Near Infrared Polarization Images of the Orion Nebula

Wide-field (~8' x 8') and deep near-infrared (JHKs bands) polarization images of the Orion nebulae (IRNe) around young stellar objects (YSOs), both massive and low-mass. We found the IRNe around both IRc2 and BN to be very extensive, suggesting that there might be two extended (>0.7 pc) bipolar/monopolar IRNe in these sources. We discovered at least 13 smaller-scale (~0.01-0.1 pc) IRNe around less-massive YSOs including the famous source theta^2 Ori C. We also suggest the presence of many unresolved (<690 AU) systems around low-mass YSOs and young brown dwarfs showing possible intrinsic polarizations. Wide-field infrared polarimetry is thus demonstrated to be a powerful technique in revealing IRNe and hence potential disk/outflow systems among high-mass to substellar YSOs.

Cosmogenic Neutrinos from the propagation of Ultra High Energy Nuclei

We calculate the flux of neutrinos generated by the propagation of ultra-high energy nuclei over cosmological distances. The propagation takes into account the interactions with cosmic background radiations including the CMB and the most recent estimates of higher energy (infra-red, optical, and ultra violet) backgrounds. We assume that the composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at the source is the same as the observed one at low energies. This assumption fits well the present data at the highest energies. We compare the cosmogenic neutrino flux from mixed composition sources to pure proton sources. We find that the neutrino flux in the mixed composition case has a high energy peak, mainly due to photopion production off CMB photons, of similar shape and amplitude to the proton case. At low energies both composition cases have significant neutrino flux with a peak around 1014.5 eV due to the higher energy backgrounds. The mixed composition case induces a higher flux of neutrinos at energies below 1013 eV due to the neutron decay component that extends down to low energies. Detection of diffuse neutrino fluxes at ultra high energies can strongly constrain the source distribution of UHECR whereas fluxes at lower energies could be used to constrain confinement of VHE and UHE cosmic rays if combined with composition analysis from cosmic ray experiments.

Parity effect in superconducting aluminum single electron transistors with spatial gap profile controlled by film thickness

We propose a novel method for suppression of quasiparticle poisoning in Al Coulomb blockade devices. The method is based on creation of a proper energy gap profile along the device. In contrast to the previously used techniques, the energy gap is controlled by the film thickness. Our transport measurements confirm that the quasiparticle poisoning is suppressed and clear 2$e$ periodicity is observed only when the island is made much thinner than the leads. This result is consistent with the existing model and provides a simple method to suppress quasiparticle poisoning.

Evidence for Carrier-Induced High-Tc Ferromagnetism in Mn-doped GaN film

A GaN film doped with 8.2 % Mn was grown by the molecular-beam-epitaxy technique. Magnetization measurements show that this highly Mn-doped GaN film exhibits ferromagnetism above room temperature. It is also revealed that the high-temperature ferromagnetic state is significantly suppressed below 10 K, accompanied by an increase of the electrical resistivity with decreasing temperature. This observation clearly demonstrates a close relation between the ferromagnetism with extremely high-Tc and the carrier transport in the Mn-doped GaN film.

Josephson lattice structure in mesoscopic intrinsic Josephson junctions by means of flux-flow resistance in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

Dynamical nature of the Josephson vortex (JV) system in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi2212) has been investigated in the presence of the c-axis current with magnetic field alignments very close to the $ab$-plane. As a function of magnetic fields, the c-axis JV flux flow resistance oscillates periodically in accordance with the proposed JV triangular structure. We observe that this oscillating period becomes doubled above a certain field, indicating the structure transition from triangle to square structure. This transition field becomes lower in junctions with smaller width perpendicular to the external field. We interpret that this phenomena as the effect of the edge deformation of the JV lattice due to surface current of intrinsic Josephson junctions as pointed by Koshelev.

Temperature square dependence of the low frequency 1/f charge noise in the Josephson junction qubits

To verify the hypothesis about the common origin of the low frequency 1/f noise and the quantum f noise recently measured in the Josephson charge qubits, we study temperature dependence of the 1/f noise and decay of coherent oscillations. T^2 dependence of the 1/f noise is experimentally demonstrated, which supports the hypothesis. We also show that dephasing in the Josephson charge qubits off the electrostatic energy degeneracy point is consistently explained by the same low frequency 1/f noise that is observed in the transport measurements.

The First Scientific Results from the Pierre Auger Observatory

The southern site of the Pierre Auger Observatory is under the construction near Malargue in Argentina and now more than 60% of the detectors are completed. The observatory has been collecting data for over 1 year and the cumulative exposure is already similar to that of the largest forerunner experiments. The hybrid technique provides model-independent energy measurements from the Fluorescence Detector to calibrate the Surface Detector. Based on this technique, the first estimation of the energy spectrum above 3 EeV has been presented and is discussed in this paper.

The trigger system of the Pierre Auger Surface Detector: operation, efficiency and stability

The trigger system of the Surface Detector (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory is described, from the identification of candidate showers ($E>1$ EeV) at the level of a single station, among a huge background (mainly single muons), up to the selection of real events and the rejection of random coincidences at a higher central trigger level (including the reconstruction accuracy). Efficiency of a single station trigger is evaluated using real data , and the high performance of event selection hierarchy will be demonstrated.

Faithful qubit distribution assisted by one additional qubit against collective noise

We propose a distribution scheme of polarization states of a single photon over collective-noise channel. By adding one extra photon with a fixed polarization, we can protect the state against collective noise via a parity-check measurement and post-selection. While the scheme succeeds only probabilistically, it is simpler and more flexible than the schemes utilizing decoherence-free subspace. An application to BB84 protocol through collective noise channel, which is robust to the Trojan horse attack, is also given.

Quantum noise in the Josephson charge qubit

We study decoherence of the Josephson charge qubit by measuring energy relaxation and dephasing with help of the single-shot readout. We found that the dominant energy relaxation process is a spontaneous emission induced by quantum noise coupled to the charge degree of freedom. Spectral density of the noise at high frequencies is roughly proportional to the qubit excitation energy.

Cosmogenic Neutrinos from Ultra-High Energy Nuclei

We calculate the flux of neutrinos generated by the propagation of ultra-high energy iron over cosmological distances and show that even if ultra-high energy cosmic rays are composed of heavy nuclei, a significant flux of high-energy neutrinos should be present throughout the universe. The resulting neutrino flux has a new peak at $\sim 10^{14} eV$ generated by neutron decay and reproduces the double peak structure due to photopion production at higher energies ($\sim 10^{18}$ eV). Depending on the maximum energy and cosmological evolution of extremely high energy cosmic accelerators the generated neutrino flux can be detected by future experiments.

Doping Dependent Changes in Nitrogen 2$p$ States in the Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N

We study the electronic structure of the recently discovered diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N ($x$ = 0.01-0.10). A systematic study of the changes in the $occupied$ and $unoccupied$ ligand (N) partial density of states (DOS) of the host lattice is carried out using N 1$s$ soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy, respectively. X-ray absorption measurements confirm the wurtzite N 2$p$ DOS and substitutional doping of Cr into Ga-sites. Coupled changes in the $occupied$ and $unoccupied$ N 2$p$ character DOS of Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N identify states responsible for ferromagnetism consistent with band structure calculations.

Single-shot measurement of the Josephson charge qubit

We demonstrate single-shot readout of quantum states of the Josephson charge qubit. The quantum bits are transformed into and stored as classical bits (charge quanta) in a dynamic memory cell - a superconducting island. The transformation of state |1> (differing form state |0> by an extra Cooper pair) is a result of a controllable quasiparticle tunneling to the island. The charge is then detected by a conventional single-electron transistor, electrostatically decoupled from the qubit. We study relaxation dynamics in the system and obtain the readout efficiency of 87% and 93% for |1> and |0> states, respectively.

Demonstration of conditional gate operation using superconducting charge qubits

Since the first demonstration of coherent control of a quantum state of a superconducting charge qubit a variety of Josephson-junction-based qubits have been implemented with remarkable progress in coherence time and read-out schemes. Although the current level of this solid-state device is still not as advanced as that of the most advanced microscopic-system-based qubits, these developments, together with the potential scalability, have renewed its position as a strong candidate as a building block for the quantum computer. Recently, coherent oscillation and microwave spectroscopy in capacitively-coupled superconducting qubits have been reported. The next challenging step toward quantum computation is a realization of logic gates. Here we demonstrate a conditional gate operation using a pair of coupled superconducting charge qubits. Using a pulse technique, we prepare different input states and show that they can be transformed by controlled-NOT (C-NOT) gate operation in the amplitude of the states. Although the phase evolution during the gate operation is still to be clarified, the present results are a major step toward the realization of a universal solid-state quantum gate.

Signal Fluctuations in the Auger Surface Detector

We measured the Cerenkov signal fluctuations in the water tanks of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Two stations located near the center of the 32-tank Engineering Array separated by 11 m were used for the purpose. At this separation the stations sample nearly the same region of the air shower. Sources of the signal fluctuations are discussed.

Quantum oscillations in two coupled charge qubits

Despite an apparent progress in implementing individual solid-state qubits, there have been no experimental reports so far on multi-bit gates required for building a real quantum computer. Here we report a new circuit comprising two coupled charge qubits. Using a pulse technique, we coherently mix quantum states and observe quantum oscillations whose spectrum reflects interaction between the qubits. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of coupling of multiple solid-state qubits and indicate the existence of entangled two-qubit states.

Energy determination in the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array experiment

Using data from more than ten-years of observations with the Akeno Giant Air Shower Array (AGASA), we published a result that the energy spectrum of ultra-high energy cosmic rays extends beyond the cutoff energy predicted by Greisen, and Zatsepin and Kuzmin. In this paper, we reevaluate the energy determination method used for AGASA events with respect to the lateral distribution of shower particles, their attenuation with zenith angle, shower front structure, delayed particles observed far from the core and other factors. The currently assigned energies of AGASA events have an accuracy of $\pm$25% in event-reconstruction resolution and $\pm$18% in systematic errors around 10$^{20}$eV. This systematic uncertainty is independent of primary energy above 10$^{19}$eV. Based on the energy spectrum from 10$^{14.5}$eV to a few times 10$^{20}$eV determined at Akeno, there are surely events above 10$^{20}$eV and the energy spectrum extends up to a few times 10$^{20}$eV without a GZK-cutoff.

Development of Atmospheric Monitoring System at Akeno Observatory for the Telescope Array Project

We have developed an atmospheric monitoring system for the Telescope Array experiment at Akeno Observatory. It consists of a Nd:YAG laser with an alt-azimuth shooting system and a small light receiver. This system is installed inside an air conditioned weather-proof dome. All parts, including the dome, laser, shooter, receiver, and optical devices are fully controlled by a personal computer utilizing the Linux operating system. It is now operated as a back-scattering LIDAR System. For the Telescope Array experiment, to estimate energy reliably and to obtain the correct shower development profile, the light transmittance in the atmosphere needs to be calibrated with high accuracy. Based on observational results using this monitoring system, we consider this LIDAR to be a very powerful technique for Telescope Array experiments. The details of this system and its atmospheric monitoring technique will be discussed.
