Effects of LatticeQCD EoS and Continuous Emission on Some ObseErvables

Effects of lattice-QCD-inspired equations of state and continuous emission on some observables are discussed, by solving a 3D hydrodynamics. The particle multiplicity as well as v2 are found to increase in the mid-rapidity. We also discuss the effects of the initial-condition fluctuations.

Dynamical Correlations as Origin of Nonextensive Entropy

We present a simple and general argument showing that a class of dynamical correlations give rise to the so-called Tsallis nonextensive statistics. An example of a system having such a dynamics is given, exhibiting a non-Boltzmann energy distribution. A relation with prethermalization processes is discussed.

The Discovery of Primeval Large-Scale Structures with Forming Clusters at Redshift 6

We report the discovery of primeval large-scale structures (LSSs) including two proto-clusters in a forming phase at z=5.7. We carried out extensive deep narrow-band imaging in the 1 deg^2 sky of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field, and obtained a cosmic map of 515 Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) in a volume with a transverse dimension of 180 Mpc x 180 Mpc and a depth of ~40 Mpc in comoving units. This cosmic map shows filamentary LSSs, including clusters and surrounding 10-40 Mpc scale voids, similar to the present-day LSSs. Our spectroscopic follow-up observations identify overdense regions in which two dense clumps of LAEs with a sphere of 1-Mpc diameter in physical units are included. These clumps show about 130 times higher star-formation rate density, mainly due to a large overdensity, ~80, of LAEs. These clumps would be clusters in a formation phase involving a burst of galaxy formation.

On supercorrelated systems and phase space entrainment

It is demonstrated that power-laws which are modified by logarithmic corrections arise in supercorrelated systems. Their characteristic feature is the energy attributed to a state (or value of a general cost function) which depends nonlinearly on the phase space distribution of the constituents. A onedimensional dissipative deterministic model is introduced which is attracted to a supercorrelated state (phase space entrainment). Extensions of this particular model may have applications in the study of transport and equilibration phenomena, particularly for supply and information networks, or for chemical and biological nonequilibrium systems, while the qualitative arguments presented here are believed to be of more general interest.

Proximity Effect in a Superconductor-Metallofullerene-Superconductor Molecular Junction

We report low-temperature transport measurements through molecules of Gd metallofullerenes between superconducting suspended electrodes. The presence and number of molecules in the 2 nm-wide gap between electrodes was determined by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. We find that a junction containing a single metallofullerene dimer between superconducting electrodes displays signs of proximity-induced superconductivity. In contrast, no proximity effects develops in junctions containing larger cluster of metallofulerenes. These results can be understood by taking into account multiple Andreev reflections, and the spin states of the Gd atoms.

The Subaru Deep Field: The Optical Imaging Data

The Subaru Deep Field (SDF) project is a program of Subaru Observatory to carry out a deep galaxy survey over a blank field as large as 34'x27'. The program consists of very deep multi-band optical imaging, near infrared imaging for smaller portions of the field and follow-up optical spectroscopy. Major scientific goals of the project are to construct large samples of Lyman-break galaxies at z~4-5 and Lyman alpha emitters at z~5.7 and 6.6, and to make detailed studies these very high-redshift galaxy populations. In this paper, we describe the optical imaging observations and data reduction, presenting mosaicked images and object catalogs in seven bandpasses. The optical imaging was made through five broad-band filters, B, V, R, i', z', and two narrow-band filters, NB816 (lambda_c=8150A) and NB921 (lambda_c=9196A) with almost 10 hours long integrations for each band. The limiting magnitudes measured at 3-sigma on a 2" aperture are B=28.45, V=27.74, R=27.80, i'=27.43, z'=26.62, NB816=26.63, and NB921=26.54 in the AB system. The object catalog constructed for each of the seven bands contains more than 10^5 objects. The galaxy number counts corrected for detection incompleteness and star count contribution are found to be consistent with previous results in the literature. The mosaicked images and catalogs of all the bands have been made open to the public on Oct. 1, 2004 on the SDF project website at http://soaps.naoj.org/sdf/.

Fluctuations of the Initial Conditions and the Continuous Emission in Hydrodynamic Description of Two-Pion Interferometry

Within hydrodynamic approach, we study the Bose-Einstein correlation of identical pions by taking into account both event-by-event fluctuating initial conditions and continuous pion emission during the whole development of the hot and dense matter formed in high-energy collisions. Considerable deviations occur, compared to the usual hydro calculations with smooth initial conditions and a sudden freeze-out on a well defined hypersurface. Comparison with data at RHIC shows that, despite rather rough approximation we used here, this description can give account of the $m_T$ dependence of $R_L$ and $R_s$ and improves considerably the one for $R_o$ with respect to the usual version.

A Strong Lyman-alpha Emitter at z=6.33 in the Subaru Deep Field Selected as an i' Dropout

We report on the discovery of a star-forming galaxy at z=6.33 in the Subaru Deep Field. This object is selected as a candidate of an i'-dropout, high-redshift galaxy around z=6 because of its red i'-z' color in our deep optical imaging survey in the Subaru Deep Field. Our follow up optical spectroscopy reveals that this object is a strong Ly-alpha emitter with only very faint ultraviolet continuum. The rest-frame equivalent width of the detected Ly-alpha emission is as much as 130 A. Thus the light detected in our z' image is largely attributed to the Ly-alpha emission, i.e., ~40% of the z'-band flux is the strong Ly-alpha emission, giving a very red i'-z' color. This is consistent with the photometric property of this object because the narrow-band data obtained with the NB921 filter shows a significant depression, z'-NB921 = -0.54 mag. By using the photometric data, we show that some other objects among the 48 i'-dropout high-redshift galaxy candidates found in the Subaru Deep Field also show a significant NB921 depression. We briefly discuss the nature of these NB921-depressed objects.

Incident-Energy Dependence of the Effective Temperature in Heavy-Ion Collisions

We study the behaviour of the effective temperature for K$^+$ in several energy domains. For this purpose, we apply the recently developed SPheRIO code for hydrodynamics in 3+1 dimensions, using both Landau-type compact initial conditions and spatially more spread ones. We show that initial conditions given in small volume, like Landau-type ones, are unable to reproduce the effective temperature together with other data (multiplicities and rapidity distributions). These quantities can be reproduced altogether only when using a large initial volume with an appropriate velocity distribution.

Particle abundances and spectra in the hydrodynamical description of relativistic nuclear collisions with light projectiles

We show that a hydrodynamical model with continuous particle emission instead of sudden freeze out may explain both the observed strange particle and pion abundances and transverse mass spectra for light projectile at SPS energy. We found that the observed enhancement of pion production corresponds, within the context of continuous emission, to the maximal entropy production.

Simple solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics for systems with ellipsoidal symmetry

Simple, self-similar, analytic solutions of (1+3)-dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics are presented for ellipsoidally symmetric finite fireballs corresponding to non-central collisions of heavy ions at relativistic bombarding energies. The hydrodynamical solutions are obtained for a new, general family of equations of state with the possibility of describing phase transitions.

Simple solutions of relativistic hydrodynamics for longitudinally and cylindrically expanding systems

Simple, self-similar, analytic solutions of 1 + 1 dimensional relativistic hydrodynamics are presented, generalizing the Hwa - Bjorken boost-invariant solution to inhomogeneous rapidity distributions. These solutions are generalized also to 1 + 3 dimensional, cylindrically symmetric firetubes, corresponding to central collisions of heavy ions at relativistic bombarding energies.

Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies at z >~ 1 Revealed from a Large, Multicolor Sample of Extremely Red Objects

We study the evolution of elliptical galaxies at z >~ 1 on the basis of a sample of 247 Extremely Red Objects (EROs) with R-Ks >= 3.35 (AB) and Ks <= 22.1 (AB) constructed from BVRi'z'JHKs multicolor data of a 114 arcmin2 area in the Subaru/XMM Deep Survey Field. By fitting template spectra of old ellipticals (OEs) and young, dusty starbursts (DSs) to the multicolor data, we classify EROs into these two classes and estimate their redshifts. We find that 58% of the EROs in our sample belong to the OE class and that 24% of the OEs are fit by a spectrum having a disk component with the B-band bulge-to-total luminosity ratio of <= 0.9. We compare the observed surface density of OEs with predictions from passive evolution models. We then derive rest-frame B-band luminosity functions (LFs) of OEs in our sample at z=1-1.5 and 1.5-2.5. We find that the LF at z=1-1.5 roughly agrees with the LF of local ellipticals if a dimming of 1.3 mag from z=1.25 to the present epoch is assumed. On the other hand, the amplitude of the LF at z=1.5-2.5 is found to be lower than that of the local LF by a factor of ~ 3 over the whole range of magnitude observed. Taking account of a strong decrease in the number density of morphologically classified early-type galaxies at z >~ 1.5 found by several authors, we conclude that the majority of ellipticals seen at present have not established either a red color or a smooth 1/4-law profile before z ~ 1.5$. Optical Spectropolarimetry of SN 2002ap: High Velocity Asymmetric Explosion

We present spectropolarimetry of the Type Ic supernova SN 2002ap and give a preliminary analysis: the data were taken at two epochs, close to and one month later than the visual maximum (2002 February 8). In addition we present June 9 spectropolarimetry without analysis. The data show the development of linear polarization. Distinct polarization profiles were seen only in the O I λ7773 multiplet/Ca II IR triplet absorption trough at maximum light and in the Ca II IR triplet absorption trough a month later, with the latter showing a peak polarization as high as ~2 %. The intrinsic polarization shows three clear position angles: 80 degs for the February continuum, 120 degs for the February line feature, and 150 degs for the March data. We conclude that there are multiple asymmetric components in the ejecta. We suggest that the supernova has a bulk asymmetry with an axial ratio projected on the sky that is different from 1 by of order 10 %. Furthermore, we suggest very speculatively that a high velocity ejecta component moving faster than ~0.115c (e.g., a jet) contributes to polarization in the February epoch.

Witnessing the Hierarchical Assembly of the Brightest Cluster Galaxy in a Cluster at z=1.26

We have obtained a new high-resolution K'-band image of the central region of the rich X-ray cluster RX J0848.9+4452 at z=1.26. We found that the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the cluster is clearly separated into two distinct objects. Whereas the optical to near-infrared colors of the objects are consistent with the predictions of passive evolution models for galaxies formed at high redshift, the luminosities of the two galaxies are both considerably fainter than predicted by passive evolution of BCG's in low and intermediate redshift clusters. We argue that this is evidence of an on-going merger of normal cluster ellipticals to form the dominant galaxy in the core of RX J0848.9+4452. The two galaxies appear to point towards the nearby cluster ClG J0848+4453 and are aligned with the outer X-ray contour of their parent cluster, supporting a model of BCG formation by collimated infall along the surrounding large-scale structure.

Nonextensive Statistics and Multiplicity Distribution in Hadronic Collisions

The multiplicity distribution of particles in relativistic gases is studied in terms of Tsallis' nonextensive statistics. For an entropic index q>1 the multiplicity distribution is wider than the Poisson distribution with the same average number of particles, being similar to the negative binomial distribution commonly used in phenomenological analysis of hadron production in high-energy collisions.

Direct photons from relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN SPS and at RHIC

Assuming QGP as the initial state, we have analyzed the direct photon data, obtained by the WA98 collaboration, in 158 A GeV Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS. It was shown, that for small thermalisation time, two loop rate contribute substantially to high $p_T$ photons. We argue that for extremely short thermalisation time scale, the higher loop contribution should not be neglected. For thermalisation time 0.4 fm or greater, when higher loop contribution are not substantial, the initial temperature of the QGP is not large and the system does not produce enough hard $p_T$ photons to fit the WA98 experiment. For initial time in the ranges of 0.4-1.0 fm, WA98 data could be fitted only if the fluid has initial radial velocity in the range of 0.3-0.5c. The model was applied to predict photon spectrum at RHIC energy.
