Bulk magnetic order in a two dimensional Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8) nickelate, isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates

Bulk magnetic order in two dimensional La4Ni3O8 nickelate with Ni1+/Ni2+ (d9/d8), isoelectronic with superconducting cuprates is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically. Magnetization, specific heat and 139La NMR evidence a transition at 105 K to an antiferromagnetic state. Theoretical calculations by DFT relate the transition to a nesting instability of the Fermi surface with ordering wave-vector Q = [1/3, 1/3, 0].

Phase separation in the vicinity of "quantum critical" doping concentration: implications for high temperature superconductors

A general quantitative measure of the tendency towards phase separation is introduced for systems exhibiting phase transitions or crossovers controlled by charge carrier concentration. This measure is devised for the situations when the quantitative knowledge of various contributions to free energy is incomplete, and is applied to evaluate the chances of electronic phase separation associated with the onset of antiferromagnetic correlations in high-temperature cuprate superconductors. The experimental phenomenology of lanthanum- and yittrium-based cuprates was used as input to this analysis. It is also pointed out that Coulomb repulsion between charge carriers separated by the distances of 1-3 lattice periods strengthens the tendency towards phase separation by accelerating the decay of antiferromagnetic correlations with doping. Overall, the present analysis indicates that cuprates are realistically close to the threshold of phase separation -- nanoscale limited or even macroscopic with charge density varying between adjacent crystal planes.

Vibronic mechanism of high-Tc superconductivity

The dispersion of the in-plane Cu-O bond-stretching LO phonon mode in the high-$T_{C}$ superconducting cuprates shows strong softening with doping near the zone boundary. We suggest that it can be described with a negative electronic dielectric function that results in overscreening of inter-site Coulomb interaction due to phonon-induced charge transfer and vibronic electron-phonon resonance. We propose that such a strong electron-phonon coupling of specific modes can form a basis for the phonon mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. With the Eliashberg theory using the experimentally determined electron dispersion and dielectric function, we demonstrate the possibility of superconductivity with the order parameter of the $d_{k_{x}^{2}-k_{y}^{2}}$ symmetry and the transition temperature well in excess of 100K.

The Phase Diagram of High-Tc Superconductors in the Presence of Dynamic Stripes

The phase diagram of superconducting copper oxides is calculated as a function of doping based on a theory of dynamic stripe induced superconductivity. The two major conclusions from the theory and the numerical analysis are that T* (the pseudogap onset) and Tc (superconductivity onset) are correlated through the pseudogap, which induces a gap in the single particle energies that persists into the superconducting state. By decreasing the doping the pseudogap Delta* increases and T* increases, but when Delta* exceeds a certain critical value the superconducting transition temperature Tc is suppressed. A mixed s- and d-wave pairing symmetry is also examined as function of doping.

Theory of Dynamic Stripe Induced Superconductivity

Since the recently reported giant isotope effect on T* [1] could be consistently explained within an anharmonic spin-charge-phonon interaction model, we consider here the role played by stripe formation on the superconducting properties within the same model. This is a two-component scenario and we recast its basic elements into a BCS effective Hamiltonian. We find that the stripe formation is vital to high-Tc superconductivity since it provides the glue between the two components to enhance Tc to the unexpectedly large values observed experimentally.

Phonon mediated hole pairing in the 1D Hubbard model near half-filling

The Hamiltonian describing a system of strongly correlated electrons coupled to dispersionless phonons was solved numerically for a ring of 8 atoms using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. It was found that electron correlation and electron-phonon coupling compete against each other, and strong electron correlations suppress the charge-ordered insulating state. This allows extended polarons to form in the strong electron-phonon coupling regime. It is shown that in this regime two polarons may form a pair via phonon mediated charge-fluctuation interaction. Based on the results we propose a novel mechanism of hole pairing. This mechanism could be relevant to High-Tc cuprates.
