Finite temperature study of the axial U(1) symmetry on the lattice with overlap fermion formulation

We examine the axial U(1) symmetry near and above the finite temperature phase transition in two-flavor QCD using lattice QCD simulations. Although the axial U(1) symmetry is always violated by quantization, (i.e.) the chiral anomaly, the correlation functions may manifest effective restoration of the symmetry in the high temperature phase. We explicitly study this possibility by calculating the meson correlators as well as the Dirac operator spectral density near the critical point. Our numerical simulations are performed on a $16^3\times 8$ lattice with two flavors of dynamical quarks represented by the overlap fermion formalism. Chiral symmetry and its violation due to the axial anomaly is manifestly realized with this formulation, which is a prerequisite for the study of the effective restoration of the axial U(1) symmetry. In order to avoid discontinuity in the gauge configuration space, which occurs for the exactly chiral lattice fermions, the simulation is confined in a fixed topological sector. It induces finite volume effect, which is well described by a formula based on the Fourier transform from the $θ$-vacua. We confirm this formula at finite temperature by calculating the topological susceptibility in the quenched theory. Our two flavor simulations show degeneracy of the meson correlators and a gap in the Dirac operator spectral density, which implies that the axial U(1) symmetry is effectively restored in the chirally symmetric phase.

The neutral pion decay and the chiral anomaly on the lattice

We perform a lattice QCD calculation of the π^0\toγγtransition form factor and the associated decay width. We use a Euclidean time integral of the relevant three-point function to compute the decay amplitude for two-photon final state, which is a non-QCD state. We use the all-to-all quark propagator technique to carry out this integral as well as to include the disconnected quark diagram contributions. We execute the calculation using the overlap fermion formulation, which ensures the exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and produces the chiral anomaly through the Jacobian of the chiral transformation. We examine various sources of systematic effects except for possible discretization effect. Our final results for the form factor and the decay width reproduce the ABJ anomaly in the chiral limit and agree with the experimental measurements at the physical pion mass with a precision of a few percent.

Two-photon decay of the neutral pion in lattice QCD

We perform non-perturbative calculation of the π^0 to γγ transition form factor and the associated decay width using lattice QCD. The amplitude for two-photon final state, which is not an eigenstate of QCD, is extracted through an Euclidean time integral of the relevant three-point function. We utilize the all-to-all quark propagator technique to carry out this integral as well as to include the disconnected quark diagram contributions. The overlap fermion formulation is employed on the lattice to ensure exact chiral symmetry on the lattice. After examining various sources of systematic effects except for possible discretization effect, we obtain Γ=7.83(31)(49) eV for the pion decay width, where the first error is statistical and the second is our estimate of the systematic error.

Topological susceptibility and axial symmetry at finite temperature

We consider the simulation of finite temperature QCD with two flavors of dynamical overlap fermions in order to study the suppression of the axial U(1) symmetry breaking at the chiral phase transition point. As a preliminary study, pure gauge simulations are performed to investigate how fixing the topology affects physical quantities like the topological susceptibility, $χ_t$, at finite temperature, showing that it is possible to reconstruct known results from the fixed topology sector. First results on the degeneracy of meson correlators in the high temperature QGP sector are shown.

Lattice studies of hadron physics with disconnected quark loops

Disconnected diagrams give crucial contributions to the physics of flavor singlet hadrons and to scalar form factors of non-singlet hadrons. Naive lattice calculation of the disconnected diagrams, however, requires a huge number of fermion matrix inversions and hence a prohibitively large computational cost. In this article, we present recent studies of the flavor-singelt meson spectrum and nucleon strange quark content using the all-to-all propagator to calculate the relevant disconnected diagrams.

Finite temperature QCD at fixed Q with overlap fermions

We present some preliminary results of the project on finite temperature QCD with overlap fermions at KEK. We performed a series of simulations to assess the effects of fixing the topological sector at finite temperature and we will show the first calculations of topological susceptibility and meson masses for quenched and full QCD.

Pion form factors from lattice QCD with exact chiral symmetry

We calculate pion vector and scalar form factors in two-flavor lattice QCD and study the chiral behavior of the vector and scalar radii _{V,S}. For a direct comparison with chiral perturbation theory (ChPT), chiral symmetry is exactly preserved by employing the overlap quark action. We utilize the all-to-all quark propagator in order to calculate the scalar form factor including the contributions of disconnected diagrams. A detailed comparison with ChPT reveals that two-loop contributions are important to describe the chiral behavior of the radii in our region of the pion mass M_π\gtrsim 290 MeV. From chiral extrapolation based on two-loop ChPT, we obtain _V = 0.409(23)(37) fm^2 and _S = 0.617(79)(66) fm^2, which are consistent with phenomenological analyses.

Theoretical progress on V_us on lattice

Recent lattice studies on (semi-)leptonic kaon decays towards a precise determination of V_us are reviewed. Attention is given to recent unquenched calculations and consistency of their results with chiral perturbation theory.

Improvement of algorithms for dynamical overlap fermions

We investigate the algorithms for dynamical overlap fermions aiming at improving the performance for large-scale simulations. We look for the best combination of Hybrid Monte Carlo options and iterative quark solvers with respect to the numerical costs. Our main target is a $N_f=2$ simulation with overlap fermion on a $16^3\times 32$ lattice at lattice spacing around 0.12 fm.
