Field-tuned quasiparticles and electronic structure in heavy-fermion YbNi4P2

We study the Fermi surface topology and quasiparticle properties in the heavy fermion compound YbNi4P2 at high magnetic fields using quantum oscillation measurements. We observe a large decrease of the quasiparticle mass with increasing field and demonstrate good qualitative agreement with the single-ion Kondo model. At the putative Lifshitz transition at 17 T, we observe a sudden change of quantum oscillation frequencies suggesting an abrupt change of the electronic structure and/or quasiparticle characteristics. Our results demonstrate the ability to tune the electronic structure and provide input for theoretical models of YbNi4P2 and correlated electron systems in high magnetic fields.

Clean-limit superconductivity in Im-3m H3S synthesized from sulfur and hydrogen donor ammonia borane

We present detailed studies of the superconductivity in high-pressure H3S. X-ray diffraction measurements show that cubic Im-3m H3S was synthesized from elemental sulfur and hydrogen donor ammonia borane (NH3BH3). Our electrical transport measurements confirm superconductivity with a transition temperature Tc = 197 K at 153 GPa. From the analysis of both the normal state resistivity and the slope of the critical field, we conclude that the superconductivity is described by clean-limit behaviour. A significant broadening of the resistive transition in finite magnetic field is found, as expected for superconductors. We identify a linear temperature-over-field scaling of the resistance at the superconducting transition which is not described by existing theories.

Absence of superconducting dome at the charge-density-wave quantum phase transition in 2H-NbSe2

Superconductivity is often found in a dome around quantum critical points, i.e. 2nd-order quantum phase transitions. Here, we show that an enhancement of superconductivity is avoided at the critical pressure of the charge-density-wave (CDW) state in NbSe$_2$. We present comprehensive high-pressure Hall effect and magnetic susceptibility measurements of the CDW and superconducting state in NbSe$_2$. Initially, the 2nd-order CDW transition is suppressed smoothly but it drops to zero abruptly at PCDW = 4.4 GPa thus indicating a change to 1st order whilstthe superconducting transition temperature Tc rises continuously up to PCDW but is constant above. The putative 1st-order nature of the CDW transition is suggested as the cause for the absence of a superconducting dome at PCDW. Indeed, we show that the suppression of the superconducting state at low pressures is due to the loss of density of states inside the CDW phase whilst the initial suppression of the CDW state is accounted for by the stiffening of the underlying bare phonon mode.

Experimental evidence for orthorhombic Fddd crystal structure in elemental yttrium above 100 GPa

We present electrical resistance measurements of elemental yttrium on bulk and film samples, and both exhibit superconductivity at very high pressures. We show that the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature above 100 GPa is in good agreement with the predicted Fddd phase by Chen et al. [Phys. Rev. lett. 109, 157004 (2012)]. This result together with a new Rietveld refinement made on X-ray data at 123 GPa from Samudrala et al. [J. Phys. Condens. Matter 24, 362201 (2012)] offer strong evidence that the atomic structure of yttrium above 100 GPa is orthorhombic Fddd. Furthermore, our process of evaporating yttrium film directly on a diamond anvil is expected to be a valuable asset for future synthesis of new superhydride superconductors.

Fermi surface reconstruction and electron dynamics at the charge-density-wave transition in TiSe2

The evolution of the charge carrier concentrations and mobilities are examined across the charge-density-wave (CDW) transition in TiSe2. Combined quantum oscillation and magnetotransport measurements show that a small electron pocket dominates the electronic properties at low temperatures whilst an electron and hole pocket contribute at room temperature. At the CDW transition, an abrupt Fermi surface reconstruction and a minimum in the electron and hole mobilities are extracted from two-band and Kohler analysis of magnetotransport measurements. The minimum in the mobilities is associated with the overseen role of scattering from the softening CDW mode. With the carrier concentrations and dynamics dominated by the CDW and the associated bosonic mode, our results highlight TiSe2 as a prototypical system to study the Fermi surface reconstruction at a density-wave transition.

Synthesis of Sodium Polyhydrides at High Pressures

The only known compound of sodium and hydrogen is archetypal ionic NaH. Application of high pressure is known to promote states with higher atomic coordination, but extensive searches for polyhydrides with unusual stoichiometry remain unsuccessful in spite of several theoretical predictions. Here we report the first observation of formation of polyhydrides of Na (NaH3 and NaH7) above 40 GPa and 2000 K. We combined synchrotron x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy in a laser heated diamond anvil cell and theoretical Ab-Initio Random Structure search, which both agree in stable structures and compositions. Our results support the formation of multicenter bonding in a material with unusual stoichiometry. These results are applicable to the design of new energetic solids and high-temperature superconductors based on hydrogenrich materials.

Sustainable high critical temperature in a hydrocarbon superconductor

Organic superconductors are unique materials with a crystal structure made primarily of a complex carbon based network, an element associated directly with life, which were postulated to have a high critical temperature, $T_{C}$, even above room temperature, from a theoretical viewpoint. Pressure plays an essential role in the study of superconductivity in such organic materials, including creation of the first organic superconductor as well as the achievement of the highest $T_{C}$ of 14.2 K for charge transfer salts and 38 K for metal-doped fullerides. However, superconductivity in these organic systems is only sustainable within a very narrow pressure range (a few GPa) and is readily destroyed upon further compression. Here we report high-pressure magnetic susceptibility and structure measurements on a newly discovered superconductor, LaPhenanthrene. It is found that the application of pressure not only significantly increases $T_{C}$ from its ambient-pressure value of 4.8 K to 12.3 K at 18.4 GPa but also stabilizes the high $T_{C}$ over the entire pressure range (61 GPa) of the study. The evolution of $T_{C}$ with pressure is closely correlated with the angle $β$ of the monoclinic unit cell. Both $T_{C}$ and $β$ change sharply with increasing pressure initially but remain constant above 40 GPa, indicating that molecule orientation is essential to superconductivity. These behaviors can be understood in terms of pressure tuning of electron correlations, illustrating the unconventional nature of superconductivity in these hydrocarbon superconductors.

Pressure induced magnetic ordering in Yb2Pd2Sn with two quantum critical points

Pressure induced long range antiferromagnetic order is discovered in Yb2Pd2Sn by measuring the electrical resistivity under pressure up to 5.0 GPa. Magnetic ordering is observed above about 1.0 GPa, being the lowest pressure in Yb-intermetallics showing pressure induced magnetic ordering, Unexpectedly, ordering disappears above about 4.0 GPa, giving rise to the first observation of the appearance of two quantum critical points persisting in a broad range of pressure within a single material.

Specific Heat of the beta-Pyrochlore Oxide Superconductors CsOs2O6 and RbOs2O6

Two beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductors, CsOs2O6 and RbOs2O6, are studied thermodynamically by measuring specific heat on polycrystalline samples. It is found that a Sommerfeld coefficient ? is nearly equal, 20 mJ/K2 mol Os, in the two oxides with different superconducting transition temperatures; Tc = 3.3 K and 6.3 K, respectively. This suggests that the density of states at the Fermi level is not a crucial parameter to determine the Tc of the beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductors, which is incompatible with the general expectation for a conventional BCS-type superconductor. Anomalous lattice contributions to specific heat at low temperature are also reported, which may come from nearly localized phonon modes associated with the rattling of the alkali metal ions weakly bound in an oversized cage formed by OsO6 octahedra.

Second Anomaly in the Specific Heat of beta-Pyrochlore Oxide Superconductor KOs2O6

Resistivity and specific heat have been measured on a single crystalline sample of the beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductor, KOs2O6. It is found that a second peak in specific heat, which may evidence an unknown phase transition, appears around Tp ~ 7.5 K below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 9.53 K. Applying magnetic fields up to 14 T, Tc is reduced gradually down to 7.1 K, while Tp is raised a little and becomes even higher than Tc at 14 T, which implies that the second anomaly is not associated directly with the superconductivity. It is demonstrated, however, that there is significant communication between the two anomalies, suggesting that they come from the same electrons. It is also reported that the Sommerfeld coefficient ? in KOs2O6 is possibly much larger than in other members of beta-pyrochlore oxide superconductors, RbOs2O6 (Tc = 6.3 K) and CsOs2O6 (Tc = 3.3 K).

Photocarrier Injection and Current-Voltage Characteristics of a La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/SrTiO3:Nb Heterojunction at Low Temperature

An epitaxial heterojunction made of a p-type perovskite manganite La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 film and an n-type strontium titanate SrTiO3:Nb substrate has been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The I - V characteristics and photovoltaic properties are measured under a UV light irradiation in a wide temperature range down to 10 K. It is found that the junction works as an efficient UV photodiode with a large external quantum efficiency of 28%. It is also demonstrated that the manganite film can be doped with a certain amount of holes by the photcarrier injection. The maximum surface hole density is estimated to b 3.0 X 10^13 cm^-2.

High Pressure Effects on Superconductivity in the beta-pyrochlore Oxides AOs2O6 (A=K, Rb, Cs)

Recently new pyrochlore oxides superconductors AOs2O6 (A=K,Rb,Cs) were found and we measured the pressure dependence of magnetization up to 1.2 GPa in order to deduce the pressure effect of Tc in the three beta-pyrochlore oxides. It is found that the initial pressure dependence of Tc is positive for all the compounds. Only KOs2O6 exhibits a saturation in Tc at 0.56 GPa and the downturn at higher pressure

Photocarrier injection and the I-V characteristics of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3/SrTiO3:Nb heterojunctions

Oxide heterojunctions made of p-type L0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSMO) and niobium-doped n-type SrTiO3 (STO:Nb) have been fabricated by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique and are characterized under UV light irradiation by measuring the current-voltage, photovoltaic properties and the junction capacitance. It is shown that the heterojunctions work as an efficient UV photodiode, in which photogenerated holes in the STO:Nb substrate are injected to the LSMO film. The maximum surface hole density Q/e and external quantum efficiency gamma are estimated to be 8.3x1012 cm-2 and 11 % at room temperature, respectively. They are improved significantly in a p-i-n junction of LSMO/STO/STO:Nb, where Q/e and gamma are 3.0x1013 cm-2 and 27 %, respectively.
