Chemical potential jump between hole- and electron-doped sides of ambipolar high-Tc cuprate

In order to study an intrinsic chemical potential jump between the hole- and electron-doped high-Tc superconductors, we have performed core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) measurements of Y0.38La0.62Ba1.74La0.26Cu3Oy (YLBLCO), into which one can dope both holes and electrons with maintaining the same crystal structure. Unlike the case between the hole-doped system La_2-xSrxCuO4 and the electron-doped system Nd_2-xCexCuO4, we have estimated the true chemical potential jump between the hole- and electron-doped YLBLCO to be ~0.8 eV, which is much smaller than the optical gaps of 1.4-1.7 eV reported for the parent insulating compounds. We attribute the reduced jump to the indirect nature of the charge-excitation gap as well as to the polaronic nature of the doped carriers.

Resonant Spin-Flavor Conversion of Supernova Neutrinos: Dependence on Electron Mole Fraction

Detailed dependence of resonant spin-flavor (RSF) conversion of supernova neutrinos on electron mole fraction Ye is investigated. Supernova explosion forms a hot-bubble and neutrino-driven wind region of which electron mole fraction exceeds 0.5 in several seconds after the core collapse. When a higher resonance of the RSF conversion is located in the innermost region, flavor change of the neutrinos strongly depends on the sign of 1-2Ye. At an adiabatic high RSF resonance the flavor conversion of bar{nu}_e -> nu_{mu,tau} occurs in Ye < 0.5 and normal mass hierarchy or in Ye > 0.5 and inverted mass hierarchy. In other cases of Ye values and mass hierarchies, the conversion of nu_e -> bar{nu}_{mu,tau} occurs. The final bar{nu}_e spectrum is evaluated in the cases of Ye < 0.5 and Ye > 0.5 taking account of the RSF conversion. Based on the obtained result, time variation of the event number ratios of low bar{nu}_e energy to high bar{nu}_e energy is discussed. In normal mass hierarchy, an enhancement of the event ratio should be seen in the period when the electron fraction in the innermost region exceeds 0.5. In inverted mass hierarchy, on the other hand, a dip of the event ratio should be observed. Therefore, the time variation of the event number ratio is useful to investigate the effect of the RSF conversion.

Search for VHE gamma rays from SS433/W50 with the CANGAROO-II telescope

SS433, located at the center of the supernova remnant W50, is a close proximity binary system consisting of a compact star and a normal star. Jets of material are directed outwards from the vicinity of the compact star symmetrically to the east and west. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission is detected from lobes lying on both sides. Shock accelerated electrons are expected to generate sub-TeV gamma rays through the inverse-Compton process in the lobes. Observations of the western X-ray lobe region of SS433/W50 system have been performed to detect sub-TeV gamma-rays using the 10m CANGAROO-II telescope in August and September, 2001, and July and September, 2002. The total observation times are 85.2 hours for ON source, and 80.8 hours for OFF source data. No significant excess of sub-TeV gamma rays has been found at 3 regions of the western X-ray lobe of SS433/W50 system. We have derived 99% confidence level upper limits to the fluxes of gamma rays and have set constraints on the strengths of the magnetic fields assuming the synchrotron/inverse-Compton model for the wide energy range of photon spectrum from radio to TeV. The derived lower limits are 4.3 microgauss for the center of the brightest X-ray emission region and 6.3 microgauss for the far end from SS433 in the western X-ray lobe. In addition, we suggest that the spot-like X-ray emission may provide a major contribution to the hardest X-ray spectrum in the lobe.

CANGAROO-III search for TeV Gamma-rays from two clusters of galaxies

Because accretion and merger shocks in clusters of galaxies may accelerate particles to high energies, clusters are candidate sites for the origin of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic-rays. A prediction was presented for gamma-ray emission from a cluster of galaxies at a detectable level with the current generation of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The gamma-ray emission was produced via inverse Compton upscattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by electron-positron pairs generated by collisions of UHE cosmic rays in the cluster. We observed two clusters of galaxies, Abell 3667 and Abell 4038, searching for very-high-energy gamma-ray emission with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system in 2006. The analysis showed no significant excess around these clusters, yielding upper limits on the gamma-ray emission. From a comparison of the upper limit for the north-west radio relic region of Abell 3667 with a model prediction, we derive a lower limit for the magnetic field of the region of ~0.1 micro G. This shows the potential of gamma-ray observations in studies of the cluster environment. We also discuss the flux upper limit from cluster center regions using a model of gamma-ray emission from neutral pions produced in hadronic collisions of cosmic-ray protons with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The derived upper limit of the cosmic-ray energy density within this framework is an order of magnitude higher than that of our Galaxy.

Reanalysis of Data Taken by the CANGAROO 3.8 Meter Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope: PSR B1706-44, SN 1006, and Vela

We have reanalyzed data from observations of PSR B1706-44, SN 1006, and the Vela pulsar region made with the CANGAROO 3.8 m imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope between 1993 and 1998 in response to the results reported for these sources by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. In our reanalysis, in which gamma-ray selection criteria have been determined exclusively using gamma-ray simulations and OFF-source data as background samples, no significant TeV gamma-ray signals have been detected from compact regions around PSR B1706-44 or within the northeast rim of SN 1006. We discuss reasons why the original analyses gave the source detections. The reanalysis did result in a TeV gamma-ray signal from the Vela pulsar region at the 4.5 sigma level using 1993, 1994, and 1995 data. The excess was located at the same position, 0.13 deg. to the southeast of the Vela pulsar, as that reported in the original analysis. We have investigated the effect of the acceptance distribution in the field of view of the 3.8 m telescope, which rapidly decreases toward the edge of the field of the camera, on the detected gamma-ray morphology. The expected excess distribution for the 3.8 m telescope has been obtained by reweighting the distribution of HESS J0835-455 measured by H.E.S.S. with the acceptance of the 3.8 m telescope. The result is morphologically comparable to the CANGAROO excess distribution, although the profile of the acceptance-reweighted H.E.S.S. distribution is more diffuse than that of CANGAROO. The integral gamma-ray flux from HESS J0835-455 has been estimated for the same region as defined by H.E.S.S. from the 1993-1995 data of CANGAROO to be F(> 4.0 +/- 1.6 TeV) = (3.28 +/- 0.92) x 10^{-12} photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}, which is statistically consistent with the integral flux obtained by H.E.S.S.

CANGAROO-III Observation of TeV Gamma Rays from the vicinity of PSR B1 706-44

Observation by the CANGAROO-III stereoscopic system of the Imaging Cherenkov Telescope has detected extended emission of TeV gamma rays in the vicinity of the pulsar PSR B1706$-$44. The strength of the signal observed as gamma-ray-like events varies when we apply different ways of emulating background events. The reason for such uncertainties is argued in relevance to gamma-rays embedded in the "off-source data", that is, unknown sources and diffuse emission in the Galactic plane, namely, the existence of a complex structure of TeV gamma-ray emission around PSR B1706$-$44.

Enhanced superconducting gaps in the tri-layer high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$

We have investigated the optimally doped tri-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{10+δ}$ (Bi2223) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and observed energy bands and Fermi surfaces originated from the outer and inner CuO$_2$ planes (OP and IP) separately. The OP band is overdoped (hole density $\sim$ 0.26/Cu) with a large d-wave gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 43 meV while the IP is underdoped ($\sim$ 0.06/Cu) with an even large gap of $Δ_0$ $\sim$ 60 meV. We propose that the enhancement of the $Δ_0$ of IP is due to the minimal influence of out-of-plane disorder and that the OP gap is then enhanced through interlayer coupling, most likely a proximity effect from the IP.

Coherent quasi-particles-to-incoherent hole-carriers crossover in underdoped cuprates

In underdoped cuprates, only a portion of the Fermi surface survives as Fermi arcs due to pseudogap opening. In hole-doped La$_{2}$CuO$_4$, we have deduced the "coherence temperature" $T_{coh}$ of quasi-particles on the Fermi arc above which the broadened leading edge position in angle-integrated photoemission spectra is shifted away from the Fermi level and the quasi-particle concept starts to lose its meaning. $T_{coh}$ is found to rapidly increase with hole doping, an opposite behavior to the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. The superconducting dome is thus located below both $T^*$ and $T_{coh}$, indicating that the superconductivity emerges out of the coherent Fermionic quasi-particles on the Fermi arc. $T_{coh}$ remains small in the underdoped region, indicating that incoherent charge carriers originating from the Fermi arc are responsible for the apparently metallic transport at high temperatures.

Effects of out-of-plane disorder on the nodal quasiparticle and superconducting gap in single-layer Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}Ln_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($Ln$ = La, Nd, Gd)

How out-of-plane disorder affects the electronic structure has been investigated for the single-layer cuprates Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$$Ln$$_{0.4}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ ($Ln$ = La, Nd, Gd) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We have observed that, with increasing disorder, while the Fermi surface shape and band dispersions are not affected, the quasi-particle width increases, the anti-nodal gap is enhanced and the superconducting gap in the nodal region is depressed. The results indicate that the superconductivity is significantly depressed by out-of-plane disorder through the enhancement of the anti-nodal gap and the depression of the superconducting gap in the nodal region.

Underlying Fermi surface of Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ in two-dimensional momentum space observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the two-leg ladder system Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ with $x$= 0 and 11. "Underlying Fermi surfaces" determined from low energy spectral weight mapping indicates the quasi-one dimensional nature of the electronic structure. Energy gap caused by the charge density wave has been observed for $x$=0 and the gap tends to close with Ca substitution. The absence of a quasi-particle peak even in $x$=11 is in contrast to the two-dimensional high-$T_c$ cuprates, implying strong carrier localization related to the hole crystalization.

Differences in the high-energy kink between hole- and electron-doped high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ (NCCO) in order to elucidate the origin of the high-energy kink (HEK) observed in the high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors (HTSCs). The energy scale of the HEK in NCCO is large compared with that in hole-doped HTSCs, consistent with previous ARPES studies. From measurement in a wide momentum region, we have demonstrated that between the hole- and electron-doped HTSCs the energy position of the HEK is shifted approximately by the amount of the chemical potential difference. Also, we have found that around $(π, 0)$ the HEK nearly coincides with the band bottom while around the node the band reaches the incoherent region and the HEK appears at the boundary between the coherent and incoherent regions.

Universal versus Material-Dependent Two-Gap Behaviors in the High-Tc Cuprates: Angle-Resolved Photoemission Study of La2-xSrxCuO4

We have investigated the doping and temperature dependences of the pseudogap/superconducting gap in the single-layer cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The results clearly exhibit two distinct energy and temperature scales, namely, the gap around ($π$,0) of magnitude $Δ^*$ and the gap around the node characterized by the d-wave order parameter $Δ_0$, like the double-layer cuprate Bi2212. In comparison with Bi2212 having higher $T_c$'s, $Δ_0$ is smaller, while $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are similar. This result suggests that $Δ^*$ and $T^*$ are approximately material-independent properties of a single CuO$_2$ plane, in contrast the material-dependent $Δ_0$, representing the pairing strength.

Systematic tight-binding analysis of ARPES spectra of transition-metal oxides

We have performed systematic tight-binding (TB) analyses of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra of transition-metal (TM) oxides A$M$O$_3$ ($M=$ Ti, V, Mn, and Fe) with the perovskite-type structure and compared the obtained parameters with those obtained from configuration-interaction (CI) cluster-model analyses of photoemission spectra. The values of $ε_d-ε_p$ from ARPES are found to be similar to the charge-transfer energy $Δ$ from O $2p$ orbitals to empty TM 3d orbitals and much larger than $Δ-U/2$ ($U$: on-site Coulomb energy) expected for Mott-Hubbard-type compounds including SrVO$_3$. $ε_d-ε_p$ values from {\it ab initio} band-structure calculations show similar behaviors to those from ARPES. The values of the $p-d$ transfer integrals to describe the global electronic structure are found to be similar in all the estimates, whereas additional narrowing beyond the TB description occurs in the ARPES spectra of the $d$ band.

Measurement of cosmic-ray low-energy antiproton spectrum with the first BESS-Polar Antarctic flight

The BESS-Polar spectrometer had its first successful balloon flight over Antarctica in December 2004. During the 8.5-day long-duration flight, almost 0.9 billion events were recorded and 1,520 antiprotons were detected in the energy range 0.1-4.2 GeV. In this paper, we report the antiproton spectrum obtained, discuss the origin of cosmic-ray antiprotons, and use antiprotons to probe the effect of charge sign dependent drift in the solar modulation.

Appearance of Universal Metallic Dispersion in a Doped Mott Insulator

We have investigated the dispersion renormalization $Z_{disp}$ in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) over the wide doping range of $x=0.03-0.30$, for binding energies extending to several hundred meV's. Strong correlation effects conspire in such a way that the system exhibits an LDA-like dispersion which essentially `undresses' ($Z_{disp}\to 1$) as the Mott insulator is approached. Our finding that the Mott insulator contains `nascent' or `preformed' metallic states with a vanishing spectral weight offers a challenge to existing theoretical scenarios for cuprates.

Neutrino-Nucleus Reaction Cross Sections for Light Element Synthesis in Supernova Explosions

The neutrino-nucleus reaction cross sections of 4He and 12C are evaluated using new shell model Hamiltonians. Branching ratios of various decay channels are calculated to evaluate the yields of Li, Be, and B produced through the nu-process in supernova explosions. The new cross sections enhance the yields of 7Li and 11B produced during the supernova explosion of a 16.2 M_odot star model compared to the case using the conventional cross sections by about 10%. On the other hand, the yield of 10B decreases by a factor of two. The yields of 6Li, 9Be, and the radioactive nucleus 10Be are found at a level of 10^{-11} M_odot. The temperature of nu_{mu,tau}- and bar{nu}_{mu,tau}-neutrinos inferred from the supernova contribution of 11B in Galactic chemical evolution models is constrained to the 4.3-6.5 MeV range. The increase in the 7Li and 11B yields due to neutrino oscillations is demonstrated with the new cross sections.

Bulk-like d band of SrVO3 under a self-protective cap layer

We have performed a detailed angel-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of in-situ prepared SrVO3 thin films. Naturally capped by a ``transparent'' protective layer, contributions from surface states centered at ~ -1.5 eV are dramatically reduced, enabling us to study the bulk V 3d states. We have observed a clear band dispersion not only in the coherent quasiparticle part but also in the incoherent part, which are reproduced by dynamical mean-field theory calculations and the spectral weight of the incoherent part is stronger within the Fermi surface.

CANGAROO-III Search for Gamma Rays from Kepler's Supernova Remnant

Kepler's supernova, discovered in October 1604, produced a remnant that has been well studied observationally in the radio, infrared, optical, and X-ray bands, and theoretically. Some models have predicted a TeV gamma-ray flux that is detectable with current Imaging Cherenkov Atmospheric Telescopes. We report on observations carried out in 2005 April with the CANGAROO-III telescope. No statistically significant excess was observed, and limitations on the allowed parameter range in the model are discussed.
