Dynamical Properties of Charged Stripes in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Inelastic light-scattering spectra of underdoped ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$ (LSCO) single crystals are presented which provide direct evidence of the formation of quasi one-dimensional charged structures in the two-dimensional $\rm CuO_2$ planes. The ``stripes'' manifest themselves in a Drude-like peak at low energies and temperatures. The selection rules allow us to determine the orientation to be along the diagonals at $x=0.02$ and along the principal axes at $x=0.10$. The electron-lattice interaction determines the correlation length which turns out to be larger in compound classes with lower superconducting transition temperatures. Temperature is the only scale of the response at different doping levels demonstrating the importance of quantum critical behavior.

New Concept of First Quantization

We derive a Lagrangian density of Dirac field by employing the local gauge invariance and the Maxwell equation as the fundamental principle. The only assumption made here is that the fermion field should have four components. The present derivation of the Dirac equation does not involve the first quantization, and therefore this study may present an alternative way of understanding the quantization procedure.

Gauge non-invariance of quark-quark interactions

We discuss the gauge invariance of quark-quark potential in QCD in the perturbative treatment, and show that the gauge dependence of the quark-gluon interaction cannot be eliminated. Therefore, the quark-quark potential cannot properly be written in terms of physical variables in the perturbation theory. This is in contrast to the QED case in which the gauge invariance of the electron-photon interaction is guaranteed by the current conservation. As an example, we show that the different choices of the gauge fixing give different Coulomb interactions when the fermion current is not conserved. Also, we examine a possible existence of $QG-$state (one quark$-$one gluon) corresponding to the conserved color current, which should have a fractional electric charge.

Re-Interpretation of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Quantum Field Theory and Goldstone Theorem

We present a new picture of global symmetry breaking in quantum field theory and propose a novel realization of symmetry breaking phenomena in terms of the conserved charge associated with its symmetry. In particular, the fermion condensate of the vacuum state is examined when the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking takes place. It is shown that the fermion condensate of the vacuum vanishes if the system is solved exactly, and therefore we cannot make use of the Goldstone theorem. As a perfect example, we present the Bethe ansatz vacuum of the Thirring model which shows the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking with no fermion condensate.

Historical Mistake in Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking

The prediction of a massless boson after the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the classic paper of Nambu and Jona-Lasinio (NJL) is shown to be wrong. Their mistake is due to a carelessly employed perturbative vacuum when evaluating the boson mass by summing up one loop Feynman diagrams. With the proper symmetry broken vacuum, one obtains a finite boson mass depending on the coupling constant $G$.

New Vacuum of Bethe Ansatz Solutions in Thirring Model

We find a new vacuum of the Bethe ansatz solutions in the massless Thirring model. This vacuum breaks the chiral symmetry and has the lower energy than the well-known symmetric vacuum energy. Further, we evaluate the energy spectrum of the one particle-one hole ($1p-1h$) states, and find that it has a finite gap. The analytical expressions for the true vacuum as well as for the lowest $1p-1h$ excited state are also found. Further, we examine the bosonization of the massless Thirring model and prove that the well-known procedure of bosonization of the massless Thirring model is incomplete because of the lack of the zero mode in the boson field.

Non-equivalence between Heisenberg XXZ spin chain and Thirring model

The Bethe ansatz equations for the spin 1/2 Heisenberg XXZ spin chain are numerically solved, and the energy eigenvalues are determined for the anti-ferromagnetic case. We examine the relation between the XXZ spin chain and the Thirring model, and show that the spectrum of the XXZ spin chain is different from that of the regularized Thirring model.

Pressure induced Superconductor-Insulator transition in the spinel compound CuRh2S4

We performed resistivity measurements in CuRh$_{2}$S$_{4}$ under quasi-hydrostatic pressure of up to 8.0 GPa, and found a pressure induced superconductor-insulator (SI) transition. Initially, with increasing pressure, the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ increases from 4.7 K at ambient pressure to 6.4 K at 4.0 GPa, but decreases at higher pressures. With further compression, superconductivity in CuRh$_{2}$S$_{4}$ disappears abruptly at a critical pressure $P_{\rm SI}$ between 5.0 and 5.6 GPa, when it becomes an insulator.

Raman Scattering versus Infrared Conductivity: Evidence for one-dimensional Conduction in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}

Raman and Infrared (IR) spectra of an underdoped La_{1.90}Sr_{0.10}CuO_{4} single crystal have been measured as a function of temperature. Both techniques provide unconventional low-energy spectra. The IR conductivity exhibits features peaked at finite frequencies which do not have a counterpart in the Raman response. Below approximately 100 K a transfer of both Raman and IR spectral weight towards lower energies is found and a new component in the Raman response builds up being characterized by a very long lifetime of electrons propagating along the Cu-O bonds.

Low temperature vortex liquid states induced by quantum fluctuations in the quasi two dimensional organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_{2} Cu(NCS)_{2}

We report the transport properties in the vortex liquid states induced by quantum fluctuations at low temperature in the layered organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_{2} Cu(NCS)_{2}. A steep drop of the resistivity observed below about 1 K separates the liquid state into two regions. In the low resistance state at lower temperature, a finite resistivity with weak temperature dependence persists down to 100 mK at least. The finite resistivity in the vortex state at T ~= 0 K indicates the realization of quantum vortex liquid assisted by the strong quantum fluctuations instead of the thermal one. A possible origin for separating these liquid states is a remnant vortex melting line at the original position, which is obscured and suppressed by the quantum fluctuations. A non-linear behavior of the in-plane resistivity appears at large current density in only the low resistance state, but not in another vortex liquid state at higher temperature, where the thermal fluctuations are dominant. The transport properties in the low resistance state are well understood in the vortex slush concept with a short-range order of vortices. Thus the low resistance state below 1 K is considered to be a novel quantum vortex slush state.

Large N behavior of string solutions in the Heisenberg model

We investigate the large $N$ behavior of the complex solutions for the two magnon system in the S=1/2 Heisenberg XXZ model. The Bethe ansatz equations are numerically solved for the string solutions with new iteration method. A clear evidence of the violation of the string configurations is found at $N=22,62,121,200,299,417$, but the broken states are still Bethe states. The number of the Bethe states is consistent with the exact diagonalization, except one singular state.

Infrared signatures of charge stripes in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4)

The in-plane optical conductivity of seven La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) single crystals with x between 0 and 0.15 has been studied from 30 to 295 K. All doped samples exhibit strong peaks in the far-infrared, which closely resemble those observed in Cu-O "ladders" with one-dimensional charge-ordering. The behavior with doping and temperature of the peak energy, width, and intensity allows us to conclude that we are observing charge stripes dynamics in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) on the fast time scale of infrared spectroscopy.

EDM operator free from Schiff's theorem

We present generalized Schiff's transformation on electric dipole moments (EDM) in quantum field theory. By the unitary transformation, the time and parity violating interaction $i{ge\over 2} \bar ψσ_{μν} γ_5 ψF^{μν}$ is transformed into a new form, but its nonrelativistic reduction has a unique form, which is free from Schiff's theorem. The relativistic corrections to the new EDM operator turn out to be a small increase to the EDM as given by $b_2 (αZ)^2$ with $b_2 \simeq 2 $. Therefore, the calculation of the EDM with nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock wave functions presents the most conservative but reliable estimation for the enhancement factor of the EDM in atoms.

A Realistic Description of Nucleon-Nucleon and Hyperon-Nucleon Interactions in the SU_6 Quark Model

We upgrade a SU_6 quark-model description for the nucleon-nucleon and hyperon-nucleon interactions by improving the effective meson-exchange potentials acting between quarks. For the scalar- and vector-meson exchanges, the momentum-dependent higher-order term is incorporated to reduce the attractive effect of the central interaction at higher energies. The single-particle potentials of the nucleon and Lambda, predicted by the G-matrix calculation, now have proper repulsive behavior in the momentum region q_1=5 - 20 fm^-1. A moderate contribution of the spin-orbit interaction from the scalar-meson exchange is also included. As to the vector mesons, a dominant contribution is the quadratic spin-orbit force generated from the rho-meson exchange. The nucleon-nucleon phase shifts at the non-relativistic energies up to T_lab=350 MeV are greatly improved especially for the 3E states. The low-energy observables of the nucleon-nucleon and the hyperon-nucleon interactions are also reexamined. The isospin symmetry breaking and the Coulomb effect are properly incorporated in the particle basis. The essential feature of the Lambda N - Sigma N coupling is qualitatively similar to that obtained from the previous models. The nuclear saturation properties and the single-particle potentials of the nucleon, Lambda and Sigma are reexamined through the G-matrix calculation. The single-particle potential of the Sigma hyperon is weakly repulsive in symmetric nuclear matter. The single-particle spin-orbit strength for the Lambda particle is very small, in comparison with that of the nucleons, due to the strong antisymmetric spin-orbit force generated from the Fermi-Breit interaction.

Strong Coupling Limit of Bethe Ansatz Solutions in Massive Thirring Model

We study the strong coupling limit of the Bethe ansatz solutions in the massive Thirring model. We find analytical expressions for the energy eigenvalues for the vacuum state as well as n-particle n- hole states. This formula is compared with the numerical results and is found to achieve a very good agreement. Also, it is found that the 2-particle 2- hole and higher particle-hole states describe n- free bosons states in this limit. The behaviors of the strong coupling limit of the boson mass for various model calculations are examined. We discuss an ambiguity of the coupling constant normalization due to the current regularization.

Hyperon Single-Particle Potentials Calculated from SU6 Quark-Model Baryon-Baryon Interactions

Using the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction recently developed by the Kyoto-Niigata group, we calculate NN, Lambda N and Sigma N G-matrices in ordinary nuclear matter. This is the first attempt to discuss the Lambda and Sigma single-particle potentials in nuclear medium, based on the realistic quark-model potential. The Lambda potential has the depth of more than 40 MeV, which is more attractive than the value expected from the experimental data of Lambda-hypernuclei. The Sigma potential turns out to be repulsive, the origin of which is traced back to the strong Pauli repulsion in the Sigma N (I=3/2) ^3S_1 state.

Single-Particle Spin-Orbit Strengths of the Nucleon and Hyperons by SU6 Quark-Model

The quark-model hyperon-nucleon interaction suggests an important antisymmetric spin-orbit component. It is generated from a color analogue of the Fermi-Breit interaction dominating in the one-gluon exchange process between quarks. We discuss the strength S_B of the single-particle spin-orbit potential, following the Scheerbaum's prescription. Using the SU6 quark-model baryon-baryon interaction which was recently developed by the Kyoto-Niigata group, we calculate NN, Lambda N and Sigma N G-matrices in symmetric nuclear matter and apply them to estimate the strength S_B. The ratio of S_B to the nucleon strength S_N =~ -40 MeV*fm^5 is (S_Lambda)/(S_N) =~ 1/5 and (S_Sigma)/(S_N) =~ 1/2 in the Born approximation. The G-matrix calculation of the model FSS modifies S_Lambda to (S_Lambda)/(S_N) =~ 1/12. For S_N and S_Sigma, the effect of the short-range correlation is comparatively weak against meson-exchange potentials with a short-range repulsive core. The significant reduction of the Lambda single-particle potential arises from the combined effect of the antisymmetric LS force, the flavor-symmetry breaking originating from the strange to up-down quark-mass difference, as well as the effect of the short-range correlation. The density dependence of S_B is also examined.

Kodaira energies of polarized log varieties

Let L be an ample line bundle on a log variety (V, D) having only log terminal singularities.The Kodaira energy of such a triple (V, D, L) is defined as follows: κε=-Inf{t\in Q | K(V,D)+tL is big}. Here K(V,D)=K_V+D is the log canonical bundle of (V,D) and "big" means κ=dim V. We first show that the rationality of κε, when it is negative, follows from log Flip theorems (thus it is proved for dim V\le 3 at present). Second we consider the case in which D=0, dim V=3 and V has only terminal singularities. Let S be the set of all the possible values of Kodaira energies of such polarized log threefolds. We prove that S has no negative limit point. This result is closely related to the boundedness of Fano 3-folds.
