Reentrant Topological Phase Transition in a Bridging Model between Kitaev and Haldane Chains

We present a reentrant phase transition in a bridging model between two different topological models: Kitaev and Haldane chains. This model is activated by introducing a bond alternation into the Kitaev chain [A. Yu Kitaev, Phys.-Usp. {\bf 44} 131 (2001)]. Without the bond alternation, finite pairing potential induces a topological state defined by zero-energy Majorana edge mode, while finite bond alternation without the pairing potential makes a different topological state similar to the Haldane state, which is defined by local Berry phase in the bulk. The topologically-ordered state corresponds to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger state, which is classified as the same symmetry class. We thus find a phase transition between the two topological phases with a reentrant phenomenon, and extend the phase diagram in the plane of the pairing potential and the bond alternation by using three techniques: recursive equation, fidelity, and Pfaffian. In addition, we find that the phase transition is characterized by both the change of the position of Majorana zero-energy modes from one edge to the other edge and the emergence of a string order in the bulk, and that the reentrance is based on a sublattice U(1) rotation. Consequently, our study and model do not only open a direct way to discuss the bulk and edge topologies, but demonstrate an example of the reentrant topologies.

Majorana Zero-Energy Mode and Fractal Structure in Fibonacci-Kitaev Chain

We theoretically study a Kitaev chain with a quasiperiodic potential, where the quasiperiodicity is introduced by a Fibonacci sequence. Based on an analysis of the Majorana zero-energy mode, we find the critical $p$-wave superconducting pairing potential separating a topological phase and a non-topological phase. The topological phase diagram with respect to Fibonacci potentials follow a self-similar fractal structure characterized by the box-counting dimension, which is an example of the interplay of fractal and topology like the Hofstadter's butterfly in quantum Hall insulators.

Spectral Weight of Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering in Doped Cuprates: Effect of Core-Hole Lifetime

We examine the effect of core-hole lifetime on the spectral weight of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in hole-doped cuprates. We calculate the spectral weight by using exact diagonalization technique for a 4x4 doped Hubbard lattice and find that spin-flip channel detecting single-magnon excitation is less sensitive to the core-hole lifetime while in non-spin-flip channel the spectral weight is strongly dependent on the lifetime. In the latter, charge and two-magnon excitations predominately contribute to RIXS for short and long core-hole lifetimes, respectively. For a realistic value of the core-hole lifetime in cuprates, both the charge and two-magnon excitations are expected to contribute to non-spin-flip channel in RIXS when the incident-photon energy is tuned to the main peak of x-ray absorption spectrum.

Static and Dynamic Magnetic Properties of Spin-1/2 Inequilateral Diamond-Chain Compounds $A_3$Cu$_3$AlO$_2$(SO$_4$)$_4$ ($A$=K, Rb, and Cs)

Spin-1/2 compounds A3Cu3AlO2(SO4)4 (A=K, Rb, and Cs) have one-dimensional (1D) inequilateral diamond chains. We analyze the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and determine the magnetic exchange interactions. In contrast to the azurite, a dimer is formed on one of the sides of the diamond. From numerical analyses of the proposed model, we find that the dimer together with a nearly isolated 1D Heisenberg chain characterizes magnetic properties including magnetization curve and magnetic excitations. This implies that a dimer-monomer composite chain without frustration is a good starting point for describing these compounds.

Ground state properties of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ determined from $\textit{ab initio}$ Hamiltonian and its extensions containing Kitaev and extended Heisenberg interactions

We investigate the ground state properties of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ based on numerical calculations of the recently proposed {\it ab initio} Hamiltonian represented by Kitaev and extended Heisenberg interactions. To overcome the limitation posed by small tractable system sizes in the exact diagonalization study employed in a previous study (Yamaji $\textit{et al.}$, Phys. Rev. Lett. $\textbf{113}$, 107201 (2014)), we apply two-dimensional density matrix renomalization group, and infinite-size tensor-network method. By calculating at much larger system sizes, we critically test the validity of the exact diagonalization results. The results consistently indicate that the ground state of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ is a magnetically ordered state with zigzag configuration in agreement with experimental observations and the previous diagonalization study. Applications of the two independent methods in addition to the exact diagonalization study further uncover a consistent and rich phase diagram near the zigzag phase beyond the accessibility of the exact diagonalization. For example, in the parameter space away from the $\textit{ab initio}$ value of $\mathrm{Na_2IrO_3}$ controlled by the trigonal distortion, we find three phases: (i) an ordered phase with the magnetic moment aligned mutually in $120$ degrees orientation on every third hexagon, (ii) a magnetically ordered phase with a $16$-site unit-cell, and (iii) an ordered phase with presumably incommensurate periodicity of the moment. It suggests that potentially rich magnetic structures may appear in $A_\mathrm{2}\mathrm{IrO_3}$ compounds for $A$ other than Na. The present results also serve to establish the accuracy of the first-principles approach in reproducing the available experimental results thereby further contribute to find a route to realize the Kitaev spin liquid.

Incident-energy-dependent spectral weight of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in doped cuprates

We theoretically investigate the incident-photon energy omega_i dependence of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) tuned for the Cu L edge in cuprate superconductors by using the exact diagonalization technique for a single-band Hubbard model. Depending on the value of core-hole Coulomb interaction in the intermediate state, RIXS for non-spin-flip channel shows either a omega_i-dependent fluorescencelike or omega_i-independent Raman-like behavior for hole doping. An analysis of x-ray absorption suggests that the core-hole Coulomb interaction is larger than on-site Coulomb interaction in the Hubbard model, resulting in a fluorescencelike behavior in RIXS consistent with recent RIXS experiments. A shift on the high-energy side of the center of spectral distribution is also predicted for electron-doped systems though spectral weight is small. Main structures in spin-flip channel exhibit a Raman-like behavior as expected, accompanied with a fluorescencelike behavior with small intensity.

Origin of in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the antiferromagnetic phase of Fe$_{1+x}$Te

Motivated by a recent experimental report on in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the double-striped antiferromagnetic phase of FeTe, we theoretically calculate in-plane resistivity by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase. We find that the resistivity is larger along an antiferromagnetically ordered direction than along a ferromagnetically ordered one, consistent with experimental observation. The anisotropic results are mainly contributed from Drude weight, whose behavior is attributed to Fermi surface topology of the ordered phase.

Numerical method to compute optical conductivity based on pump-probe simulations

A numerical method to calculate optical conductivity based on a pump-probe setup is presented. Its validity and limits are tested and demonstrated via the concrete numerical simulations on the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model both in equilibrium and out of equilibrium. By employing either a step- or a Gaussian-like probing vector potential, it is found that in nonequilibrium, the method in the narrow-probe-pulse limit can be identified with variant types of linear response theory, which, in equilibrium, produce identical results. The observation reveals the underlying probe-pulse dependence of the optical conductivity calculations in nonequilibrium, which may have its applications in the theoretical analysis of ultrafast spectroscopy measurements.

Phenomenological Magnetic Model in Tsai-Type Approximants

Motivated by recent discovery of canted ferromagnetism in Tsai-type approximants Au-Si-RE (RE = Tb, Dy, Ho), we propose a phenomenological magnetic model reproducing their magnetic structure and thermodynamic quantities. In the model, cubic symmetry ($m\bar{3}$) of the approximately-regular icosahedra plays a key role in the peculiar magnetic structure determined by a neutron diffraction experiment. Our magnetic model does not only explain magnetic behaviors in the quasicrystal approximants, but also provides a good starting point for the possibility of coexistence between magnetic long-range order and aperiodicity in quasicrystals.

A small shoulder of optical absorption in polycrystalline HfO2 by LDA+U approach

The dielectric function of the wide-gap optical material HfO2 is investigated by the local density approximation (LDA) +U approach. We focus on the origin of the shoulder-like structure near the edge of the band gap in the imaginary part of the dielectric function, which has been observed on the thin films of monoclinic HfO2. A comparison study on the three polymorphs of hafnia shows that regardless of the underlying crystal structure, the existence of the shoulder is directly controlled by the value of the shortest length of Hf-O bonds. The proposition is further supported by the numerical simulations of isostatic pressing. A possible implication in high-pressure measurements is suggested accordingly.

GdN thin-film: Chern Insulating State on Square Lattice

Using first-principles calculations, we predict a Chern insulating phase in thin films of the ferromagnetic semi-metal GdN. In contrast to previously proposed Chern insulator candidates, which mostly rely on honeycomb lattices, this system affords a great chance to realize the quantum anomalous Hall Effect on a square lattice without either a magnetic substrate or transition metal doping, making synthesis easier. The band inversion between 5d-orbitals of Gd and 2p-orbitals of N is verified by first-principles calculation based on density functional theory, and the band gap can be as large as 100 meV within GdN trilayer. With further increase of film thickness, the band gap tends to close and the metallic bulk property becomes obvious.

Quasi-Spin Correlations in a Frustrated Quantum Spin Ladder

The quasi-spin correlations in a frustrated quantum spin ladder with one-half magnetization are theoretically studied by using the density-matrix renormalization-group method and the quasi-spin transformation. In this model, the frustration induces a gapless-to-gapful phase transition with a strong rung coupling. The gapful state is observed as the one-half magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve. In the magnetization-plateau state, we find that the quasi-spin dimer has a large expectation value with long-ranged correlations. This result does not only comes in useful to clarify the magnetization-plateau state, but gives a crucial information to understand the magnetization curve of the real compound BiCu$_2$PO$_6$, whose effective spin model corresponds to ours.

Magnetization Plateaux by Reconstructed Quasi-spinons in a Frustrated Two-Leg Spin Ladder under a Magnetic Field

The quantum phase transitions induced by a magnetic field are theoretically studied in a frustrated two-leg spin ladder. Using the density-matrix renormalization-group method, we find some magnetic phase transitions and plateaux in two different cases of strong and weak rung couplings. With the strong rung coupling, the three magnetization plateaux are found at 1/3, 1/2, and 2/3 due to the frustration. Those can be understood in terms of a quasi-spinon reconstructed from the singlet and the triplets of spins on a rung. The plateau at 1/2 corresponds to the valence bond solid of the quasi-spinons, while the plateaux at 1/3 and 2/3 can be associated with the array of quasi-spinons such as soliton lattice. This is different from the usual Bose-Einstein-condensation picture of triplons. Our results will be useful to understand magnetization curves in BiCu$_2$PO$_6$.

Enhanced charge excitations in electron-doped cuprates by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) tuned for the Cu L edge is a possible tool to detect charge excitations in cuprate superconductors. We theoretically investigate the possibility for observing a collective charge excitation by the RIXS. The RIXS process via the intermediate state inevitably makes the spectral weight of charge excitation stronger in electron doping than in hole doping. Electron-hole asymmetry also appears in the dynamical charge structure factor, showing a new enhanced small-momentum low-energy mode in electron doping. These facts indicate a possibility of detecting the new charge mode by RIXS in electron-doped systems.

Orbital-selective electronic excitations in iron arsenides revealed by simulated nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering

Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) is a possible tool to detect charge excitations in electron systems. In addition, multipole transitions at high-momentum-transfer region open a new possibility to determine orbital-selective electronic excitations in multi-orbital itinerant 3d electron systems. As a theoretical example, we chose the antiferromagnetic state of iron arsenides and demonstrate that the orbital-selective excitations are detectable by choosing appropriate momentum transfer in NIXS. We propose that both NIXS and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering are complementary to each other for fully understanding the nature of orbital excitations in multi-orbital itinerant electron systems.

Photoinduced in-gap excitations in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model

We investigate the time evolution of optical conductivity in the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model driven by a transient laser pulse, by using the time-dependent Lanczos method. Photoinduced in-gap excitations exhibit a qualitatively different structure in the spin-density wave (SDW) in comparison to the charge-density-wave (CDW) phase. In the SDW, the origin of a low-energy in-gap excitation is attributed to the even-odd parity of the photoexcited states, while in the CDW an in-gap state is due to confined photogenerated carriers. The signature of the in-gap excitations can be identified as a characteristic oscillation in the time evolution of physical quantities.

Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Study of Extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Model

We study an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model including additional anisotropic couplings by using two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method. Calculating the gound-state energy, entanglement entropy, and spin-spin correlation functions, we make a phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model around spin-liquid phase. We find a zigzag antiferromagnetic phase, a ferromagnetic phase, a 120-degree antiferromagnetic phase, and two kinds of incommensurate phases around the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that entanglement levels in the Kitaev spin-liquid phase are degenerate forming pairs but those in the magnetically ordered phases are non-degenerate. The Schmidt gap defined as the energy difference between the lowest two levels changes at the phase boundary adjacent to the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. However, we find that phase boundaries between magnetically ordered phases do not necessarily agree with the change of the Schmidt gap.

Density-matrix renormalization group study of third harmonic generation in one-dimensional Mott insulator coupled with phonon

We examine the third-order non-linear optical response of a one-dimensional Mott insulator coupled with phonons. The Mott insulator is described by an extended Hubbard-Holstein model. The third harmonic generation (THG) of the model is calculated by dynamical density-matrix renormalization group. We find that the electron-phonon interaction enhances the intensity of THG if the on-site Coulomb interaction is comparable to the band width, but the enhancement is small for a realistic parameter value of a typical Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_3$. The low-energy spin excitation does not contribute to the optical response if the electron-phonon coupling is neglected. We find that the THG spectrum can detect the spin excitations even for no electron-phonon coupling. The introduction of the electron-phonon coupling leads to a slight increase of low-energy weight in THG without peak structure through phonon-assisted spin excitation. To fully understand the phonon-assisted spin excitation, we additionally calculate the linear susceptibility of a doped Hubbard-Holstein model, showing a spectral distribution different from that at half filling.
