Letter of Intent for KASKA: High Accuracy Neutrino Oscillation Measurements with anti-nu_es from Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station

One of the current most-demanded experiments in neutrino physics is to measure the last mixing angle theta_13. KASKA is an experiment to detect new type of reactor neutrino oscillation and to measure sin^2 2theta_13 accurately using the world's most powerful nuclear reactor complex; Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station. KASKA utilizes near and far detectors of identical structure at nearly optimized baselines and underground depths to cancel most of the systematics and reduce backgrounds. The expected sensitivity is sin^2 2theta_13~0.015, which is 10 times better sensitivity than the current upper limit measured by CHOOZ reactor experiment. Extension of KASKA project has potential to accurately measure other anti-nu_e oscillation parameters. Intense and precisely known neutrino flux measured by the KASKA-theta_13 phase can be used to pin down sin^2 2theta_12 at a baseline ~50km and to measure Dm^2_13 for the first time at a baseline ~5km. This Letter of Intent describes physics motivation, detector system and expected performance of the KASKA experiment.

Nature of complex singularities for the 2D Euler equation

A detailed study of complex-space singularities of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equation is performed in the short-time asymptotic régime when such singularities are very far from the real domain; this allows an exact recursive determination of arbitrarily many spatial Fourier coefficients. Using high-precision arithmetic we find that the Fourier coefficients of the stream function are given over more than two decades of wavenumbers by $\hat F(\k) = C(θ) k^{-α} \ue ^ {-k δ(θ)}$, where $\k = k(\cos θ, \sin θ)$. The prefactor exponent $α$, typically between 5/2 and 8/3, is determined with an accuracy better than 0.01. It depends on the initial condition but not on $θ$. The vorticity diverges as $s^{-β}$, where $α+β= 7/2$ and $s$ is the distance to the (complex) singular manifold. This new type of non-universal singularity is permitted by the strong reduction of nonlinearity (depletion) which is associated to incompressibility. Spectral calculations show that the scaling reported above persists well beyond the time of validity of the short-time asymptotics. A simple model in which the vorticity is treated as a passive scalar is shown analytically to have universal singularities with exponent $α=5/2$.

Evolution of Hall coefficient in two-dimensional heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$

We report on the pressure dependence of the Hall coefficient $R_H$ in quasi-2D heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$. At ambient pressure, below a temperature associated with the emergence of non-Fermi liquid properties, $R_H$ is anomalously enhanced. We found that the restoration of the Fermi liquid state with applied pressure leads to a gradual suppression of this dramatic enhancement. Moreover, the enhancement in $R_H$ was found to be confined to an intermediate temperature window, where inelastic electron-electron scattering is dominant. Our results strongly support the presence of cold and hot spots on the Fermi surface probably due to anisotropic scattering by antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which may also prove relevant for the debate on the anomalous normal-state properties of high-$T_c$ cuprates.

Coulomb breakup effects on the elastic cross section of $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering near Coulomb barrier energies

We accurately analyze the $^6$He+$^{209}$Bi scattering at 19 and 22.5 MeV near the Coulomb barrier energy, using the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method (CDCC) based on the $n$+$n$+$^4$He+$^{209}$Bi four-body model. The three-body breakup continuum of $^6$He is discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of $^6$He in a space spanned by the Gaussian basis functions. The calculated elastic and total reaction cross sections are in good agreement with the experimental data, while the CDCC calculation based on the di-neutron model of $^6$He, i.e., the $^2n$+$^{4}$He+$^{209}$Bi three-body model, does not reproduce the data.

Measurement of the branching fractions for B- --> D(*)+ pi- l- nu-bar and B0bar --> D(*)0 pi+ l- nu-bar

We report on a measurement of the branching fractions for B- --> D(*)+ pi- l- nu-bar and B0bar --> D(*)0 pi+ l- nu-bar with 275 million BBbar events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB. Events are tagged by fully reconstructing one of the B mesons in hadronic modes. We obtain Br(B- --> D+ pi- l- nu-bar) = (0.54 +/- 0.07(stat) +/- 0.07(syst) +/- 0.06(BR)) x 10^-2, Br(B- --> D*+ pi- l- nu-bar) = (0.67 +/- 0.11(stat) +/- 0.09(syst) +/- 0.03(BR)) x 10^-2, Br(B0bar --> D0 pi+ l- nu-bar) = (0.33 +/- 0.06(stat) +/- 0.06(syst) +/- 0.03(BR)) x 10^-2, Br(B0bar --> D*0 pi+ l- nu-bar) = (0.65 +/- 0.12(stat) +/- 0.08(syst) +/- 0.05(BR)) x 10^-2, where the third error comes from the error on Bbar --> D(*) l- nu-bar decays. Contributions from B0bar --> D*+ l- nu-bar decays are excluded in the measurement of B0bar --> D0 pi+ l- nu-bar.

Continuum-discretized coupled-channels method for four-body breakup reactions

Development of the method of CDCC (Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels) from the level of three-body CDCC to that of four-body CDCC is reviewed. Introduction of the pseudo-state method based on the Gaussian expansion method for discretizing the continuum states of two-body and three-body projectiles plays an essential role in the development. Furthermore, introduction of the complex-range Gaussian basis functions is important to improve the CDCC for nuclear breakup so as to accomplish that for Coulomb and nuclear breakup. A successful application of the four-body CDCC to $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV is reported.

The analytic structure of 2D Euler flow at short times

Using a very high precision spectral calculation applied to the incompressible and inviscid flow with initial condition $ψ_0(x_1, x_2) = \cos x_1+\cos 2x_2$, we find that the width $δ(t)$ of its analyticity strip follows a $\ln(1/t)$ law at short times over eight decades. The asymptotic equation governing the structure of spatial complex-space singularities at short times (Frisch, Matsumoto and Bec 2003, J.Stat.Phys. 113, 761--781) is solved by a high-precision expansion method. Strong numerical evidence is obtained that singularities have infinite vorticity and lie on a complex manifold which is constructed explicitly as an envelope of analyticity disks.

A novel type of proximity focusing RICH counter with multiple refractive index aerogel radiator

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector, with the radiator consisting of two or more aerogel layers of different refractive indices, has been tested in 1-4 GeV/c pion beams at KEK. Essentially, a multiple refractive index aerogel radiator allows for an increase in Cherenkov photon yield on account of the increase in overall radiator thickness, while avoiding the simultaneous degradation in single photon angular resolution associated with the increased uncertainty of the emission point. With the refractive index of consecutive layers suitably increasing in the downstream direction, one may achieve overlapping of the Cherenkov rings from a single charged particle. In the opposite case of decreasing refractive index, one may obtain well separated rings. In the former combination an approximately 40% increase in photon yield is accompanied with just a minor degradation in single photon angular resolution. The impact of this improvement on the pion/kaon separation at the upgraded Belle detector is discussed.

IRTS observation of the near-infrared extragalactic background light

We searched for near-infrared extragalactic background light (EBL) in the data from the Near-InfraRed Spectrometer (NIRS) on the Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS). After subtracting the contribution of faint stars and the zodiacal component based on modeling, a significant isotropic emission is obtained in the wavelength bands from 1.4 micron to 4.0 micron. The in-band flux amounts to ~ 35 nW m-2 sr-1 which is too bright to be explained by the integrated light from faint galaxies. Significant fluctuations in sky brightness were also detected which can not be explained by fluctuations due to faint stars, zodiacal components and normal galaxies. The excess fluctuation amounts to ~ 1/4 of the excess emission over the integrated light of galaxies. A two-point correlation analysis shows that IRTS/NIRS data has an angular scale of fluctuations of a few degrees. Recent WMAP results of CMB polarization indicate that the reionization of the Universe occurred at z ~ 17 or earlier. The observed near infrared background light could be redshifted UV light from the first generation of massive stars (Pop.III stars) which caused the reionization of the Universe. The spectral jump around 1 micron over the optical EBL suggests that massive star formation terminated at z~9. The observed fluctuations, however, are considerably larger than the theoretical predictions and require a new scenario for the Pop.III era.

Continuum-discretized coupled-channels method for four-body nuclear breakup in $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering

We propose a fully quantum-mechanical method of treating four-body nuclear breakup processes in scattering of a projectile consisting of three constituents, by extending the continuum-discretized coupled-channels method. The three-body continuum states of the projectile are discretized by diagonalizing the internal Hamiltonian of the projectile with the Gaussian basis functions. For $^6$He+$^{12}$C scattering at 18 and 229.8 MeV, the validity of the method is tested by convergence of the elastic and breakup cross sections with respect to increasing the number of the basis functions. Effects of the four-body breakup and the Borromean structure of $^6$He on the elastic and total reaction cross sections are discussed.

Physics at Super B Factory

This report presents the results of studies that investigate the physics reach at a Super B factory, an asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider with a design luminosity of 5 x 10^35 cm^-2s^-1, which is around 40 times as large as the peak luminosity achieved by the KEKB collider. The studies focus on flavor physics and CP violation measurements that could be carried out in the LHC era. The physics motivation, key observables, measurement methods and expected precisions are presented. The sensitivity studies are a part of the activities associated with the preparation of a Letter of Intent for SuperKEKB, which has been submitted recently.

Lagrangian singularities of steady two-dimensional flow

The Lagrangian complex-space singularities of the steady Eulerian flow with stream function $\sin x_1 \cos x_2$ are studied by numerical and analytical methods. The Lagrangian singular manifold is analytic. Its minimum distance from the real domain decreases logarithmically at short times and exponentially at large times.

Gaussian expansion approach to Coulomb breakup

An accurate treatment of Coulomb breakup reactions is presented by using both the Gaussian expansion method and the method of continuum discretized coupled channels. As $L^2$-type basis functions for describing bound- and continuum-states of a projectile, we take complex-range Gaussian functions, which form in good approximation a complete set in a large configuration space being important for Coulomb-breakup processes. Accuracy of the method is tested quantitatively for $^{8}{\rm B}+^{58}$Ni scattering at 25.8 MeV.

Multifractality of the Feigenbaum attractor and fractional derivatives

It is shown that fractional derivatives of the (integrated) invariant measure of the Feigenbaum map at the onset of chaos have power-law tails in their cumulative distributions, whose exponents can be related to the spectrum of singularities $f(α)$. This is a new way of characterizing multifractality in dynamical systems, so far applied only to multifractal random functions (Frisch and Matsumoto (J. Stat. Phys. 108:1181, 2002)). The relation between the thermodynamic approach (Vul, Sinai and Khanin (Russian Math. Surveys 39:1, 1984)) and that based on singularities of the invariant measures is also examined. The theory for fractional derivatives is developed from a heuristic point view and tested by very accurate simulations.

Optical study of the metal-insulator transition in CuIr$_2$S$_4$ crystals

We present measurements of the optical spectra on single crystals of spinel-type compound \cis. This material undergoes a sharp metal-insulator transition at 230 K. Upon entering the insulating state, the optical conductivity shows an abrupt spectral weight transfer and an optical excitation gap opens. In the metallic phase, Drude components in low frequencies and an interband transition peak at $\sim 2 eV$ are observed. In the insulating phase, a new peak emerges around $0.5 eV$. This peak is attributed to the transition of electrons from the occupied Ir$^{3+}$ $t_{2g}$ state to upper Ir$^{4+}$ $t_{2g}$ subband resulting from the dimerization of Ir$^{4+}$ ions in association with the simultaneous formations of Ir$^{3+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ octamers as recently revealed by the x-ray diffraction experiment. Our experiments indicate that the band structure is reconstructed in the insulating phase due to the sudden structural transition.

First Star Signature in Infrared Background Anisotropies

(Abridged) Recent cosmic microwave background anisotropy results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe suggest that the universe was reionized at a redshift around 20. Such an early reionization could arise through the ionizing radiation emitted by metal-free population III stars at redshifts of 10 and higher. We discuss infrared background (IRB) surface brightness spatial fluctuations from such a generation of early star formation. We show that the spatial clustering of these stars at tens of arcminute scales generates a contribution to the angular power spectrum of the IRB anisotropies at the same angular scales. This excess can be potentially detected when resolved foreground galaxies out to a redshift of a few is removed from the clustering analysis. Additionally, assuming a population III stellar spectrum, we suggest that the clustering excess related to the first generation of stars can be separated from brightness fluctuations resulting from other foreground sources and galaxies using multifrequency observations in the wavelength range of ~ 1 to 5 microns. In addition to removing the low-redshift galaxy population, the multifrequency data are essential to account for certain foreground contaminants such zodiacal light, which, if varying spatially over degree scales, can be a significant source of confusion for the proposed study. Using various instruments, we study the extent to which spatial fluctuations of the IRB can be studied in the near future.

Studies of Proximity Focusing RICH with an aerogel radiator using Flat-panel multi-anode PMTs (Hamamatsu H8500)

A proximity focusing ring imaging Cherenkov detector using aerogel as the radiator has been studied for an upgrade of the Belle detector at the KEK-B-factory. We constructed a prototype Cherenkov counter using a 4 x 4 array of 64-channel flat-panel multi-anode PMTs (Hamamatsu H8500) with a large effective area. The aerogel samples were made with a new technique to obtain a higher transmission length at a high refractive index (n=1.05). Multi-channel PMTs are read-out with analog memory chips. The detector was tested at the KEK-PS pi2 beam line in November, 2002. To evaluate systematically the performance of the detector, tests were carried out with various aerogel samples using pion beams with momenta between 0.5 GeV/c and 4 GeV/c. The typical angular resolution was around 14 mrad, and the average number of detected photoelectrons was around 6. We expect that pions and kaons can be separated at a 4 sigma level at 4 GeV/c.

Determination of S17 from Systematic Analysis of 8B Coulomb Dissociation

Systematic analysis of 8B Coulomb dissociation with the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient (ANC) method is proposed to determine the astrophysical factor S17 accurately. An important advantage of the analysis is that uncertainties of the extracted S17 coming from the use of the ANC method can quantitatively be evaluated, in contrast to previous analyses using the Virtual Photon Theory (VPT). Calculation of measured spectra in dissociation experiments is done by means of the method of Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC). From the analysis of 58Ni(8B,7Be+p)58Ni at 25.8 MeV, S17=22.83 +/- 0.51(theo) +/- 2.28(expt) (eVb) is obtained; the ANC method turned out to work in this case within 1% of error. Preceding systematic analysis of experimental data at intermediate energies, we propose hybrid (HY) Coupled-Channels (CC) calculation of 8B Coulomb dissociation, which makes numerical calculation much simple, retaining its accuracy. The validity of the HY calculation is tested for 58Ni(8B,7Be+p)58Ni at 240 MeV. The ANC method combined with the HY CC calculation is shown to be a powerful technique to obtain a reliable S17.
