Structural and Magnetic Dynamics in the Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy Ni$_2$MnGa

Magnetic shape memory Heusler alloys are multiferroics stabilized by the correlations between electronic, magnetic and structural order. To study these correlations we use time resolved x-ray diffraction and magneto-optical Kerr effect experiments to measure the laser induced dynamics in a Heusler alloy Ni$_2$MnGa film and reveal a set of timescales intrinsic to the system. We observe a coherent phonon which we identify as the amplitudon of the modulated structure and an ultrafast phase transition leading to a quenching of the incommensurate modulation within 300~fs with a recovery time of a few ps. The thermally driven martensitic transition to the high temperature cubic phase proceeds via nucleation within a few ps and domain growth limited by the speed of sound. The demagnetization time is 320~fs, which is comparable to the quenching of the structural modulation.

Towards NNLO corrections in B --> D pi

We describe the status of the calculation of the branching ratio for the decay \bar B^0 --> D^+ pi^- to NNLO in QCD factorization. Here, we present the result for the colour-singlet hard-scattering kernel. The calculation has been performed using multi-loop techniques like Laporta's reduction to master integrals, and Mellin-Barnes representations and differential equations for evaluating the latter.

Systematics of the cusp anomalous dimension

We study the velocity-dependent cusp anomalous dimension in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In a paper by Correa, Maldacena, Sever, and one of the present authors, a scaling limit was identified in which the ladder diagrams are dominant and are mapped onto a Schrodinger problem. We show how to solve the latter in perturbation theory and provide an algorithm to compute the solution at any loop order. The answer is written in terms of harmonic polylogarithms. Moreover, we give evidence for two curious properties of the result. Firstly, we observe that the result can be written using a subset of harmonic polylogarithms only, at least up to six loops. Secondly, we show that in a light-like limit, only single zeta values appear in the asymptotic expansion, again up to six loops. We then extend the analysis of the scaling limit to systematically include subleading terms. This leads to a Schrodinger-type equation, but with an inhomogeneous term. We show how its solution can be computed in perturbation theory, in a way similar to the leading order case. Finally, we analyze the strong coupling limit of these subleading contributions and compare them to the string theory answer. We find agreement between the two calculations.

Calculation of coercivity of magnetic nanostructures at finite temperatures

We report a finite temperature micromagnetic method (FTM) that allows for the calculation of the coercive field of arbitrary shaped magnetic nanostructures at time scales of nanoseconds to years. Instead of directly solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, the coercive field is obtained without any free parameter by solving a non linear equation, which arises from the transition state theory. The method is applicable to magnetic structures where coercivity is determined by one thermally activated reversal or nucleation process. The method shows excellent agreement with experimentally obtained coercive fields of magnetic nanostructures and provides a deeper understanding of the mechanism of coercivity.

Electromagnetic Logarithms in B -> X_s l+ l-

The B -> X_s l+ l- decay rate is known at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. It is proportional to alpha_em (mu)^2 and has a +- 4% scale uncertainty before including the O(alpha_em log(M_W^2/m_b^2)) electromagnetic corrections. We evaluate these corrections and confirm the earlier findings of Bobeth et al. >. Furthermore, we complete the calculation of logarithmically enhanced electromagnetic effects by including also QED corrections to the matrix elements of four-fermion operators. Such corrections contain a collinear logarithm log(m_b^2/m_l^2) that survives integration over the low dilepton invariant mass region 1 GeV^2 < q^2 < 6 GeV^2 and enhances the integrated decay rate in this domain. For the low-q^2 integrated branching ratio in the muonic case, we find B (B -> X_s mu^+mu^-) = (1.59 +- 0.11) 10^(-6), where the error includes the parametric and perturbative uncertainties only. For B (B -> X_s e^+e^-), in the current BaBar and Belle setups, the logarithm of the lepton mass gets replaced by angular cut parameters and the integrated branching ratio for the electrons is expected to be close to that for the muons.

Solid oxygen as converter for the production of ultra-cold neutrons

We have investigated solid oxygen as a converter material for the production of ultra-cold neutrons. In a first series of experiments the crystal preparation was examined. An optically semi-transparent solid $α$-oxygen crystal has been prepared. In a second series of experiments such a crystal prepared indentically as in the first series of experiments has been exposed to the cold neutron flux of the MEPHISTO beam line of the FRM II. Ultra-cold neutrons produced inside the oxygen crystal have been extracted and the count rates have been measured at different converter temperatures. The results of these measurements give a clear signal of the superthermal UCN production mechanism in $α$-oxygen. The mean free loss length of UCN inside the crystal at a temperature of 5\,K was determined to be in the order of $20\,\mathrm{cm}$.

The quark and gluon form factors to three loops in QCD through to O(eps^2)

We give explicit formulae for the O(eps) and O(eps^2) contributions to the unrenormalised three loop QCD corrections to quark and gluon form factors. These contributions have at most transcendentality weight eight. The O(eps) terms of the three-loop form factors are required for the extraction of the four-loop quark and gluon collinear anomalous dimensions. The O(eps^2) terms represent an irreducible contribution to the finite part of the form factors at four-loops. For the sake of completeness, we also give the contributions to the one and two loop form factors to the same transcendentality weight eight.

Heavy-to-light currents at NNLO in SCET and semi-inclusive anti-B ---> X(s) l+ l- decay

We perform the two-loop matching calculation for heavy-to-light currents from QCD onto soft-collinear effective theory for the complete set of Dirac structures. The newly obtained matching coefficients enter several phenomenological applications, of which we discuss heavy-to-light form factor ratios and exclusive radiative decays, as well as the semi-inclusive decay anti-B ---> X(s) l+ l-. For this decay, we observe a significant shift of the forward-backward asymmetry zero and find q_0^2 = (3.34 +0.22 -0.25) GeV^2 for an invariant mass cut m_X^cut=2.0 GeV.

Master integrals for massless three-loop form factors

We summarize the results for the master integrals of the three-loop quark and gluon form factor in massless QCD. Working in dimensional regularization we extract poles up to 1/epsilon^6. The computational techniques involve, among others, the expansion of higher transcendental functions and the Mellin-Barnes method. The coefficients of the Laurent expansion in epsilon are given either analytically or numerically to high precision.

Optical Trapping of an Ion

For several decades, ions have been trapped by radio frequency (RF) and neutral particles by optical fields. We implement the experimental proof-of-principle for trapping an ion in an optical dipole trap. While loading, initialization and final detection are performed in a RF trap, in between, this RF trap is completely disabled and substituted by the optical trap. The measured lifetime of milliseconds allows for hundreds of oscillations within the optical potential. It is mainly limited by heating due to photon scattering. In future experiments the lifetime may be increased by further detuning the laser and cooling the ion. We demonstrate the prerequisite to merge both trapping techniques in hybrid setups to the point of trapping ions and atoms in the same optical potential.

NNLO vertex corrections to non-leptonic B decays: Tree amplitudes

The colour-suppressed tree amplitude in non-leptonic B decays is particularly sensitive to perturbative and non-perturbative corrections. We calculate the two-loop (NNLO) vertex corrections to the colour-suppressed and colour-allowed tree amplitudes in QCD factorization. Our results are given completely analytically, including the full dependence on the charm quark mass. We then update theoretical predictions for a range of interesting observables derived from pi pi, pi rho, and rho rho final states that do not depend (significantly) on penguin contributions, and hence are now available with NNLO accuracy. We observe good agreement with experimental data within experimental and theoretical errors, except for observables involving the pi^0 pi^0 branching fraction.

Nine-Propagator Master Integrals for Massless Three-Loop Form Factors

We complete the calculation of master integrals for massless three-loop form factors by computing the previously-unknown three diagrams with nine propagators in dimensional regularisation. Each of the integrals yields a six-fold Mellin-Barnes representation which we use to compute the coefficients of the Laurent expansion in epsilon. Using Riemann zeta functions of up to weight six, we give fully analytic results for one integral; for a second, analytic results for all but the finite term; for the third, analytic results for all but the last two coefficients in the Laurent expansion. The remaining coefficients are given numerically to sufficiently high accuracy for phenomenological applications.

Quantum walk of a trapped ion in phase space

We implement the proof of principle for the quantum walk of one ion in a linear ion trap. With a single-step fidelity exceeding 0.99, we perform three steps of an asymmetric walk on the line. We clearly reveal the differences to its classical counterpart if we allow the walker/ion to take all classical paths simultaneously. Quantum interferences enforce asymmetric, non-classical distributions in the highly entangled degrees of freedom (of coin and position states). We theoretically study and experimentally observe the limitation in the number of steps of our approach, that is imposed by motional squeezing. We propose an altered protocol based on methods of impulsive steps to overcome these restrictions, in principal allowing to scale the quantum walk to several hundreds of steps.

On a two-loop crossed six-line master integral with two massive lines

We compute the two-loop crossed six-line vertex master integral with two massive lines in dimensional regularisation, and give the result up to the finite part in D-4. We focus in particular on the purely analytical calculation of the boundary condition which we derive from a three-fold Mellin-Barnes representation. We also describe how the computation of the boundary condition is used to derive three non-trivial relations among harmonic polylogarithms of the sixth root of unity.

The Role of Collinear Photons in the Rare Decay anti-B --> X(s) l+ l-

We review the phenomenology of the rare decay \bar B -> X_s l+ l-. We present the results of a detailed phenomenological analysis and discuss the role of the decay in the search for new physics at present and future colliders. Moreover, we extensively elaborate on the size of electromagnetic logarithms ln(m_b^2/m_l^2) in view of experimental cuts. We point out the differences in the analyses of BaBar and Belle and give suggestions on how to treat collinear photons in the experimental analyses. These recommendations correspond precisely to theoretical prescriptions and can be combined with measurements performed at a Super-B factory.

Hypergeometric functions with rational arguments

We elaborate on the expansion of hypergeometric functions about rational parameters, where we focus mainly on the integer and half-integer case. The strategy and the basic steps of a recently developed algorithm for the expansion about half-integer parameters are described. The algorithm is implemented in the Mathematica package HypExp, by means of which we derive (partially new) results of selected multi-loop Feynman diagrams. Moreover, we give a new formulation of a conjecture in the context of a three-loop master integral in HQET.

Master Integrals for Fermionic Contributions to Massless Three-Loop Form Factors

In this letter we continue the calculation of master integrals for massless three-loop form factors by giving analytical results for those integrals which are relevant for the fermionic contributions proportional to N_F^2, N_F*N, and N_F/N. Working in dimensional regularisation, we express one of the integrals in a closed form which is exact to all orders in epsilon, containing Gamma-functions and hypergeometric functions of unit argument. In all other cases we derive multiple Mellin-Barnes representations from which the coefficients of the Laurent expansion in epsilon are extracted in an analytical form. To obtain the finite part of the three-loop quark and gluon form factors, all coefficients through transcendentality six in the Riemann zeta-function have to be included.
