Re-emergence of rapidity scale uncertainty in SCET

The artificial separation of a full-theory mode into distinct collinear and soft modes in SCET leads to divergent integrals over rapidity, which are not present in the full theory. Rapidity divergence introduces an additional scale into the problem, giving rise to its own renormalization group with respect to this new scale. Two contradicting claims exist in the literature concerning rapidity scale uncertainty. One camp has shown that the results of perturbative calculations depend on the precise choice of rapidity scale. The other has derived an all-order factorization formula with no dependence on rapidity scale, by using a form of analytic regulator to regulate rapidity divergences. We deliver a simple resolution to this controversy by deriving an alternative form of the all-order factorization formula with an analytic regulator that, despite being formally rapidity scale independent, reveals how rapidity scale dependence arises when it is truncated at a finite order in perturbation theory. With our results, one can continue to take advantage of the technical ease and simplicity of the analytic regulator approach while correctly taking into account rapidity scale dependence. As an application, we update our earlier study of WW production with jet-veto by including rapidity scale uncertainty. While the central values of the predictions are unchanged, the scale uncertainties are increased and consistency between the NLL and NNLL calculations are improved.

Prospect for measuring the CP phase in the $hττ$ coupling at the LHC

The search for a new source of CP violation is one of the most important endeavors in particle physics. A particularly interesting way to perform this search is to probe the CP phase in the $hττ$ coupling, as the phase is currently completely unconstrained by all existing data. Recently, a novel variable $Θ$ was proposed for measuring the CP phase in the $hττ$ coupling through the $τ^\pm \to π^\pm π^0 ν$ decay mode. We examine two crucial questions that the real LHC detectors must face, namely, the issue of neutrino reconstruction and the effects of finite detector resolution. For the former, we find strong evidence that the collinear approximation is the best for the $Θ$ variable. For the latter, we find that the angular resolution is actually not an issue even though the reconstruction of $Θ$ requires resolving the highly collimated $π^\pm$'s and $π^0$'s from the $τ$ decays. Instead, we find that it is the missing transverse energy resolution that significantly limits the LHC reach for measuring the CP phase via $Θ$. With the current missing energy resolution, we find that with $\sim 1000\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$ the CP phase hypotheses $Δ= 0^\circ$ (the standard model value) and $Δ= 90^\circ$ can be distinguished, at most, at the 95\% confidence level.

An Explanation of the WW Excess at the LHC by Jet-Veto Resummation

The WW production cross section measured at the LHC has been consistently exhibiting a mild excess beyond the SM prediction, in both ATLAS and CMS at both 7-TeV and 8-TeV runs. We provide an explanation of the excess in terms of resummation of large logarithms that arise from a jet-veto condition, i.e., the rejection of high-pT jets with pT > pT(veto) that is imposed in the experimental analyses to reduce backgrounds. Jet veto introduces a second mass scale pT(veto) to the problem in addition to the invariant mass of the WW pair. This gives rise to large logarithms of the ratio of the two scales that need to be resummed. Such resummation may not be properly accounted for by the Monte Carlo simulations used in the ATLAS and CMS studies. Those logarithms are also accompanied by large pi^2 terms when the standard, positive sign is chosen for the squared renormalization scale. We analytically resum the large logarithms including the pi^2 terms in the framework of soft collinear effective theory (SCET), and demonstrate that the SCET calculation not only reduces the scale uncertainties of the SM prediction significantly but also renders the theory prediction well compatible with the experiment. We find that resummation of the large logarithms and that of the pi^2 terms are both comparably important.

Measuring CP Violation in $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ at Colliders

We investigate the LHC and Higgs Factory prospects for measuring the CP phase in the Higgs-tau-tau coupling. Currently this phase can be anywhere between 0 degrees (CP even) and 90 degrees (CP odd). A new, ideal observable is identified from an analytic calculation for the $τ^\pm \to ρ^\pmν\to π^\pm π^0 ν$ channel. It is demonstrated to have promising sensitivity at the LHC and superior sensitivity at the ILC compared to previous proposals. Our observable requires the reconstruction of the internal substructure of decaying taus but does not rely on measuring the impact parameter of tau decays. It is the first proposal for such a measurement at the LHC. For the 14 TeV LHC, we estimate that about 1 ab$^{-1}$ data can discriminate CP-even versus CP-odd at the $5σ$ level. With 3 ab$^{-1}$, the CP phase should be measurable to an accuracy of $\sim 11$ degrees. At an $e^+e^-$ Higgs Factory, we project that a 250 GeV run with 1 ab$^{-1}$ luminosity can measure the phase to $\sim 4.4$ degrees accuracy.

Higgs Production Amidst the LHC Detector

We investigate the spectacular collider signatures of macroscopically displaced, neutral particles that decay to Higgs bosons and missing energy. We show that such long-lived particles arise naturally in a very minimal extension of the Standard Model with only two new fermions with electroweak interactions. The lifetime of the long-lived neutral particles can range from 10^{-2} mm to 10^6 mm. In some regions of the parameter space, the exotic signals would have already been selected by the ATLAS and CMS triggers in their 7 and 8 TeV runs, hence hiding in the existing data. We also discuss the possibility of explaining the mild anomalies observed in the diphoton Higgs channel and the WW production at the LHC.

Gyroscopic Inflation

We propose a new framework for multi-field inflation in which a nearly constant potential energy is maintained during inflation before decreasing rapidly, in a manner analogous to a classical top spinning upright for a long time before falling down. We provide the simplest realization of such dynamics as a well-controlled, weakly-coupled effective field theory with a global shift symmetry. Nonperturbative quantum gravitational effects, which break global symmetries, are suppressed in this model. Primordial gravitational waves may be within experimental reach.

Effective Field Theory for a Heavy Majorana Fermion

We formulate an effective theory for systems containing a heavy Majorana fermion, such as bound states of a long-lived gluino. This "Majorana HQET" has the same degrees of freedom as the well-studied Dirac HQET. It respects an emergent U(1) symmetry despite the fundamental absence of a U(1) for Majorana fermions. Reparameterization invariance works identically in the two HQETs. Remarkably, while a Dirac HQET may or may not be charge conjugation symmetric, a charge conjugation symmetry emerges in all Majorana HQETs, potentially offering low energy probes to distinguish the two theories.

A unified, flavor symmetric explanation for the t-tbar asymmetry and Wjj excess at CDF

We present a simple, perturbative, and renormalizable model with a flavor symmetry which can explain both the t-tbar forward-backward asymmetry and the bump feature present in the dijet mass distribution of the W+jj sample in the range 120-160 GeV that was recently reported by the CDF collaboration. The flavor symmetry not only ensures the flavor/CP safety of the model, but also relates the two anomalies unambiguously. It predicts a comparable forward-backward asymmetry in c-cbar. The forward-backward asymmetry in b-bar is, however, small. A bump in the dijet mass distribution in Z+jj sample is also predicted but with a suppressed cross-section.

Measuring Top Squark Interactions With The Standard Model Through Associated Production

A new particle's interactions can be measured at colliders, by observing its associated production with Standard Model particles. We focus on the case of a collider-stable right-handed top squark and study the LHC sensitivities to its couplings to the photon, Z, and the Higgs boson. Such measurements determine the top squark's charge, mixing angle and coupling to the electroweak symmetry breaking sector. Determining these couplings can provide strong evidence for the supersymmetric solution to the hierarchy problem. Our analysis shows that the LHC has great prospects for measuring the photon and Higgs couplings, but will require a very high luminosity to measure the Z coupling.

Simplified Models for LHC New Physics Searches

This document proposes a collection of simplified models relevant to the design of new-physics searches at the LHC and the characterization of their results. Both ATLAS and CMS have already presented some results in terms of simplified models, and we encourage them to continue and expand this effort, which supplements both signature-based results and benchmark model interpretations. A simplified model is defined by an effective Lagrangian describing the interactions of a small number of new particles. Simplified models can equally well be described by a small number of masses and cross-sections. These parameters are directly related to collider physics observables, making simplified models a particularly effective framework for evaluating searches and a useful starting point for characterizing positive signals of new physics. This document serves as an official summary of the results from the "Topologies for Early LHC Searches" workshop, held at SLAC in September of 2010, the purpose of which was to develop a set of representative models that can be used to cover all relevant phase space in experimental searches. Particular emphasis is placed on searches relevant for the first ~50-500 pb-1 of data and those motivated by supersymmetric models. This note largely summarizes material posted at http://lhcnewphysics.org/, which includes simplified model definitions, Monte Carlo material, and supporting contacts within the theory community. We also comment on future developments that may be useful as more data is gathered and analyzed by the experiments.

LHC Implications of the WIMP Miracle and Grand Unification

With the assumptions that dark matter consists of an electroweak triplet and that the gauge couplings unify at a high scale, we identify robust phenomenological trends of possible matter contents at the TeV scale. In particular, we expect new colored states within the LHC reach that can have Yukawa couplings lambda to quarks and the Higgs. We investigate the collider signatures that are characteristic of all such models by adopting the model with the simplest matter content as a benchmark. The lambda couplings are constrained by flavor/CP physics. In the largest portion of the allowed parameter space the new colored particles are stable on collider time scales, hence appearing as R-hadrons, for which there is discovery potential at the early LHC (sqrt{s}=7 TeV, 1 fb^(-1)). Flavor/CP constraints nevertheless do allow a sizable range of lambda where the new colored particles decay promptly, providing a new Higgs production channel with a cross-section governed by the strong interaction. Studying the case of h to WW, we show that it is possible for the Higgs production from this new channel to be discovered before that from the Standard Model at the LHC.

Viable Gravity-Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

We present a complete, viable model of gravity-mediated supersymmetry breaking that is safe from all flavor constraints. The central new idea is to employ a supersymmetry breaking sector without singlets, but with D-terms comparable to F-terms, causing supersymmetry breaking to be dominantly communicated through U(1)_R-symmetric operators. We construct a visible sector that is an extension of the MSSM where an \emph{accidental} U(1)_R symmetry emerges naturally. Gauginos acquire Dirac masses from gravity-mediated D-terms, and tiny Majorana masses from anomaly-mediated contributions. Contributions to soft breaking scalar (mass)^2 arise from flavor-arbitrary gravity-induced F-terms plus one-loop finite flavor-blind contributions from Dirac gaugino masses. Renormalization group evolution of the gluino causes it to naturally increase nearly an order of magnitude larger than the squark masses. This hierarchy, combined with an accidentially U(1)_R-symmetric visible sector, nearly eliminates all flavor violation constraints on the model. If we also freely tune couplings and phases within the modest range 0.1-1, while maintaining nearly flavor-anarchic Planck-suppression contributions, we find our model to be safe from Delta m_K, epsilon_K, and mu -> e lepton flavor violation. Dangerous U(1)_R-violating Kähler operators in the Higgs sector are eliminated through a new gauged U(1)_X symmetry that is spontaneously broken with electroweak symmetry breaking. Kinetic mixing between U(1)_X and U(1)_Y is present with loop-suppressed (but log-enhanced) size epsilon. The Z' associated with this U(1)_X has very peculiar couplings -- it has order one strength to Higgs doublets and approximately epsilon strength to hypercharge. The Z' could be remarkably light and yet have escaped direct and indirect detection.

Vectorlike Confinement at the LHC

We argue for the plausibility of a broad class of vectorlike confining gauge theories at the TeV scale which interact with the Standard Model predominantly via gauge interactions. These theories have a rich phenomenology at the LHC if confinement occurs at the TeV scale, while ensuring negligible impact on precision electroweak and flavor observables. Spin-1 bound states can be resonantly produced via their mixing with Standard Model gauge bosons. The resonances promptly decay to pseudo-Goldstone bosons, some of which promptly decay to a pair of Standard Model gauge bosons, while others are charged and stable on collider time scales. The diverse set of final states with little background include multiple photons and leptons, missing energy, massive stable charged particles and the possibility of highly displaced vertices in dilepton, leptoquark or diquark decays. Among others, a novel experimental signature of resonance reconstruction out of massive stable charged particles is highlighted. Some of the long-lived states also constitute Dark Matter candidates.

The LHC Phenomenology of Vectorlike Confinement

We investigate in detail the LHC phenomenology of "vectorlike confinement", where the Standard Model is augmented by a new confining gauge interaction and new light fermions that carry vectorlike charges under both the Standard Model and the new gauge group. If the new interaction confines at the TeV scale, this framework gives rise to a wide range of exotic collider signatures such as the production of a vector resonance that decays to a pair of collider-stable charged massive particles (a "di-CHAMP" resonance), to a pair of collider-stable massive colored particles (a "di-R-hadron resonance), to multiple photons, $W$s and $Z$s via two intermediate scalars, and/or to multi-jet final states. To study these signals at the LHC, we set up two benchmark models: one for the di-CHAMP and multi-photon signals, and the other for the di-R-hadron and multijet signals. For the di-CHAMP/multi-photon model, Standard Model backgrounds are negligible, and we show that a full reconstruction of the spectrum is possible, providing powerful evidence for vectorlike confinement. For the di-R-hadron/multijet model, we point out that in addition to the di-R-hadron signal, the rate of the production of four R-hadrons can also be sizable at the LHC. This, together with the multi-jet signals studied in earlier work, makes it possible to single out vectorlike confinement as the underlying dynamics.

A Common Origin for Neutrino Anarchy and Charged Hierarchies

The generation of exponential flavor hierarchies from extra-dimensional wavefunction overlaps is re-examined. We find, surprisingly, that coexistence of anarchic fermion mass matrices with such hierarchies is intrinsic and natural to this setting. The salient features of charged fermion and neutrino masses and mixings can thereby be captured within a single framework. Both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos can be realized. The minimal phenomenological consequences are discussed, including the need for a fundamental scale far above the weak scale to adequately suppress flavor-changing neutral currents. Two broad scenarios for stabilizing this electroweak hierarchy are studied, warped compactification and supersymmetry. In warped compactifications and "Flavorful Supersymmetry," where non-trivial flavor structure appears in the new TeV physics, Dirac neutrinos are strongly favored over Majorana by lepton flavor violation tests. We argue that this is part of a more general result for flavor-sensitive TeV-scale physics. Our scenario strongly suggests that the supersymmetric flavor problem is not solved locally in the extra dimension, but rather at or below the compactification scale. In the supersymmetric Dirac case, we discuss how the appearance of light right-handed sneutrinos considerably alters the physics of dark matter.

The 't Hooft Model As A Hologram

We consider the 3d dual of 1+1 dimensional large-N_c QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation, also known as the 't Hooft model. 't Hooft solved this model by deriving a Schroedinger equation for the wavefunction of a parton inside the meson. In the scale-invariant limit, we show how this equation is related by a transform to the equation of motion for a scalar field in AdS_3. We thus find an explicit map between the `parton-x' variable and the radial coordinate of AdS_3. This direct map allows us to check the AdS/CFT prescription from the 2d side. We describe various features of the dual in the conformal limit and to the leading order in conformal symmetry breaking, and make some comments on the 3d theory in the fully non-conformal regime.

Supersymmetry in Slow Motion

We construct new theories of electroweak symmetry breaking that employ a combination of supersymmetry and discrete symmetries to stabilize the weak scale up to and beyond the energies probed by the LHC. These models exhibit conventional supersymmetric spectra but the fermion-sfermion-gaugino vertices are absent. This closes many conventional decay channels, thereby allowing several superpartners to be stable on collider time scales. This opens the door to the possibility of directly observing R-hadrons and three flavors of sleptons inside the LHC detectors.

Colored Resonances at the Tevatron: Phenomenology and Discovery Potential in Multijets

There exist several classes of theories beyond the Standard Model which contain massive spin-1 color octets, generically called "colorons". Indeed we argue that colorons inevitably appear in the spectrum whenever new colored particles feel an additional confining force. Colorons are distinctive at hadron colliders as this is the only environment in which they can be resonantly produced. In the simplest models we show that the coloron naturally decays to multijets via secondary resonances, which can be consistent with all existing bounds, even for colorons as light as a few hundred GeV. We perform representative case studies and show that a search in the four-jet channel at the Tevatron has strong signal significance, while the LHC faces formidable challenges for such a search.
