First test of $O(α^{2})$ correction of the orthopositronium decay rate

Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. New precise measurement of orthopositronium decay rate has been performed with an accuracy of 150 ppm. This result is consistent with the last three results and also the 2nd order correction. The result combined with the last three is 7.0401$\pm0.0007μ\mathrm{sec}^{-1}$ (100 ppm), which is consistent with the 2nd order correction and differs from the 1st order calculation by 2.6$σ$ It is the first test to validate the 2nd order correction.

High-energy electron observations by PPB-BETS flight in Antarctica

We have observed cosmic-ray electrons from 10 GeV to 800 GeV by a long duration balloon flight using Polar Patrol Balloon (PPB) in Antarctica. The observation was carried out for 13 days at an average altitude of 35 km in January 2004. The detector is an imaging calorimeter composed of scintillating-fiber belts and plastic scintillators inserted between lead plates with 9 radiation lengths. The performance of the detector has been confirmed by the CERN-SPS beam test and also investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations. New telemetry system using a commercial satellite of Iridium, power supply by solar batteries, and automatic level control using CPU have successfully been developed and operated during the flight. From the long duration balloon observations, we derived the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray electrons in the energy range from 100 GeV to 800 GeV. In addition, for the first time we derived the electron arrival directions above 100 GeV, which is consistent with the isotropic distribution.

Precision measurements of positronium decay rate and energy level

Positronium is an ideal system for the research of the bound state QED. New precise measurement of orthopositronium decay rate has been performed with an accuracy of 150 ppm, and the result combined with the last three is 7.0401 +- 0.0007 mu s^-1. It is the first result to validate the 2nd order correction. The Hyper Fine Splitting of positronium is sensitive to the higher order corrections of the QED prediction and also to the new physics beyond Standard Model via the quantum oscillation into virtual photon. The discrepancy of 3.5 sigma is found recently between the measured values and the QED prediction (O(alpha^3)). It might be due to the contribution of the new physics or the systematic problems in the previous measurements: (non-thermalized Ps and non-uniformity of the magnetic field). We propose new methods to measure HFS precisely without the these uncertainties.

A Nanostructual Microwave Probe Used for Atomic Force Microscope

In order to develop a new structure microwave probe, the fabrication of AFM probe on the GaAs wafer was studied. A waveguide was introduced by evaporating Au film on the top and bottom surfaces of the GaAs AFM probe. A tip having 8 micrometers high, and curvature radius about 50 nm was formed. The dimensions of the cantilever are 250x30x15 micrometers. The open structure of the waveguide at the tip of the probe was introduced by using FIB fabrication. AFM topography of a grating sample was measured by using the fabricated GaAs microwave probe. The fabricated probe was found having nanometer scale resolution, and microwave emission was detected successfully at the tip of the probe by approaching Cr-V steel and Au wire samples.

A Possible Future Long Baseline Neutrino and Nucleon Decay Experiment with a 100 kton Liquid Argon TPC at Okinoshima using the J-PARC Neutrino Facility

In this paper, we consider the physics performance of a single far detector composed of a 100 kton next generation Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) possibly located at shallow depth, coupled to the J-PARC neutrino beam facility with a realistic 1.66 MW operation of the Main Ring. The new far detector could be located in the region of Okinoshima islands (baseline $L\sim 658$ km). Our emphasis is based on the measurement of the $θ_{13}$ and $δ_{CP}$ parameters, possibly following indications for a non-vanishing $θ_{13}$ in T2K, and relies on the opportunity offered by the LAr TPC to reconstruct the incoming neutrino energy with high precision compared to other large detector technologies. We mention other possible baselines like for example J-PARC-Kamioka (baseline $L\sim 295$ km), or J-PARC-Eastern Korean coast (baseline $L\sim 1025$ km). Such a detector would also further explore the existence of proton decays.

Development of a Nanostructual Microwave Probe Based on GaAs

With the development of nanotechnology, the measurement of electrical properties in local area of materials and devices has become a great need. Although a lot kind of scanning probe microscope have been developed for satisfying the requirement of nanotechnology, a microscope technique which can determine electrical properties in local area of materials and devices is not yet developed. Recently, microwave microscope has been an interest to many researchers, due to its potential in the evaluation of electrical properties of materials and devices. The advance of microwave is that the response of materials is directly relative to the electromagnetic properties of materials. However, because of the problem of the structure of probes, nanometer-scale resolution has not been successful. To achieve the goal, a new structure microwave probe is required. In this paper, we report a nanostructural microwave probe. To restrain the attenuation of microwave in the probe, GaAs was used as the substrate of the probe. To obtain the desired structure, wet etching was used to fabricate the probe. Different with the dry etching, a side-etching will occur under the etching mask. Utilizing this property, a micro tip can be fabricated by etching a wafer, of which a small mask was introduced on the surface in advance.

Unbound excited states in 19,17C

The neutron-rich carbon isotopes 19,17C have been investigated via proton inelastic scattering on a liquid hydrogen target at 70 MeV/nucleon. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics was employed to reconstruct the energy spectrum, in which fast neutrons and charged fragments were detected in coincidence using a neutron hodoscope and a dipole magnet system. A peak has been observed with an excitation energy of 1.46(10) MeV in 19C, while three peaks with energies of 2.20(3), 3.05(3), and 6.13(9) MeV have been observed in 17C. Deduced cross sections are compared with microscopic DWBA calculations based on p-sd shell model wave functions and modern nucleon-nucleus optical potentials. Jpi assignments are made for the four observed states as well as the ground states of both nuclei.

Prospects for the direct detection of neutralino dark matter in orbifold scenarios

We analyse the phenomenology of orbifold scenarios from the heterotic superstring, and the resulting theoretical predictions for the direct detection of neutralino dark matter. In particular, we study the parameter space of these constructions, computing the low-energy spectrum and taking into account the most recent experimental and astrophysical constraints, as well as imposing the absence of dangerous charge and colour breaking minima. In the remaining allowed regions the spin-independent part of the neutralino-proton cross section is calculated and compared with the sensitivity of dark matter detectors. In addition to the usual non universalities of the soft terms in orbifold scenarios due to the modular weight dependence, we also consider D-term contributions to scalar masses. These are generated by the presence of an anomalous U(1), providing more flexibility in the resulting soft terms, and are crucial in order to avoid charge and colour breaking minima. Thanks to the D-term contribution, large neutralino detection cross sections can be found, within the reach of projected dark matter detectors.

Cosmic-ray spectra of primary protons and high altitude muons deconvolved from observed atmospheric gamma rays

We have observed atmospheric gamma rays from 30GeV to 8TeV, using emulsion chambers at balloon altitudes, accumulating the largest total exposure in this energy range to date, SOT ~ 6.66m^2.sr.day. At very high altitudes, with residual overburden only a few g/cm^2, atmospheric gamma rays are mainly produced by a single interaction of primary cosmic rays with overlying atmospheric nuclei. Thus, we can use these gamma rays to study the spectrum of primary cosmic rays and their products in the atmosphere. From the observed atmospheric gamma ray spectrum, we deconvolved the primary cosmic-ray proton spectrum, assuming appropriate hadronic interaction models. Our deconvolved proton spectrum covers the energy range from 200GeV to 50TeV, which fills a gap in the currently available primary cosmic-ray proton spectra. We also estimated the atmospheric muon spectrum above 30GeV at high altitude from our gamma-ray spectrum, almost without reference to the primary cosmic rays, and compared the estimated flux with direct muon observations below 10GeV.

Proximity Effect in a Superconductor-Metallofullerene-Superconductor Molecular Junction

We report low-temperature transport measurements through molecules of Gd metallofullerenes between superconducting suspended electrodes. The presence and number of molecules in the 2 nm-wide gap between electrodes was determined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find that a junction containing a single metallofullerene dimer between superconducting electrodes displays signs of proximity-induced superconductivity. In contrast, no proximity effects develops in junctions containing larger cluster of metallofulerenes. These results can be understood by taking into account multiple Andreev reflections, and the spin states of the Gd atoms.

Coulomb and nuclear breakup of a halo nucleus 11Be

Breakup reactions of the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on Pb and C targets at about 70 MeV/u have been investigated by measuring the momentum vectors of the incident 11Be, outgoing 10Be, and neutron in coincidence. The relative energy spectra as well as the angular distributions of the 10Be+n center of mass have been extracted for both targets. For the breakup on Pb target, the selection of forward scattering angles is found to be effective to extract almost purely the first-order E1 Coulomb breakup component, and to exclude the nuclear contribution and higher-order Coulomb breakup components. This angle-selected energy spectrum is thus used to deduce the spectroscopic factor for the 10Be(0+) 2s_1/2 configuration in 11Be which is found to be 0.72+-0.04 with B(E1) up to Ex=4 MeV of 1.05+-0.06 e2fm2. The energy weighted E1 strength up to Ex=4 MeV explains 70+-10% of the cluster sum rule, consistent with the obtained spectroscopic factor. The non-energy weighted sum rule is used to extract the root mean square distance of the halo neutron to be 5.77(16) fm, consistent with previously known values. In the breakup with C target, we have observed the excitations to the known unbound states in 11Be at Ex=1.78 MeV and 3.41 MeV. Angular distributions for these states show the diffraction pattern characteristic of L=2 transitions, resulting in J^pi =(3/2,5/2)+ assignment for these states. We finally find that even for the C target the E1 Coulomb direct breakup mechanism becomes dominant at very forward angles.

Search for Dark Matter WIMPs using Upward Through-going Muons in Super-Kamiokande

We present the results of indirect searches for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) with 1679.6 live days of data from the Super-Kamiokande detector using neutrino-induced upward through-going muons. The search is performed by looking for an excess of high energy muon neutrinos from WIMP annihilations in the Sun, the core of the Earth, and the Galactic Center, as compared to the number expected from the atmospheric neutrino background. No statistically significant excess was seen. We calculate flux limits in various angular cones around each of the above celestial objects. We obtain conservative model-independent upper limits on WIMP-nucleon cross-section as a function of WIMP mass and compare these results with the corresponding results from direct dark matter detection experiments.

The Most Likely Sources of High Energy Cosmic-Ray Electrons in Supernova Remnants

Evidences of non-thermal X-ray emission and TeV gamma-rays from the supernova remnants (SNRs) has strengthened the hypothesis that primary Galactic cosmic-ray electrons are accelerated in SNRs. High energy electrons lose energy via synchrotron and inverse Compton processes during propagation in the Galaxy. Due to these radiative losses, TeV electrons liberated from SNRs at distances larger than ~1 kpc, or times older than ~10^5 yr, cannot reach the solar system. We investigated the cosmic-ray electron spectrum observed in the solar system using an analytical method, and considered several candidate sources among nearby SNRs which may contribute to the high energy electron flux. Especially, we discuss the effects for the release time from SNRs after the explosion, as well as the deviation of a source spectrum from a simple power-law. From this calculation, we found that some nearby sources such as the Vela, Cygnus Loop, or Monogem could leave unique signatures in the form of identifiable structure in the energy spectrum of TeV electrons and show anisotropies towards the sources, depending on when the electrons are liberated from the remnant. This suggests that, in addition to providing information on the mechanisms of acceleration and propagation of cosmic-rays, specific cosmic-ray sources can be identified through the precise electron observation in the TeV region.

Solution of Orthopositronium lifetime Puzzle

The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium formed in ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder is measured using the direct $2γ$ correction method such that the time dependence of the pick-off annihilation rate is precisely determined. The decay rate of orthopositronium is found to be $7.0396\pm0.0012 (stat.)\pm0.0011 (sys.)μs^{-1}$, which is consistent with our previous measurements with about twice the accuracy. Results agree well with the $O(α^2)$ QED prediction, and also with a result reported very recently using nanoporous film.

Precision Measurement of Orthopositronium Decay Rate Using SiO_2 Powder

The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium formed in ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder is measured using the direct $2γ$ correction method such that the time dependence of the pick-off annihilation rate is precisely determined using high energy-resolution germanium detectors. As a systematic test, two different types of ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder are used with consistent findings. The intrinsic decay rate of orthopositronium is found to be $7.0396\pm0.0012 (stat.)\pm0.0011 (sys.)μs^{-1}$, which is consistent with previous measurements using ${\rm SiO_2}$ powder with about twice the accuracy. Results agree well with a recent $O(α^2)$ QED prediction, varying $3.8-5.6$ experimental standard deviations from other measurements.

Non-equivalence between Heisenberg XXZ spin chain and Thirring model

The Bethe ansatz equations for the spin 1/2 Heisenberg XXZ spin chain are numerically solved, and the energy eigenvalues are determined for the anti-ferromagnetic case. We examine the relation between the XXZ spin chain and the Thirring model, and show that the spectrum of the XXZ spin chain is different from that of the regularized Thirring model.

Threshold Electrodisintegration of ^3He

Cross sections were measured for the near-threshold electrodisintegration of ^3He at momentum transfer values of q=2.4, 4.4, and 4.7 fm^{-1}. From these and prior measurements the transverse and longitudinal response functions R_T and R_L were deduced. Comparisons are made against previously published and new non-relativistic A=3 calculations using the best available NN potentials. In general, for q<2 fm^{-1} these calculations accurately predict the threshold electrodisintegration of ^3He. Agreement at increasing q demands consideration of two-body terms, but discrepancies still appear at the highest momentum transfers probed, perhaps due to the neglect of relativistic dynamics, or to the underestimation of high-momentum wave-function components.

Large N behavior of string solutions in the Heisenberg model

We investigate the large $N$ behavior of the complex solutions for the two magnon system in the S=1/2 Heisenberg XXZ model. The Bethe ansatz equations are numerically solved for the string solutions with new iteration method. A clear evidence of the violation of the string configurations is found at $N=22,62,121,200,299,417$, but the broken states are still Bethe states. The number of the Bethe states is consistent with the exact diagonalization, except one singular state.
