A Change of Coordinates on the Large Phase Space of Quantum Cohomology

The Gromov-Witten invariants of a smooth, projective variety $V$, when twisted by the tautological classes on the moduli space of stable maps, give rise to a family of cohomological field theories and endow the base of the family with coordinates. We prove that the potential functions associated to the tautological $ψ$ classes (the large phase space) and the $κ$ classes are related by a change of coordinates which generalizes a change of basis on the ring of symmetric functions. Our result is a generalization of the work of Manin--Zograf who studied the case where $V$ is a point. We utilize this change of variables to derive the topological recursion relations associated to the $κ$ classes from those associated to the $ψ$ classes.

Intersection Numbers on the Moduli Spaces of Stable Maps in Genus 0

Let $V$ be a smooth, projective, convex variety. We define tautological $ψ$ and $κ$ classes on the moduli space of stable maps $\M_{0,n}(V)$, give a (graphical) presentation for these classes in terms of boundary strata, derive differential equations for the generating functions of the Gromov-Witten invariants of $V$ twisted by these tautological classes, and prove that these intersection numbers are completely determined by the Gromov-Witten invariants of $V$. This results in families of Frobenius manifold structures on the cohomology ring of $V$ which includes the quantum cohomology as a special case.

Pairing correlation in the two- and three-leg Hubbard ladders --- Renormalization and quantum Monte Carlo studies

In order to shed light whether the `even-odd conjecture' (even numbers of legs will superconduct accompanied by a spin gap while odd ones do not) for correlated electrons in ladder systems, the pairing correlation is studied for the Hubbard model on a two- and three-leg ladders. We have employed both the weak-coupling renormalization group and the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for strong interactions. For the two-leg Hubbard ladder, a systematic QMC (with a controlled level spacings) has detected an enhanced pairing correlation, which is consistent with the weak-coupling prediction. We also calculate the correlation functions in the three-leg Hubbard ladder and show that the weak-coupling study predicts the dominant superconductivity, which refutes the naive even-odd conjecture. A crucial point is a spin gap for only some of the multiple spin modes is enough to make the ladder superconduct with a pairing symmetry (d-like here) compatible with the gapped mode. A QMC study for the three-leg ladder endorses the enhanced pairing correlation.

Intersection Numbers and Rank One Cohomological Field Theories in Genus One

We obtain a simple, recursive presentation of the tautological (κ, ψ, and λ) classes on the moduli space of curves in genus zero and one in terms of boundary strata (graphs). We derive differential equations for the generating functions for their intersection numbers which allow us to prove a simple relationship between the genus zero and genus one potentials. As an application, we describe the moduli space of normalized, even, rank one cohomological field theories in genus one in coordinates which are additive under taking tensor products. Our results simplify and generalize those of Kaufmann, Manin, and Zagier.

Superconductivity in the three-leg Hubbard ladder: a Quantum Monte Carlo study

Quantum Monte Carlo method is used to look into the superconductivity in the three-leg Hubbard ladder. The enhanced correlation for the pairing across the central and edge chains, which has been predicted in the weak-coupling renormalization as an effect of coexistence of gapful and gapless spin modes, is here shown to persist for intermediate interaction strengths.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the pairing correlation in the Hubbard ladder

An extensive Quantum Monte Carlo calculation is performed for the two-leg Hubbard ladder model to clarify whether the singlet pairing correlation decays slowly, which is predicted from the weak-coupling theory but controversial from numerical studies. Our result suggests that the discreteness of energy levels in finite systems affects the correlation enormously, where the enhanced pairing correlation is indeed detected if we make the energy levels of the bonding and anti-bonding bands lie close to each other at the Fermi level to mimic the thermodynamic limit.

Correlation functions in the three-chain Hubbard ladder

In order to check whether odd-numbered Tomonaga-Luttinger ladders are dominated by antiferromagnetic correlations associated with gapless spin excitations, correlation functions of the doped three-chain Hubbard model are obtained with the bosonization at the renormalization-group fixed point. The correlation of the singlet superconducting pairing across the central and edge chains is found to be dominant, reflecting two gapful spin modes, while the intra-edge spin density wave correlation, reflecting the gapless mode, is only subdominant. This implies that, when there are multiple spin modes, a dominant superconductivity can arise from the presence of {\it some} spin gap(s) despite the coexistence of power-law correlated spins.

The universal Vassiliev invariant for the Lie superalgebra gl(1|1)

We compute the universal weight system for Vassiliev invariants coming from the Lie superalgebra gl(1|1) applying the construction of \cite{YB}. This weight system is a function from the space of chord diagrams to the center $Z$ of the universal enveloping algebra of gl(1|1), and we find a combinatorial expression for it in terms of the standard generators of $Z$. The resulting knot invariants generalize the Alexander-Conway polynomial.

Homotopy Gerstenhaber algebras and topological field theory

We prove that the BRST complex of a topological conformal field theory is a homotopy Gerstenhaber algebra, as conjectured by Lian and Zuckerman in 1992. We also suggest a refinement of the original conjecture for topological vertex operator algebras. We illustrate the usefulness of our main tools, operads and "string vertices" by obtaining new results on Vassiliev invariants of knots and double loop spaces.

Generation of spin-polarized currents in Zeeman-split Tomonaga-Luttinger models

In a magnetic field an interacting electron gas in one dimension may be described as a Tomonaga-Luttinger model comprising two components with different Fermi velocities due to the Zeeman splitting. This destroys the spin-charge separation, and even the quantities such as the density-density correlation involve spin and charge critical exponents (K). Specifically, the ratio of the up-spin and down-spin conductivities in a dirty system diverges at low temperatures like an inverse power of the temperature, $T^{-(K_{\uparrow}-K_{\downarrow})}$, resulting in a spin-polarized current. In finite, clean systems the conductance becomes different for up- and down-spins as another manifestation of the electron-electron interaction.

Homology of moduli spaces of curves and commutative homotopy algebras

We propose an explicit relation between the cohomology of compactified and noncompactified moduli spaces of algebraic curves with punctures. This relationship generalizes one between commutative algebras and Lie algebras proposed by Lazard, Kontsevich and Ginzburg and Kapranov. More explicitly, we show that the cohomology of one moduli space is the graph complex decorated with the cohomology of the other, which in its turn generalizes Getzler's result for the genus zero moduli. We also show that a certain class of algebras over the chain operad of compactified moduli spaces has a natural structure of a commutative homotopy algebra. This may be regarded as a lifting of the dot product of Lian-Zuckerman's BV algebra structure to the cochain level, thus complementing the results of an earlier paper hep-th/9307114 of the authors regarding the BV bracket.

The Cohomology of Algebras over Moduli Spaces

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the cohomology of various algebras over an operad of moduli spaces including the cohomology of conformal field theories (CFT's) and vertex operator algebras (VOA's). This cohomology theory produces a number of invariants of CFT's and VOA's, one of which is the space of their infinitesimal deformations.

Generalized Classical BRST Cohomology and Reduction of Poisson Manifolds

In this paper, we formulate a generalization of the classical BRST construction which applies to the case of the reduction of a poisson manifold by a submanifold. In the case of symplectic reduction, our procedure generalizes the usual classical BRST construction which only applies to symplectic reduction of a symplectic manifold by a coisotropic submanifold, \ie\ the case of reducible ``first class'' constraints. In particular, our procedure yields a method to deal with ``second-class'' constraints. We construct the BRST complex and compute its cohomology. BRST cohomology vanishes for negative dimension and is isomorphic as a poisson algebra to the algebra of smooth functions on the reduced poisson manifold in zero dimension. We then show that in the general case of reduction of poisson manifolds, BRST cohomology cannot be identified with the cohomology of vertical differential forms.
