Global structure of thermal tides in the upper cloud layer of Venus revealed by LIR onboard Akatsuki

Longwave Infrared Camera (LIR) onboard Akatsuki first revealed the global structure of the thermal tides in the upper cloud layer of Venus. The data were acquired over three Venusian years, and the analysis was done over the areas from the equator to the mid-latitudes in both hemispheres and over the whole local time. Thermal tides at two vertical levels were analyzed by comparing data at two different emission angles. Dynamical wave modes consisting of tides were identified; the diurnal tide consisted mainly of Rossby-wave and gravity-wave modes, while the semidiurnal tide predominantly consisted of a gravity-wave mode. The revealed vertical structures were roughly consistent with the above wave modes, but some discrepancy remained if the waves were supposed to be monochromatic. In turn, the heating profile that excites the tidal waves can be constrained to match this discrepancy, which would greatly advance the understanding of the Venusian atmosphere.

Observation of Correlated Particle-Hole Pairs and String Order in Low-Dimensional Mott Insulators

Quantum phases of matter are characterized by the underlying correlations of the many-body system. Although this is typically captured by a local order parameter, it has been shown that a broad class of many-body systems possesses a hidden non-local order. In the case of bosonic Mott insulators, the ground state properties are governed by quantum fluctuations in the form of correlated particle-hole pairs that lead to the emergence of a non-local string order in one dimension. Using high-resolution imaging of low-dimensional quantum gases in an optical lattice, we directly detect these pairs with single-site and single-particle sensitivity and observe string order in the one-dimensional case.

Evidence for unconventional superconducting fluctuations in heavy-fermion compound CeNi2Ge2

We present evidence for unconventional superconducting fluctuations in a heavy-fermion compound CeNi$_2$Ge$_2$. The temperature dependence of the $^{73}$Ge nuclear-spin-lattice-relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates the development of magnetic correlations and the formation of a Fermi-liquid state at temperatures lower than $T_{\rm FL}=0.4$ K, where $1/T_1T$ is constant. The resistance and $1/T_1T$ measured on an as-grown sample decrease below $T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} = 0.2$ K and $T_{\rm c}^{\rm NQR} = 0.1$ K, respectively; these are indicative of the onset of superconductivity. However, after annealing the sample to improve its quality, these superconducting signatures disappear. These results are consistent with the emergence of unconventional superconducting fluctuations in close proximity to a quantum critical point from the superconducting to the normal phase in CeNi$_2$Ge$_2$.

Spin Fluctuations and Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior of CeNi_2Ge_2

Neutron scattering shows that non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the heavy-fermion compound CeNi_2Ge_2 is brought about by the development of low-energy spin fluctuations with an energy scale of 0.6 meV. They appear around the antiferromagnetic wave vectors $({1/2} {1/2} 0)$ and $(0 0 {3/4})$ at low temperatures, and coexist with high-energy spin fluctuations with an energy scale of 4 meV and a modulation vector $(0.23, 0.23, {1/2})$. This unusual energy dependent structure of $\text{Im} χ(\bm{Q}, E)$ in $\bm{Q}$ space suggests that quasiparticle bands are important.

Low-energy spin fluctuations of the heavy-Fermion compound CeNi_2Ge_2: origin of non-Fermi liquid behavior

Neutron scattering shows that non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the heavy-Fermion compound CeNi_2Ge_2 is brought about by development of low-energy spin fluctuations with an energy scale of 0.6 meV. They appear around antiferromagnetic wave vectors $({1/2} {1/2} 0)$ and $(0 0 {3/4})$ at low temperatures, and coexist with high-energy spin fluctuations with an energy scale of 4 meV and a modulation vector $(0.23, 0.23, {1/2})$. The energy dependence of the spin fluctuations is a peculiar character of CeNi_2Ge_2 which differs from typical heavy-Fermion compounds, and suggests importance of low-energy structures of quasiparticle bands.

non-Local Quantum Criticality in Ce(Ru_{1-x} Fe_x)_2 Ge_2 (x = x_c = 0.76)

We present the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements, performed near the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Ce(Ru_{0.24} Fe_{0.76})_2 Ge_2. Both local and long range fluctuations of the local moments are observed, but due to the Kondo effect only the latter are critical. We propose a phenomenological expression which fits the energy $E$, temperature T and wave vector q dependences of the generalized susceptibility chi(q,E,T), describing the non-Fermi liquid E/T scaling found at every wave vector.
