Conformal Technicolor

We point out that the flavor problem in theories with dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking can be effectively decoupled if the physics above the TeV scale is strongly conformal, and the electroweak order parameter has a scaling dimension d = 1 + epsilon with epsilon \simeq 1/few. There are many restrictions on small values of epsilon: for epsilon << 1, electroweak symmetry breaking requires a fine-tuning similar to that of the standard model; large-N conformal field theories (including those obtained from the AdS/CFT correspondence) require fine-tuning for d < 2; `walking technicolor' theories cannot have d < 2, according to gap equation analyses. However, strong small-N conformal field theories with epsilon \simeq 1/few avoid all these constraints, and can give rise to natural dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking with a top quark flavor scale of order 10^{1/epsilon} TeV, large enough to decouple flavor. Small-N theories also have an acceptably small Peskin-Takeuchi S parameter. This class of theories provides a new direction for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking without problems from flavor or electroweak precision tests. A possible signal for these theories is a prominent scalar resonance below the TeV scale with couplings similar to a heavy standard model Higgs.

Probing Composite Gravity in Colliders

We explore scenarios in which the graviton is not a fundamental degree of freedom at short distances but merely emerges as an effective degree of freedom at long distances. In general, the scale of such graviton `compositeness', Lambda_g, can only be probed by measuring gravitational forces at short distances, which becomes increasingly difficult and eventually impossible as the distance is reduced. Here, however, we point out that if supersymmetry is an underlying symmetry, the gravitino can be used as an alternative probe to place a limit on Lambda_g in a collider environment, by demonstrating that there is a model-independent relation, Lambda_g > m_{3/2}. In other words, the gravitino knows that gravity is standard at least down to its Compton wavelength, so this can also be viewed as a test of general relativity possible at very short distances. If composite gravity is found first at some Lambda_g, this would imply a model-independent upper bound on m_{3/2}.

Searching for Composite Neutrinos in the Cosmic Microwave Background

We analyze signals in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in theories where the small Dirac neutrino masses arise as a consequence of the compositeness of right-handed neutrinos. In such theories, the right-handed neutrinos are massless ``baryons'' of a new strong gauge interaction. We find that the results crucially depend on whether or not the new strong sector undergoes chiral symmetry breaking. In the case with chiral symmetry breaking, we find that there are indeed signals in the CMB, but none of them is a direct consequence of neutrino compositeness. In contrast, if the underlying theory does not undergo chiral symmetry breaking, the large scattering cross-section among the composites gives rise to a sizable CMB signal over a wide region of the parameter space, and it can potentially probe whether the neutrino mass spectrum is hierarchical, inverse hierarchical, or degenerate. We also discuss collider constraints on the compositeness in the context of the CMB signals.

CMB Signals of Neutrino Mass Generation

We propose signals in the cosmic microwave background to probe the type and spectrum of neutrino masses. In theories that have spontaneous breaking of approximate lepton flavor symmetries at or below the weak scale, light pseudo-Goldstone bosons recouple to the cosmic neutrinos after nucleosynthesis and affect the acoustic oscillations of the electron-photon fluid during the eV era. Deviations from the Standard Model are predicted for both the total energy density in radiation during this epoch, ΔN_nu, and for the multipole of the n'th CMB peak at large n, Δl_n. The latter signal is difficult to reproduce other than by scattering of the known neutrinos, and is therefore an ideal test of our class of theories. In many models, the large shift, Δl_n \approx 8 n_S, depends on the number of neutrino species that scatter via the pseudo-Goldstone boson interaction. This interaction is proportional to the neutrino masses, so that the signal reflects the neutrino spectrum. The prediction for ΔN_nu is highly model dependent, but can be accurately computed within any given model. It is very sensitive to the number of pseudo-Goldstone bosons, and therefore to the underlying symmetries of the leptons, and is typically in the region of 0.03 < ΔN_nu < 1. This signal is significantly larger for Majorana neutrinos than for Dirac neutrinos, and, like the scattering signal, varies as the spectrum of neutrinos is changed from hierarchical to inverse hierarchical to degenerate.

Explicit Supersymmetry Breaking on Boundaries of Warped Extra Dimensions

Explicit supersymmetry breaking is studied in higher dimensional theories by having boundaries respect only a subgroup of the bulk symmetry. If the boundary symmetry is the maximal subgroup allowed by the boundary conditions imposed on the fields, then the symmetry can be consistently gauged; otherwise gauging leads to an inconsistent theory. In a warped fifth dimension, an explicit breaking of all bulk supersymmetries by the boundaries is found to be inconsistent with gauging; unlike the case of flat 5D, complete supersymmetry breaking by boundary conditions is not consistent with supergravity. Despite this result, the low energy effective theory resulting from boundary supersymmetry breaking becomes consistent in the limit where gravity decouples, and such models are explored in the hope that some way of successfully incorporating gravity can be found. A warped constrained standard model leads to a theory with one Higgs boson with mass expected close to the experimental limit. A unified theory in a warped fifth dimension is studied with boundary breaking of both SU(5) gauge symmetry and supersymmetry. The usual supersymmetric prediction for gauge coupling unification holds even though the TeV spectrum is quite unlike the MSSM. Such a theory may unify matter and Higgs in the same SU(5) hypermultiplet.

Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking from a Quasi-Localized Top Quark

We consider 5D supersymmetric SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1) theories compactified at the TeV scale on S^1/Z_2 with supersymmetry broken by boundary conditions. Localizing the top quark at a boundary of a fifth dimension by a bulk mass term M_t, reduces the strength of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking. For M_t R approximately 1--2, the natural value for the top and bottom squark masses are raised to 500--1200 GeV, and all other superpartners may have masses of the compactification scale, which has a natural range of 1/R ~= 1.5--3.5 TeV. The superpartner masses depend only on 1/R, and are precisely correlated amongst themselves and with the mass of the Higgs boson, which is lighter than 130 GeV.

SO(10) Unified Theories in Six Dimensions

We construct supersymmetric models of SO(10) unification in which the gauge symmetry is broken by orbifold compactification. We find that using boundary conditions to break the gauge symmetry down to $SU(3)_C \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y \otimes U(1)_X$ without leaving unwanted massless states requires at least two extra dimensions, motivating us to work with 6D orbifolds. SO(10) is broken by two operations, each of which induces gauge-breaking to either the Georgi-Glashow, Pati-Salam, or flipped $SU(5) \otimes U(1)$ subgroups; assigning different unbroken subgroups to the two operations leaves only the standard model gauge group and $U(1)_X$ unbroken. The models we build employ extra-dimensional mechanisms for naturally realizing doublet-triplet splitting, suppressing proton decay, and avoiding unwanted grand-unified fermion mass relations. We find some tension between being free of anomalies of the 6D bulk, accommodating a simple mechanism for generating right-handed neutrino masses, and preserving the precise prediction of the weak mixing angle.

Towards a Theory of Flavor from Orbifold GUTs

We show that the recently constructed 5-dimensional supersymmetric $S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$ orbifold GUT models allow an appealing explanation of the observed hierarchical structure of the quark and lepton masses and mixing angles. Flavor hierarchies arise from the geometrical suppression of some couplings when fields propagate in different numbers of dimensions, or on different fixed branes. Restrictions arising from locality in the extra dimension allow interesting texture zeroes to be easily generated. In addition the detailed nature of the SU(5)-breaking orbifold projections lead to simple theories where $b-τ$ unification is maintained but similar disfavored SU(5) relations for the lighter generations are naturally avoided. We find that simple 5d models based on $S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$ are strikingly successful in explaining many features of the masses and mixing angles of the 2nd and 3rd generation. Successful three generation models of flavor including neutrinos are constructed by generalizing the $S^1/(Z_2\times Z'_2)$ model to six dimensions. Large angle neutrino mixing is elegantly accommodated. Novel features of these models include a simple $m_u=0$ configuration leading to a solution of the strong CP problem.
