Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Order in the Fe-substituted Bi-2201 Cuprate in the Heavily Overdoped Regime

Elastic neutron scattering experiments showed incommensurate antiferromagnetic peaks in 5% Fe-substituted Bi-2201 cuprate in the non-superconducting heavily overdoped regime. The incommensurability delta~0.21 is comparable to that observed in Fe-substituted Bi-2201 in the overdoped regime. [Hiraka et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 144501 (2010).] The magnetic correlation length is comparable between the overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes. It is plausible that incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is induced and stabilized by Fe in the heavily overdoped regime, which suggests a robust antiferromagnetic correlation beyond the superconducting dome in the phase diagram.

Intermediate Field Spin(on) Dynamics in $α$-RuCl$_3$

We present comprehensive inelastic neutron spectroscopic maps of the magnetic field-induced disordered phase of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate material $α$-RuCl$_3$. For fields along both in-plane high-symmetry directions we observe that the spin excitation spectrum at and above a magnetic field of 8~T is gapped. Excitation modes then sharpen for increasing field but are consistently broader than experimental resolution even at 13.5~T. The out-of-plane dispersion diminishes in the 7-10~T regime, signifying enhanced two-dimensional behavior as the in-plane liquid correlations are established. In this regime, excitations are very broad and largely flat for all accessible energy-momenta, which is kinematically at odds with a magnon-decay picture. By contrast, a continuum of fractionalized excitations naturally yields a broad continuum response, which crucially may be accompanied by sharper modes of bound states of fractionalized excitations. Their damping by the continuum accounts for the observed spectral broadening and field dependence. Our results provide strong evidence for the existence of fractionalized excitations in $α$-RuCl$_3$ in a magnetic field.

Magnetoelastic dynamics of the "spin Jahn-Teller" transition in CoTi$_{2}$O$_{5}$

CoTi$_{2}$O$_{5}$ has the paradox that low temperature static magnetic order is incompatible with the crystal structure owing to a mirror plane that exactly frustrates magnetic interactions. Despite no observable structural distortion with diffraction, CoTi$_{2}$O$_{5}$ does magnetically order below $T_{\rm N}$ $\sim$ 25 K with the breaking of spin ground state degeneracy proposed to be a realization of the spin Jahn-Teller effect in analogy to the celebrated orbital Jahn-Teller transition. We apply neutron and Raman spectroscopy to study the dynamics of this transition in CoTi$_{2}$O$_{5}$. We find anomalous acoustics associated with a symmetry breaking strain that characterizes the spin Jahn-Teller transition. Crucially, the energy of this phonon coincides with the energy scale of the magnetic excitations, and has the same symmetry of an optic mode, observed with Raman spectroscopy, which atypically softens in energy with decreasing temperature. Taken together, we propose that the energetics of the spin Jahn-Teller effect in CoTi$_{2}$O$_{5}$ are related to cooperative magnetoelastic fluctuations as opposed to conventional soft critical dynamics which typically drive large measurable static displacements.

Zeeman split Kramers doublets in spin-supersolid candidate Na$_{2}$BaCo(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$

Na$_{2}$BaCo(PO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ is a triangular antiferromagnet that displays highly efficient adiabatic demagnetization cooling (J. Xiang $\textit{et al.}$ Nature ${\bf{625}}$, 270 (2024)) near a quantum critical point at $μ_{0}H_{c}\sim 1.6$ T, separating a low-field magnetically disordered from a high-field fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. We apply high resolution backscattering neutron spectroscopy in an applied field to study the magnetic excitations near $μ_{0}H_{c}$. At large fields we observe ferromagnetic fluctuations that gradually transition to being overdamped in energy below $μ_{0}H_{c}$ where the magnetism is spatially disordered. We parameterize the excitations in the high field polarized phase in terms of coupled Zeeman split Kramers doublets originating from the presence of spin-orbit coupling. On reducing the field, the splitting between the Kramers doublets is reduced and if done adiabatically, provides a mechanism for reducing temperature. On lowering the applied field through the $μ_{0}H_{c}$ the excitations characterize a textured phase that we suggest is inefficient for cooling. Low temperature disordered frustrated magnets built on Kramers doublets with nearby quantum critical points provide a route for efficient magnetocalorics.

Nature of the ferromagnet-paramagnet transition in Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$

Neutron scattering, magnetometry, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements were performed to investigate the magnetic order and spin dynamics across the ferromagnet-to-paramagnet transition in the hole-doped Mott insulator Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$TiO$_3$. We find that the transition proceeds through a volume-wise phase separation into ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. Spin fluctuations with a characteristic timescale of $\sim$ 0.1 $μ$s, as detected via $μ$SR, are observed to appear at Ca concentrations $x \geq 0.10$. The magnetic phase separation, accompanied by a modest dynamic response, represents a novel behavior in Mott systems near the loss of magnetic order. It is linked to a previously observed insulator-metal transition and the associated electronic phase separation into hole-poor Mott insulating and hole-rich metallic phases for $0 < x < 0.50$. In particular, the $x$-dependence of the paramagnetic volume fraction strongly correlates with that of the volume fraction of the hole-rich metallic phase. The spin-wave spectra reveal a doping-induced crossover from isotropic to two-dimensional anisotropic exchange interactions, reflecting substantial changes in the orbital state with increasing Ca content.

Incident Beamline Design for a Modern Cold Triple Axis Spectrometer at the High Flux Isotope Reactor

A modern cold triple axis spectrometer is being planned for the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Here, we describe the design of an incident beamline that will put a flux of $\sim 10^8\mathrm{\frac{n}{cm^2 s}}$ on a sample with an area of 2 cm x 2 cm. It takes current physical constraints at HFIR into account and it can accommodate both single and multiplexed analyzer-detector secondary spectrometers and large superconducting magnets. The proposed incident beamline includes a multi-channel guide with horizontal focusing, a neutron velocity selector, components to facilitate an incident beam polarization option, and a double-focusing pyrolytic graphite monochromator. This work describes the process of optimizing the guide system and monochromator and summarizes the expected performance of the incident beamline for non-polarized operation.

$μ$SR Study of the Dipole-Octupole Quantum Spin Ice Candidate Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$

The Ce$^{3+}$ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ possess both dipolar and octupolar character which enables the possibility of novel quantum spin liquid ground states in this material. Here we report new muon spin relaxation and rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on single crystal samples of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in zero magnetic field and in magnetic fields directed along the $[1,\bar{1},0]$ and $[1,1,1]$ crystallographic directions, and for magnetic fields directed both longitudinal and transverse to the direction of muon polarization. Our zero-field results show no signs of magnetic ordering or spin freezing, consistent with earlier zero-field $μ$SR measurements on a powder sample of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, and also with the expectations for a quantum spin ice. However, we measure a more gentle relaxation rate for Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ in zero-field at low temperatures than was previously reported. This difference in relaxation rate is likely due to the low oxidation, and correspondingly, the high stoichiometry of our single crystal samples. Longitudinal field measurements confirm that the magnetic dipole moments in Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ remain dynamic at $T = 0.1$ $\mathrm{K}$. For both $[1,\bar{1},0]$ and $[1,1,1]$ magnetic fields, our $μ$SR Knight shift measurements show a field-induced leveling off of the magnetic susceptibility at low temperature which is qualitatively consistent with corresponding calculations using the numerical-linked-cluster method in combination with recent estimates for the nearest-neighbour exchange parameters of Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

Effect of random antiferromagnetic exchange on the spin waves in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet

Neutron scattering is used to study spin waves in the three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet YTiO$_3$, with spin-spin exchange disorder introduced $via$ La-substitution at the Y site. No significant changes are observed in the spin-wave dispersion up to a La concentration of 20%. However, a strong broadening of the spectrum is found, indicative of shortened spin-wave lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations predict minimal changes in exchange constants as a result of average structural changes due to La substitution, in agreement with the data. The absence of significant changes in the spin-wave dispersion, the considerable lifetime effect, and the reduced ordered magnetic moment previously observed in the La-substituted system are qualitatively captured by an isotropic, nearest-neighbor, three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet model with random antiferromagnetic exchange. We therefore establish Y$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ as a model system to study the effect of antiferromagnetic spin-exchange disorder in a three-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet.

Witnessing quantum criticality and entanglement in the triangular antiferromagnet KYbSe$_2$

The Heisenberg triangular lattice quantum spin liquid and the phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. This work investigates a new spin-half Yb$^{3+}$ delafossite material, KYbSe$_2$, whose inelastic neutron scattering spectra reveal a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data reveals significant multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbors, and analysis of its magnetic exchange couplings shows close proximity to the triangular lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger-boson theory and tensor network calculations with a significant second-neighbor coupling $J_2$. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the $K$ point shows a scaling collapse in $\hbarω/k_\mathrm{B}T$ down to 0.3 K, indicating a second-order quantum phase transition. Comparing this to previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at larger $J_2$ is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. We thus show that KYbSe$_2$ is close to a spin liquid phase, which in turn sheds light on the theoretical phase diagram itself.

Spin-orbit coupling controlled ground states in the double perovskite iridates A2BIrO6 (A = Ba, Sr; B = Lu, Sc)

Iridates with the 5$d^4$ electronic configuration have attracted recent interest due to reports of magnetically-ordered ground states despite longstanding expectations that their strong spin-orbit coupling would generate a $J = 0$ electronic ground state for each Ir$^{5+}$ ion. The major focus of prior research has been on the double perovskite iridates Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ and Sr$_2$YIrO$_6$, where the nature of the ground states (i.e. ordered vs non-magnetic) is still controversial. Here we present neutron powder diffraction, high energy resolution fluorescence detected x-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD-XAS), resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), magnetic susceptibility, and muon spin relaxation data on the related double perovskite iridates Ba$_2$LuIrO$_6$, Sr$_2$LuIrO$_6$, Ba$_2$ScIrO$_6$, and Sr$_2$ScIrO$_6$ that enable us to gain a general understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties for this family of materials. Our HERFD-XAS and RIXS measurements establish $J = 0$ electronic ground states for the Ir$^{5+}$ ions in all cases, with similar values for Hund's coupling $J_{\rm H}$ and the spin-orbit coupling constant $λ_{\rm SOC}$. Our bulk susceptibility and muon spin relaxation data find no evidence for long-range magnetic order or spin freezing, but they do reveal weak magnetic signals that are consistent with extrinsic local moments. Our results indicate that the large $λ_{\rm SOC}$ is the key driving force behind the electronic and magnetic ground states realized in the 5$d^4$ double perovskite iridates, which agrees well with conventional wisdom.

Growth and characterization of large (Y,La)TiO$_3$ and (Y,Ca)TiO$_3$ single crystals

The Mott-insulating rare-earth titanates (RTiO$_3$, R being a rare-earth ion) are an important class of materials that encompasses interesting spin-orbital phases as well as ferromagnet-antiferromagnet and insulator-metal transitions. The growth of these materials has been plagued by difficulties related to overoxidation, which arises from a strong tendency of Ti$^{3+}$ to oxidize to Ti$^{4+}$. We describe our efforts to grow sizable single crystals of YTiO$_3$ and its La-substituted and Ca-doped variants with the optical travelling-solvent floating-zone technique. We present sample characterization $via$ chemical composition analysis, magnetometry, charge transport, neutron scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism to understand macroscopic physical property variations associated with overoxidation. Furthermore, we demonstrate a good signal-to-noise ratio in inelastic magnetic neutron scattering measurements of spin-wave excitations. A superconducting impurity phase, found to appear in Ca-doped samples at high doping levels, is identified as TiO.

Nature of the ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition in Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$

We explore the magnetically-ordered ground state of the isovalently-substituted Mott-insulator Y$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ for $x$ $\leq$ 0.3 via single crystal growth, magnetometry, neutron diffraction, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We find that the decrease in the magnetic transition temperature on approaching the ferromagnetic (FM) - antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase boundary at the La concentration $x_c$ $\approx$ 0.3 is accompanied by a strong suppression of both bulk and local ordered magnetic moments, along with a volume-wise separation into magnetically-ordered and paramagnetic regions. The thermal phase transition does not show conventional second-order behavior, since neither a clear signature of dynamic critical behavior nor a power-law divergence of the magnetic correlation length is found for the studied substitution range; this finding becomes increasingly obvious with substitution. Finally, from SANS and magnetometry measurements, we discern a crossover from easy-axis to easy-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy with increasing La substitution. These results indicate complex changes in magnetic structure upon approaching the phase boundary.

Prediction and Observation of Intermodulation Sidebands from Anharmonic Phonons

A quantum Langevin model, similar to models used recently for optomechanics, was used to predict intermodulation phonon sidebands (IPS). Ab initio calculations of anharmonic phonons in rocksalt NaBr showed these spectral features as "many-body effects". Modern inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a crystal of NaBr at 300K revealed diffuse intensity at high phonon energy from a predicted upper IPS. The transverse optical (TO) part of the new features originates from phonon intermodulation between the transverse acoustic (TA) and TO phonons. The longitudinal optical (LO) spectral features originate from three-phonon coupling between the TA modes and the TO lattice modes. The partner lower IPS proves to be an "intrinsic localized mode". Interactions with the thermal bath broaden and redistribute the spectral weight of the IPS pair. These sidebands are a probe of anharmonicity and quantum noise, which originate from interactions between the phonons in NaBr.

Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of nearly-ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 iridium halides

Heavy transition metal magnets with $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 electronic ground states have attracted recent interest due to their penchant for hosting new classes of quantum spin liquids and superconductors. Unfortunately, model systems with ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 states are scarce due to the importance of non-cubic local distortions in most candidate materials. In this work, we identify a family of iridium halide systems [i.e. K$_2$IrCl$_6$, K$_2$IrBr$_6$, (NH$_4$)$_2$IrCl$_6$, and Na$_2$IrCl$_6 \cdotp $ 6(H$_2$O)] with Ir$^{4+}$ electronic ground states in extremely close proximity to the ideal $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 limit, despite a variation in the low-temperature global crystal structures. We also find ordered magnetic ground states for the three anhydrous systems, with single crystal neutron diffraction on K$_2$IrBr$_6$ revealing Type-I antiferromagnetism. This spin configuration is consistent with expectations for significant Kitaev exchange in a face-centered-cubic magnet.

Magnetic structure and exchange interactions in the layered semiconductor CrPS4

Compounds with two-dimensional (2D) layers of magnetic ions weakly connected by van der Waals bonding offer routes to enhance quantum behavior, stimulating both fundamental and applied interest. CrPS4 is one such magnetic van der Waals material, however, it has undergone only limited investigation. Here we present a comprehensive series of neutron scattering measurements to determine the magnetic structure and exchange interactions. The observed magnetic excitations allow a high degree of constraint on the model parameters not normally associated with measurements on a powder sample. The results demonstrate the 2D nature of the magnetic interactions, while also revealing the importance of interactions along 1D chains within the layers. The subtle role of competing interactions is observed, which manifest in a non-trivial magnetic transition and a tunable magnetic structure in a small applied magnetic field through a spin-flop transition. Our results on the bulk compound provide insights that can be applied to an understanding of the behavior of reduced layer CrPS4.

Revisiting the Kitaev material candidacy of Ir4+ double perovskite iridates

Quantum magnets with significant bond-directional Ising interactions, so-called Kitaev materials, have attracted tremendous attention recently in the search for exotic spin liquid states. Here we present a comprehensive set of measurements that enables us to investigate the crystal structures, Ir$^{4+}$ single ion properties, and magnetic ground states of the double perovskite iridates La$_2B$IrO$_6$ ($B$ $=$ Mg, Zn) and $A_2$CeIrO$_6$ ($A$ $=$ Ba, Sr) with a large nearest neighbor distance $>$ 5 Angstroms between Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Our neutron powder diffraction data on Ba$_2$CeIrO$_6$ can be refined in the cubic space group Fm$\bar{3}$m, while the other three systems are characterized by weak monoclinic structural distortions. Despite the variance in the non-cubic crystal field experienced by the Ir$^{4+}$ ions in these materials, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering are consistent with $J_{\rm eff}$ $=$ 1/2 moments in all cases. Furthermore, neutron scattering and resonant magnetic x-ray scattering show that these systems host A-type antiferromagnetic order. These electronic and magnetic ground states are consistent with expectations for face-centered-cubic magnets with significant antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange, which indicates that spacing magnetic ions far apart may be a promising design principle for uncovering additional Kitaev materials.

Extended exchange interactions stabilize long-period magnetic structures in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$

The topologically-protected, chiral soliton lattice is a unique state of matter offering intriguing functionality and it may serve as a robust platform for storing and transporting information in future spintronics devices. While the monoaxial chiral magnet Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ is known to host this exotic state in an applied magnetic field, its detailed microscopic origin has remained a matter of debate. Here we work towards addressing this open question by measuring the spin wave spectrum of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ over the entire Brillouin zone with inelastic neutron scattering. The well-defined spin wave modes allow us to determine the values of several microscopic interactions for this system. The experimental data is well-explained by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with exchange constants up to third nearest neighbor and an easy plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy term. Our work shows that both the second and third nearest neighbor exchange interactions contribute to the formation of the helimagnetic and chiral soliton lattice states in this robust three-dimensional magnet.

Evolution of Magnetic and Orbital Properties in the Magnetically-Diluted A-Site Spinel Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Rh$_2$O$_4$

In frustrated spinel antiferromagnets, dilution with non-magnetic ions can be a powerful strategy for probing unconventional spin states or uncovering interesting phenomena. Here, we present X-ray, neutron scattering and thermodynamic studies of the effects of magnetic dilution of the tetragonally-distorted A-site spinel antiferromagnet, CuRh$_2$O$_4$, with non-magnetic Zn$^{2+}$ ions. Our data confirm the helical spin order recently identified at low-temperatures in this material, and further demonstrate a systematic suppression of the associated Néel temperature with increasing site dilution towards a continuous transition with critical doping of $x_{spin} \sim 0.44$. Interestingly, this critical doping is demonstrably distinct from a second structural critical point at $x_{JT} \sim 0.6$, which is consistent with the suppression of orbital order on the A-site through a classical percolative mechanism. This anomalously low value for $x_{spin}$ is confirmed via multiple measurements, and is inconsistent with predictions of classical percolation theory, suggesting that the spin transition in this material is driven by an enhancement of pre-existing spin fluctuations with weak dilution.
