Clustering of red Galaxies near the Radio-loud Quasar 1335.8+2834 at z=1.1

We have obtained new deep optical and near-infrared images of the field of the radio-loud quasar 1335.8+2834 at $z=1.086$ where an excess in the surface number density of galaxies was reported by Hutchings et al. [AJ, 106, 1324] from optical data. We found a significant clustering of objects with very red optical-near infrared colors, $4 \lesssim R-K \lesssim 6$ and $3 \lesssim I-K \lesssim 5$ near the quasar. The colors and magnitudes of the reddest objects are consistent with those of old (12 Gyr old at z=0) passively-evolving elliptical galaxies seen at $z=1.1$, clearly defining a `red envelope' like that found in galaxy clusters at similar or lower redshifts. This evidence strongly suggests that the quasar resides in a moderately-rich cluster of galaxies (richness-class $\geq 0$). There is also a relatively large fraction of objects with moderately red colors ($3.5 < R-K < 4.5$) which have a distribution on the sky similar to that of the reddest objects. They may be interpreted as cluster galaxies with some recent or on-going star formation.

Fluctuations in Hadronic and Nuclear Collisions

We investigate several fluctuation effects in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions through the analysis of different observables. To introduce fluctuations in the initial stage of collisions, we use the Interacting Gluon Model (IGM) modified by the inclusion of the impact parameter. The inelasticity and leading-particle distributions follow directly from this model. The fluctuation effects on rapidity distributions are then studied by using Landau's Hydrodynamic Model in one dimension. To investigate further the effects of the multiplicity fluctuation, we use the Longitudinal Phase-Space Model, with the multiplicity distribution calculated within the hydrodynamic model, and the initial conditions given by the IGM. Forward-backward correlation is obtained in this way.

HBT Interferometry for Sonoluminescence Bubble

The two-photon correlation of the light pulse emitted from a sonoluminescence bubble is discussed. It is shown that several important information about the mechanism of light emission, such as the time-scale and the shape of the emission region could be obtained from the HBT interferometry. We also argue that such a measurement may serve to reject one of the two currently suggested emission mechanisms, i.e., thermal process versus dynamical Casimir effect.

Charm Production in Flux Tubes

We argue that the non-perturbative Schwinger mechanism may play an important role in the hadronic production of charm. We present a flux tube model which assumes that the colliding hadrons become color charged because of gluon exchange, and that a single non-elementary flux tube is built up as they recede. The strong chromoelectric field inside this tube creates quark pairs (including charmed ones) and the ensuing color screening breaks the tube into excited hadronic clusters. On their turn these clusters, or `fireballs', decay statistically into the final hadrons. The model is able to account for the soft production of charmed, strange and lighter hadrons within a unified framework.
