Dephasing in the adiabatic rapid passage in quantum dots: the role of phonon-assisted biexciton generation

We study the evolution of an exciton confined in a quantum dot adiabatically controlled by a frequency-swept (chirped) laser pulse in the presence of carrier-phonon coupling. We focus on the dynamics induced by a linearly polarized beam and analyze the decoherence due to phonon-assisted biexciton generation. We show that if the biexciton state is shifted down by a few meV, as is typically the case, the resulting decoherence is strong even at low temperatures. As a result, efficient state preparation is restricted to a small parameter area corresponding to low temperatures, positive chirps and moderate pulse areas.

Decoherence-assisted initialization of a resident hole spin polarization in a two-dimensional hole gas

We investigate spin dynamics of resident holes in a p-modulation-doped GaAs/Al$_{0.3}$Ga$_{0.7}$As single quantum well. Time-resolved Faraday and Kerr rotation, as well as resonant spin amplification, are utilized in our study. We observe that nonresonant or high power optical pumping leads to a resident hole spin polarization with opposite sign with respect to the optically oriented carriers, while low power resonant optical pumping only leads to a resident hole spin polarization if a sufficient in-plane magnetic field is applied. The competition between two different processes of spin orientation strongly modifies the shape of resonant spin amplification traces. Calculations of the spin dynamics in the electron--hole system are in good agreement with the experimental Kerr rotation and resonant spin amplification traces and allow us to determine the hole spin polarization within the sample after optical orientation, as well as to extract quantitative information about spin dephasing processes at various stages of the evolution.

Electronic and thermal sequential transport in metallic and superconducting two-junction arrays

The description of transport phenomena in devices consisting of arrays of tunnel junctions, and the experimental confirmation of these predictions is one of the great successes of mesoscopic physics. The aim of this paper is to give a self-consistent review of sequential transport processes in such devices, based on the so-called "orthodox" model. We calculate numerically the current-voltage (I-V) curves, the conductance versus bias voltage (G-V) curves, and the associated thermal transport in symmetric and asymmetric two-junction arrays such as Coulomb-blockade thermometers (CBTs), superconducting-insulator-normal-insulator-superconducting (SINIS) structures, and superconducting single-electron transistors (SETs). We investigate the behavior of these systems at the singularity-matching bias points, the dependence of microrefrigeration effects on the charging energy of the island, and the effect of a finite superconducting gap on Coulomb-blockade thermometry.

Nonlinear optical response of hole-trion systems in quantum dots in tilted magnetic fields

We discuss, from a theoretical point of view, the four wave mixing spectroscopy on an ensemble of p-doped quantum dots in a magnetic field slightly tilted from the in-plane configuration. We describe the system evolution in the density matrix formalism. In the limit of coherent ultrafast optical driving, we obtain analytical formulas for the single system dynamics and for the response of an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble. The results are compared to the previously studied time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy on the same system. We show that the Kerr rotation and four wave mixing spectra yield complementary information on the spin dynamics (precession and damping).

Cooper-pair resonances and subgap Coulomb blockade in a superconducting single-electron transistor

We have fabricated and measured superconducting single-electron transistors with Al leads and Nb islands. At bias voltages below the gap of Nb we observe clear signatures of resonant tunneling of Cooper pairs, and of Coulomb blockade of the subgap currents due to linewidth broadening of the energy levels in the superconducting density of states of Nb. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Phonon-induced decoherence for a quantum dot spin qubit operated by Raman passage

We study single-qubit gates performed via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) on a spin qubit implemented in a quantum dot system in the presence of phonons. We analyze the interplay of various kinds of errors resulting from the carrier-phonon interaction as well as from quantum jumps related to nonadiabaticity and calculate the fidelity as a function of the pulse parameters. We give quantitative estimates for an InAs/GaAs system and identify the parameter values for which the error is considerably minimized, even to values below $10^{-4}$ per operation.

Reducing decoherence of the confined exciton state in a quantum dot by pulse-sequence control

We study the phonon-induced dephasing of the exciton state in a quantum dot excited by a sequence of ultra-short pulses. We show that the multiple-pulse control leads to a considerable improvement of the coherence of the optically excited state. For a fixed control time window, the optimized pulsed control often leads to a higher degree of coherence than the control by a smooth single Gaussian pulse. The reduction of dephasing is considerable already for 2-3 pulses.
