretically. An enhanced relaxation rate is found due to the phonon van Hove singularities. Oppositely, a vanishing deformation potential may also result in a suppression of the spin relaxation rate. For larger quantum dots, the interplay between the spin orbit interaction and Zeeman levels causes the suppression of the relaxation at several points. Furthermore, a crossover from confined to bulk-like systems is obtained by varying the width of the slab.

Current noise of a quantum dot p-i-n junction in a photonic crystal

The shot-noise spectrum of a quantum dot p-i-n junction embedded inside a three-dimensional photonic crystal is investigated. Radiative decay properties of quantum dot excitons can be obtained from the observation of the current noise. The characteristic of the photonic band gap is revealed in the current noise with discontinuous behavior. Applications of such a device in entanglement generation and emission of single photons are pointed out, and may be achieved with current technologies.

Proposal for teleportation of charge qubits via superradiance

A scheme is proposed to teleport charge qubits via superradiance. Reservoir-induced entanglement is generated between two semiconductor dots in a microcavity where a quantum state encoded in a third quantum dot is then tuned into collective decay with one of the entangled dots. Teleportation is achieved automatically in our scheme which we also extend to quantum wires.

Effects of cavity and superradiance on the electrical transport through quantum dots

A novel method is proposed to measure the Purcell effect by observing the current through a semiconductor quantum dot embedded inside a microcavity. The stationary current is shown to be altered if one varies the cavity length. For the double-dot system, the stationary current is found to show the interference feature (superradiance) as the inter-dot distance is varied. The amplitude of oscillation can be increased by incorporating the system into a microcavity. Furthermore, the current is suppressed if the dot distance is small compared to the wavelength of the emitted photon. This photon trapping phenomenon generates the entangled state and may be used to control the emission of single photons at predetermined times.
