Multipole Susceptibility of Multiorbital Anderson Model Coupled with Jahn-Teller Phonons

In order to clarify possible multipole states of Sm-based filled skutterudite compounds, we investigate multipole susceptibility of a multiorbital Anderson model dynamically coupled with Jahn-Teller phonons by using a numerical renormalization group method. Here we take a procedure to maximize the multipole susceptibility matrix to determine the multipole state. When the electron-phonon coupling term is simply ignored, it is found that the dominant multipole state is characterized by 2u octupole for the $Γ_{67}^-$ quartet ground state, while the low-temperature phase is governed by magnetic fluctuations for the $Γ_5^-$ doublet ground state. When we include the coupling between $f$ electrons in degenerate $Γ_{67}^{-}$ ($e_{\rm u}$) orbitals and Jahn-Teller phonons with $E_{\rm g}$ symmetry, the mixed multipole state with 4u magnetic and 5u octupole moments is found to be dominant with significant 3g quadrupole fluctuations at low temperatures.

Microscopic Aspects of Multipole Properties of Filled Skutterudites

We discuss low-temperature multipole states of Nd-based filled skutterudites by analyzing a multiorbital Anderson model with the use of a numerical renormalization group method. In order to determine the multipole state, we take a procedure to maximize the multipole susceptibility matrix. Then, it is found that the dominant multipole state is characterized by the mixture of 4u magnetic and 5u octupole moments. The secondary state is specified by 2u octupole. When we further take into account the coupling between $f$ electrons in degenerate $Γ_{67}^{-}$ ($e_{\rm u}$) orbitals and dynamical Jahn-Teller phonons with $E_{\rm g}$ symmetry, quadrupole fluctuations become significant at low temperatures in the mixed multipole state with 4u magnetic and 5u octupole moments. Finally, we briefly discuss possible relevance of the present results to actual Nd-based filled skutterudite compounds.

Effective Crystalline Electric Field Potential in a j-j Coupling Scheme

We propose an effective model on the basis of a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme to describe local $f$-electron states for realistic values of Coulomb interaction $U$ and spin-orbit coupling $λ$, for future development of microscopic theory of magnetism and superconductivity in $f^n$-electron systems, where $n$ is the number of local $f$ electrons. The effective model is systematically constructed by including the effect of a crystalline electric field (CEF) potential in the perturbation expansion in terms of $1/λ$. In this paper, we collect all the terms up to the first order of $1/λ$. Solving the effective model, we show the results of the CEF states for each case of $n$=2$\sim$5 with $O_{\rm h}$ symmetry in comparison with those of the Stevens Hamiltonian for the weak CEF. In particular, we carefully discuss the CEF energy levels in an intermediate coupling region with $λ/U$ in the order of 0.1 corresponding to actual $f$-electron materials between the $LS$ and $j$-$j$ coupling schemes. Note that the relevant energy scale of $U$ is the Hund's rule interaction. It is found that the CEF energy levels in the intermediate coupling region can be quantitatively reproduced by our modified $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, when we correctly take into account the corrections in the order of $1/λ$ in addition to the CEF terms and Coulomb interactions which remain in the limit of $λ$=$\infty$. As an application of the modified $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, we discuss the CEF energy levels of filled skutterudites with $T_{\rm h}$ symmetry.

Orbital-Controlled Superconductivity in f-Electron Systems

We propose a concept of superconductivity controlled by orbital degree of freedom taking CeMIn5 (M= Co, Rh, and Ir) as typical examples. A microscopic multiorbital model for CeMIn5 is analyzed by fluctuation exchange approximation. Even though the Fermi-surface structure is unchanged, the ground state is found to change significantly among paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and d-wave superconducting phases, depending on the dominant orbital component in the band near the Fermi energy. We show that our picture naturally explains the different low-temperature properties of CeMIn5 by carefully analyzing the crystalline electric field states.

Spin-orbital gap of multiorbital antiferromagnet

In order to discuss the spin-gap formation in a multiorbital system, we analyze an e_g-orbital Hubbard model on a geometrically frustrated zigzag chain by using a density-matrix renormalization group method. Due to the appearance of a ferro-orbital arrangement, the system is regarded as a one-orbital system, while the degree of spin frustration is controlled by the spatial anisotropy of the orbital. In the region of strong spin frustration, we observe a finite energy gap between ground and first-excited states, which should be called a spin-orbital gap. The physical meaning is clarified by an effective Heisenberg spin model including correctly the effect of the orbital arrangement influenced by the spin excitation.

Effect of Hund's rule coupling on SU(4) spin-orbital system

We investigate the ground-state property of a one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model at quarter filling by numerical techniques such as the density-matrix renormalization group method and the exact diagonalization. When the Hund's rule coupling $J$ is zero, the model is SU(4) symmetric. In fact, both spin and orbital correlations have a peak at $q=π/2$, indicating an SU(4) singlet state with a four-site periodicity. On the other hand, with increasing $J$, it is found that the peak position of the orbital correlation changes to $q=π$, while that of the spin correlation remains at $q=π/2$. We briefly discuss how the SU(4) symmetry is broken by $J$.

Orbital ordering phenomena in $d$- and $f$-electron systems

In recent decades, novel magnetism of $d$- and $f$-electron compounds has been discussed very intensively both in experimental and theoretical research fields of condensed matter physics. It has been recognized that those material groups are in the same category of strongly correlated electron systems, while the low-energy physics of $d$- and $f$-electron compounds has been separately investigated rather in different manners. One of common features of both $d$- and $f$-electron systems is certainly the existence of active orbital degree of freedom, but in $f$-electron materials, due to the strong spin-orbit interaction in rare-earth and actinide ions, the physics seems to be quite different from that of $d$-electron systems. In general, when the number of internal degrees of freedom and relevant interactions is increased, it is possible to obtain rich phase diagram including large varieties of magnetic phases by using several kinds of theoretical techniques. However, we should not be simply satisfied with the reproduction of rich phase diagram. It is believed that more essential point is to seek for a simple principle penetrating complicated phenomena in common with $d$- and $f$-electron materials, which opens the door to a new stage in orbital physics. In this sense, it is considered to be an important task of this article to explain common features of magnetism in $d$- and $f$-electron systems from a microscopic viewpoint, using a key concept of orbital ordering, in addition to the review of the complex phase diagram of each material group.

Quasi-Kondo Phenomenon due to Dynamical Jahn-Teller Effect

A mechanism of non-magnetic Kondo effect is proposed on the basis of a multiorbital Anderson model coupled with dynamical Jahn-Teller (JT) phonons. An electron system coupled dynamically with JT phonons has a vibronic ground state with double degeneracy due to clockwise and anti-clockwise rotational modes with entropy of $\log 2$. When a temperature is lower than a characteristic energy to turn the rotational direction, the rotational degree of freedom is eventually suppressed and the corresponding entropy $\log 2$ is released, leading to quasi-Kondo behavior. We discuss possible relevance of this quasi-Kondo phenomenon to electronic properties of filled skutterudites.

Magnetic Susceptibility of Multiorbital Systems

Effects of orbital degeneracy on magnetic susceptibility in paramagnetic phases are investigated within a mean-field theory. Under certain crystalline electric fields, the magnetic moment consists of two independent moments, e.g., spin and orbital moments. In such a case, the magnetic susceptibility is given by the sum of two different Curie-Weiss relations, leading to deviation from the Curie-Weiss law. Such behavior may be observed in d- and f-electron systems with t_{2g} and Gamma_8 ground states, respectively. As a potential application of our theory, we attempt to explain the difference in the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibilities of UO_2 and NpO_2.

Multipole Ordering and Fluctuations in f-Electron Systems

We investigate effects of multipole moments in f-electron systems both from phenomenological and microscopic viewpoints. First, we discuss significant effects of octupole moment on the magnetic susceptibility in a paramagnetic phase. It is found that even within mean-field approximation, the magnetic susceptibility deviates from the Curie-Weiss law due to interactions between dipole and octupole moments. Next, we proceed to a microscopic theory for multipole ordering on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. After brief explanation of a method to derive multipole interactions from the $f$-electron model, we discuss several multipole ordered phases depending on lattice structure. Finally, we show our new development of the microscopic approach to the evaluation of multipole response functions. We apply fluctuation exchange approximation to the f-electron model, and evaluate multipole response functions.

Multipole correlations in low-dimensional f-electron systems

By using a density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the ground-state properties of a one-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. For $B_4^0 \ne 0$, where $B_4^0$ is a parameter to control cubic crystalline electric field effect, one orbital is itinerant, while other two are localized. Due to the competition between itinerant and localized natures, we obtain orbital ordering pattern which is sensitive to $B_4^0$, leading to a characteristic change of $Γ_{3g}$ quadrupole state into an incommensurate structure. At $B_4^0 = 0$, all the three orbitals are degenerate, but we observe a peak at $q = 0$ in $Γ_{3g}$ quadrupole correlation, indicating a ferro-orbital state, and the peak at $q = π$ in $Γ_{4u}$ dipole correlation, suggesting an antiferromagnetic state. We also discuss the effect of $Γ_{4u}$ octupole on magnetic anisotropy.

Analysis of f-p model for octupole ordering in NpO2

In order to examine the origin of octupole ordering in NpO2, we propose a microscopic model constituted of neptunium 5f and oxygen 2p orbitals. To study multipole ordering, we derive effective multipole interactions from the f-p model by using the fourth-order perturbation theory in terms of p-f hopping integrals. Analyzing the effective model numerically, we find a tendency toward Γ_{5u} antiferro-octupole ordering.

Multipole ordering in f-electron systems on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme

We investigate microscopic aspects of multipole ordering in f-electron systems with emphasis on the effect of lattice structure. For the purpose, first we construct f-electron models on three kinds of lattices, simple cubic (sc), bcc, and fcc, by including f-electron hopping through (ffσ) bonding in a tight-binding approximation on the basis of a j-j coupling scheme. Then, an effective model is derived in the strong-coupling limit for each lattice structure with the use of second-order perturbation theory with respect to (ffσ). By applying mean-field theory to such effective models, we find different types of multipole ordered state depending on the lattice structure. For the sc lattice, a Γ_{3g} antiferro-quadrupole transition occurs at a finite temperature and as further lowering temperature, we find another transition to a ferromagnetic state. For the bcc lattice, a Γ_{2u} antiferro-octupole ordering occurs first, and then, a ferromagnetic phase transition follows it. Finally, for the fcc lattice, we find a single phase transition to the longitudinal triple-q Γ_{5u} octupole ordering.

Stripe Charge Ordering in Triangular-Lattice Systems

We investigate the ground-state properties of a t2g-orbital Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at electron density 5.5 by using numerical techniques. There appear several types of paramagnetic phases, but we observe in common that one or two orbitals among three orbitals become relevant due to the effect of orbital arrangement. It is found that charge stripes stabilized by the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction consist of antiferromagnetic/ferro-orbital chains for small Hund's coupling, while there occurs stripe charge ordering with ferromagnetic/antiferro-orbital chains for large Hund's coupling.

Spin, charge, and orbital correlations in the one-dimensional t2g-orbital Hubbard model

We present the zero-temperature phase diagram of the one-dimensional t2g-orbital Hubbard model, obtained using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos techniques. Emphasis is given to the case for the electron density n=5 corresponding to five electrons per site, of relevance for some Co-based compounds. However, several other cases for electron densities between n=3 and 6 are also studied. At n=5, our results indicate a first-order transition between a paramagnetic (PM) insulator phase and a fully-polarized ferromagnetic (FM) state by tuning the Hund's coupling. The results also suggest a transition from the n=5 PM insulator phase to a metallic regime by changing the electron density, either via hole or electron doping. The behavior of the spin, charge, and orbital correlation functions in the FM and PM states are also described in the text and discussed. The robustness of these two states varying parameters suggests that they may be of relevance in more realistic higher dimensional systems as well.

Electronic structure and the Fermi surface of ThRhIn$_5$ in comparison with uranium and transuranium compounds

By using a relativistic linear augmented-plane-wave method, we clarify energy band structure and the Fermi surfaces of recently synthesized thorium compound ThRhIn$_5$. We find several cylindrical Fermi surface sheets, which are similar to those of CeTIn$_5$ (T=Ir and Co), PuTGa$_5$ (T=Co and Rh), and AmCoGa$_5$. We discuss such similarity among the compounds including rare-earth or actinide ions with different $f$ electron numbers.

Multipole Fluctuations in Filled Skutterudites

In order to clarify exotic multipole properties of filled skutterudites, we evaluate multipole susceptibility for $n$=1$\sim$5, where $n$ is the local $f$-electron number, on the basis of a multiorbital Anderson model constructed using the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. For $n$=1, magnetic fluctuations dominate over low-temperature electronic properties, while for $n$=2 and 4, electronic states are dominated by both magnetic and quadrupole fluctuations. For $n$=3 and 5, octupole fluctuations are found to be significant, depending on the crystalline electric field potential. We discuss possible relevance of the results to actual materials.

Spin-charge-orbital ordering on triangle-based lattices

We investigate the ground-state property of an e_g-orbital Hubbard model at quarter filling on a zigzag chain by exploiting the density matrix renormalization group method. When two orbitals are degenerate, the zigzag chain is decoupled to a doble-chain spin system to suppress the spin frustration due to the spatial anisotropy of the occupied orbital. On the other hand, when the level splitting is increased and the orbital anisotropy disappears, a characteristic change in the spin incommnsurability is observed due to the revival of the spin frustration.
