First results from the search for an excess of $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ events in JSNS$^2$

The JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at the J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment at the Material and Life Science Facility (MLF) of J-PARC is designed to directly test an excess on $\bar{\nu}_{e}$ events which was indicated by LSND (Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector). The combination of a short-pulsed proton beam and a gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator provides an excellent signal-to-noise ratio. In this article, we report the first results of a direct test based on data collected in 2022. After applying all event selection criteria, two events are observed, consistent with the expected background of 2.3$\pm$0.4 events. No excess of $\bar{\nu}_e$ events are seen in this report, however the expected number of events due to LSND anomaly is 1.1$\pm$0.5, thus this result is not yet conclusive. Data taking has been ongoing since 2021 and will continue in future runs. In addition, a new far detector has recently been constructed for the second phase experiment, JSNS$^2$-II, marking an important milestone toward forthcoming measurements.

Aerogel RICH Counter at the Belle II Detector

We report on the design, operation, and performance of a novel proximity-focusing Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector equipped with a multilayer focusing aerogel radiator, developed for the forward region of the Belle II spectrometer at the SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. The system achieves effective separation of charged pions, kaons, and protons across the full kinematic range of the experiment, from 0.5 GeV/c to 4 GeV/c. To date, the detector has successfully operated in data-taking, contributing to the collection and analysis of nearly 600/fb of Belle II $e^+e^-$ collision data.

PMT calibration for the JSNS2-II far detector with an embedded LED system

The JSNS2-II (the second phase of JSNS2, J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment aimed at searching for sterile neutrinos. This experiment has entered its second phase, employing two liquid scintillator detectors located at near and far positions from the neutrino source. Recently, the far detector of the experiment has been completed and is currently in the calibration phase. This paper presents a detailed description of the calibration process utilizing the LED system. The LED system of the far detector uses two Ultra-Violet (UV) LEDs, which are effective in calibrating all of PMTs at once. The UV light is converted into the visible light wavelengths inside liquid scintillator via the wavelength shifters, providing pseudo-isotropic light. The properties of all functioning Photo-Multiplier-Tubes (PMTs) to detect the neutrino events in the far detector, such as gain, its dependence of supplied High Voltage (HV), and Peak-to-Valley (PV) were calibrated. To achieve a good energy resolution for physics events, up to 10% of the relative gain adjustment is required for all functioning PMTs. This will be achieved using the measured HV curves and the LED calibration. The Peak-to-Valley (PV) ratio values are the similar to those from the production company, which distinguish the single photo-electron signal from the pedestal. Additionally, the precision of PMT signal timing is measured to be 2.1 ns, meeting the event reconstruction requirement of 10 ns.

Muon tagging with Flash ADC waveform baselines

This manuscript describes an innovative method to tag the muons using the baseline information of the Flash ADC (FADC) waveform of PMTs in the JSNS1 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) experiment. This experiment is designed for the search for sterile neutrinos, and a muon tagging is an essential key component for the background rejection since the detector of the experiment is located over-ground, where is the 3rd floor of the J-PARC Material and Life experimental facility (MLF). Especially, stopping muons inside the detector create the Michel electrons, and they are important background to be rejected. Utilizing this innovative method, more than 99.8% of Michel electrons can be rejected even without a detector veto region. This technique can be employed for any experiments which uses the similar detector configurations.

The first JSNS$^2$ measurement of electron neutrino flux using $^{12}C(\nu_{e},e^{-}) ^{12}N_{g.s.}$ reaction

JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment searching for sterile neutrinos through the observation of $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} \rightarrow \bar{\nu}_e$ appearance oscillations, using neutrinos produced by muon decay-at-rest. A key aspect of the experiment involves accurately understanding the neutrino flux and the quantities of pions and muons, which are progenitors of (anti-)neutrinos, given that their production rates have yet to be measured. We present the first electron-neutrino flux measurement using $^{12}\mathrm{C}(\nu_{e},e^{-}) ^{12}\mathrm{N}_{g.s.}$ reaction in JSNS$^2$, yielding a flux of (6.7 $\pm$ 1.6 (stat.) $\pm$ 1.7 (syst.)) $\times$ 10$^{-9}$ cm$^{-2}$ proton$^{-1}$ at the JSNS$^2$ detector location, located at 24 meters distance from the mercury target. This flux measurement is consistent with predictions from simulations based on hadron models.

First Measurement of Missing Energy Due to Nuclear Effects in Monoenergetic Neutrino Charged Current Interactions

We present the first measurement of the missing energy due to nuclear effects in monoenergetic, muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon, originating from $K^+ \rightarrow \mu^+ \nu_\mu$ decay at rest ($E_{\nu_\mu}=235.5$ MeV), performed with the J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at the J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source liquid scintillator based experiment. Toward characterizing the neutrino interaction, ostensibly $\nu_\mu n \rightarrow \mu^- p$ or $\nu_\mu$$^{12}\mathrm{C}$ $\rightarrow \mu^-$$^{12}\mathrm{N}$, we define the missing energy as the energy transferred to the nucleus ($\omega$) minus the kinetic energy of the outgoing proton(s), $E_{m} \equiv\omega-\sum T_p$, and relate this to visible energy in the detector, $E_{m}=E_{\nu_\mu} (235.5 \mathrm{MeV})-m_\mu (105.7 \mathrm{MeV}) + [m_n-m_p (1.3 \mathrm{MeV})] - E_{\mathrm{vis}}$. The missing energy, which is naively expected to be zero in the absence of nuclear effects (e.g. nucleon separation energy, Fermi momenta, and final-state interactions), is uniquely sensitive to many aspects of the interaction, and has previously been inaccessible with neutrinos. The shape-only, differential cross section measurement reported, based on a $(77\pm3)$% pure double-coincidence kaon decay-at-rest signal (621 total events), provides detailed insight into neutrino-nucleus interactions, allowing even the nuclear orbital shell of the struck nucleon to be inferred. The measurement provides an important benchmark for models and event generators at hundreds of MeV neutrino energies, characterized by the difficult-to-model transition region between neutrino-nucleus and neutrino-nucleon scattering, and relevant for applications in nuclear physics, neutrino oscillation measurements, and Type-II supernova studies.

Evaluation of the performance of the event reconstruction algorithms in the JSNS$^2$ experiment using a $^{252}$Cf calibration source

JSNS$^2$ searches for short baseline neutrino oscillations with a baseline of 24~meters and a target of 17~tonnes of the Gd-loaded liquid scintillator. The correct algorithm on the event reconstruction of events, which determines the position and energy of neutrino interactions in the detector, are essential for the physics analysis of the data from the experiment. Therefore, the performance of the event reconstruction is carefully checked with calibrations using $^{252}$Cf source. This manuscript describes the methodology and the performance of the event reconstruction.

Angular analysis of $B \to K^* e^+ e^-$ in the low-$q^2$ region with new electron identification at Belle

We perform an angular analysis of the $B\to K^* e^+ e^-$ decay for the dielectron mass squared, $q^2$, range of $0.0008$ to $1.1200 ~\text{GeV}^2 /c^4$ using the full Belle data set in the $K^{*0} \to K^+ \pi^-$ and $K^{*+} \to K_S^0 \pi^+$ channels, incorporating new methods of electron identification to improve the statistical power of the data set. This analysis is sensitive to contributions from right-handed currents from physics beyond the Standard Model by constraining the Wilson coefficients $\mathcal{C}_7^{(\prime)}$. We perform a fit to the $B\to K^* e^+ e^-$ differential decay rate and measure the imaginary component of the transversality amplitude to be $A_T^{\rm Im} = -1.27 \pm 0.52 \pm 0.12$, and the $K^*$ transverse asymmetry to be $A_T^{(2)} = 0.52 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.11$, with $F_L$ and $A_T^{\rm Re}$ fixed to the Standard Model values. The resulting constraints on the value of $\mathcal{C}_7^{\prime}$ are consistent with the Standard Model within a $2\sigma$ confidence interval.

Pulse Shape Discrimination in JSNS$^2$

JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment that is searching for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} \rightarrow \bar{\nu}_e$ appearance oscillations using neutrinos with muon decay-at-rest. For this search, rejecting cosmic-ray-induced neutron events by Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) is essential because the JSNS$^2$ detector is located above ground, on the third floor of the building. We have achieved 95$\%$ rejection of neutron events while keeping 90$\%$ of signal, electron-like events using a data driven likelihood method.

Measurement of Angular Coefficients of $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \bar{\nu}_\ell$: Implications for $|V_{cb}|$ and Tests of Lepton Flavor Universality

We measure the complete set of angular coefficients $J_i$ for exclusive $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \bar{\nu}_\ell$ decays ($\ell = e, \mu$). Our analysis uses the full $711\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ Belle data set with hadronic tag-side reconstruction. The results allow us to extract the form factors describing the $B \to D^*$ transition and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{\rm cb}|$. Using recent lattice QCD calculations for the hadronic form factors, we find $|V_{\rm cb}| = (41.0 \pm 0.7) \times 10^3 $ using the BGL parameterization, compatible with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays. We search for lepton flavor universality violation as a function of the hadronic recoil parameter $w$, and investigate the differences of the electron and muon angular distributions. We find no deviation from Standard Model expectations.

Search for charged-lepton flavor violation in $\Upsilon(2S) \to \ell^\mp\tau^\pm$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) decays at Belle

We report a search for the charged-lepton flavor violation in $\Upsilon(2S) \to \ell^\mp\tau^\pm$ ($\ell=e,\mu$) decays using a $25~\fbi$ $\Upsilon(2S)$ sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^{+}$$e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We find no evidence for a signal and set upper limits on the branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) at 90\% confidence level. We obtain the most stringent upper limits: $\mathcal{B}(\Ytomutau) < 0.23 \times 10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\Ytoetau) < 1.12 \times 10^{-6}$.

The acrylic vessel for JSNS$^{2}$-II neutrino target

The JSNS$^{2}$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment designed for the search for sterile neutrinos. The experiment is currently at the stage of the second phase named JSNS$^{2}$-II with two detectors at near and far locations from the neutrino source. One of the key components of the experiment is an acrylic vessel, that is used for the target volume for the detection of the anti-neutrinos. The specifications, design, and measured properties of the acrylic vessel are described.

Observation of charmed strange meson pair production in $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays and in $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52~ \rm{GeV}$

We observe the process $\Upsilon(2S)\to D_s^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^{-}$ and continuum production $e^+e^- \to D_s^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^- $ at $\sqrt{s} = 10.52$ GeV (and their charge conjugates) using the data samples collected by the Belle detector at KEKB, where $D_{sJ}^-$ is $D_{s1}(2536)^-$ or $D^{*}_{s2}(2573)^-$. Both $D_{sJ}^-$ states are identified through their decay into $\bar{K}\bar{D}^{(*)}$. We measure the products of branching fractions ${\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S) \to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-) {\cal B}(D_{sJ}^-\to \bar{K} \bar{D}^{(*)})$ and the Born cross sections $\sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^- \to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-) {\cal B}(D_{sJ}^-\to \bar{K} \bar{D}^{(*)})$, and then compare the ratios $R_1 \equiv {\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+} D_{sJ}^-)/{\cal B}(\Upsilon(2S)\to\mu^{+}\mu^-)$ for $\Upsilon(2S)$ decays and $R_2 \equiv \sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-)/\sigma^{\rm Born}(e^+e^-\to \mu^{+}\mu^-)$ for continuum production. We obtain $R_1/R_2 = 9.7\pm 2.3 \pm 1.1$, $6.8 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.8$, $10.2 \pm 3.3 \pm 2.5$, and $3.4 \pm 2.1 \pm 0.5$ for the $D_s^+ D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^{*+} D_{s1}(2536)^-$, $D_s^+ D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$, and $D_s^{*+} D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^{-}$ final states in the $D_{sJ}^-\to K^{-} \bar{D}^{(*)0}$ modes, respectively. Therefore, the strong decay is expected to dominate in the $\Upsilon(2S)\to D_{s}^{(*)+}D_{sJ}^-$ processes. We also measure the ratios of branching fractions ${\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K_S^0 D^{*}(2010)^{-})/{\cal B}(D_{s1}(2536)^-\to K^{-} D^{*}(2007)^0) = 0.48 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.02$ and ${\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K_S^0 D^-)/{\cal B}(D_{s2}^{*}(2573)^- \to K^{-}D^0) = 0.49 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.02$, which are consistent with isospin symmetry. The second ratio is the first measurement of this quantity. Here, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic.

Study on the accidental background of the JSNS$^2$ experiment

JSNS$^2$ (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment which searches for sterile neutrinos via the observation of $\bar{\nu}_{\mu} \to \bar{\nu}_{e}$ appearance oscillations using muon decay-at-rest neutrinos. The data taking of JSNS$^2$ have been performed from 2021. In this manuscript, a study of the accidental background is presented. The rate of the accidental background is (9.29$\pm 0.39) \times 10^{-8}$ / spill with 0.75 MW beam power and comparable to the number of searching signals.

Evidence for $B^0 \to p\bar{\Sigma}^0\pi^-$ at Belle

We search for the $B^0\to p\bar{\Sigma}^0\pi^-$ decay with $\bar{\Sigma}^0 \to \bar{\Lambda}\gamma$, where the $\gamma$ is not measured, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 $\rm{fb^{-1}}$ which contains 772 $\times$ $10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs, collected around the $\Upsilon$(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure for the first time the $B^0\to p\bar{\Sigma}^0\pi^-$ branching fraction to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to p \bar\Sigma^0 \pi^-) = (1.17^{+0.43}_{-0.40}(\text{stat})\pm 0.07(\text{syst})) \times 10^{-6}$ with a significance of $3.0\sigma$. We simultaneously measure the branching fraction for the related channel $B^{0}\to p\bar{\Lambda}\pi^{-}$ with much improved precision.

Search for $CP$ violation in $D^{+}_{(s)}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}h^{+}h^{-}$ $(h=K,\pi)$ decays and observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}$

We search for $CP$ violation by measuring a $T$-odd asymmetry in the Cabibbo-suppressed $D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-} $ decay, and in the Cabibbo-favored $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ and $D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}$ decays. We use 980 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the Belle detector running at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The $C\!P$-violating $T$-odd parameter ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}$ is measured to be ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})=(0.34\pm0.87\pm0.32)\%,$ ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}(D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-})=(-0.46\pm0.63\pm0.38)\%,$ and ${a}^{T\text{-}\rm{odd}}_{CP}(D^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+})=(-3.34\pm2.66\pm0.35)\%,$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. We also report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}$. The branching fraction is measured relative to that of the analogous Cabibbo-favored decay : $B(D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}) / B(D^{+}_{s}\rightarrow K^{+}K^{0}_{S}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}) = (1.36\pm 0.15\pm 0.04)\%$.

First Simultaneous Determination of Inclusive and Exclusive $\left|V_{ub}\right|$

The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$ using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb${}^{-1}$. We analyze collision events in which one $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic $X_u$ system of the semileptonic $b \to u \ell \bar \nu_\ell$ decay. We separate exclusive $B \to \pi \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ decays from other inclusive $B \to X_u \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit, that utilizes the number of charged pions in the $X_u$ system and the four-momentum transfer $q^2$ between the $B$ and $X_u$ system. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the $B \to \pi \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ form factor, we determine $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| = (3.78 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = (3.88 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| / \left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = 0.97 \pm 0.12$ is compatible with unity.

Oxygen on-site Coulomb energy in Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ and its relation with Heisenberg exchange

We study the electronic structure of electron-doped Pr$_{1.3-x}$La$_{0.7}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO ; $T_{c}$ = 27 K, x = 0.1) and hole-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212 ; $T_{c}$ = 90 K) cuprate superconductors using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (Res-PES). From Res-PES across the O K-edge and Cu L-edge, we identify the O 2p and Cu 3d partial density of states (PDOS) and their correlation satellites which originate in two-hole Auger final states. Using the Cini-Sawatzky method, analysis of the experimental O 2p PDOS shows an oxygen on-site Coulomb energy for PLCCO to be $U_{p}$ = 3.3$\pm$0.5 eV and for Bi2212, $U_{p}$ = 5.6$\pm$0.5 eV, while the copper on-site Coulomb correlation energy, $U_{d}$ = 6.5$\pm$0.5 eV for Bi2212. The expression for the Heisenberg exchange interaction $J$ in terms of the electronic parameters $U_{d}$, $U_{p}$, charge-transfer energy $\Delta$ and Cu-O hopping $t_{pd}$ obtained from a simple Cu$_2$O cluster model is used to carry out an optimization analysis consistent with $J$ known from scattering experiments. The analysis also provides the effective one band on-site Coulomb correlation energy $\tilde{U}$ and the effective hopping $\tilde{t}$. PLCCO and Bi2212 are shown to exhibit very similar values of $\tilde{U}$/$\tilde{t}$ $\sim$9-10, confirming the strongly correlated nature of the singlet ground state in the effective one-band model for both the materials.
