Nonlinear optical response from quantum kinetic equation

Motivated by the nonlinear Hall effect observed in topological semimetals, we studied the photocurrent by the quantum kinetic equation. We recovered the shift current and injection current discovered by Sipe et al., and the nonlinear Hall current induced by Berry curvature dipole (BCD) proposed by Inti Sodemann and Liang Fu. Especially, we further proposed that 3-form tensor can also induce photocurrent, in addition to the Berry curvature and BCD. This work will supplement the existing mechanisms for photocurrent. In contrast to the shift current induced by shift vector, all photocurrents induced by gradient/curl of Berry curvature, and high rank tensor require circularly polarized light and topologically non-trivial band structure, viz. non-vanishing Berry curvature.

Magnetic orders induced by RKKY interaction in Tsai-type quasicrystalline approximant Au-Al-Gd

Recent experimental study on Tsai-type quasicrystalline approximant Au-Al-Gd has revealed the presence of magnetic orders and phase transitions with changing the Au/Al concentration. Motivated by the experiment, we theoretically investigate whether a successive change of magnetic orders occurs in a minimal magnetic model including the RKKY interaction only. We find that the model induces multifarious magnetic orders depending on the Fermi wavenumber and gives a good starting point for understanding the experimental observation. In addition, we predict the presence of an undiscovered novel magnetic order called cuboc order at large Fermi wavenumber region.

A charge model as an effective model of one-dimensional Hubbard and extended Hubbard systems: its application to linear optical spectrum calculations in large systems based upon many-body Wannier functions

We propose an effective model called the "charge model", for the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard and extended Hubbard models. In this model, spin-charge separation, which has been justified from an infinite on-site repulsion ($U$) in the strict sense, is compatible with charge fluctuations. Our analyses based on the many-body Wannier functions succeeded in determining the optical conductivity spectra in large systems. The obtained spectra reproduce the spectra for the original models well even in the intermediate $U$ region of $U=5-10T$, with $T$ being the nearest-neighbor electron hopping energy. These results indicate that the spin-charge separation works fairly well in this intermediate $U$ region against the usual expectation and that the charge model is an effective model that applies to actual quasi-one-dimensional materials classified as strongly correlated electron systems.

Machine Learning Phase Diagram in the Half-filled One-dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

We demonstrate that supervised machine learning (ML) with entanglement spectrum can give useful information for constructing phase diagram in the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. Combining ML with infinite-size density-matrix renormalization group, we confirm that bond-order-wave phase remains stable in the thermodynamic limit.

Magnetization plateau and supersolid phases in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a tetragonally distorted fcc lattice

The Heisenberg model on a face center cubic (fcc) lattice is a typical three-dimensional frustrated spin system expected to have magnetization plateaus and supersolid phases. There are model compounds $A_2$CoTeO$_6$ ($A$ = Ca, Sr, Pb) for the fcc lattice but with lattice distortions. Motivated by the presence of the compounds, we investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a tetragonally distorted fcc lattice in the magnetic field using a large-size cluster mean-field method for the sake of finding new supersolid phases. We find five supersolid phases in the model, indicating possibility to observe supersolid phases in these compounds. We also find that one of the supersolid phases is similar to the nonclassical coplanar phase obtained in the XXZ model on the triangular lattice.

Possible light-induced superconductivity in a strongly correlated electron system

Using a nonequilibrium implementation of the Lanczos-based exact diagonalisation technique we study the possibility of the light-induced superconducting phase coherence in a solid state system after an ultrafast optical excitation. In particular, we investigate the buildup of superconducting correlations by calculating an exact time-dependent wave function reflecting the properties of the system in non-equilibrium and the corresponding transient response functions. Within our picture we identify a possible transient Meissner effect after dynamical quenching of the non-superconducting wavefunction and extract a characteristic superfluid density that we compare to experimental data. Finally, we find that the stability of the induced superconducting state depends crucially on the nature of the excitation quench: namely, a pure interaction quench induces a long-lived superconducting state, whereas a phase quench leads to a short-lived transient superconductor.

Photoinduced charge carrier dynamics in Hubbard two-leg ladders and chains

The charge carrier dynamics of doped electronic correlated systems on ladders and chains, subject to ultrafast photoirradiation, is investigated using the time-dependent Lanczos method. The time-resolved optical conductivity and the temporal profiles of other relevant quantities, including the doublon number, the kinetic energy, and the interaction energy, are calculated. Two competitive factors that can influence the transient charge carrier dynamics are identified as the thermal effect and the charge effect. We demonstrate that the analysis of their interplay can provide an intuitive way to understand the numerical results and the recent optical pump-probe experiment on a two-leg ladder cuprate.

Syntheses and First-Principles Calculations of the Pseudobrookite Compound AlTi2O5

We synthesize a new titanium-oxide compound AlTi2O5 with pseudobrookite-type structure. The formal valence of Ti is 3.5+ that is the same as the Magneli compound Ti4O7 and the spinel compound LiTi2O4. AlTi2O5 exhibits insulating behavior in resistivity. Using experimentally determined crystal structure, we perform the first-principles calculations for the electronic structures. Experimentally suggested random distribution of Al and Ti is not the origin of the insulating behavior. The Fermi surfaces for nonrandom AlTi2O5 show cylindrical shapes reflecting a layered structure, which indicates a possible nesting-driven order. Constructing a tight-binding model from the first-principles calculations, we calculate the spin and charge susceptibilities using the random phase approximation. We suggest possible charge-density-wave state forming Ti3+ chains separated from each other by Ti4+ chains, similar to the low-temperature phase of Ti4O7.

Ultrafast transient interference in pump-probe spectroscopy of band and Mott insulators

Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy with high temporal and spectral resolutions provides new insight into ultrafast nonequilibrium phenomena. We propose that transient interference between pump and probe pulses is realized in pump-probe spectroscopy of band and Mott insulators, which can be observed only after recent developments of ultrafast spectroscopic techniques. A continuum structure in the excitation spectrum of band insulators is found to act as a medium for storing the spectral information of the pump pulse, and the spectrum detected by the probe pulse is interfered with by the medium, generating the transient interference in the energy domain. We also demonstrate the transient interference in the presence of electron correlations in a one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model. Furthermore, bosons coupled to electrons additively contribute to the interference. Our finding will provide an interpretation of probe-energy-dependent oscillations recently observed in the pump-probe spectrum for a two-dimensional Mott insulator.

The First-principles Study on the Mechanics, Optical and Phonon Properties of Carbon Chains

The two kinds of carbyne, i.e., cumulene and polyyne, are investigated by the first principles, where the mechanical properties, electronic structure, optical and phonon properties of the two carbynes are calculated. The results on the crystal binding energy and the formation energy show that polyyne is more stable and harder than cumulene, and both are difficult to be synthesized from diamond or graphite. The tensile stiffness, bond stiffness and Young's modulus of cumulene are 94.669 eV/Å, 90.334GPa and 60.62GPa, respectively; while the corresponding values of polyyne are 94.939eV/Å, 101.42GPa and 60.06GPa, respectively. The supercell calculation shows that carbyne is the most stable at N=5, where N is the supercell number. It indicates that the carbon chain with 10 atoms is the most stable. The calculation on the electronic band structure shows that cumulene is conductor, while polyyne is semiconductor with a band gap as 0.37eV. The dielectric function of carbynes varies in different direction, consistent with the one dimensional nature of the carbon chains. In the phonon dispersion of cumulene there are imaginary frequencies with the lowest value down to -3.817THz, which indicates that cumulene could be unstable at room temperature and normal pressure.

Ground-state phase diagram of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice

The Kitaev-Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice has been studied for the purpose of finding exotic states such as quantum spin liquid and topological orders. On the kagome lattice, in spite of a spin-liquid ground state in the Heisenberg model, the stability of the spin-liquid state has hardly been studied in the presence of the Kitaev interaction. Therefore, we investigate the ground state of the classical and quantum spin systems of the kagome Kitaev-Heisenberg model. In the classical system, we obtain an exact phase diagram that has an eight-fold degenerated canted ferromagnetic phase and a subextensive degenerated Kitaev antiferromagnetic phase. In the quantum system, using the Lanczos-type exact diagnalization and cluster mean-field methods, we obtain two quantum spin-liquid phases, an eight-fold degenerated canted ferromagnetic phase similar to the classical spin system, and an eight-fold degenerated $\bf q=0$ $120^\circ$ ordered phase induced by quantum fluctuation. These results may provide a crucial clue to recently observed magnetic structures of the rare-earth-based kagome lattice compounds $A_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ ($A$ = Mg, Zn; RE = Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb).

Cluster-Based Haldane States in Spin-1/2 Cluster Chains

The Haldane state is a typical quantum and topological state of matter, which exhibits an edge state corresponding to symmetry-protected topological order in a one-dimensional integer spin chain. This edge state can be utilized for a processing unit of quantum computation. Its realization, however, has difficulties with synthesis of integer spin compounds. In contrast, one-half spin systems are more designable due to recent progress on intended synthesis of organic materials, quantum dots, and optical lattices. Here we propose a concept to design the Haldane state with one-half spins by making use of a chain composed of one-half spin clusters. If the clusters contains two spins, the ground state of a chain corresponds to the Affleck--Kennedy--Lieb--Tasaki state. In the case of an odd number of spins in the clusters, we propose a concrete procedure to construct a field-induced Haldane state. We illustrate the procedure with a 5-spin cluster chain.

Dynamical DMRG study of spin and charge excitations in the four-leg t-t'-J ladder

The ground state of the t-t'-J ladder with four legs favors a striped charge distribution for the parameters corresponding to hole-doped cuprate superconductors. We investigate the dynamical spin and charge structure factors of the model by using the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and clarify the influence of the stripe on the structure factors. The dynamical charge structure factor along the momentum direction from q=(0,0) to (pi,0) clearly shows low-energy excitations corresponding to the stripe order in hole doping. On the other hand, the stripe order weakens in electron doping, resulting in fewer low-energy excitations in the charge channel. In the spin channel, we find incommensurate spin excitations near q=(pi,pi) forming an hourglass behavior in hole doping, while in electron doping we find clearly spin-wave-like dispersions starting from q=(pi,pi). Along the (0,0)-(pi,0) direction, the spin excitations are strongly influenced by the stripes in hole doping, resulting in two branches that form a discontinuous behavior in the dispersion. In contrast, the electron-doped systems show a downward shift in energy toward (pi,0). These behaviors along the (0,0)-(pi,0) direction are qualitatively similar to momentum-dependent spin excitations recently observed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments in hole- and electron-doped cuprate superconductors.

Accuracy of the microcanonical Lanczos method to compute real-frequency dynamical spectral functions of quantum models at finite temperatures

We examine the accuracy of the microcanonical Lanczos method (MCLM) developed by Long, {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 68}, 235106 (2003)] to compute dynamical spectral functions of interacting quantum models at finite temperatures. The MCLM is based on the microcanonical ensemble, which becomes exact in the thermodynamic limit. To apply the microcanonical ensemble at a fixed temperature, one has to find energy eigenstates with the energy eigenvalue corresponding to the internal energy in the canonical ensemble. Here, we propose to use thermal pure quantum state methods by Sugiura and Shimizu [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 111}, 010401 (2013)] to obtain the internal energy. After obtaining the energy eigenstates using the Lanczos diagonalization method, dynamical quantities are computed via a continued fraction expansion, a standard procedure for Lanczos-based numerical methods. Using one-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with $S=1/2$, we demonstrate that the proposed procedure is reasonably accurate even for relatively small systems.

Ground state phase diagram of Kitaev-Heisenberg model on honeycomb-triangular lattice

The Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on both honeycomb and triangular lattices has been studied intensively in recent years as a possible model to describe spin-orbital physics in iridium oxides. In the model, there are many phases characteristic for each lattice. However, there is no study how the phases in the two lattices merge each other when geometry changes from honeycomb lattice to triangular lattice. We investigate the ground state of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model defined on the system connecting the honeycomb and triangular lattices, named a honeycomb-triangular lattice. We obtain a ground state phase diagram of this model with classical spins by using the Luttinger-Tisza method and classical Monte Carlo simulation. In addition to known phases in the honeycomb and triangular lattices, we find coexisting phases consisting of the known phases. Based on the exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group calculations for the model with quantum spins, we find that quantum fluctuations less affect on the phase diagram.

Magnetic phase diagrams and magnetization plateaus of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square-kagome lattice with three nonequivalent exchange interactions

Magnetization plateaus in quantum spin systems emerges in two-dimensional frustrated systems such as kagome lattice. The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square-kagome lattice is also appropriate for the study of magnetization plateau. Motivated by recent experimental finding of such a square-kagome lattice with nonequivalent three bonds, we investigate the phase diagrams and magnetization plateaus of the lattice by the exact diagonalization method. In addition to previously reported the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus in the model with two equivalent bonds, we find a new 2/3 plateau whose magnetic structure is characterized by spontaneously broken four-fold rotational symmetry. The plateau appears only in the case of three nonequivalent bonds. We propose the possibility of finding plateaus including the new one.

Photoinduced absorptions inside the Mott gap in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model

We theoretically investigate pump-probe optical responses in the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model describing cuprates by using a time-dependent Lanczos method. At half filling, pumping generates photoinduced absorptions inside the Mott gap. A part of low-energy absorptions is attributed to the independent propagation of photoinduced holons and doublons. The spectral weight just below the Mott gap increases with decreasing the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$. We find that the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction $V_1$ enhances this $U$ dependence, indicating the presence of biexcitonic contributions formed by two holon-doublon pairs. Photo-pumping in hole-doped systems also induces spectral weights below remnant Mott-gap excitations, being consistent with recent experiments. The induced weights are less sensitive to $V_1$ and may be related to the formation of a biexcitonic state in the presence of hole carriers.

Ground state phase diagram of the triangular lattice Hubbard model by density matrix renormalization group method

Two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method is employed to examine the ground state phase diagram of the Hubbard model on the triangular lattice at half filling. The calculation reveals two discontinuities in the double occupancy with increasing the repulsive Hubbard interaction U at Uc1 = 7.55 t and Uc2 = 9.65 t (t being the hopping integral), indicating that there are three phases separated by first order transitions. The absence of any singularity in physical quantities for 0 < U < Uc1 implies that this phase corresponds to a metallic phase. The local spin density induced by an applied pinning magnetic field for U > Uc2 exhibits a three sublattice feature, which is compatible with the Neel ordered state realized in the strong coupling limit. For Uc1 < U < Uc2, a response to the applied pinning magnetic field is comparable to that in the metallic phase but a relatively large spin correlation length is found with neither valence bond nor chiral magnetic order, suggesting a paramagnetic nature which resembles gapless spin liquid. The calculation also finds that the pair- ing correlation function monotonically decreases with increasing U and thus the superconductivity is unlikely in the intermediate phase.
