First-order superfluid-Mott insulator transition of spinor bosons in an optical lattice

We study the superfluid-Mott insulator transition of antiferromagnetic spin-1 bosons in an optical lattice described by a Bose-Hubbard model. Our variational study with the Gutzwiller-type trial wave function determines that the superfluid-Mott insulator transition is a first-order one at a part of the phase boundary curve, contrary to the spinless case. This first-order transition may be observed through an experiment, such as a Stern-Gerlach type, under a magnetic field.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing symmetry competition in the Hubbard model

To shed light into the pairing mechanism of possible spin-triplet superconductors (TMTSF)$_2$X and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we study the competition among various spin singlet and triplet pairing channels in the Hubbard model by calculating the pairing interaction vertex using the ground state quantum Monte Carlo technique. We model (TMTSF)$_2$X by a quarter-filled quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D) Hubbard model, and the $γ$ band of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by a two dimensional (2D) Hubbard model with a band filling of $\sim 4/3$. For the quasi-1D system, we find that triplet $f$-wave pairing not only dominates over triplet p-wave in agreement with the spin fluctuation theory, but also looks unexpectedly competitive against d-wave. For the 2D system, although the results suggest presence of attractive interaction in the triplet pairing channels, the d-wave pairing interaction is found to be larger than those of the triplet channels.

Possibility of superconductivity in the repulsive Hubbard model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Possibility of superconductivity from electron repulsion in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, which has a spin gap at half filling, is explored with the repulsive Hubbard model in the fluctuation-exchange approximation. We find that, while superconductivity is not favored around the half-filling, superconductivity is favored around the quarter-filling. Our results suggest that the Fermi surface nesting is more important than the spin dimerization for superconductivity.

Singlet superconductivity phase in carbon nanotubes

We discuss phase diagrams obtained by calculating temperature dependent correlation functions for superconductivity and density waves for a single (5,0) carbon nanotube (CN). We use one-loop renormalization group method within logarithmic accuracy. In this system we must specify scattering channels in terms of momentum along the circumferential direction as well as the axis direction, since (5,0) CN has two degenerate bands crossing the Fermi energy with circumferential momenta. We find singlet-superconducting phase with $5\hbar$ circumferential angular momentum. Critical exponents for each correlation functions are also calculated.

Superconductivity of MI(MII0.5, Si0.5)2 (MI=Sr and Ba, MII=Al and Ga), ternary silicides with the AlB2-type structure

Ternary silicides MI(MII0.5, Si0.5)2 (MI=Sr and Ba, MII=Al and Ga) were prepared by Ar arc melting. Powder X-ray diffraction indicates that they have the AlB2-type structure, in which Si and MII atoms are arranged in honeycomb layers and MI atoms are intercalated between them. Electrical resistivity and dc magnetization measurements revealed that Sr(Al0.5, Si0.5)2 is superconductive, with a critical temperature for superconductivity (TC) of 4.2 K, while Ba(Al0.5, Si0.5)2 is not at temperatures ranging above 2.0 K. Sr(Ga0.5, Si0.5)2 and Ba(Ga0.5, Si0.5)2 are also superconductors, with TCs of 5.1 and 3.3 K, respectively.

Superfluid-Mott Insulator Transition of Spin-1 Bosons in an Optical Lattice

We have studied superfluid-Mott insulating transition of spin-1 bosons interacting antiferromagnetically in an optical lattice. We have obtained the zero-temperature phase diagram by a mean-field approximation and have found that the superfluid phase is to be a polar state as a usual trapped spin-1 Bose gas. More interestingly, we have found that the Mott-insulating phase is strongly stabilized only when the number of atoms per site is even.

Hybridization-induced superconductivity from the electron repulsion on a tetramer lattice having a disconnected Fermi surface

Plaquette lattices with each unit cell containing multiple atoms are good candidates for disconnected Fermi surfaces, which are shown by Kuroki and Arita to be favorable for spin-flucutation mediated superconductivity from electron repulsion. Here we find an interesting example in a tetramer lattice where the structure within each unit cell dominates the nodal structure of the gap function. We trace its reason to the way in which a Cooper pair is formed across the hybridized molecular orbitals, where we still end up with a T_c much higher than usual.

High temperature superconductivity in dimer array systems

Superconductivity in the Hubbard model is studied on a series of lattices in which dimers are coupled in various types of arrays. Using fluctuation exchange method and solving the linearized Eliashberg equation, the transition temperature $T_c$ of these systems is estimated to be much higher than that of the Hubbard model on a simple square lattice, which is a model for the high $T_c$ cuprates. We conclude that these `dimer array' systems can generally exhibit superconductivity with very high $T_c$. Not only $d$-electron systems, but also $p$-electron systems may provide various stages for realizing the present mechanism.

Orbifold quantum cohomology of the classifying space of a finite group

We work through, in detail, the orbifold quantum cohomology, with gravitational descendants, of the stack BG, the point modulo trivial action of a finite group G. We provide a simple description of algebraic structures on the state space of this theory. As a consequence, we find that multiple copies of commuting Virasoro algebras appear in this theory which completely determine the correlators of the theory.

Superconductivity in quantum-dot superlattices composed of quantum wire networks

Based on calculations using the local density approximation, we propose quantum wire networks with square and plaquette type lattice structures that form quantum dot superlattices. These artificial structures are well described by the Hubbard model. Numerical analysis reveals a superconducting ground state with transition temperatures $T_c$ of up to 90 mK for the plaquette, which is more than double the value of 40 mK for the square lattice type and is sufficiently high to allow for the experimental observation of superconductivity.

Conductance renormalization and conductivity of a multi-subband Tomonaga-Luttinger model

We studied the conductance renormalization and conductivity of multi-subband Tomonaga-Luttinger models with inter-subband interactions. We found that, as in single-band systems, the conductance of a multi-subband system with an arbitrary number of subbands is not renormalized due to interaction between electrons. We derived a formula for the conductivity in multi-subband models. We applied it to a simplified case and found that inter-subband interaction enhances the conductivity, which is contrary to the intra-subband repulsive interaction, and that the conductivity is further enhanced for a larger number of subbands.

d_{x^2-y^2}- vs. d_{xy}- like pairings in organic superconductors κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 X

Pairing symmetry in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X is re-examined by applying fluctuation exchange method to the Hubbard model on the original four band lattice for the first time. Our study is motivated by the discrepancy between a recent thermal conductivity/tunneling spectroscopy experiments and the previous theories based on the effective single or two band model. In contrast to the previous theories, we find that $d_{x^2-y^2}$-like pairing dominates over $d_{xy}$ in agreement with recent experiments. Our study provides a general lesson that even if the Fermi surface seems to be reproduced by an effective model, the pairing symmetry can be different from that of the original system.

Flat-band ferromagnetism in quantum dot superlattices

Possibility of flat-band ferromagnetism in quantum dot arrays is theoretically discussed. By using a quantum dot as a building block, quantum dot superlattices are possible. We consider dot arrays on Lieb and kagome lattices known to exhibit flat band ferromagnetism. By performing an exact diagonalization of the Hubbard Hamiltonian, we calculate the energy difference between the ferromagnetic ground state and the paramagnetic excited state, and discuss the stability of the ferromagnetism against the second nearest neighbor transfer. We calculate the dot-size dependence of the energy difference in a dot model and estimate the transition temperature of the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition which is found to be accessible within the present fabrication technology. We point out advantages of semiconductor ferromagnets and suggest other interesting possibilities of electronic properties in quantum dot superlattices.

Magnetic field effects on two-dimensional Kagome lattices

Magnetic field effects on single-particle energy bands (Hofstadter butterfly), Hall conductance, flat-band ferromagnetism, and magnetoresistance of two-dimensional Kagome lattices are studied. The flat-band ferromagnetism is shown to be broken as the flat-band has finite dispersion in the magnetic field. A metal-insulator transition induced by the magnetic field (giant negative magnetoresistance) is predicted. In the half-filled flat band, the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition and the metal-insulator one occur simultaneously at a magnetic field for strongly interacting electrons. All of the important magnetic fields effects should be observable in mesoscopic systems such as quantum dot superlattices.

Stable Spin Maps, Gromov-Witten Invariants, and Quantum Cohomology

We introduce the stack of r-spin maps. These are stable maps into a variety V from n-pointed algebraic curves of genus g, with the additional data of an r-spin structure on the curve. We prove that this stack is a Deligne-Mumford stack, and we define analogs of the Gromov-Witten classes associated to these spaces. We show that these classes yield a cohomological field theory (CohFT) that is the tensor product of the CohFT associated to the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of V and the r-spin CohFT. When r=2, our construction gives the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of V. Restricting to genus zero, we obtain the notion of an r-spin quantum cohomology of V, whose Frobenius structure is isomorphic to the tensor product of the Frobenius manifolds corresponding to the quantum cohomology of V and the r-th Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy (or, equivalently, the A_{r-1} singularity). We also prove a generalization of the descent property which, in particular, explains the appearance of the psi-classes in the definition of gravitational descendants. Finally, we compute the small phase space potential function when r=3 and V=CP^1.

Gravitational Descendants and the Moduli Space of Higher Spin Curves

The purpose of this note is introduce a new axiom (called the Descent Axiom) in the theory of $r$-spin cohomological field theories. This axiom explains the origin of gravitational descendants in this theory. Furthermore, the Descent Axiom immediately implies the Vanishing Axiom, explicating the latter (which has no a priori analog in the theory of Gromov-Witten invariants), in terms of the multiplicativity of the virtual class. We prove that the Descent Axiom holds in the convex case, and consequently in genus zero.

Moduli Spaces of Higher Spin Curves and Integrable Hierarchies

We prove the genus zero part of the generalized Witten conjecture relating moduli spaces of spin curves to Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. That is, we show that intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable r-spin curves assemble into a generating function which yields a solution of the semiclassical limit of the KdV_r equations. We formulate axioms for a cohomology class on this moduli space which allow one to construct a cohomological field theory of rank $r-1$ in all genera. In genus zero it produces a Frobenius manifold which is isomorphic to the Frobenius manifold structure on the base of the versal deformation of the A_{r-1} singularity. We prove analogs of the puncture, dilaton, and topological recursion relations by drawing an analogy with the construction of Gromov-Witten invariants and quantum cohomology.

Tensor products of Frobenius manifolds and moduli spaces of higher spin curves

We review progress on the generalized Witten conjecture and some of its major ingredients. This conjecture states that certain intersection numbers on the moduli space of higher spin curves assemble into the logarithm of the tau function of a semiclassical limit of the r-th Gelfand-Dickey (or KdV_r) hierarchy. Additionally, we prove that tensor products of the Frobenius manifolds associated to such hierarchies admit a geometric interpretation in terms of moduli spaces of higher spin structures. We also elaborate upon the analogy to Gromov-Witten invariants of a smooth, projective variety.
