Anomalous Isotope Effect in Rattling-Induced Superconductor

In order to clarify that the Cooper pair in $β$-pyrochlore oxides is mediated by anharmonic oscillation of guest atom, i.e., rattling, we propose an experiment to detect anomalous isotope effect. In the formula of $T_{\rm c} \propto M^{-η}$, where $T_{\rm c}$ is superconducting transition temperature and $M$ denotes mass of the oscillator, it is found that the exponent $η$ is increased with the increase of anharmonicity of a potential for the guest atom. We predict that $η$ becomes larger than 1/2 in rattling-induced superconductor, in sharp contrast to $η=1/2$ for weak-coupling superconductivity due to harmonic phonons and $η<1/2$ for strong-coupling superconductivity with the inclusion of the effect of Coulomb interaction.

Electric Dipolar Susceptibility of the Anderson-Holstein Model

The temperature dependence of electric dipolar susceptibility χ_P is discussed on the basis of the Anderson-Holstein model with the use of a numerical renormalization group (NRG) technique. Note that P is related with phonon Green's function D. In order to obtain correct temperature dependence of P at low temperatures, we propose a method to evaluate P through the Dyson equation from charge susceptibility χ_c calculated by the NRG, in contrast to the direct NRG calculation of D. We find that the irreducible charge susceptibility estimated from χ_c agree with the perturbation calculation, suggesting that our method works well.

Electric Dipolar Kondo Effect Emerging from Vibrating Magnetic Ion

When a magnetic ion vibrates in a metal, it inevitably introduces a new channel of hybridization with conduction electrons and in general, the vibrating ion induces electric dipole moment. In such a situation, we find that magnetic and non-magnetic Kondo effects alternatively occur due to the screening of spin moment and electric dipole moment of vibrating ion. In particular, electric dipolar two-channel Kondo effect is found to occur for weak Coulomb interaction. We also show that magnetically robust heavy-electron state appears near the fixed point of electric dipolar two-channel Kondo effect. We believe that the {\it vibrating} magnetic ion opens a new door in the Kondo physics.

Heavy-Electron Formation and Bipolaronic Transition in the Anharmonic Holstein Model

The emergence of the bipolaronic phase and the formation of the heavy-electron state in the anharmonic Holstein model are investigated using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the exact diagonalization method. For a weak anharmonicity, it is confirmed that the first-order polaron-bipolaron transition occurs from the observation of a discontinuity in the behavior of several physical quantities. When the anharmonicity is gradually increased, the polaron-bipolaron transition temperature is reduced as well as the critical values of the electron-phonon coupling constant for polaron-bipolaron transition. For a strong anharmonicity, the polaron-bipolaron transition eventually changes to a crossover behavior. The effect of anharmonicity on the formation of the heavy-electron state near the polaron-bipolaron transition and the crossover region is discussed in detail.

Strong-Coupling Theory of Rattling-Induced Superconductivity

In order to clarify the mechanism of the enhancement of superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ due to anharmonic local oscillation of a guest ion in a cage composed of host atoms, i.e., {\it rattling}, we analyze the anharmonic Holstein model by applying the Migdal-Eliashberg theory. From the evaluation of the normal-state electron-phonon coupling constant, it is found that the strong coupling state is developed, when the bottom of a potential for the guest ion becomes wide and flat. Then, $T_{\rm c}$ is enhanced with the increase of the anharmonicity in the potential, although $T_{\rm c}$ is rather decreased when the potential becomes a double-well type due to very strong anharmonicity. From these results, we propose a scenario of anharmonicity-controlled strong-coupling tendency for superconductivity induced by rattling. We briefly discuss possible relevance of the present scenario with superconductivity in $β$-pyrochlore oxides.

Electron Mass Enhancement due to Anharmonic Local Phonons

In order to understand how electron effective mass is enhanced by anharmonic local oscillation of an atom in a cage composed of other atoms, i.e., {\it rattling}, we analyze anharmonic Holstein model by using a Green's function method. Due to the evaluation of an electron mass enhancement factor $Z$, we find that $Z$ becomes maximum when zero-point energy is comparable with potential height at which the amplitude of oscillation is rapidly enlarged. Cooperation of such quantum and rattling effects is considered to be a key issue to explain the electron mass enhancement in electron-rattling systems.

Magnetic behavior of curium dioxide with non-magnetic ground state

In order to understand magnetic behavior observed in CmO$_2$ with non-magnetic ground state, we numerically evaluate magnetic susceptibility on the basis of a seven-orbital Anderson model with spin-orbit coupling. Naively we do not expect magnetic behavior in CmO$_2$, since Cm is considered to be tetravalent ion with six $5f$ electrons and the ground state is characterized by $J$=0, where $J$ is total angular momentum. However, there exists magnetic excited state and the excitation energy is smaller than the value of the Landé interval rule due to the effect of crystalline electric field potential. Then, we open a way to explain magnetic behavior in CmO$_2$.

Construction of a Microscopic Model for Yb and Tm Compounds on the Basis of a $\mib{j}$-$\mib{j}$ Coupling Scheme

We provide a prescription to construct a microscopic model for heavy lanthanide systems such as Yb and Tm compounds by exploiting a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. Here we consider a situation with a large spin-orbit coupling, in which $j$=5/2 sextet is fully occupied, while $j$=7/2 octet is partially occupied, where $j$ denotes total angular momentum. We evaluate crystalline electric field potentials and Coulomb interactions among the states of the $j$=7/2 octet to construct a local Hamiltonian in the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. Then, it is found that the local $f$-electron states composed of the $j$=7/2 octet agree quite well with those of seven $f$ orbitals even for a realistic value of the spin-orbit coupling. As an example of the application of the present model, we discuss low-temperature multipole states of Yb- and Tm-based filled skutterudites by analyzing multipole susceptibility of the Anderson model in the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme with the use of a numerical renormalization group technique. From the comparison with the numerical results of the seven-orbital Anderson model, it is concluded that the multipole state is also well reproduced by the $j$-$j$ coupling model, even when we include the hybridization between conduction and $f$ electrons for the realistic value of the spin-orbit coupling. Finally, we briefly discuss future applications of the present prescription for theoretical research on heavy lanthanide compounds.

Weak-Coupling Theory for Multiband Superconductivity Induced by Jahn-Teller Phonons

Emergence of superconductivity in a two-band system coupled with breathing and Jahn-Teller phonons is discussed in a weak-coupling limit. With the use of a standard quantum mechanical procedure, the phonon-mediated attraction is derived. From the analysis of the model including such attraction, a BCS-like formula for a superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ is obtained. When only the breathing phonon is considered, $T_{\rm c}$ is the same as that of the one-band model. On the other hand, when Jahn-Teller phonons are active, $T_{\rm c}$ is significantly enhanced by the interband attraction even within the weak-coupling limit. Relevance of the present result to actual materials such as iron pnictides is briefly commented.

Double-Exchange Ferromagnetism and Orbital-Fluctuation-Induced Superconductivity in Cubic Uranium Compounds

A double-exchange mechanism for the emergence of ferromagnetism in cubic uranium compounds is proposed on the basis of a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. The idea is {\it orbital-dependent duality} of $5f$ electrons concerning itinerant $Γ_8^-$ and localized $Γ_7^-$ states in the cubic structure. Since orbital degree of freedom is still active in the ferromagnetic phase, orbital-related quantum critical phenomenon is expected to appear. In fact, odd-parity p-wave pairing compatible with ferromagnetism is found in the vicinity of an orbital ordered phase. Furthermore, even-parity d-wave pairing with significant odd-frequency components is obtained. A possibility to observe such exotic superconductivity in manganites is also discussed briefly.

Microscopic analysis of multipole susceptibility of actinide dioxides: A scenario of multipole ordering in AmO$_2$

By evaluating multipole susceptibility of a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model with the use of a numerical renormalization group method, we discuss possible multipole states of actinide dioxides at low temperatures. In particular, here we point out a possible scenario for multipole ordering in americium dioxide. For Am$^{4+}$ ion with five $5f$ electrons, it is considered that the ground state is $Γ_7^{-}$ doublet and the first excited state is $Γ_8^{-}$ quartet, but we remark that the $f^5$ ground state is easily converted due to the competition between spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb interactions. Then, we find that the $Γ_8^-$ quartet can be the ground state of AmO$_2$ even for the same crystalline electric field potential. In the case of $Γ_8^-$ quartet ground state, the numerical results suggest that high-order multipoles such as quadrupole and octupole can be relevant to AmO$_2$.

Inverse Isotope Effect on Kondo Temperature in Electron-Rattling System

In an electron system coupled with anharmonic phonons, i.e., {\it rattling}, inverse isotope effect on the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ is found to occur by the numerical evaluation of the Sommerfeld constant $γ$ of the Anderson-Holstein model. For the anharmonic potential of an oscillator with mass $M$ in which large $γ$ has been found to be almost independent of an applied magnetic field, $γ$ is significantly suppressed when $M$ is increased, i.e., $T_{\rm K}$ is enhanced due to the relation of $γ$$\sim$$T_{\rm K}^{-1}$ in the Kondo problem, leading to the inverse isotope effect on $T_{\rm K}$. Since this phenomenon does not occur for harmonic phonons, it can be a key experiment to prove the relevance of rattling to magnetically robust heavy electron state.

Effect of Rattling Phonons on Sommerfeld Constant

By employing a numerical renormalization group technique, we evaluate electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ of the Anderson model coupled with local anharmonic phonons for the oscillation of a caged atom. For the rattling-type cage potential with a flat and wide region in the bottom, we find that phonon-mediated attraction is largely enhanced. When the potential shape is deformed from the rattling type, there occurs a cancellation between Coulomb repulsion and the phonon-mediated attraction. In such a situation, spin and charge fluctuations are comparable to each other, leading to the realization of exotic electron-phonon complex state with large and magnetically robust $γ$.

Multipole as $f$-Electron Spin-Charge Density in Filled Skutterudites

It is shown that $f$-electron multipole is naturally defined as spin-charge one-electron density operator in the second-quantized form with the use of tensor operator on the analogy of multipole expansion of electromagnetic potential from charge distribution in electromagnetism. Due to this definition of multipole, it is possible to determine multipole state from a microscopic viewpoint on the basis of the standard linear response theory for multipole susceptibility. In order to discuss multipole properties of filled skutterudites, we analyze a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model by employing a numerical renormalization group method. We show our results on possible multipole states of filled skutterudite compounds.

Antiferro-quadrupole state of orbital-degenerate Kondo lattice model with f^2 configuration

To clarify a key role of $f$ orbitals in the emergence of antiferro-quadrupole structure in PrPb$_{3}$, we investigate the ground-state property of an orbital-degenerate Kondo lattice model by numerical diagonalization techniques. In PrPb$_{3}$, Pr$^{3+}$ has a $4f^{2}$ configuration and the crystalline-electric-field ground state is a non-Kramers doublet $Γ_{3}$. In a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, the $Γ_{3}$ state is described by two local singlets, each of which consists of two $f$ electrons with one in $Γ_{7}$ and another in $Γ_{8}$ orbitals. Since in a cubic structure, $Γ_{7}$ has localized nature, while $Γ_{8}$ orbitals are rather itinerant, we propose the orbital-degenerate Kondo lattice model for an effective Hamiltonian of PrPb$_{3}$. We show that an antiferro-orbital state is favored by the so-called double-exchange mechanism which is characteristic of multi-orbital systems.

Multipole State of Heavy Lanthanide Filled Skutterudites

We discuss multipole properties of filled skutterudites containing heavy lanthanide Ln from a microscopic viewpoint on the basis of a seven-orbital Anderson model. For Ln=Gd, in contrast to naive expectation, quadrupole moments remain in addition to main dipole ones. For Ln=Ho, we find an exotic state governed by octupole moment. For Ln=Tb and Tm, no significant multipole moments appear at low temperatures, while for Ln=Dy, Er, and Yb, dipole and higher-order multipoles are dominant. We briefly discuss possible relevance of these multipole states with actual materials.

Enhanced Kondo Effect in an Electron System Dynamically Coupled with Local Optical Phonon

We discuss Kondo behavior of a conduction electron system coupled with local optical phonon by analyzing the Anderson-Holstein model with the use of a numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. There appear three typical regions due to the balance between Coulomb interaction $U_{\rm ee}$ and phonon-mediated attraction $U_{\rm ph}$. For $U_{\rm ee}>U_{\rm ph}$, we observe the standard Kondo effect concerning spin degree of freedom. Since the Coulomb interaction is effectively reduced as $U_{\rm ee}-U_{\rm ph}$, the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ is increased when $U_{\rm ph}$ is increased. On the other hand, for $U_{\rm ee}<U_{\rm ph}$, there occurs the Kondo effect concerning charge degree of freedom, since vacant and double occupied states play roles of pseudo-spins. Note that in this case, $T_{\rm K}$ is decreased with the increase of $U_{\rm ph}$. Namely, $T_{\rm K}$ should be maximized for $U_{\rm ee} \approx U_{\rm ph}$. Then, we analyze in detail the Kondo behavior at $U_{\rm ee}=U_{\rm ph}$, which is found to be explained by the polaron Anderson model with reduced hybridization of polaron and residual repulsive interaction among polarons. By comparing the NRG results of the polaron Anderson model with those of the original Anderson-Holstein model, we clarify the Kondo behavior in the competing region of $U_{\rm ee} \approx U_{\rm ph}$.

Kondo Effect in an Electron System with Dynamical Jahn-Teller Impurity

We investigate how Kondo phenomenon occurs in the Anderson model dynamically coupled with local Jahn-Teller phonons. It is found that the total angular moment composed of electron pseudo-spin and phonon angular moments is screened by conduction electrons. Namely, phonon degrees of freedom essentially contribute to the formation of singlet ground state. A characteristic temperature of the Kondo effect due to dynamical Jahn-Teller phonons is explained by an effective $s$-$d$ Hamiltonian with anisotropic exchange interaction obtained from the Jahn-Teller-Anderson model in a non-adiabatic region.
