History of mass assembly and star formation in clusters

We present deep, panoramic multi-color imaging of the distant rich cluster A851 (z=0.41) using Suprime-Cam on Subaru. These images cover a 27' field of view (~11 h_{50}^{-1}Mpc), and by exploiting photometric redshifts, we can isolate galaxies in a narrow redshift slice at the cluster redshift. Using a sample of ~2700 probable cluster members ( M*+1) at a local density of 100 gal. Mpc^{-2}. The transition in the color-local density behavior occurs at densities corresponding to subclumps within the filaments surrounding the cluster. Identifying the sites where the transition occurs brings us much closer to understanding the mechanisms which are responsible for establishing the present-day relationship between environment and galaxy characteristics.

Event-by-event fluctuations in hydrodynamical description of heavy-ion collisions

Effects caused by the event-by-event fluctuation of the initial conditions in hydrodynamical description of high-energy heavy-ion collisions are investigated. Non-negligible effects appear for several observable quantities, even for a fixed impact parameter $\vec b $. They are sensitive to the equation of state, being the dispersions of the observable quantities in general smaller when the QGP phase appears at the beginning of hydrodynamic evolution than when the fluid remains hadron gas during whole the evolution.

Collective Modes in Neutrino `Beam' Electron-Positron Plasma Interactions

We derive semiclassical neutrino-electron transport equations in the collisionless (Vlasov) limit from the coupled Dirac equations, incorporating the charged and neutral weak current-current as well as electromagnetic interactions. A corresponding linear response theory is derived. In particular, we calculate the response functions for a variety of beam-plasma geometries, which are of interest in a supernova scenario. We apply this to the study of plasmons and to a new class of collective {\it pharon} resonance modes, which are characterized by $ω< q$. We find that the growth rates of the unstable modes correspond to a strongly temperature ($\propto T_ν^2T_e^3$) and linearly momentum dependent e-folding length of about $10^{10}$ km under typical conditions for Type II supernovae. This appears to rule out such long-wavelength collective modes as an efficient means of depositing neutrino energy into the plasma sphere.

Event-by-event analysis of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions in smoothed particle hydrodynamics

The method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is applied for ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The SPH method has several advantages in studying event-by-event fluctuations, which attract much attention in looking for quark gluon plasma (QGP) formation, because it gives a rather simple scheme for solving hydrodynamical equations. Using initial conditions for Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy produced by NeXus event generator, we solve the hydrodynamical equation in event-by-event basis and study the fluctuations of hadronic observables such as dN/dy due to the initial conditions. In particular, fluctuations of elliptic flow coefficient v2 is investigated for both the cases, with and without QGP formation. This can be used as an additional test of QGP formation.

Reconstructing the History of Star Formation in Rich Cluster Cores

We address the current crucial issues on the formation and evolution of cluster galaxies: ie., connection between the Butcher-Oemler effect, assembly of cluster galaxies, truncation of star formation, and the origin of S0 galaxies. We construct the field corrected colour-magnitude (CM) diagrams for 7 CNOC clusters (0.23 M*+1). Truncation of star formation is, however, found to be relatively milder (with a time scale of 1 Gyr) than suggested by the viorent processes such as ram-pressure stripping and/or mergers/harassment. The BO effect is after all found to be a combination of three effects, namely, increasing field star formation activity, increasing galaxy infall rate, and the truncatin of star formation after the accretion. Our approach naturally leads to the history of galaxy assembly and `global' star foramtion for `cluster' galaxies.

A Photometric Study of the Ages and Metallicities of Early-type Galaxies in A2218

We present deep optical and near-infrared imaging of the rich cluster A2218 at z=0.17. Our optical imaging comes from new multicolour Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations in the F450W (B), F606W (V) and F814W (I) passbands. These observations are complemented by deep near-infrared, Ks-band, imaging from the new INGRID imager on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope. This combination provides unique high-precision multicolour optical-infrared photometry and morphological information for a large sample of galaxies in the core of this rich cluster at a lookback time of ~3Gyrs. We analyse the (B-I), (V-I) and (I-Ks) colours of galaxies spanning a range of a factor of 100 in K-band luminosity in this region and compare these with grids of stellar population models. We find that the locus of the colours of the stellar populations in the luminous (>0.5L*) early-type galaxies, both ellipticals and S0s, traces a sequence of varying metallicity at a single age. At fainter luminosities (<0.1L*), this sequence is extended to lower metallicities by the morphologically-classified ellipticals. However, the faintest S0s exhibit very different behaviour, showing a wide range in colours, including a large fraction (30%) with relatively blue colours which appear to have younger luminosity-weighted ages for their stellar populations, 2-5Gyrs. We show that the proportion of these young S0s in the cluster population is consistent with the observed decrease in the S0 population seen in distant clusters when interpreted within the framework of a two-step spectroscopic and morphological transformation of accreted spiral field galaxies into cluster S0s.

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The method of smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) is developped appropriately for the study of relativistic heavy ion collision processes. In order to describe the flow of a high energy but low baryon number density fluid, the entropy is taken as the SPH base. We formulate the method in terms of the variational principle. Several examples show that the method is very promising for the study of hadronic flow in RHIC physics.

Homogeneity of Stellar Populations in Early-Type Galaxies with Different X-ray Properties

We have found the stellar populations of early-type galaxies are homogeneous with no significant difference in color or Mg2 index, despite the dichotomy between X-ray extended early-type galaxies and X-ray compact ones. Since the X-ray properties reflect the potential gravitational structure and hence the process of galaxy formation, the homogeneity of the stellar populations implies that the formation of stars in early-type galaxies predat es the epoch when the dichotomy of the potential structure was established.

Freeze-out in hydrodynamical models in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Freeze-out of particles across 3-dimensional space-time hypersurface with space-like normal is discussed in a simple kinetic model. The final momentum distribution of emitted particles shows a non-exponential transverse momentum spectrum, which is in quantitative agreement with recently measured SPS pion and $h^-$ spectra.

Large $p_t$ enhancement from freeze out

Freeze out of particles across three dimensional space-time hypersurface is discussed in a simple kinetic model. The final momentum distribution of emitted particles, for freeze out surfaces with space-like normal, shows a non-exponential transverse momentum spectrum. The slope parameter of the $p_t$ distribution increases with increasing $p_t$, in agreement with recently measured SPS pion and $h^-$ spectra.

Kinetic freeze out

Freeze out of particles across a space-time hypersurface is discussed in kinetic models. The calculation of final momentum distribution of emitted particles is described for freeze out surfaces, with spacelike normals. The resulting non-equilibrium distribution does not resemble, the previously proposed, cut Juttner distribution, and shows non-exponential p_t-spectra similar to the ones observed in experiments.

Freeze out in hydrodynamical models

We study the effects of strict conservation laws and the problem of negative contributions to final momentum distribution during the freeze out through 3-dimensional hypersurfaces with space-like normal. We study some suggested solutions for this problem, and demonstrate it on one example.

Variational Approach to Hydrodynamics - from QGP to General Relativity

We derive the special and general relativistic hydrodynamic equations of motion for ideal fluids from a variational principle. Our approach allows to find approximate solutions, whenever physically motivated trial functions can be used. Illustrating this, a Rayleigh-Plesset type equation for the relativistic motion of a spherical (QGP) droplet is obtained. Also the corresponding general relativistic effective Lagrangian for spherically symmetric systems is presented.

Sonoluminescing Gas Bubbles

We draw attention to the fact that the popular but unproven hypothesis of shock-driven sonoluminescence is incompatible with the reported synchronicity of the single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) phenomenon. Moreover, it is not a necessary requirement, since we show that the sub-shock dynamic heating in gas bubble cavitation can lead to conditions required to generate intense 100ps light pulses. To wit we study the dynamics of the interior of a cavitating gas bubble subject to conditions suitable for sonoluminescence. We explore quantitatively the transfer of energy from the sound wave to the bubble interior, the frequency of atomic collisions in the bubble, the limits of quasi-stability of the non-linear bubble oscillations driven by an acoustical field, and obtain the implied reaction time scales.

Evolution of the colour-magnitude relation of early-type galaxies in distant clusters

We present a thorough quantitative analysis of the evolution of the colour-magnitude relation for early-type galaxies in 17 distant clusters with redshifts 0.31 < z < 1.27 using the Kodama & Arimoto (1997) evolutionary model for elliptical galaxies. The model is calibrated to reproduce the colour- magnitude relation for Coma ellipticals at z ~ 0 and gives the evolution of the slope and zero-point as a function of redshift. We find no significant differences between the colour-magnitude relations of the clusters in our sample. The slopes can be reproduced by a single model sequence in which all elliptical galaxies are assumed to be equally old (the maximum age difference allowed for the brightest 3 magnitudes is only 1 Gyr) and to have mean stellar metallicities which vary as a function of galaxy luminosity. The zero-points of the colour-magnitude relations constrain the epoch of major star formation in early-type galaxies to z_f>2-4. This study provides two important constraints for any model of the formation of rich clusters: the uniformity of the ages of the stellar populations in the early-type galaxies and the universality of the metallicity sequence of these galaxies as a function of galaxy mass.

The Slope of the Cluster Elliptical Red Sequence: A Probe of Cluster Evolution

The current formation models for cluster elliptical galaxies which incorporate a mechanism for the metallicity enhancement of massive ellipticals predict a change in the observed slope of the red sequence of ellipticals as a function of redshift. This change occurs primarily because the metal-rich galaxies become redder faster than the metal-poorer galaxies with increasing age. This effect is most pronounced within ~ 4 Gyr of formation. Observations of the change of the slope of the red sequence with redshift may thus be used to constrain the formation epoch for galaxy clusters. We examine the red sequence of cluster ellipticals using publicly available HST imaging data for a set of six 0.75>z>0.2 clusters, and a sample of 44 Abell clusters at z<0.15 imaged with the KPNO 0.9 m. We compare the derived slopes of the red sequences with a set of cluster-elliptical evolution models and find good agreement. We demonstrate that such a comparison provides a useful constraint on the formation epoch for clusters, which can be made independently from considerations of absolute color evolution and scatter in the red sequence. From our initial comparison of the observed and model slopes as a function of redshift, we conclude, conservatively, that most of the elliptical galaxies in the cores of clusters must form at z>2.0, and that these galaxies are coeval and passively evolving.

The Sound of Sonoluminescence

We consider an air bubble in water under conditions of single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL) and evaluate the emitted sound field nonperturbatively for subsonic gas-liquid interface motion. Sound emission being the dominant damping mechanism, we also implement the nonperturbative sound damping in the Rayleigh-Plesset equation for the interface motion. We evaluate numerically the sound pulse emitted during bubble collapse and compare the nonperturbative and perturbative results, showing that the usual perturbative description leads to an overestimate of the maximal surface velocity and maximal sound pressure. The radius vs. time relation for a full SBSL cycle remains deceptively unaffected.
