Single Photoelectron Detection after Selective Excitation of Electron-Heavy Hole and Electron-Light Hole Pairs in Double Quantum Dots

We demonstrate the real-time detection of single photogenerated electrons in two different lateral double quantum dots made in AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells having a thin or a thick AlGaAs barrier layer. The observed incident laser power and photon energy dependences of the photoelectron detection efficiency both indicate that the trapped photoelectrons are, for the thin barrier sample, predominantly photogenerated in the buffer layer followed by tunneling into one of the two dots, whereas for the thick barrier sample they are directly photogenerated in the well. For the latter, single photoelectron detection after selective excitation of the heavy and light hole state in the dot is well resolved. This ensures the applicability of our quantum well-based quantum dot systems for the coherent transfer from single photon polarization to single electron spin states.

T-matrix of $Z^0$ Decay into Two Photons

We first confirm that Nishijima's method of the $π^0 \rightarrow γ+γ$ calculation can precisely reproduce the observed life time of $π^0$ decay. Then, we calculate, for the first time, the T-matrix of the $Z^0 \rightarrow γ+γ$ process in which the vertex of the $γ^μγ_5$ is responsible for the decay of the weak vector boson. Even though the decay rate itself vanishes to zero due to the symmetry nature of two photons (Landau-Yang theorem), the T-matrix of the process has neither linear nor logarithmic divergences. Therefore, there is no room for the regularization of the triangle diagrams with the $γ^μγ^5$ vertex. Further, the T-matrices of all the triangle diagrams do not have any divergences at all, and therefore it is rigorously proved that the anomaly equation is spurious and appears only because of the improper regularization of unphysical amplitudes.

Topological Insulator Cell for Memory and Magnetic Sensor Applications

We propose a memory device based on magnetically doped surfaces of 3D topological insulators. Magnetic information stored on the surface is read out via the quantized Hall effect, which is characterized by a topological invariant. Consequently, the read out process is insensitive to disorder, variations in device geometry, and imperfections in the writing process.

An energy scale directly related to superconductivity in the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductors: Universality from the Fermi arc picture

We have performed a temperature dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the tri-layer high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor (HTSC) Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223), and have shown that the \textquotedblleft effective\textquotedblright superconducting (SC) gap $Δ_{\rm{sc}}$ defined at the end point of the Fermi arc and the $T_c$ (= 110 K) approximately satisfies the weak-coupling BCS-relationship 2$Δ_{\rm{sc}}$ = 4.3$k_{\rm{B}}T_c$. Combining this result with previous ARPES results on single- and double-layer cuprates, we show that the relationship between 2$Δ_{\rm{sc}}$ = 4.3$k_{\rm{B}}T_c$ holds for various HTSCs. Furthermore, at $T$ $\sim$ $T_c$, the quasi-patricle width at the end point of the Fermi arc is found to coincide with $Δ_{\rm{sc}}$, consistent with the context of Planckian dissipation.

Energy-Dependent Enhancement of the Electron-Coupling Spectrum of the Underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d Superconductor

We have determined the electron-coupling spectrum of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra by two deconvolution-free robust methods. As hole concentration decreases, the coupling spectral weight at low energies ~<15 meV shows a twofold and nearly band-independent enhancement, while that around ~65 meV increases moderately, and that in ~>130 meV decreases leading to a crossover of dominant coupling excitation between them. Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of sufficiently strong low-energy coupling, λLE ~ 1, in underdoped system.

Conductance modulation in graphene nanoribbon under transver-se asymmetric electric potential

We theoretically study the effect of transverse electric potentials on the transport properties of armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs), formed by pairs of asymme-tric gates placed along the side of the ribbon. Single pair and dual pair configurations are considered. We also examine the effect of hollows (spatial regions void of carbon atoms) in the AGNR channels. We find that the use of hollowed AGNRs in the dual pair configuration allows for a significant modulation of the transport gap, when the two pairs have opposite polarity of gate bias. Furthermore, we show that for the dual-gate system, hollowed AGNR channels exhibit the optimal ratio of ON-state to OFF-state conductance, due to the smaller OFF-state conductance compared with spatially homogenous AGNR channels. Our results indicate that transverse gate technology coupled with careful engineering of hollow geometry may lead to possible applications in graphene-based electronic devices.

New high magnetic field phase of the frustrated $S=1/2$ chain compound LiCuVO$_4$

Magnetization of the frustrated $S=1/2$ chain compound LiCuVO$_4$, focusing on high magnetic field phases, is reported. Besides a spin-flop transition and the transition from a planar spiral to a spin modulated structure observed recently, an additional transition was observed just below the saturation field. This newly observed magnetic phase is considered as a spin nematic phase, which was predicted theoretically but was not observed experimentally. The critical fields of this phase and its dM/dH curve are in good agreement with calculations performed in a microscopic model (M. E. Zhitomirsky and H. Tsunetsugu, preprint, arXiv:1003.4096v2).

Local spin polarization of Landau levels under Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the local spin polarization texture of Landau levels under Rashba spin-orbit coupling in bulk two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems. In order to analyze the spin polarization as a function of two-dimensional coordinates within the 2DEG, we first solve the system eigenstates in the symmetric gauge. Our exact analytical wavefunction solutions are shown to be gauge invariant with solutions obtained in the commonly used Landau gauge. We illustrate the two-dimensional spatial spin profile for a single Landau level and suggest means to measure and utilize the local polarization in practice.

Valley filter in strain engineered graphene

We propose a simple, yet highly efficient and robust device for producing valley polarized current in graphene. The device comprises of two distinct components; a region of uniform uniaxial strain, adjacent to an out-of-plane magnetic barrier configuration formed by patterned ferromagnetic gates. We show that when the amount of strain, magnetic field strength, and Fermi level are properly tuned, the output current can be made to consist of only a single valley contribution. Perfect valley filtering is achievable within experimentally accessible parameters.

Enhanced superconducting gaps in the tri-layer high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$

We have investigated the optimally doped tri-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces originated from the outer and inner CuO$_2$ planes (OP and IP) separately. The OP band is overdoped (hole density $\sim$ 0.26/Cu) with a large d-wave gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 43 meV while the IP is underdoped ($\sim$ 0.06/Cu) with an even large gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 60 meV. We propose that the enhancement of the $Δ_0$ of IP is due to the minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and that the OP gap is then enhanced through interlayer coupling, most likely a proximity effect from the IP.

Unified Description of the Intrinsic Spin-Hall Effects

The intrinsic spin-Hall effects (SHE) in $p$-doped semiconductors [S. Murakami et al., Science 301, 1348 (2003)] and two-dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling [J. Sinova et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 126603 (2004)] have been the subject of many theoretical studies, but their driving mechanisms have yet to be described in a unified manner. The former effect arises from the adiabatic topological curvature of momentum space, from which holes acquire a spin-dependent anomalous velocity. The SHE in the Rashba system, on the other hand, results from the momentum-dependent spin dynamics in the presence of an external electric field. The two effects clearly appear to originate from distinct mechanisms. Our motivation for this article is to address this apparent disparity and, in particular, to seek a unifying description of the effects. In this endeavor, we consider the explicit time-dependence of SHE systems starting with a general spin-orbit model. We find that by performing a gauge transformation of the general model with respect to time, a well-defined gauge field appears in time space which has the physical significance of an effective magnetic field. This magnetic field is shown to precisely account for the SHE in the Rashba system in the adiabatic limit. Remarkably, by carefully analyzing the equation of motion of the general model, this field component is also found to be the origin of the anomalous velocity due to the momentum space curvature. Our study therefore unifies the two seemingly disparate intrinsic SHEs under a common adiabatic framework.

Unified Semi-Classical Description of Intrinsic Spin-Hall Effect in Spintronic, Optical, and Graphene Systems

A semi-classical description of the intrinsic spin-Hall effect (SHE) is presented which is relevant for a wide class of systems. A heuristic model for the SHE is developed, starting with a fully quantum mechanical treatment, from which we construct an intuitive expression for the spin-Hall current and conductivity. Our method makes transparent the physical mechanism which drives the effect, and unifies the SHE across several spintronic and optical systems. Finally, we propose an analogous effect in bilayer graphene.

New Renormalization Scheme of Vacuum Polarization in QED

We examine the vacuum polarization contribution in the renormalization scheme of QED. Normally, the quadratic divergence term is discarded under the condition that the counter term of the Lagrangian density should be gauge invariant. Here, it is shown that the whole contribution of the photon self-energy should not be considered for the renormalization procedure. In fact, the finite contribution of the renormalization in the vacuum polarization is shown to give rise to the hyperfine splitting energy which disagrees with the experimental observation in hydrogen atom. For the treatment of the vacuum polarization, we present a new renormalization scheme of the photon self-energy diagram.

Doping and Temperature Dependence of Raman Scattering of NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) Superconductor

Raman spectra of polycrystalline NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) compound have been systematically investigated as functions of temperature and fluorine concentration. Scanning electron microscopic and Raman microscopic characterization demonstrates that the polycrystalline samples mainly contain two phases, i.e. superconductor NdFeAsO1-xFx compound and a MnP-type FeAs phase, with dissimilar characteristic Raman bands. It was found that fluorine doping leads to structure disorder in the insulator Nd-O layers and high temperature coefficient of Fe-As vibrational mode.

Unphysical Gauge Fixing in Higgs Mechanism

The unitary gauge in the Higgs mechanism is to impose the condition of $ϕ=ϕ^\dagger $ on the Higgs fields. However, this is not the gauge fixing but simply a procedure for producing the massive vector boson fields by hand. The Lagrangian density of the weak interactions should be reconsidered by starting from the massive vector boson fields which couple to the fermion currents as the initial ingredients.

Topological spin-Hall current in waveguided zinc-blende semiconductors with Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling

We describe an intrinsic spin-Hall effect in $n$-type bulk zinc-blende semiconductors with topological origin. When electron transport is confined to a waveguide structure, and the applied electric field is such that the spins of electrons remain as eigenstates of the Dresselhaus spin-orbit field with negligible subband mixing, a gauge structure appears in the momentum space of the system. In particular, the momentum space exhibits a non-trivial Berry curvature which affects the transverse motion of electrons anisotropically in spin, thereby producing a finite spin-Hall effect. The effect should be detectable using standard techniques in the literature such as Kerr rotation, and be readily distinguishable from other mechanisms of the spin-Hall effect.

Non-Abelian gauge field effects and its relevance to spinning particle dynamics in the technology of spintronics

We describe formally the precession of spin vector about the k-space effective magnetic field in condensed matter system with spin orbital effects as constituting a local transformation of the electron wavefunction which necessarily invokes the SU(2) transformation rule to ensure covariance. We showed a "no-precession" condition as pre-requisite for the spin gauge field to exert its influence on spin particle motion. The effects of the spin gauge field on spin particle motion were shown to be consistent in both classical and quantum pictures, which hence should underpin theoretical explanations for important effects in anomalous Hall, spin Hall, spin torque, optical Magnus, geometric quantum computation.

Mistery of Real Scalar Klein-Gordon Field

The mystery that the real scalar Klein-Gordon field has vanishing current densities is resolved. The scalar field is shown to be a complex field due to the condition of possessing a proper non-relativistic limit. Like the Schrödinger field, one component complex Klein-Gordon field corresponds to a boson with one flavor, and therefore there exists no physical real scalar field. As a good example, we present the Schwinger model Hamiltonian which is naturally described by the complex scalar field with one flavor. The non-existence of the real scalar field indicates that the Higgs mechanism should be reconsidered.
