Observation of Very High Energy Gamma Rays from HESS J1804-216 with CANGAROO-III Telescopes

We observed the unidentified TeV gamma-ray source HESS J1804-216 with the CANGAROO-III atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes from May to July in 2006. We detected very high energy gamma rays above 600 GeV at the 10 sigma level in an effective exposure of 76 hr. We obtained a differential flux of (5.0+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.6_{sys})\times 10^{-12}(E/1 TeV)^{-α} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index αof 2.69 +/- 0.30_{stat} +/- 0.34_{sys}, which is consistent with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. We also confirm the extended morphology of the source. By combining our result with multi-wavelength observations, we discuss the possible counterparts of HESS J1804-216 and the radiation mechanism based on leptonic and hadronic processes for a supernova remnant and a pulsar wind nebula.

Effects of chemical pressure on the Fermi surface and band dispersion in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and first-principles electronic structure calculations on the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors Ln1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (Ln = Nd, Sm, and Eu). The observed Fermi surface and band dispersion show such changes that with decreasing ionic size of Ln3+, the curvature of the Fermi surface or -t'/t decreases, where t and t' are transfer integrals between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearestneighbor Cu sites, respectively. The increase of t with chemical pressure is found to be significant, which may explain the apparently inconsistent behavior seen in the hole-doped La2-xSrxCuO4 under epitaxial strain [M. Abrecht et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 057002 (2003)]. A gap due to the antiferromagnetism opens even in the nodal region for the Sm and Eu compounds, and the gap size increases in going from Ln = Sm to Eu.

Doping evolution of the electronic structure in the single-layer cuprates Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$: Comparison with other single-layer cuprates

We have performed angle-resolved photoemission and core-level x-ray photoemission studies of the single-layer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ (Bi2201) and revealed the doping evolution of the electronic structure from the lightly-doped to optimally-doped regions. We have observed the formation of the dispersive quasi-particle band, evolution of the Fermi ``arc'' into the Fermi surface and the shift of the chemical potential with hole doping as in other cuprates. The doping evolution in Bi2201 is similar to that in Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_2$ (Na-CCOC), where a rapid chemical potential shift toward the lower Hubbard band of the parent insulator has been observed, but is quite different from that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (LSCO), where the chemical potential does not shift, yet the dispersive band and the Fermi arc/surface are formed around the Fermi level already in the lightly-doped region. The (underlying) Fermi surface shape and band dispersions are quantitatively analyzed using tight-binding fit, and the deduced next-nearest-neighbor hopping integral $t'$ also confirm the similarity to Na-CCOC and the difference from LSCO.

Observation of an extended VHE gamma-ray emission from MSH 15-52 with CANGAROO-III

We have observed the supernova remnant MSH 15-52 (G320.4-1.2), which contains the gamma-ray pulsar PSR B1509-58, using the CANGAROO-III imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array from April to June in 2006. We detected gamma rays above 810 GeV at the 7 sigma level during a total effective exposure of 48.4 hours. We obtained a differential gamma-ray flux at 2.35 TeV of (7.9+/-1.5_{stat}+/-1.7_{sys}) \times 10^{-13} cm^{-2}s^{-1}TeV^{-1} with a photon index of 2.21+/-0.39_{stat}+/-0.40_{sys}, which is compatible with that of the H.E.S.S. observation in 2004. The morphology shows extended emission compared to our Point Spread Function. We consider the plausible origin of the high energy emission based on a multi-wavelength spectral analysis and energetics arguments.

Effects of electron-phonon coupling in angle-resolved photoemission spectra of SrTiO3

We have studied the O 2p valence-band structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3, in which a dilute concentration of electrons are doped into the d0 band insulator, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. We found that ARPES spectra at the valence band maxima at the M [k = (pi/a, pi/a, 0)]and R [k = (pi/a, pi/a, pi/a)] points start from ~ 3.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), consistent with the indirect band gap of 3.3 eV and the EF position at the bottom of the conduction band. The peak position of the ARPES spectra were, however, shifted toward higher binding energies by ~ 500 meV from the 3.3 eV threshold. Because the bands at M and R have pure O 2p character, we attribute this ~ 500 meV shift to strong coupling of the oxygen p hole with optical phonons in analogy with the peak shifts observed for d-electron photoemission spectra in various transition-metal oxides.

Measurements of 0.2 to 20 GeV/n cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra from 1997 through 2002 with the BESS spectrometer

We measured low energy cosmic-ray proton and helium spectra in the kinetic energy range 0.215 - 21.5 GeV/n at different solar activities during a period from 1997 to 2002. The observations were carried out with the BESS spectrometer launched on a balloon at Lynn Lake, Canada. A calculation for the correction of secondary particle backgrounds from the overlying atmosphere was improved by using the measured spectra at small atmospheric depths ranging from 5 through 37 g/cm^2. The uncertainties including statistical and systematic errors of the obtained spectra at the top of atmosphere are 5-7 % for protons and 6-9 % for helium nuclei in the energy range 0.5 - 5 GeV/n.

Distinct doping dependences of the pseudogap and superconducting gap La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ cuprate superconductors

We have performed a temperature-dependent angle-integrated photoemission study of lightly-doped to heavily-overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ and oxygen-doped La$_2$CuO$_{4.10}$. We found that both the magnitude $Δ$* of the (small) pseudogap and the temperature \textit{T}* at which the pseudogap is opened increases with decreasing hole concentration, consistent with previous studies. On the other hand, the superconducting gap $Δ_{sc}$ was found to remain small for decreasing hole concentration. The results can be explained if the superconducting gap opens only on the Fermi arc around the nodal (0,0)-($π,π$) direction while the pseudogap opens around $\sim$($π$, 0).

Lanthanide substitution effects in electron-doped high-Tc superconductors studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the electron-doped high-Tc superconductors (HTSCs) Sm_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (SCCO) and Eu_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4} (ECCO). Around the nodal point (pi/2, pi/2), we observed an energy gap at the Fermi level (EF) for both samples, resulting from the strong effects of antiferromagnetism. The magnitude of this gap in ECCO is larger than that in SCCO, implying that the effects of antiferromagnetism in ECCO are stronger than that in SCCO. Also, we quantitatively confirmed the effects of antiferromagnetism by the band dispersions to tight-binding calculation.

The hierarchy of multiple many-body interaction scales in high-temperature superconductors

To date, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been successful in identifying energy scales of the many-body interactions in correlated materials, focused on binding energies of up to a few hundred meV below the Fermi energy. Here, at higher energy scale, we present improved experimental data from four families of high-Tc superconductors over a wide doping range that reveal a hierarchy of many-body interaction scales focused on: the low energy anomaly ("kink") of 0.03-0.09eV, a high energy anomaly of 0.3-0.5eV, and an anomalous enhancement of the width of the LDA-based CuO2 band extending to energies of ~ 2 eV. Besides their universal behavior over the families, we find that all of these three dispersion anomalies also show clear doping dependence over the doping range presented.

Photoemission study of TiO2/VO2 interfaces

We have measured photoemission spectra of two kinds of TiO$_2$-capped VO$_2$ thin films, namely, that with rutile-type TiO$_2$ (r-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$) and that with amorphous TiO$_2$ (a-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$) capping layers. Below the Metal-insulator transition temperature of the VO$_2$ thin films, $\sim 300$ K, metallic states were not observed for the interfaces with TiO$_2$, in contrast with the interfaces between the band insulator SrTiO$_3$ and the Mott insulator LaTiO$_3$ in spite of the fact that both TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ are band insulators with $d^0$ electronic configurations and both VO$_2$ and LaTiO$_3$ are Mott insulators with $d^1$ electronic configurations. We discuss possible origins of this difference and suggest the importance of the polarity discontinuity of the interfaces. Stronger incoherent part was observed in r-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$ than in a-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$, suggesting Ti-V atomic diffusion due to the higher deposition temperature for r-TiO$_2$/VO$_2$.

Low-Energy Electronic Structure of the High-Tc Cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4 Studied by Angle-resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We have performed a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the high-Tc cuprates La2-xSrxCuO4, ranging from the underdoped insulator to the superconductor to the overdoped metal. We have revealed a systematic doping evolution of the band dispersions and (underlying) Fermi surfaces, pseudogap and quasi-particle features under the influence of strong electron-electron interaction and electron-phonon interaction. The unusual transport and thermodynamic properties are explained by taking into account the pseudogap opening and the Fermi arc formation, due to which the carrier number decreases as the doped hole concentration decreases.

Erratum: Detection of diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission from the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253

The CANGAROO-II telescope observed sub-TeV gamma-ray emission from the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. The emission region was extended with a radial size of 0.3-0.6 degree. On the contrary, H.E.S.S could not confirm this emission and gave upper limits at the level of the CANGAROO-II flux. In order to resolve this discrepancy, we analyzed new observational results for NGC 253 by CANGAROO-III and also assessed the results by CANGAROO-II. Observation was made with three telescopes of the CANGAROO-III in October 2004. We analyzed three-fold coincidence data by the robust Fisher Discriminant method to discriminate gamma ray events from hadron events. The result by the CANGAROO-III was negative. The upper limit of gamma ray flux was 5.8% Crab at 0.58 TeV for point-source assumption. In addition, the significance of the excess flux of gamma-rays by the CANGAROO-II was lowered to less than 4 sigma after assessing treatment of malfunction of photomultiplier tubes.

Study of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

We present the first angle-resolved photoemission measurement on the single-layer Hg-based cuprate, HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201). A quasi-particle peak in the spectrum and a kink in the band dispersion around the diagonal of the Brillouin zone are observed, whereas no structure is detected near the Brillouin zone boundary. To search for a material-dependent trend among hole-doped cuprates, including Hg1201, we use a tight-binding model to fit their Fermi surfaces. We find a positive correlation between the $T_{c,\mathrm{max}}$ and $t'/t$, consistent with theoretical predictions.

Neutrino Oscillation Effects on Supernova Light Element Synthesis

Neutrino oscillations affect light element synthesis through the neutrino-process in supernova explosions. The 7Li and 11B yields produced in a supernova explosion of a 16.2 solar-mass star model increase by factors of 1.9 and 1.3 in the case of large mixing angle solution with normal mass hierarchy and sin^{2}2theta_{13} > 0.002 compared with those without the oscillations. In the case of inverted mass hierarchy or nonadiabatic 13-mixing resonance, the increment of their yields is much smaller. Neutrino oscillations raise the reaction rates of charged-current neutrino-process reactions in the region outside oxygen-rich layers. The number ratio of 7Li/11B could be a tracer of normal mass hierarchy and relatively large theta_{13}, still satisfying sin^{2}2theta_{13} < 0.1, through future precise observations in stars having strong supernova component.

Supernova Neutrino Nucleosynthesis of Light Elements with Neutrino Oscillations

Light element synthesis in supernovae through neutrino-nucleus interactions, i.e., the nu-process, is affected by neutrino oscillations in the supernova environment. There is a resonance of 13-mixing in the O/C layer, which increases the rates of charged-current nu-process reactions in the outer He-rich layer. The yields of 7Li and 11B increase by about a factor of 1.9 and 1.3, respectively, for a normal mass hierarchy and an adiabatic 13-mixing resonance, compared to those without neutrino oscillations. In the case of an inverted mass hierarchy and a non-adiabatic 13-mixing resonance, the increase in the 7Li and 11B yields is much smaller. Observations of the 7Li/11B ratio in stars showing signs of supernova enrichment could thus provide a unique test of neutrino oscillations and constrain their parameters and the mass hierarchy.

Photoemission from buried interfaces in SrTiO3/LaTiO3 superlattices

We have measured photoemission spectra of SrTiO3/LaTiO3 superlattices with a topmost SrTiO3 layer of variable thickness. Finite coherent spectral weight with a clear Fermi cut-off was observed at chemically abrupt SrTiO3/LaTiO3 interfaces, indicating that an ``electronic reconstruction'' occurs at the interface between the Mott insulator LaTiO3 and the band insulator SrTiO3. For SrTiO3/LaTiO3 interfaces annealed at high temperatures (~ 1000 C), which leads to Sr/La atomic interdiffusion and hence to the formation of La1-xSrxTiO3-like material, the intensity of the incoherent part was found to be dramatically reduced whereas the coherent part with a sharp Fermi cut-off is enhanced due to the spread of charge. These important experimental features are well reproduced by layer dynamical-mean-field-theory calculation.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of perovskite-type transition-metal oxides and their analyses using tight-binding band structure

Nowadays it has become feasible to perform angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of transition-metal oxides with three-dimensional perovskite structures owing to the availability of high-quality single crystals of bulk and epitaxial thin films. In this article, we review recent experimental results and interpretation of ARPES data using empirical tight-binding band-structure calculations. Results are presented for SrVO$_3$ (SVO) bulk single crystals, and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ (LSFO) and La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ (LSMO) thin films. In the case of SVO, from comparison of the experimental results with calculated surface electronic structure, we concluded that the obtained band dispersions reflect the bulk electronic structure. The experimental band structures of LSFO and LSMO were analyzed assuming the G-type antiferromagnetic state and the ferromagnetic state, respectively. We also demonstrated that the intrinsic uncertainty of the electron momentum perpendicular to the crystal surface is important for the interpretation of the ARPES results of three-dimensional materials.

Effect of strong localization of doped holes in angle-resolved photoemission spectra of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of La$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$FeO$_3$ using {\it in situ} prepared thin films and determined its band structure. The experimental band dispersions could be well explained by an empirical band structure assuming the G-type antiferromagnetic state. However, the Fe 3d bands were found to be shifted downward relative to the Fermi level ($E_F$) by $\sim 1$ eV compared with the calculation and to form a (pseudo)gap of $\sim 1$ eV at $E_F$. We attribute this observation to a strong localization effect of doped holes due to polaron formation.
