Non-local spin correlation as a signature of Ising anyons trapped in vacancies of the Kitaev spin liquid

In the Kitaev chiral spin liquid, Ising anyons are realized as $Z_2$ fluxes binding Majorana zero modes, which, however, are thermal excitations with finite decay rates. On the other hand, a lattice vacancy traps a $Z_2$ flux even in the ground state, resulting in the stable realization of a Majorana zero mode in a vacancy. We demonstrate that spin-spin correlation functions between two vacancy sites exhibit long-range correlation arising from the fractionalized character of Majorana zero modes, in spite of the strong decay of bulk spin correlations. Remarkably, this non-local spin correlation does not decrease as the distance between two vacancy sites increases, signaling Majorana teleportation. Furthermore, we clarify that the non-local correlation can be detected electrically via the measurement of non-local conductance between two vacancy sites, which is straightforwardly utilized for the readout of Majorana qubits. These findings pave the way to the measurement-based quantum computation with Ising anyons trapped in vacancies of the Kitaev spin liquid.

Odd-frequency pairs and anomalous proximity effect in nematic and chiral states of superconducting topological insulators

We investigate emergent odd-frequency pairs and proximity effect in nematic and chiral states of superconducting topological insulators (STIs), such as $M_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ ($M=$ Cu, Sr, Nb). The interplay of superconducting gap symmetry, the orbital degrees of freedom, and strong spin-orbit interaction generates a variety of odd-frequency pairs in the bulk and surface of STIs. The nematic and chiral states are the prototypes of topological superconductors with and without time-reversal symmetry, respectively. We find that the Fermi surface evolution from a closed spheroidal to an open cylindrical shape gives rise to the evolution of the emergent odd-frequency pairs and surface Andreev bound states (SABSs). In addition, spin polarization of odd-frequency pairs and SABSs stems from the non-unitary pairing in the chiral state. These evolution and spin polarization of odd-frequency pairs and SABSs can be captured by tunnel conductance spectroscopy. Furthermore, we study the anomalous proximity effect in various irreducible representations of STIs. The anomalous proximity effect is originally predicted in spin-triplet superconductor junctions without spin-orbit interaction; Odd-frequency spin-triplet $s$-wave pairs penetrate into diffusive normal metals (DN) and induce a pronounced zero-energy peak of the local density of states in the DN region. Here we demonstrate that contrary to the well-known results, the anomalous proximity effect in STIs is not immune to nonmagnetic impurities. The fragility is attributed to the fact that the proximitized odd-frequency even-parity pairs are admixtures of $s$-wave and non-$s$-wave pairs due to strong spin-orbit interaction inherent to the parent materials.

Engineering Yang-Lee anyons via Majorana bound states

We propose the platform of a Yang-Lee anyon system which is constructed from Majorana bound states in topological superconductors. Yang-Lee anyons, described by the non-unitary conformal field theory with the central charge $c=-22/5$, are non-unitary counterparts of Fibonacci anyons, obeying the same fusion rule, but exhibiting non-unitary non-Abelian braiding statistics. We consider a topological superconductor junction system coupled with dissipative electron baths, which realizes a non-Hermitian interacting Majorana system. Numerically estimating the central charge, we examine the condition that the non-Hermitian Majorana system can simulate the Ising spin model of the Yang-Lee edge singularity, and confirm that, by controlling model parameters in a feasible way, the Yang-Lee edge criticality is realized. On the basis of this scenario, we present the scheme for the fusion, measurement and braiding of Yang-Lee anyons in our proposed setup.

Manipulation of Majorana Kramers Qubit and its Tolerance in Time-Reversal-Invariant Topological Superconductor

We investigate non-Abelian statistics of Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs) in a network system of one-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductors by using numerical simulations of braiding dynamics, and examine the tolerance against various perturbations which may cause decoherence of MKPs. We, first, consider effects of a magnetic field which breaks time-reversal symmetry. In contrast to a naive expectation, the non-Abelian braiding of MKPs is robust against applied magnetic fields provided that the initial and final states of a braiding process are invariant under the combination of a time reversal and a mirror reflection, even when intermediate states break the combined symmetry. Secondly, we investigate the stability of non-Abelian braidings in the case with gate-induced inhomogeneous potentials at junctions between superconducting nanowires, which generally generate a non-Majorana nearly zero-energy Andreeev bound state at the junctions. It is found that the non-Majorana nearly zero-energy states interfere with MKPs, resulting in the failure of non-Abelian braidings, when the length scale of the inhomogeneous potentials is comparable to the coherence length of the superconductors.

Intrinsic Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in the Unconventional Superconductor UTe2

We investigate the intrinsic anomalous thermal Hall effect as an effective probe of the order parameters of non-unitary pairing states of the putative spin-triplet superconductor UTe$_2$. We consider all symmetry-allowed non-unitary states under magnetic fields comprehensively, and calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity arising from time-reversal symmetry-breaking Weyl point nodes of the gap functions, assuming three types of Fermi surfaces; ellipsoid-shaped, cylinder-shaped, and ring-shaped ones, which are predicted by previous band calculations. We find the nonzero anomalous thermal Hall conductivity in the certain ratio of the two irreducible representations. The results may be utilized for future exploration of pairing states of UTe$_2$.

Anomalous acoustoelectric effect induced by clapping modes in chiral superconductors

Clapping modes, which are relative amplitude and phase modes between two chiral components of Cooper pairs, are bosonic collective modes inherent to chiral superconductors. These modes behave as long-lived bosons with masses smaller than the threshold energy, $2|Δ|$, for decay into unbound fermion pairs. Here, we clarify that the real/imaginary clapping modes in chiral superconductors directly couple to acoustic wave propagation when the weak particle-hole asymmetry of the normal state quasiparticle dispersion is taken into account. The clapping modes driven by an acoustic wave generate an alternating electric current, that is, the acoustoelectric effect in superconductors. Significantly, the clapping modes give rise to a transverse electric current. When the sound velocity is comparable to the Fermi velocity, as in heavy fermion compounds, the transverse current is resonantly enhanced at energy below the threshold for continuum excitations. This resonance provides a smoking-gun evidence of chiral superconductivity.

Spin-Nernst Effect in Time-Reversal-Invariant Topological Superconductors

We investigate the spin-Nernst effect in time-reversal invariant topological superconductors, and show that it provides a smoking-gun evidence for helical Cooper pairs. The spin-Nernst effect stems from asymmetric, in spin space, scattering of quasiparticles at nonmagnetic impurities, and generates a transverse spin current by the temperature gradient. Both the sign and the magnitude of the effect sensitively depend on the scattering phase shift at impurity sites. Therefore the spin-Nernst effect is uniquely suitable for identifying time-reversal invariant topological superconducting orders.

Non-Abelian Half-Quantum Vortices in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ Topological Superfluids

${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids realized in neutron stars are the largest topological quantum matters in our Universe. We establish the existence and stability of non-Abelian half-quantum vortices (HQVs) in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids with strong magnetic fields. Using a self-consistent microscopic approach, we find that a singly quantized vortex is energetically destabilized into a pair of two non-Abelian HQVs owing to the strongly spin-orbit-coupled pairing. We find a topologically protected Majorana fermion on each HQV, thereby providing two-fold non-Abelian anyons characterized by both Majorana fermions and a non-Abelian first homotopy group.

Spin-polarized phases of $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars

The interior of a neutron star is expected to be occupied by a neutron $^3P_2$ superfluid, which is the condensate of spin-triplet $p$-wave Cooper pairs of neutrons with total angular momentum $J=2$. Here we investigate the thermodynamic stability of $^3P_2$ superfluids in a neutron-star interior under a strong magnetic field. Using the theory incorporating the finite size correction of neutron Fermi surface, we show that the spin-polarized phases of $^3P_2$ superfluids, the magnetized biaxial nematic phase and the ferromagnetic phase, appear in high temperatures and high magnetic fields. These phases were missed in the previous studies using the quasiclassical approximation in which dispersions of neutrons are linearized around the Fermi surface. In particular, the ferromagnetic phase, which is the condensation of Cooper-paired neutrons with fully polarized spins, appears between the normal phase and the biaxial nematic phase and enlarge the thermodynamic stability of $^3P_2$ superfluids under strong magnetic fields. Furthermore, we present the augmented Ginzburg-Landau theory that incorporates the thermodynamic stability of spin-polarized $^3P_2$ superfluid phases.

Topological Nematic Phase Transition in Kitaev Magnets Under Applied Magnetic Fields

We propose a scenario of realizing the toric code phase, which can be potentially utilized for fault-tolerant quantum computation, in candidate materials of Kitaev magnets. It is demonstrated that four-body interactions among Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid state, which are induced by applied magnetic fields as well as non-Kitaev-type exchange interactions, trigger a nematic phase transition of Majorana bonds without magnetic orders, accompanying the change of the Chern number from $\pm 1$ to zero. This gapful spin liquid state with zero Chern number is nothing but the toric code phase. Our result potentially explains the topological nematic transition recently observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$ via heat capacity measurements [O. Tanaka et al., arXiv:2007.06757].

${\it Ab \ Initio}$ Simulation of Non-Abelian Braiding Statistics in Topological Superconductors

We numerically investigate non-Abelian braiding dynamics of vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, such as $s$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Majorana zero modes (MZMs) hosted by the vortices constitute a topological qubit, which offers a fundamental building block of topological quantum computation. As the MZMs are protected by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant, however, the Majorana qubit and quantum gate operations may be sensitive to intrinsic decoherence caused by quasiparticle interference. Numerically simulating the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation without assuming ${\it a \ priori}$ existence of MZMs, we examine quantum noises on the unitary operators of non-abelian braiding dynamics due to interactions with neighboring MZMs and other quasiparticle states. We demonstrate that after the interchange of two vortices, the lowest vortex-bound states accumulate the geometric phase $π/2$, and errors stemming from dynamical phases are negligibly small, irrespective of interactions of MZMs. Furthermore, we numerically simulate the braiding dynamics of four vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, and discuss an optimal braiding condition for realizing the high performance of non-Abelian statistics and quantum gates operations of Majorana-based qubits.

Radial Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a population-imbalanced Fermi gas

The possibility of a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in a population imbalanced Fermi gas with a vortex is proposed. Employing the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes formalism we self-consistently determine the superfluid order parameter and the particle number density in the presence of a vortex. We find that as increasing population imbalance, the superfluid order parameter spatially oscillates around the vortex core in the radial direction, indicating that the FFLO state becomes stable. We find that the radial FFLO states cover a wide region of the phase diagram in the weak-coupling regime at $T=0$ in contrast to the conventional case without a vortex. We show that this inhomogeneous superfluidity can be detected as peak structures of the local polarization rate associated with the node structure of the superfluid order parameter. Since the vortex in the 3D Fermi gas with population imbalance has been already realized in experiments, our proposal is a promising candidate of the FFLO state in cold atom physics.

Microscopic description of axisymmetric vortices in $^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids

We study quantized vortices in ${}^{3}P_{2}$ superfluids using a microscopic theory for the first time. The theory is based on the Eilenberger equation to determine the order parameters and the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation to obtain the eigenenergies and the core magnetization. Within axisymmetric vortex configurations, we find several stable and metastable vortex configurations which depend on the strength of a magnetic field, similar to a $v$ vortex and $o$ vortex in $^3$He superfluids. We demonstrate that the $o$ vortex is the most stable axisymmetric vortex in the presence of a strong magnetic field, and we find two zero-energy Majorana fermion bound states in the $o$-vortex core. We show that the profiles of the core magnetization calculated using the BdG equation are drastically different from those calculated using only the order parameter profiles known before.

Critical endpoint and universality class of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in neutron stars

We study the thermodynamics and critical behavior of neutron $^3P_2$ superfluids in the inner cores of neutron stars. $^3P_2$ superfluids offer a rich phase diagram including uniaxial/biaxial nematic phases, the ferromagnetic phase, and the cyclic phase. Using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equation as superfluid Fermi liquid theory, we show that a strong (weak) magnetic field drives the first (second) order transition from the dihedral-two biaxial nematic phase to dihedral-four biaxial nematic phase in low (high) temperatures, and their phase boundaries are divided by the critical endpoint (CEP). We demonstrate that the set of critical exponents at the CEP satisfies the Rushbrooke, Griffiths, and Widom equalities, indicating a new universality class. At the CEP, the $^3P_2$ superfluid exhibits critical behavior with nontrivial critical exponents, indicating a new universality class. Furthermore, we find that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation up to the 8th-order expansion satisfies three equalities and properly captures the physics of the CEP. This implies that the GL theory can provide a tractable way for understanding critical phenomena which may be realized in the dense core of realistic magnetars.

Chiral Higgs Mode in Nematic Superconductors

Nematic superconductivity with spontaneously broken rotation symmetry has recently been reported in doped topological insulators, $M_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ ($M$=Cu, Sr, Nb). Here we show that the electromagnetic (EM) response of these compounds provides a spectroscopy for bosonic excitations that reflect the pairing channel and the broken symmetries of the ground state. Using quasiclassical Keldysh theory, we find two characteristic bosonic modes in nematic superconductors: the nematicity mode and the chiral Higgs mode. The former corresponds to the vibrations of the nematic order parameter associated with broken crystal symmetry, while the latter represents the excitation of chiral Cooper pairs. The chiral Higgs mode softens at a critical doping, signaling a dynamical instability of the nematic state towards a new chiral ground state with broken time reversal and mirror symmetry. Evolution of the bosonic spectrum is directly captured by EM power absorption spectra. We also discuss contributions to the bosonic spectrum from sub-dominant pairing channels to the EM response.

Torsional chiral magnetic effect due to skyrmion textures in a Weyl superfluid $^3$He-A

We investigate torsional chiral magnetic effect (TCME) induced by skyrmion-vortex textures in the A phase of the superfluid $^3$He. In $^3$He-A, Bogoliubov quasiparticles around point nodes behave as Weyl fermions, and the nodal direction represented by the $\ell$-vector may form a spatially modulated texture. $\ell$-textures generate a chiral gauge field and a torsion field directly acting on the chirality of Weyl-Bogoliubov quasiparticles. It has been clarified by G. E. Volovik [Pi'sma Zh. Eksp. Teor. Fiz. {\bf 43}, 428 (1986)] that, if the $\ell$-vector is twisted, the chiral gauge field is responsible for the chiral anomaly, leading to an anomalous current along ${\ell}$. Here we show that, even for non-twisted $\ell$-vector fields, a torsion arising from $\ell$-textures brings about contributions to the equilibrium currents of Weyl-Bogoliubov quasiparticles along ${\rm curl}{\ell}$. This implies that while the anomalous current appears only for the twisted (Bloch-type) skyrmion of the $\ell$-vector, the extra mass current due to TCME always exists regardless of the skyrmion type. Solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we demonstrate that both Bloch-type and Néel-type skyrmions induce chiral fermion states with spectral asymmetry, and possess spatially inhomogeneous structures of Weyl bands in the real coordinate space. Furthermore, we discuss the contributions of Weyl-Bogoliubov quasiparticles and continuum states to the mass current density in the vicinity of the topological phase transition. In the weak coupling limit, continuum states give rise to backflow to the mass current generated by Weyl-Bogoliubov quasiparticles, which makes a non-negligible contribution to the orbital angular momentum. As the topological transition is approached, the mass current density is governed by the contribution of continuum states.

Negative thermal magnetoresistivity as a signature of chiral anomaly in Weyl superconductors

We propose that chiral anomaly of Weyl superconductors gives rise to negative thermal magnetoresistivity induced by emergent magnetic fields, which are generated by vortex textures of order parameters or lattice strain. We establish this scenario by combining the argument based on Berry curvatures, and the quasi-classical theory of the Eilenberger equation with quantum corrections arising from inhomogeneous structures. It is found that the chiral anomaly contribution of the thermal conductivity exhibits characteristic temperature dependence, which can be a smoking-gun signature of this effect.

Multifaceted properties of Andreev bound states: Interplay of symmetry and topology

Andreev bound states ubiquitously emerge as a consequence of nontrivial topological structures of the order parameter of superfluids and superconductors and significantly contribute to thermodynamics and low-energy quantum transport phenomena. We here share the current status of our knowledge on their multifaceted properties as Majorana fermions and odd-frequency pairing. A unified concept behind Andreev bound states originates from a soliton state in the one-dimensional Dirac equation with mass domain wall, and the interplay of ABSs with symmetry and topology enriches their physical characteristics. We make an overview of Andreev bound states with a special focus on superfluid $^3$He. The quantum liquid confined to restricted geometries serves as a rich repository of noteworthy quantum phenomena, such as mass acquisition of Majorana fermions driven by spontaneous symmetry breaking, topological quantum criticality, Weyl superfluidity, and the anomalous magnetic response. The marriage of the superfluid $^3$He and nano-fabrication techniques will take one to a new horizon of topological quantum phenomena associated with Andreev bound states.
