Multi-quark states

The pentaquark state recently discovered has been discussed based on various quark model calculations. Odd parity for the state can not be ruled out theoretically because contributions related to non-trivial color structures have not been studied completely. Other multiquark states, especially dibaryons, have been discussed also. A strangeness -3 N$Ω$ dibaryon has been shown to have a width as small as 12-22 keV and should be detectable in $Ω$ high productivity reactions such as at RHIC, COMPAS and the planned JHF and FAIR projects.

Majorana-Like (j,0)+(0,j) Representation Spaces: Construction and Physical Interpretation

We present a formalism that extends the Majorana-construction to arbitrary spin (j,0)+(0,j) representation spaces. For the example case of spin-1, a wave equation satisfied by the Majorana-like (1,0)+(0,1) spinors is constructed and its physical content explored. The (j,0)+(0,j) Majorana-construct is found to possess an unusual classical and quantum field theoretic structure. Relevance of our formalism to parity violation, hadronic phenomenologies, and grand unified field theories is briefly pointed out.

High strangeness dibaryons in the extended quark delocalization, color screening model

Dibaryon candidates with strangeness S=-2,-3,-4,-5,-6 are studied in terms of the extended quark delocalization and color screening model. The results show that there are only a few promising low lying dibaryon states: The H and di-Omega may be marginally strong interaction stable but model uncertainties are too large to allow any definitive statement. The SIJ=-3,1/2,2 N-Omega state is 62 MeV lower than the N-Omega threshold and 24 MeV lower than the Lambda-Xi-pi threshold. It might appear as a narrow dibaryon resonance and be detectable in the RHIC detector through the reconstruction of the vertex mass of the Lambda-Xi two body decay. The effects of explicit K and eta meson exchange have been studied and found to be negligible in this model. The mechanisms of effective intermediate range attraction, sigma meson exchange and kinetic energy reduction due to quark delocalization are discussed.

Large Mixing from Small: Pseudo-Dirac Neutrinos and the Singular Seesaw

If the sterile neutrino mass matrix in an otherwise conventional seesaw model has a rank less than the number of flavors, it is possible to produce pseudo-Dirac neutrinos. In a two-flavor, sterile rank 1 case, we demonstrate analytic conditions for large active mixing induced by the existence of (and coupling to) the sterile neutrino components. For the three-flavor, rank 1 case, ``3+2'' scenarios with large mixing also devolve naturally as we show by numerical examples. We observe that, in this approach, small mass differences can develop naturally without any requirement that masses themselves are small. Additionally, we show that significant three channel mixing and limited experimental resolution can combine to produce extracted two channel mixing parameters at variance with the actual values.

3+2 neutrinos in a see-saw variation

If the sterile neutrino mass matrix in an otherwise conventional see-saw model has a rank less than the number of flavors, it is possible to produce pseudo-Dirac neutrinos. For the rank 1 case, 3+2 scenarios devolve naturally, as we show by example. Additionally, we find that the lower rank see-saw suppresses some mass differences, so that small mass differences do not require that the individual masses of each neutrino must also be small.

Valence Quark Distribution in A=3 Nuclei

We calculate the quark distribution function for 3He/3H in a relativistic quark model of nuclear structure which adequately reproduces the nucleon approximation, nuclear binding energies, and nuclear sizes for small nuclei. The results show a clear distortion from the quark distribution function for individual nucleons (EMC effect) arising dominantly from a combination of recoil and quark tunneling effects. Antisymmetrization (Pauli) effects are found to be small due to limited spatial overlaps. We compare our predictions with a published parameterization of the nuclear valence quark distributions and find significant agreement.

The wavelength of neutrino and neutral kaon oscillations

Neutral kaons, and probably also neutrinos, exhibit oscillations between flavor eigenstates, as a result of being produced in a superposition of mass eigenstates. Several recent papers have addressed the question of the energies and momenta of the components of these states, and their effect on the coherence of the states and on the wavelength of the oscillations. We point out that the mass eigenstates need have neither equal momentum nor equal energy, but can nevertheless be coherent, and that a correct treatment of the kinematics recovers the usual result for the wavelength of the flavor oscillations.

Nonlinear Regge trajectories and glueballs

We apply a phenomenological approach based on nonlinear Regge trajectories to glueball states. The parameters, i.e., intercept and threshold, or trajectory termination point beyond which no bound states should exist, are determined from pomeron (scattering) data. Systematic errors inherent to the approach are discussed. We then predict masses of glueballs on the tensor trajectory. For comparison, the approach is applied to available quenched lattice data. We find a discrepancy between the lattice based thresholds and the pomeron threshold that we extract from data.

Which Constituent Quark Model Is Better?

A comparative study has been done by calculating the effective baryon-baryon interactions of the 64 lowest channels consisting of octet and decuplet baryons with three constituent quark models: the extended quark gluon exchange model, the Goldstone boson exchange model and the quark gluon meson exchange hybrid model. We find that these three models give similar results for 44 channels. Further tests of these models are discussed.

Hybridgen: A Model for the Study of QCD Hybrid States

We study the mixing of excited states of a Hydrogen atom in a cavity with de-excited states plus a confined photon as a model for the coupling of quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon hybrid states in QCD. For an interesting range of parameters, the results are analytic. We find a case for which wavefunctions (and hence decay patterns) may be at odds with mass with respect to identification of a state as hybrid or not.

The di-Omega in the extended quark delocalization, color screening model

The Omega-Omega (SIJ=-6,0,0) dibaryon state is studied with the extended quark-delocalization color-screening model including a pi meson exchange tail, which reproduces the properties of the deuteron quantitatively. We find the mass of the di-Omega to be about 45 MeV lower than the Omega-Omega threshold. The effect of channel coupling due to the tensor force has been calculated and found to be small in this case. We have also studied the effect of other pseudoscalar meson exchanges and sensitivity to the short-range cutoff radius, r_0, for the meson exchanges.

Effect of Hadron Dynamics on the Proton Lifetime

A detailed, quantitative re-examination of the effect of hadron dynamics on baryon decay, modeled in terms of Skyrme-field tunneling, indicates that any hadronic suppression should be quite mild. This appears to be another illustration of the `Cheshire-cat' phenomenon, that variation of the apportionment between description of the nucleon as a bag of quarks and description as a Skyrme field configuration has little influence on many nucleon properties. Perhaps the largest remaining uncertainty in evaluating the decay rate has to do with the overlap between a specified quark-antiquark configuration and a final meson state.

A See-Saw Mechanism with light sterile neutrinos

The usual see-saw mechanism for the generation of light neutrino masses is based on the assumption that all of the flavours of right-handed (more properly, sterile) neutrinos are heavy. If the sterile Majorana mass matrix is singular, one or more of the sterile neutrinos will have zero mass before mixing with the active (left-handed) neutrinos and be light after that mixing is introduced. In particular, a rank 1 sterile mass matrix leads naturally to two pseudo-Dirac pairs, one very light active Majorana neutrino and one heavy sterile Majorana neutrino. For any pattern of Dirac masses, there exists a region of parameter space in which the two pseudo-Dirac pairs are nearly degenerate in mass. This, in turn, leads to large amplitude mixing of active states as well as mixing into sterile states.

Neutrino masses or new interactions

Recent proposals to study the mass of the "electron" neutrino at a sensitivity of 0.3 eV can be used to place limits on the right handed and scalar charged currents at a level which improves on the present experimental limits. Indeed the neglect of the possibility of such interactions can lead to the inference of an incorrect value for the mass, as we illustrate.

Neutrino clustering and the Z-burst model

The possibility that the observed Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays are generated by high energy neutrinos creating "Z-bursts" in resonant interactions with the background neutrinos has been proposed, but there are difficulties in generating enough events with reasonable incident neutrino fluxes. We point out that this difficulty is overcome if the background neutrinos have coalesced into "neutrino clouds" --- a possibility previously suggested by some of us in another context. The limitations that this mechanism for the generation of UHECRs places on the high energy neutrino flux, on the masses of the background neutrinos and the characteristics of the neutrino clouds are spelled out.

Phenomenological study of hadron interaction models

We present a phenomenological study of three models with different effective degrees of freedom: a Goldstone Boson Exchange (GBE) model which is based on quark-meson couplings, the quark delocalization, color screening model (QDCSM) which is based on quark-gluon couplings with delocalized quark wavefunctions, and the Fujiwara-Nijmegen (FN) mixed model which includes both quark-meson and quark-gluon couplings. We find that for roughly two-thirds of 64 states consisting of pairs of octet and decuplet baryons, the three models predict similar effective baryon-baryon interactions. This suggests that the three very different models, based on different effective degrees of freedom, are nonetheless all compatible with respect to baryon spectra and baryon-baryon interactions. We also discuss the differences between the three models and their separate characteristics.

The d* dibaryon in the extended quark-delocalization, color-screening model

The quark-delocalization, color-screening model, extended by inclusion of a one-pion-exchange (OPE) tail, is applied to the study of the deuteron and the d* dibaryon. The results show that the properties of the deuteron (an extended object) are well reproduced, greatly improving the agreement with experimental data as compared to our previous study (without OPE). At the same time, the mass and decay width of the d* (a compact object) are, as expected, not altered significantly.

Spectroscopy "windows" of quark-antiquark mesons and glueballs with effective Regge trajectories

Regge trajectories of quark-antiquark mesons can be well approximated for phenomenology purposes by a specific nonlinear form, reflecting that the flux tubes cannot be arbitrarily large, but break due to the effect of pair-production. If confirmed, this would imply that there is only a finite number of bound states on each trajectory, and consequently, an existence of ``spectroscopy windows'' for each flavor. Here we present our results for these windows.
