Origin of the Higher-$T_\rm{c}$ Phase in the K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ System

Single crystals of K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ are prepared by quenching at various temperatures. The crystals obtained at higher quenching temperatures have a surface morphology with mesh-like texture. They show a sharp superconducting transition at $T_\rm{c}$ ~32 K with a large shielding volume fraction. On the other hand, the crystals prepared without quenching show an onset superconducting transition at ~44 K and a zero resistivity around ~33 K, and they possess island-like regions on the surface with a larger amount of Fe incorporation. In-situ high-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements tell us the Fe-vacancy ordered phase is generated at a temperature region around 270 °C via iron diffusion. The creation of this Fe-vacancy ordered phase may become a driving force of the growth of the higher $T_\rm{c}$ phase. The superconductivity at ~44 K is attributed to a metallic phase with no Fe-vacancy.

Electrochemical deposition of FeSe on RABiTS tapes

FeSe film is successfully fabricated onto Rolling Assisted Biaxially Textured Substrate (RABiTS) tapes by an electrochemical deposition technique. The deposited FeSe films tend to become high crystallinity with a decrease in the applied voltage to -1.0 V, and the compositional ratio of Fe to Se approaches 1:1. The sample deposited at -1.0 V shows a superconducting transition approximately 8.0 K in the magnetic susceptibility.

Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in BiS2-based EuFBiS2

We measured the electrical resistivity of a BiS2-based compound EuFBiS2 under high pressure. Polycrystalline EuFBiS2 shows insulator-metal transition and pressure-induced superconductivity above 0.7 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature increases with increasing applied pressure and shows the maximum value around 8.6 K at 1.8 GPa.

Site Selectivity on Chalcogen Atoms in Superconducting La(O,F)BiSSe

Single crystals of La(O,F)BiSSe were successfully grown by a CsCl flux method. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed that the crystal structure is isostructural with BiS$_2$- or BiSe$_2$-based compounds with space group $P4/nmm$ (lattice parameters $a$ = 4.1110(2) Å, $c$ = 13.6010(7) Å). However, the S atoms are selectively occupied at the apical site of the Bi-SSe pyramids in the superconducting layer. The single crystals show a superconducting transition at 4.2 K in the magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurement. The superconducting anisotropic parameter is determined to be 34 from its upper critical magnetic field. The anisotropy is in the same range with that of other members of the La(O,F)BiCh$_2$ ($Ch$ = S, Se) family under ambient pressure.

Electrical transport properties of small diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes aligned on ST-cut quartz substrates

A method is introduced to isolate and measure the electrical transport properties of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) aligned on an ST-cut quartz, from room temperature down to 2 K. The diameter and chirality of the measured SWNTs are accurately defined from Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A significant up-shift in the G-band of the resonance Raman spectra of the SWNTs is observed, which increases with increasing SWNTs diameter, and indicates a strong interaction with the quartz substrate. A semiconducting SWNT, with diameter 0.84 nm, shows Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and Coulomb blockade behaviors at low temperatures. Another semiconducting SWNT, with a thinner diameter of 0.68 nm, exhibits a transition from the semiconducting state to an insulating state at low temperatures. These results elucidate some of the electrical properties of SWNTs in this unique configuration and help pave the way towards prospective device applications.

Pressure-induced phase transition for single crystalline LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2

We have demonstrated a pressure-induced phase transition from a low-Tc phase to a high-Tc phase in a single crystal of the superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2. The high-Tc phase appears at 2.16 GPa and the maximum superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is observed at 6.7 K under 2.44 GPa. Although the anisotropy (γ) for the low-Tc phase is estimated to be 20, it is reduced by around half (9.3) in the high-Tc phase. This tendency is the same for the BiS2 system. The Tc of LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 has continued to increase up to the maximum pressure of this study (2.44 GPa). Therefore applied further pressure has the potential to induce a much higher Tc in this system.

High-Tc Phase of PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 single crystal induced by uniaxial pressure

We demonstrated a pressure-induced phase transition from a low-Tc phase (3.5 K) to a high-Tc phase (8.7 K) in single crystalline PrO0.5F0.5BiS2. The high-Tc phase is easily observed even at 0.7 GPa by uniaxial pressure obtained from a geometric effect of a single crystal with an extremely-thin thickness. For this phase transition, superconducting anisotropy and the coherence length along the c axis change from γ = 20 to 9.3 and from ξc = 0.56 to 0.71 nm respectively. It is suggested that a shrinkage in the c lattice constant by applied uniaxial pressure enhances the three dimensionality in the superconducting state.

The effect of exceptionally high fluorine doping on the anisotropy of single crystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx

We succeeded in growing single crystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx with exceptionally high fluorine concentration by using a CsCl flux method. Comparing to conventional flux methods, this method can introduce about double the amount of fluorine into the oxygen site. The obtained single crystal shows the highest superconducting transition temperature (Tc = 57.5 K) in single crystalline iron pnictides. In addition, the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) is almost three times as large as that of previously reported single crystals. This suggests that our single crystals are suitable for investigation of the intrinsic superconducting properties since they have few defects and impurities. Using both the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model and the effective mass model, we demonstrated that a higher fluorine concentration suppresses the anisotropic superconductivity of SmFeAsO1-xFx.

First single crystal growth and structural analysis of superconducting layered bismuth oxyselenide; La(O,F)BiSe2

Single crystal of La(O,F)BiSe2 was successfully grown for the first time by the CsCl flux method. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis clearly showed that La(O,F)BiSe2 crystalizes with space group P4/nmm (lattice parameters a = 4.1408(2) Å, c = 14.1096(6) Å). The structure is composed of alternating BiSe2 and LaO layers. Magnetic susceptibility and resistivity measurements showed the superconducting transition at 3.6 K, which is higher than that of as-grown La(O,F)BiS2. The structural analysis implies that La(O,F)BiSe2 is potential superconductor having higher Tc under high pressure.

Superconductivity in FeTe0.8S0.2 induced by battery-like reaction

Superconductivity is successfully induced by utilizing a battery-like reaction found in a typical Li-ion battery. Excess Fe in FeTe0.8S0.2 is electrochemically de-intercalated by applying a voltage in a citric acid solution. The superconducting properties improve with an increase in the applied voltage up to 1.5 V. This result suggests that an electrochemical reaction can be used as a novel method to develop new superconducting materials.

Coexistence of bulk superconductivity and ferromagnetism in CeO1-xFxBiS2

We show the observation of the coexistence of bulk superconductivity and ferromagnetism in CeO1-xFxBiS2(x = 0 - 1.0) prepared by annealing under high-pressure. In CeO1-xFxBiS2 system, both superconductivity and two types of ferromagnetism with respective magnetic transition temperatures of 4.5 K and 7.5 K are induced upon systematic F substitution. This fact suggests that carriers generated by the substitution of O by F are supplied to not only the BiS2 superconducting layers but also the CeO blocking layers. Furthermore, the highest superconducting transition temperature is observed when the ferromagnetism is also enhanced, which implies that superconductivity and ferromagnetism are linked to each other in the CeO1-xFxBiS2 system.

α-FeAs-free SmFeAsO1-xFx by low temperature sintering with slow cooling

We obtained amorphous-FeAs-free SmFeAsO1-xFx using a low temperature sintering with slow cooling. SmFeAsO1-xFx is sintered at 980 °C for 40 hours and cooled slowly down to 600 °C. The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of amorphous FeAs, and the slow cooling introduces much fluorine into SmFeAsO1-xFx. The superconductivity of this sample appears at 57.8 K and the superconducting volume fraction reaches 96 %. To study the change of fluorine concentration during the cooling process, samples are quenched by water at 950 °C, 900 °C, 850 °C, 800 °C, 750 °C and 700 °C. It is found that fluorine is substituted not only at the maximum heating temperature but also during the cooling process. The low temperature sintering with slow cooling is very effective to obtain a homogeneous SmFeAsO1-xFx with high fluorine concentration.

Phase diagram and superconductivity at 58.1 K in α-FeAs free SmFeAsO1-xFx

The Phase diagram of SmFeAsO1-xFx in terms of x is exhibited in this study. SmFeAsO1-xFx from x = 0 to x = 0.3 were prepared by low temperature sintering with slow cooling. The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of the amorphous FeAs, which is inevitably produced as an impurity by using high temperature sintering. Moreover, slow cooling is effective to obtain the high fluorine concentration. The compositional change from feedstock composition is quite small after this synthesis. We can reproducibly observe a record superconducting transition for an iron based superconductor at 58.1 K. This achievement of a high superconducting transition is due to the success in a large amount of fluorine substitution. A shrinking of the a lattice parameter caused by fluorine substitution is observed and the substitutional rate of fluorine changes at x =0.16.

Evolution of superconductivity in isovalent Te-substituted KxFe2-ySe2 crystals

We report the evolution of superconductivity and the phase diagram of the KxFe2-ySe2-zTez (z=0-0.6) crystals grown by a simple one-step synthesis. No structural transition is observed in any crystals, while lattice parameters exhibit a systematic expansion with Te content. The Tc exhibits a gradual decrease with increasing Te content from Tconset = 32.9 K at z = 0 to Tconset = 27.9 K at z = 0.5, followed by a sudden suppression of superconductivity at z = 0.6. Upon approaching a Te concentration of 0.6, the shielding volume fraction decreases and eventually drops to zero. Simultaneously, hump positions in r-T curve shift to lower temperatures. These results suggest that isovalent substitution of Te for Se in KxFe2-ySe2 crystals suppresses the superconductivity in this system.

Effect of the indium addition on the superconducting property and the impurity phase in polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx

We report enhancement in the magnetic critical current density of indium added polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx. The value of magnetic Jc is around 25 kA/cm2 at 4.2 K under self-magnetic field. Polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx is mainly composed of the superconducting grains and a little of amorphous FeAs compounds. These areas randomly co-exist and amorphous areas are located between superconducting grains. Therefore, the superconducting current is prevented by the amorphous areas. In this study, it is found that indium addition to polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx removes these amorphous areas and induces the bringing together the superconducting grains. It means the total contact surfaces of grains are increased. We suggest that the enhancement of the magnetic critical current density is a direct effect of the indium addition.

BiS2 - based superconductivity in F-substituted NdOBiS2

We have successfully synthesized a new BiS2-based superconductor NdOBiS2 with F-doping. This compound is composed of superconducting BiS2 layers and blocking NdO layers, which indicates that the BiS2 layer is the one of the common superconducting layers like the CuO2 layer of cuprates or Fe-As layer of Fe-based superconductors. We can obtain NdO1-xFxBiS2 with bulk superconductivity by a solid-state reaction under ambient pressure. Therefore, NdO1-xFxBiS2 should be the suitable material to elucidate the mechanism of superconductivity in the BiS2-layer.

Fabrication of binary FeSe superconducting wires by novel diffusion process

We report successful fabrication of multi- and mono-core FeSe wires with high transport critical current density Jc using a simple in-situ Fe-diffusion process based on the powder-in-tube (Fe-diffusion PIT) method. The seven-core wire showed transport Jc of as high as 1027 A/cm2 at 4.2 K. The superconducting transition temperature Tczero was observed at 10.5 K in the wire-samples, which is about 2 K higher than that of bulk FeSe. The Fe-diffusion PIT method is suitable for fabricating multi-core wires of the binary FeSe superconductors with superior properties.
