1D Modeling for Temperature-Dependent Upflow in the Dimming Region Observed by Hinode/EIS

We have previously found a temperature-dependent upflow in the dimming region following a coronal mass ejection (CME) observed by the {\it Hinode} EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS). In this paper, we reanalyzed the observations along with previous work on this event, and provided boundary conditions for modeling. We found that the intensity in the dimming region dramatically drops within 30 minutes from the flare onset, and the dimming region reaches the equilibrium stage after $\sim$1 hour later. The temperature-dependent upflows were observed during the equilibrium stage by EIS. The cross sectional area of the fluxtube in the dimming region does not appear to expand significantly. From the observational constraints, we reconstructed the temperature-dependent upflow by using a new method which considers the mass and momentum conservation law, and demonstrated the height variation of plasma conditions in the dimming region. We found that a super radial expansion of the cross sectional area is required to satisfy the mass conservation and momentum equations. There is a steep temperature and velocity gradient of around 7 Mm from the solar surface. This result may suggest that the strong heating occurred above 7 Mm from the solar surface in the dimming region. We also showed that the ionization equilibrium assumption in the dimming region is violated especially in the higher temperature range.

Clustering effects for explaining an anomalous JLab result on the Be-9 structure function

An anomalous nuclear modification was reported by JLab measurements on the beryllium-9 structure function F_2. It is unexpected in the sense that a nuclear modification slope is too large to be expected from its average nuclear density. We investigated whether it is explained by a nuclear clustering configuration in Be-9 with two αnuclei and surrounding neutron clouds. Such clustering aspects are studied by using antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) and also by a simple shell model for comparison. We consider that nuclear structure functions F_2^A consist of a mean conventional part and a remaining one depending on the maximum local density. The first mean part does not show a significant cluster effect on F_2. However, we propose that the remaining one could explain the anonymous JLab slope, and it is associated with high densities created by the cluster formation in Be-9. The JLab measurement is possibly the first signature of clustering effects in high-energy nuclear reactions. A responsible physics could be an internal nucleon modification, which is caused by the high densities due to the cluster configuration.

Molecular spin-orbit excitations in the J_eff = 1/2 frustrated spinel GeCo$_2$O$_4$

We describe powder and single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a spinel-type antiferromagnet GeCo$_2$O$_4$, represented by an effective total angular momentum J_eff = 1/2. Several types of non-dispersive short-range magnetic excitations were discovered. The scattering intensity maps in $\vec{Q}$ space are well reproduced by dynamical structure factor analyses using molecular model Hamiltonians. The results of analyses strongly suggest that the molecular excitations below T_N arise from a hidden molecular-singlet ground state, in which ferromagnetic subunits are antiferromagnetically coupled. The quasielastic excitations above T_N are interpreted as its precursor. A combination of frustration and J_eff = 1/2 might induce these quantum phenomena.

Clustering aspects in nuclear structure functions

For understanding an anomalous nuclear effect experimentally observed for the beryllium-9 nucleus at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab), clustering aspects are studied in structure functions of deep inelastic lepton-nucleus scattering by using momentum distributions calculated in antisymmetrized (or fermionic) molecular dynamics (AMD) and also in a simple shell model for comparison. According to the AMD, the Be-9 nucleus consists of two alpha-like clusters with a surrounding neutron. The clustering produces high-momentum components in nuclear wave functions, which affects nuclear modifications of the structure functions. We investigated whether clustering features could appear in the structure function F_2 of Be-9 along with studies for other light nuclei. We found that nuclear modifications of F_2 are similar in both AMD and shell models within our simple convolution description although there are slight differences in Be-9. It indicates that the anomalous Be-9 result should be explained by a different mechanism from the nuclear binding and Fermi motion. If nuclear-modification slopes d(F_2^A/F_2^D)/dx are shown by the maximum local densities, the Be-9 anomaly can be explained by the AMD picture, namely by the clustering structure, whereas it certainly cannot be described in the simple shell model. This fact suggests that the large nuclear modification in Be-9 should be explained by large densities in the clusters. For example, internal nucleon structure could be modified in the high-density clusters. The clustering aspect of nuclear structure functions is an unexplored topic which is interesting for future investigations.

Generation of Dicke states using adiabatic passage

Entangled states of two ions are realized by using an adiabatic process. Based on the proposal by Linington and Vitanov, we have generated Dicke states in optical qubits of two $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions by applying frequency-chirped optical pulses with time-dependent envelopes to perform rapid adiabatic passage on sideband transitions. One of the biggest advantages of adiabatic approaches is their robustness against variations in experimental parameters, which is verified by performing experiments for different pulse widths or peak Rabi frequencies. Fidelities exceeding 0.5, which is the threshold for inseparable states, are obtained over wide ranges of parameter values.

Pressure study of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2

We investigated pressure effects on transition temperature (Tc) of the new iron-based superconductor K0.8Fe2Se2 using a BeCu/NiCrAl hybrid-type clamped piston-cylinder cell. The Tc(onset) was 33K at 0.85 GPa. With increasing pressure, Tc(onset) gradually increased and reached 36.6 K at 2.03 GPa.

Enhanced quasiparticle heat conduction of the multigap superconductor Lu2Fe3Si5

The thermal transport measurements have been made on the Fe-based superconductor Lu2Fe3Si5 (Tc ~ 6 K) down to a very low temperature Tc/120. The field and temperature dependences of the thermal conductivity confirm the multigap superconductivity with fully opened gaps on the whole Fermi surfaces. In comparison to MgB2 as a typical example of the multigap superconductor in a p-electron system, Lu2Fe3Si5 reveals a remarkably enhanced quasiparticle heat conduction in the mixed state. The results can be interpreted as a consequence of the electronic correlations derived from Fe 3d-electrons.

Modelling of EIS spectrum drift from instrumental temperatures

An empirical model has been developed to reproduce the drift of the spectrum recorded by EIS on board Hinode using instrumental temperatures and relative motion of the spacecraft. The EIS spectrum shows an artificial drift in wavelength dimension in sync with the revolution of the spacecraft, which is caused by temperature variations inside the spectrometer. The drift amounts to 70 km s$^{-1}$ in Doppler velocity and introduces difficulties in velocity measurements. An artificial neural network is incorporated to establish a relationship between the instrumental temperatures and the spectral drift. This empirical model reproduces observed spectrum shift with an rms error of 4.4 km s$^{-1}$. This procedure is robust and applicable to any spectrum obtained with EIS, regardless of of the observing field. In addition, spectral curvatures and spatial offset in the North - South direction are determined to compensate for instrumental effects.

Field cooling memory effect in Bi2212 and Bi2223 single crystals

A memory effect in the Josephson vortex system created by magnetic field in the highly anisotropic superconductors Bi2212 and Bi2223 is demonstrated using microwave power absorption. This surprising effect appears despite a very low viscosity of Josephson vortices compared to Abrikosov vortices. The superconductor is field cooled in DC magnetic field H_{m} oriented parallel to the CuO planes through the critical temperature T_{c} down to 4K, with subsequent reduction of the field to zero and again above H_{m}. Large microwave power absorption signal is observed at a magnetic field just above the cooling field clearly indicating a memory effect. The dependence of the signal on deviation of magnetic field from H_{m} is the same for a wide range of H_{m} from 0.15T to 1.7T.

Disorder-sensitive superconductivity in the iron silicide Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ studied by the Lu-site substitutions

We studied effect of non-magnetic and magnetic impurities on superconductivity in Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$ by small amount substitution of the Lu site, which investigated structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of non-magnetic (Lu$_{1-x}$Sc$_x$)$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$, (Lu$_{1-x}$Y$_x$)$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$, and magnetic (Lu$_{1-x}$Dy$_x$)$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$. The rapid depression of $T_c$ by non-magnetic impurities in accordance with the increase of residual resistivity reveals the strong pair breaking dominated by disorder. We provide compelling evidence for the sign reversal of the superconducting order parameter in Lu$_2$Fe$_3$Si$_5$.

Cosmic Ray Tests of the Prototype TPC for the ILC Experiment

A time projection chamber (TPC) is a strong candidate for the central tracker of the international linear collider (ILC) experiment and we have been conducting a series of cosmic ray experiments under a magnetic field up to 4 T, using a small prototype TPC with a replaceable readout device: multi-wire proportional chamber (MWPC) or gas electron multiplier (GEM). We first confirmed that the MWPC readout could not be a fall-back option of the ILC-TPC under a strong axial magnetic field of 4 T since its spatial resolution suffered severely from the so called E x B effect in the vicinity of the wire planes. The GEM readout, on the other hand, was found to be virtually free from the E x B effect as had been expected and gave the resolution determined by the transverse diffusion of the drift electrons (diffusion limited). Furthermore, GEMs allow a wider choice of gas mixtures than MWPCs. Among the gases we tried so far a mixture of Ar-CF4-isobutane, in which MWPCs could be prone to discharges, seems promising as the operating gas of the ILC-TPC because of its small diffusion constant especially under a strong magnetic field. We report the measured drift properties of this mixture including the diffusion constant as a function of the electric field and compare them with the predictions of Magboltz. Also presented is the spatial resolution of a GEM-based ILC-TPC estimated from the measurement with the prototype.

Relation between Superconducting Gap Minima and Nesting Vector in YNi2B2C

We have performed ultrahigh-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe the large superconducting (SC) gap anisotropy (GA) of YNi2B2C. The result shows large SC GA with a smooth variation along an intersection of a Fermi surface (FS) around the $Γ$-Z line and nearly isotropic SC gap values for two intersections of FSs around the X-P line but with a point-like non-zero minimum only for one sheet. The point-like SC gap minimum can be connected by the nesting vector reported from band calculations. The results show unexpectedly complicated SC GA of borocarbide superconductors.

Growth of superconducting single-crystalline (Lu, Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-d whiskers

Single-crystalline (Lu, Ca)Ba2Cu3O7-d (Lu(Ca)123) whiskers have been successfully grown using the Te-doping method. X-ray diffraction patterns of Lu(Ca)123 whiskers showed sharp (0 0 l) peaks corresponding to REBa2Cu3O7-d phase (RE = rare earth elements). Transport measurements showed that the superconducting transition occurred at 83 K in the obtained whiskers.

Electrical properties of boron-doped MWNTs synthesized by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition

We have synthesized a large amount of boron-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. The synthesis was carried out in a flask using a methanol solution of boric acid as a source material. The scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy were performed to evaluate the structural properties of the obtained MWNTs. In order to evaluate the electrical properties, temperature dependence of resistivity was measured in an individual MWNTs with four metal electrodes. The Ramman shifts suggest carrier injection into the boron-doped MWNTs, but the resistivity of the MWNTs was high and increased strongly with decreasing temperature. Defects induced by the plasma may cause this enhanced resistivity.

High precision density measurements in the solar corona: I. Analysis methods and results for Fe XII and Fe XIII

The EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) instrument on board the Hinode satellite has access to some of the best coronal density diagnostics and the high sensitivity of the instrument now allows electron number density, N_e, measurements to an unprecedented precision of up to +/-5 % in active regions. This paper gives a thorough overview of data analysis issues for the best diagnostics of Fe XII and Fe XIII and assesses the accuracy of the measurements. Two density diagnostics each from Fe XII (186.88/195.12 and 196.64/195.12) and Fe XIII (196.54/202.04 and 203.82/202.04) are analysed in two active region data-sets from 2007 May 3 and 6 that yield densities in the range 8.5 < log N_e < 11.0. The densities are derived using v5.2 of the CHIANTI atomic database. The Fe XII and Fe XIII diagnostics show broadly the same trend in density across the active region, consistent with their similar temperatures of formation. However the high precision of the EIS measurements demonstrates significant discrepancies of up to 0.5 dex in derived log N_e values, with Fe XII always giving higher densities than Fe XIII. The discrepancies may partly be due to real physical differences between the emitting regions of the two plasmas, but the dominant factor lies in the atomic models of the two ions. Two specific problems are identified for Fe XII 196.64 and Fe XIII 203.82: the former is found to be under-estimated in strength by the CHIANTI atomic model, while the high density limit of the 203.82/202.04 is suggested to be inaccurate in the CHIANTI atomic model. The small grating tilt of the EIS instrument is found to be very significant when deriving densities from emission lines separated by more than a few angstroms.

A new molecular dynamics calculation and its application to the spectra of light and strange baryons

A new approach based on antisymmetrized molecular dynamics is proposed to correctly take account of the many-body correlation. We applied it to the spectra of low-lying, light and strange baryons. The inclusion of the quark-quark correlation is vital to predict the precise spectra, and the semi-relativistic kinematics is also important to correct the level ordering. The baryon spectra calculated by the present method is as precise as the Faddeev calculation.

Bulk electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic superconducting phase in ErNi2B2C

We have performed temperature (T) - dependent laser-photoemission spectroscopy of antiferromagnetic (AF) superconductor ErNi2B2C to study the electronic-structure evolution reflecting the interplay between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. The spectra at the superconducting (SC) phase show a very broad spectral shape. T-dependent SC gap shows a sudden deviation from the BCS prediction just below TN. This observation can be well explained by the theoretical model and thus represents characteristic bulk electronic structure of the AF SC phase for the first time.

Photoproduction of neutral kaons on the liquid deuterium target in the threshold region

The photoproduction process of neutral kaons on a liquid deuterium target is investigated near the threshold region, Egamma = 0.8-1.1 GeV. K0 events are reconstructed from positive and negative pions, and differential cross sections are derived. Experimental momentum spectra are compared with those calculated in the spectator model using a realistic deuteron wave function. Elementary amplitudes as given by recent isobar models and a simple phenomenological model are used to study the effect of the new data on the angular behavior of the elementary cross section. The data favor a backward-peaked angular distribution of the elementary n(gamma,K0)Lambda process, which provides additional constraints on current models of kaon photoproduction. The present study demonstrates that the n(gamma,K0)Lambda reaction can provide key information on the mechanism of the photoproduction of strangeness.
