A Possible Connection Between Massive Fermions and Dark Energy

In a dense cloud of massive fermions interacting by exchange of a light scalar field, the effective mass of the fermion can become negligibly small. As the cloud expands, the effective mass and the total energy density eventually increase with decreasing density. In this regime, the pressure-density relation can approximate that required for dark energy. We apply this phenomenon to the expansion of the Universe with a very light scalar field and infer relations between the parameters available and cosmological observations. Majorana neutrinos at a mass that may have been recently determined, and fermions such as the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP) may both be consistent with current observations of dark energy.

Pion LINAC as an Energy-Tagged Neutrino Source

The energy spectrum and flux of neutrinos from a linear pion accelerator are calculated analytically under the assumption of a uniform accelerating gradient. The energy of a neutrino from this source reacting in a detector can be determined from timing and event position information.

Sterile Neutrinos in a 6x6 Matrix Approach

Quark-lepton symmetry invites consideration of the existence of sterile neutrinos. Long ago, we showed that this approach predicts large neutrino mixing amplitudes. Using a Weyl spinor approach, we show, in an analytic example, how this, and pseudo-Dirac pairing, can develop within a reduced rank version of the conventional see-saw mechanism, from small intrinsic mixing strengths. We show by numerical examples that mixing of active and sterile neutrinos can affect the structure of oscillations relevant to extraction of neutrino mixing parameters from neutrino oscillation data.

Systematic study of pentaquark states: $qqq-q\bar{q}$ configuration

Group theoretic method for the systematic study of five-quark states with meson-baryon ($q\bar{q}-q^3$) configuration is developed. The calculation of matrix elements of many body Hamiltonian is simplified by transforming the physical bases (meson-baryon quark cluster bases) to symmetry bases (group chain classified bases), where the fractional parentage expansion method can be used. Three quark models, the naive Glashow-Isgur model, Salamanca chiral quark model and quark delocalization color screening model, are used to show the general applicability of the method and general results of constituent quark models for five-quark states are given. The method can also be useful in the calculation of meson-baryon scattering and the study of the five-quark components effect in baryon structure. The physical contents of different model configurations for the same multi-quark system can also be compared through the transformation between different physical bases to the same set of symmetry bases.

The Effect of Pion Exchange in a Relativistic Quark Model of Baryons

We examine the effect of adding pion exchange between quarks and pion self-energy corrections to the Los Alamos Relativistic Quark model with a short distance cutoff of the Bethe form. The contributions to the nucleon and the Delta-baryon are small. We conclude that the model is stable under this change in the sense that significant changes to the model parameters are not required.

Quantum chromodynamics quark benzene

A six-quark state with the benzene-like structure is proposed and studied based on color string model. The calculation with the quadratic confinement show that such structure has the lowest energy among the various hidden color six-quark structures proposed so far. Its possible effect on $NN$ scattering is discussed.

Systematic study of multi-quark states I. qq-qq-\bar{q} configuration

Group theoretic method for the systematic study of multi-quark states is developed. The calculation of matrix elements of many body Hamiltonian is simplified by transforming the physical bases (quark cluster bases) to symmetry bases (group chain classified bases), where the fractional parentage expansion method can be used. Five quark system is taken as example in this study. The Jaffe-Wilczek $qq-qq-\bar{q}$ configuration is chosen as one of examples to construct the physical bases and the transformation coefficients between physical bases and symmetry ones are shown to be related to the ${SU}_{mn}\supset{SU}_m\times{SU}_n$ isoscalar factors and a complete transformation coefficients table is given. The needed isoscalar factors and fractional parentage coefficients had been calculated with our new group representation theory and published before. Three quark models, the naive Glashow-Isgur, Salamanca and quark delocalization color screening, are used to show the general applicability of the new multi-quark calculation method and general results of constituent quark models for five-quark states are given.

Spin and orbital angular momentum in gauge theories (I): QED and determination of the angular momentum density

This two-paper series addresses and fixes the long-standing gauge invariance problem of angular momentum in gauge theories. This QED part reveals: 1) The spin and orbital angular momenta of electrons and photons can all be consistently defined gauge invariantly. 2) These gauge-invariant quantities can be conveniently computed via the canonical, gauge-dependent operators (e.g, $ψ^\dagger \vec x \times\frac 1i \vec \nabla ψ$) in the Coulomb gauge, which is in fact what people (unconsciously) do in atomic physics. 3) The renowned formula $\vec x\times(\vec E\times\vec B)$ is a wrong density for the electromagnetic angular momentum. The angular distribution of angular-momentum flow in polarized atomic radiation is properly described not by this formula, but by the gauge invariant quantities defined here. The QCD paper [arXiv:0907.1284] will give a non-trivial generalization to non-Abelian gauge theories, and discuss the connection to nucleon spin structure.

Spin and orbital angular momentum in gauge theories (II): QCD and nucleon spin structure

Parallel to the construction of gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum for QED in paper (I) of this series, we present here an analogous but non-trivial solution for QCD. Explicitly gauge invariant spin and orbital angular momentum operators of quarks and gluons are obtained. This was previously thought to be an impossible task, and opens a more promising avenue towards the understanding of the nucleon spin structure.

Multichannel oscillations and relations between LSND, KARMEN and MiniBooNE, with and without CP violation

We show by examples that multichannel mixing can affect both the parameters extracted from neutrino oscillation experiments, and that more general conclusions derived by fitting the experimental data under the assumption that only two channels are involved in the mixing. Implications for MiniBooNE are noted and an example based on maximal CP violation displays profound implications for the two data sets (muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino) of that experiment.

Origin of spontaneous violation of the Lorentz symmetry: Vortices in the cosmos

By carefully studying the (1,0)+(0,1) representation space for massive particles we point to the existence of certain inherent tachyonic dispersion relations: E^2= p^2-m^2. We put forward an interpretation that exploits these ``negative mass squared'' solutions; rotational invariance is spontaneously broken. Relevance of these results to the vortices in the cosmos is pointed out. NOTE: Just as "negative energy solutions'' of Dirac equation are re-interpreted as antiparticles, similarly the possibility exists for re-interpreting the tachyonic dispersion relations of all (j,0)+(0,j) representation spaces via spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking. In Mod. Phys. Lett. A8:2623-2630,1993 we exhibited this explicitly for the j=1 representation space. The interest in this old subject has grown markedly in recent years as is evident from numerous theoretical and phenomenological works on the subject. With this observation, we make this replacement of our paper fourteen years after its initial publication. The Abstract and main text remain unaltered. The title is changed to reflect the underlying physics more closely.

Nuclear effects on open charm production in p+A reactions

We calculate and resum the nuclear enhanced power corrections from the final state partonic scattering in nuclear matter to open charm production and correlations. In p+A reactions, we find that single and double inclusive D mesons can be suppressed as much as the neutral pions from the dynamical high twist shadowing. Effects of initial state energy loss in p+A collisions are also investigated and may lead to significantly weaker transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear suppression.

Open charm tomography of cold nuclear matter

We study the relative contribution of partonic sub-processes to D meson production and D meson-triggered inclusive di-hadrons to lowest order in perturbative QCD. While gluon fusion dominates the creation of large angle DD-bar pairs, charm on light parton scattering determines the yield of single inclusive D mesons. The distinctly different non-perturbative fragmentation of c quarks into D mesons versus the fragmentation of quarks and gluons into light hadrons results in a strong transverse momentum dependence of anticharm content of the away-side charm-triggered jet. In p+A reactions, we calculate and resum the coherent nuclear-enhanced power corrections from the final state partonic scattering in the medium. We find that single and double inclusive open charm production can be suppressed as much as the yield of neutral pions from dynamical high-twist shadowing. Effects of energy loss in p+A collisions are also investigated phenomenologically and may lead to significantly weaker transverse momentum dependence of the nuclear attenuation.

Understanding penta quark with various quark models

The pentaquark state recently discovered has been studied with three quark models which either fit the nucleon spin structure or the $NN$ scattering. A minimum $Θ^+$ mass of 1620 MeV is obtained both for the ${1/2}^\pm$ state. The mixing of various color structure configurations, which would reduce the mass of the penta-quark state, should be taking into account in the calculation of penta-quark mass.

Influence of tensor interactions on masses and decay widths of dibaryons

The influence of gluon and Goldstone boson induced tensor interactions on the dibaryon masses and D-wave decay widths has been studied in the quark delocalization, color screening model. The effective S-D wave transition interactions induced by gluon and Goldstone boson exchanges decrease rapidly with increasing strangeness of the channel. The tensor contribution of K and $η$ mesons is negligible in this model. There is no six-quark state in the light flavor world studied so far that can become bound by means of these tensor interactions besides the deuteron. The partial D-wave decay widths of the $IJ^p={1/2}2^+$ N$Ω$ state to spin 0 and 1 $ΛΞ$ final states are 12.0 keV and 21.9 keV respectively. This is a very narrow dibaryon resonance that might be detectable in relativistic heavy ion reactions by existing RHIC detectors through the reconstruction of the vertex mass of the decay product $ΛΞ$ and by the COMPAS detector at CERN or at JHF in Japan and the FAIR project in Germany in the future.
