High-Pressure Electrical Resistivity Measurements of EuFe2As2 Single Crystals

High-pressure electrical resistivity measurements up to 3.0GPa have been performed on EuFe2As2 single crystals with residual resistivity ratios RRR=7 and 15. At ambient pressure, a magnetic / structural transition related to FeAs-layers is observed at T0 =190K and 194K for samples with RRR=7 and 15, respectively. Application of hydrostatic pressure suppresses T0, and then induces similar superconducting behavior in the samples with different RRR values. However, the critical pressure 2.7GPa, where T0=0, for the samples with RRR=15 is slightly but distinctly larger than 2.5GPa for the samples with RRR=7.

Observations of the Near-Infrared Spectrum of the Zodiacal Light with CIBER

Interplanetary dust (IPD) scatters solar radiation which results in the zodiacal light that dominates the celestial diffuse brightness at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Both asteroid collisions and cometary ejections produce the IPD, but the relative contribution from these two sources is still unknown. The Low Resolution Spectrometer (LRS) onboard the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) observed the astrophysical sky spectrum between 750 and 2100 nm over a wide range of ecliptic latitude. The resulting zodiacal light spectrum is redder than the solar spectrum, and shows a broad absorption feature, previously unreported, at approximately 900 nm, suggesting the existence of silicates in the IPD material. The spectral shape of the zodiacal light is isotropic at all ecliptic latitudes within the measurement error. The zodiacal light spectrum, including the extended wavelength range to 2500 nm using IRTS data, is qualitatively similar to the reflectance of S-type asteroids. This result can be explained by the proximity of S-type asteroidal dust to Earth's orbit, and the relativily high albedo of asteridal dust compared with cometary dust.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super $B$ factory, an asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider with a design luminosity of $8 \times 10^{35}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, which is around 50 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented.

C-axis critical current of a PrFeAsO0.7 single crystal

The c-axis transport properties of a high-pressure synthesized PrFeAsO0.7 single crystal are studied using s-shaped junctions. Resistivity anisotropy of about 120 detected at 50 K shows the presence of strong anisotropy in the electronic states. The obtained critical current density for the c-axis of 2.9*10^5 A/cm^2 is two orders of magnitude larger than that in Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+d. The appearance of a hysteresis in the current-voltage curve below T_c is the manifestation of the intrinsic Josephson effect similar to that in cuprate superconductors. The suppression of the critical current-normal resistance (I_cR_n) product is explained by an inspecular transport in s_pm-wave pair potential.

Spontaneous formation of a superconducting and antiferromagnetic hybrid state in SrFe2As2 under high pressure

We report a novel superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AF) hybrid state in SrFe2As2 revealed by 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on a single crystal under highly hydrostatic pressure up to 7 GPa. The NMR spectra at 5.4 GPa indicate simultaneous development of the SC and AF orders below 30 K. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the SC domains shows a substantial residual density of states, suggesting proximity effects due to spontaneous formation of a nano-scale SC/AF hybrid structure. This entangled behavior is a remarkable example of a self-organized heterogeneous structure in a clean system.

NMR and NQR study of pressure-induced superconductivity and the origin of critical-temperature enhancement in the spin-ladder cuprate Sr$_2$Ca$_{12}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Pressure-induced superconductivity was studied for a spin-ladder cuprate Sr$_2$Ca$_{12}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) under pressures up to the optimal pressure 3.8 GPa. Pressure application leads to a transitional change from a spin-gapped state to a Fermi-liquid state at temperatures higher than $T_c$. The relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows activated-type behavior at an onset pressure, whereas Korringa-like behavior becomes predominant at the optimal pressure, suggesting that an increase in the density of states (DOS) at the Fermi energy leads to enhancement of $T_c$. Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra suggest that pressure application causes transfer of holes from the chain to the ladder sites. The transfer of holes increases DOS below the optimal pressure. A dome-shaped $T_c$ versus pressure curve arises from naive balance between the transfer of holes and broadening of the band width.

Properties of nuclear and Coulomb breakup of 8B

The dependence of breakup cross sections of 8B at 65 MeV/nucleon on the target mass number A_T is investigated by means of the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) with more reliable distorting potentials than those in the preceding study. The A_T^(1/3) scaling law of the nuclear breakup cross section is found to be satisfied only in the middle A_T region of 40 < A_T < 150. The interference between nuclear and Coulomb breakup amplitudes vanishes in very forward angle scattering, independently of the target nucleus. The truncation of the relative energy between the p and 7Be fragments slightly reduces the contribution of nuclear breakup at very forward angles, while the angular region in which the first-order perturbation theory works well does not change essentially.

Switching Dynamics of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ Intrinsic Josephson junctions: Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling and Self-Heating Effect

The switching dynamics of current-biased Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) was studied to clarify the effect of d-wave superconductivity and the stack structure on the switching properties. High quality IJJs were fabricated, and then the temperature dependence of the switching probability distribution was measured for the first and second switchings. Although the standard deviation of the distribution detected for both switchings showed similar saturation characteristics with decreasing temperature, the temperature at saturation was about 13 times higher for the second switching than for the first switching. The properties of the first switching can be explained in terms of a conventional underdamped JJ, that is, macroscopic quantum tunneling below the crossover temperature, and thermal activation with quality factor of 70$\pm$20 above the crossover temperature. In contrast, the relatively higher effective temperature for the second switching evaluated from the switching probability distribution suggests a dominant thermal activation process under the influence of the self-heating effect even at sufficiently low temperature.

Magneto-transport properties governed by the antiferromagnetic fluctuations in heavy fermion superconductor CeIrIn$_{5}$

In quasi-two dimensional Ce(Ir,Rh)In$_5$ system, it has been suggested that the phase diagram contains two distinct domes with different heavy fermion superconducting states. We here report the systematic pressure dependence of the electron transport properties in the normal state of CeRh$_{0.2}$Ir$_{0.8}$In$_{5}$ and CeIrIn$_{5}$, which locates in first and second superconducting dome, respectively. We observed non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperatures in both compounds, including non-quadratic $T-$dependence of the resistivity, large enhancement of the Hall coefficient, and the violation of the Kohler's rule in the magnetoresistance. We show that the cotangent of Hall angle $\cot Θ_H$ varies as $T^2$, and the magnetoresistance is quite well scaled by the Hall angle as $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2Θ_H$. The observed transport anomalies are common features of Ce$M$In$_{5}$ ($M$=Co, Rh, and Ir) and high-$T_c$ cuprates, suggesting that the anomalous transport properties observed in CeIrIn$_{5}$ are mainly governed by the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, not by the Ce-valence fluctuations which has been proposed to be the possible origin for the second superconducting dome.

Possible observation of energy level quantization in an intrinsic Josephson junction

Energy level quantization (ELQ) is studied to clarify the macroscopic quantum dynamics of the d-wave Josephson junction (JJ). The influences of the nodal quasiparticles of d-wave superconductivity on the damping effect are numerically evaluated on the basis of a phenomenological model. The calculation, based on realistic parameters for a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) intrinsic JJ, shows that the observation of ELQ is possible when the sweep rate of the bias current exceeds 10 A/sec. High-sweep- rate measurements (121A/sec) performed on a Bi2212 intrinsic JJ result in the appearance of multiple peaks in the switching current distribution suggesting the realization of ELQ in the d-wave JJ.

Modeling with structure of resins in electonic compornents

In recent years, interfacial fracture becomes one of the most important problems in the assessment of reliability of electronics packaging. Especially, underfill resin is used with solder joints in flip chip packaging for preventing the thermal fatigue fracture in solder joints. In general, the interfacial strength has been evaluated on the basis of interfacial fracture mechanics concept. However, as the size of devices decrease, it is difficult to evaluate the interfacial strength quantitatively. Most of researches in the interfacial fracture were conducted on the basis of the assumption of the perfectly bonding condition though the interface has the micro-scale structure and the bonding is often imperfect. In this study, the mechanical model of the interfacial structure of resin in electronic components was proposed. Bimaterial model with the imperfect bonding condition was examined by using a finite element analysis (FEA). Stress field in the vicinity of interface depends on the interfacial structure with the imperfect bonding. In the front of interfacial crack tip, the behavior of process zone is affected by interfacial structure. However, the instability of fracture for macroscopic crack which means the fracture toughness is governed by the stress intensity factor based on the fracture mechanics concept.

Complex-space singularities of 2D Euler flow in Lagrangian coordinates

We show that, for two-dimensional space-periodic incompressible flow, the solution can be evaluated numerically in Lagrangian coordinates with the same accuracy achieved in standard Eulerian spectral methods. This allows the determination of complex-space Lagrangian singularities. Lagrangian singularities are found to be closer to the real domain than Eulerian singularities and seem to correspond to fluid particles which escape to (complex) infinity by the current time. Various mathematical conjectures regarding Eulerian/Lagrangian singularities are presented.

The Infrared Astronomical Mission AKARI

AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. These will become an additional future heritage of this mission.

Compensation of the Crossing Angle with Crab Cavities at KEKB

Crab cavities have been installed in the KEKB B--Factory rings to compensate the crossing angle at the collision point and thus increase luminosity. The beam operation with crab crossing has been done since February 2007. This is the first experience with such cavities in colliders or storage rings. The crab cavities have been working without serious issues. While higher specific luminosity than the geometrical gain has been achieved, further study is necessary and under way to reach the prediction of simulation.

The Infrared Camera (IRC) for AKARI - Design and Imaging Performance

The Infrared Camera (IRC) is one of two focal-plane instruments on the AKARI satellite. It is designed for wide-field deep imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy in the near- to mid-infrared (1.8--26.5um) in the pointed observation mode of AKARI. IRC is also operated in the survey mode to make an all-sky survey at 9 and 18um. It comprises three channels. The NIR channel (1.8--5.5um) employs a 512 x 412 InSb array, whereas both the MIR-S (4.6--13.4um) and MIR-L (12.6--26.5um) channels use 256 x 256 Si:As impurity band conduction arrays. Each of the three channels has a field-of-view of about 10' x 10' and are operated simultaneously. The NIR and MIR-S share the same field-of-view by virtue of a beam splitter. The MIR-L observes the sky about $25' away from the NIR/MIR-S field-of-view. IRC gives us deep insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies, the evolution of planetary disks, the process of star-formation, the properties of interstellar matter under various physical conditions, and the nature and evolution of solar system objects. The in-flight performance of IRC has been confirmed to be in agreement with the pre-flight expectation. This paper summarizes the design and the in-flight operation and imaging performance of IRC.

Multi-wavelength analysis of 18um-selected galaxies in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole

We present an initial analysis of AKARI 18um-selected galaxies using all 9 photometric bands at 2-24um available in the InfraRed Camera (IRC), in order to demonstrate new capabilities of AKARI cosmological surveys. We detected 72 sources at 18um in an area of 50.2 arcmin^2 in the AKARI/IRC monitor field towards the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP). From this sample, 25 galaxies with probable redshifts z>~ 0.5 are selected with a single colour cut (N2-N3>0.1) for a detailed SED analysis with ground-based BVRi'z'JK data. Using an SED radiative transfer model of starbursts covering the wavelength range UV -- submm, we derive photometric redshifts from the optical-MIR SEDs of 18um-selected galaxies. From the best-fit SED models, we show that the IRC all-band photometry is capable of tracing the steep rise in flux at the blue side of the PAH 6.2um emission feature. This indicates that the IRC all-band photometry is useful to constrain the redshift of infrared galaxies, specifically for dusty galaxies with a less prominent 4000A break. Also, we find that the flux dip between the PAH 7.7 and 11.2um emission feature is recognizable in the observed SEDs of galaxies at z~1. By using such a colour anomaly due to the PAH and silicate absorption features, unique samples of ULIRGs at z~1, `silicate-break' galaxies, can be constructed from large cosmological surveys of AKARI towards the NEP, i.e. the NEP-Deep and NEP-Wide survey. This pilot study suggests the possibility of detecting many interesting galaxy properties in the NEP-Deep and Wide surveys, such as a systematic difference in SEDs between high- and low-z ULIRGs, and a large variation of the PAH inter-band strength ratio in galaxies at high redshifts. On-site underground background measurements for the KASKA reactor-neutrino experiment

On-site underground background measurements were performed for the planned reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment KASKA at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station in Niigata, Japan. A small-diameter boring hole was excavated down to 70m underground level, and a detector unit for $γ$-ray and cosmic-muon measurements was placed at various depths to take data. The data were analyzed to obtain abundance of natural radioactive elements in the surrounding soil and rates of cosmic muons that penetrate the overburden. The results will be reflected in the design of the KASKA experiment.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in the magnetotransport of CeMIn5 (M: Co and Rh): Striking similarity between quasi 2D heavy fermion and high-Tc cuprates

We present a systematic study of the dc-resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance in the normal state of quasi 2D heavy fermion superconductors CeMIn5 (M: Rh and Co) under pressure. Here the electronic system evolves with pressure from an antiferromagnetic (AF) metal, through a highly unconventional non-Fermi liquid, and finally into a Fermi-liquid state. The amplitude of the Hall coefficient increases dramatically with decreasing T, reaching at low temperatures a value significantly larger than 1/ne. Furthermore, the magnetoresistance is characterized by T- and H-dependence which clearly violate Kohler's rule. We found that the Hall angle cotΘvaries as T^2, and the magnetoresistance is well scaled by the Hall angle as Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\propto \tan^2Θ. These non-Fermi liquid properties in the electron transport are remarkably pronounced when the AF fluctuations are enhanced in the vicinity of the QCP. We lay particular emphasis on the striking resemblance of these anomalous magnetotransport with those of the high-Tc cuprates. We argue that features commonly observed in quasi 2D heavy fermion and cuprates very likely capture universal features of strongly correlated electron systems.
