Charge/Spin Supercurrent and the Fulde-Ferrell State Induced by Crystal Deformation in Weyl/Dirac Superconductors

It has been predicted that emergent chiral magnetic fields can be generated by crystal deformation in Weyl/Dirac metals and superconductors. The emergent fields give rise to chiral anomaly phenomena as in the case of Weyl semimetals with usual electromagnetic fields. Here, we clarify effects of the chiral magnetic field on Cooper pairs in Weyl/Dirac superconductors on the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau equation microscopically derived from the quasiclassical Eilenberger formalism. It is found that Cooper pairs are affected by the emergent chiral magnetic field in a dramatic way, and the pseudo-Lorentz force due to the chiral magnetic field stabilizes the Fulde-Ferrell state and causes a charge/spin supercurrent which flows parallel to the chiral magnetic field in the case of Weyl/Dirac superconductors. This effect is in analogy with the chiral magnetic effect (CME) of Weyl semimetals. In addition, we elucidate that neither Meissner effect nor vortex state due to chiral magnetic fields occurs.

Bosonic Surface States and Acoustic Spectroscopy of Confined Superfluid $^3$He-B

Using an effective field theory we study the low-lying bosonic excitations and their couplings to phonons at ultrasonic frequencies in superfluid $^3$He-B under strong confinement. We show that confinement induces a rich spectrum of low-lying bosons, including surface-bound bosonic states, as well as fine structure of long-lived massive bosons. Under sufficiently strong confinement we find a dynamical instability of the $^3$He-B film: the frequency of the surface-bound boson softens at finite wavevector, then develops a pole in the upper half of the complex frequency plane, signalling a dynamical instability of the translationally invariant superfluid vacuum towards pair-density-wave "crystallization". We discuss the signatures and observability of the low-lying bosonic spectrum based on analysis of the ultrasound attenuation from resonant excitation of the bosonic modes. We also note that surface-bound bosonic modes are not unique to $^3$He-B, but are expected to be common to unconventional superconductors with a multi-component order parameter.

Topology and symmetry of surface Majorana arcs in cyclic superconductors

We study the topology and symmetry of surface Majorana arcs in superconductors with nonunitary "cyclic" pairing. Cyclic $p$-wave pairing may be realized in a cubic or tetrahedral crystal, while it is a candidate for the interior $^3P_2$ superfluids of neutron stars. The cyclic state is an admixture of full gap and nodal gap with eight Weyl points and the low-energy physics is governed by itinerant Majorana fermions. We here show the evolution of surface states from Majorana cone to Majorana arcs under rotation of surface orientation. The Majorana cone is protected solely by an accidental spin rotation symmetry and fragile against spin-orbit coupling, while the arcs are attributed to two topological invariants: the first Chern number and one-dimensional winding number. Lastly, we discuss how topologically protected surface states inherent to the nonunitary cyclic pairing can be captured from surface probes in candidate compounds, such as U$_{1-x}$Th$_{x}$Be$_{13}$. We examine tunneling conductance spectra for two competitive scenarios in U$_{1-x}$Th$_{x}$Be$_{13}$---the degenerate $E_u$ scenario and the accidental scenario.

On Nambu's Fermion-Boson Relations for Superfluid $^3$He-B

Superfluid $^3$He is a spin-triplet ($S=1$), p-wave ($L=1$) BCS condensate of Cooper pairs with total angular momentum $J=0$ in the ground state. In addition to the breaking of $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, separate spin or orbital rotation symmetry is broken to the maximal sub-group, $SO(3)_S\times SO(3)_L\rightarrow SO(3)_J$. The Fermions acquire mass, $m_F\equivΔ$, where $Δ$ is the BCS gap. There are also 18 Bosonic excitations - 4 Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes and 14 massive amplitude Higgs (AH) modes. The Bosonic modes are labelled by the total angular momentum, $J\in\{0,1,2\}$, and parity under particle-hole symmetry, $C=\pm 1$. For each pair of angular momentum quantum numbers, $J,J_z$, there are two Bosonic partners with $C=\pm 1$. Based this spectrum Nambu proposed a sum rule connecting the Fermion and Boson masses for BCS type theories, which for $^3$He-B is $M_{J^+}^2 + M_{J^-}^2 = 4m_F^2$ for each family of Bosonic modes labelled by $J$, where $M_{J^C}$ is the mass of the Bosonic mode with quantum numbers $(J,C)$. Nambu's sum rule (NSR) has recently been discussed in the context of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for physics beyond the standard model to speculate on possible partners to the recently discovered Higgs Boson at higher energies. Here we point out that Nambu's Fermion-Boson mass relations are not exact. Corrections to the Bosonic masses from (i) leading order strong-coupling corrections to BCS theory, and (ii) polarization of the parent Fermionic vacuum lead to violations of the sum-rule. Results for these mass corrections are given in both the $T\rightarrow 0$ and $T\rightarrow T_c$ limits. We also discuss experimental results, and theoretical analysis, for the masses of the $J^{C}=2^{\pm}$ Higgs modes and the magnitude of the violation of the NSR.

$^3P_2$ Superfluids Are Topological

We clarify topology of $^3P_2$ superfluids which are expected to be realized in the inner cores of neutron stars and cubic odd-parity superconductors. $^3P_2$ phases include uniaxial/biaxial nematic phases and nonunitary ferromagnetic and cyclic phases. We here show that all the phases are accompanied by different types of topologically protected gapless fermions: Surface Majorana fermions in nematic phases and a quartet of (single) itinerant Majorana fermions in the cyclic (ferromagnetic) phase. Using the superfluid Fermi liquid theory, we also demonstrate that dihedral-two and -four biaxial nematic phases are thermodynamically favored in the weak coupling limit under a magnetic field. It is shown that the tricritical point exists on the phase boundary between these two phases and may be realized in the core of realistic magnetars. We unveil the intertwining of symmetry and topology behind mass acquisition of surface Majorana fermions in nematic phases.

Symmetry Protected Topological Superfluids and Superconductors --- From the Basics to $^3$He ---

In this article, we give a comprehensive review of recent progress in research on symmetry-protected topological superfluids and topological crystalline superconductors, and their physical consequences such as helical and chiral Majorana fermions. We start this review article with the minimal model that captures the essence of such topological materials. The central part of this article is devoted to the superfluid $^3$He, which serves as a rich repository of novel topological quantum phenomena originating from the intertwining of symmetries and topologies. In particular, it is emphasized that the quantum fluid confined to nanofabricated geometries possesses multiple superfluid phases composed of the symmetry-protected topological superfluid B-phase, the A-phase as a Weyl superfluid, the nodal planar and polar phases, and the crystalline ordered stripe phase. All these phases generate noteworthy topological phenomena, including topological phase transitions concomitant with spontaneous symmetry breaking, Majorana fermions, Weyl superfluidity, emergent supersymmetry, spontaneous edge mass and spin currents, topological Fermi arcs, and exotic quasiparticles bound to topological defects. In relation to the mass current carried by gapless edge states, we also briefly review a longstanding issue on the intrinsic angular momentum paradox in $^3$He-A. Moreover, we share the current status of our knowledge on the topological aspects of unconventional superconductors, such as the heavy-fermion superconductor UPt$_3$ and superconducting doped topological insulators, in connection with the superfluid $^3$He.

Superconducting doped topological materials

Recently, the search for Majorana fermions (MFs) has become one of the most important and exciting issues in condensed matter physics since such an exotic quasiparticle is expected to potentially give rise to unprecedented quantum phenomena whose functional properties will be used to develop future quantum technology. Theoretically, the MFs may reside in various types of topological superconductor materials that is characterized by the topologically protected gapless surface state which are essentially an Andreev bound state. Superconducting doped topological insulators and topological crystalline insulators are promising candidates to harbor the MFs. In this review, we discuss recent progress and understanding on the research of MFs based on time-reversal-invariant superconducting topological materials to deepen our understanding and have a better outlook on both the search for and realization of MFs in these systems. We also discuss some advantages of these bulk systems to realize MFs including remarkable superconducting robustness against nonmagnetic impurities.

Dirac-Fermion-Induced Parity Mixing in Superconducting Topological Insulators

We self-consistently study surface states of superconducting topological insulators. We clarify that, if a topologically trivial bulk s-wave pairing symmetry is realized, parity mixing of pair potential near the surface is anomalously enhanced by surface Dirac fermions, opening an additional surface gap larger than the bulk one. In contrast to classical s-wave superconductors, the resulting surface density of state hosts an extra coherent peak at the induced gap besides a conventional peak at the bulk gap. We also find that no such extra peak appears for odd-parity superconductors with a cylindrical Fermi surface. Our calculation suggests that the simple U-shaped scanning tunneling microscope spectrum in Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ does not originate from s-wave superconductivity, but can be explained by odd-parity superconductivity with a cylindrical Fermi surface.

Symmetry Protected Topological Superfluid $^3$He-B

Owing to the richness of symmetry and well-established knowledge on the bulk superfluidity, the superfluid $^3$He has offered a prototypical system to study intertwining of topology and symmetry. This article reviews recent progress in understanding the topological superfluidity of $^3$He in a multifaceted manner, including symmetry consideration, the Jackiw-Rebbi's index theorem, and the quasiclassical theory. Special focus is placed on the symmetry protected topological superfuidity of the $^3$He-B confined in a slab geometry. The $^3$He-B under a magnetic field is separated to two different sub-phases: The symmetry protected topological phase and non-topological phase. The former phase is characterized by the existence of symmetry protected Majorana fermions. The topological phase transition between them is triggered off by the spontaneous breaking of a hidden discrete symmetry. The critical field is quantitatively determined from the microscopic calculation that takes account of magnetic dipole interaction of $^3$He nucleus. It is also demonstrated that odd-frequency even-parity Cooper pair amplitudes are emergent in low-lying quasiparticles. The key ingredients, symmetry protected Majorana fermions and odd-frequency pairing, bring an important consequence that the coupling of the surface states to an applied field is prohibited by the hidden discrete symmetry, while the topological phase transition with the spontaneous symmetry breaking is accompanied by anomalous enhancement and anisotropic quantum criticality of surface spin susceptibility. We also illustrate common topological features between topological crystalline superconductors and symmetry protected topological superfluids, taking UPt$_3$ and Rashba superconductors as examples.

Odd-frequency pairing and Ising spin susceptibility in time-reversal invariant superfluids and superconductors

We here examine the relation between odd-frequency spin-triple even-parity (OTE) Cooper pairs and anomalous surface magnetic response in time-reversal invariant (TRI) spin-triplet superfluids and superconductors. The spin susceptibility generally consists of two contributions: Even-frequency odd-parity pair amplitudes and odd-frequency even-parity pair amplitudes. The OTE pair amplitudes are absent in the bulk region, but ubiquitously exist in the surface and interface region as Andreev bound states. We here clarify that additional discrete symmetries, originating from the internal symmetry and point group symmetry, impose strong constraint on the OTE pair amplitudes emergent in the surface of TRI superfluids and superconductors. As a result of the symmetry constraint, the magnetic response of the OTE pairs yields Ising-like anisotropy. For the topological phase of the $^3$He-B in a restricted geometry, the coupling of the OTE pair amplitudes to an applied field is prohibited by an additional discrete symmetry. Once the discrete symmetry is broken, however, the OTE pairs start to couple to the applied field, which anomalously enhances surface spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we extend this theory to TRI superconductors, where the corresponding discrete symmetry is the mirror reflection symmetry.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov States in Two-Band Superconductors

We examine the possible phase diagram in an $H$-$T$ plane for Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in a two-band Pauli-limiting superconductor. We here demonstrate that, as a result of the competition of two different modulation length scales, the FFLO phase is divided into two phases by the first-order transition: the $Q_1$- and $Q_2$-FFLO phases at the higher and lower fields. The $Q_2$-FFLO phase is further divided by successive first order transitions into an infinite family of FFLO subphases with rational modulation vectors, forming a {\it devil's staircase structure} for the field dependences of the modulation vector and paramagnetic moment. The critical magnetic field above which the FFLO is stabilized is lower than that in a single-band superconductor. However, the tricritical Lifshitz point $L$ at $T_{\rm L}$ is invariant under two-band parameter changes.

Multi-band effects on Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states of Pauli-limited superconductors

Multi-band effects on Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states of a Pauli-limiting two-band superconductor are studied theoretically, based on self-consistent calculations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. First, we examine the phase diagrams of two-band systems with a passive band in which the intraband pairing interaction is absent and superconductivity is induced by a Cooper pair tunneling from an active band. It is demonstrated that the temperature of the Lifshitz point at which three second-order transition lines meet is independent of the Cooper pair tunneling strength. The BCS-FFLO critical field becomes lower than the Lifshitz point with increasing the interband tunneling strength, and the resultant phase diagram is qualitatively different from that in a single-band superconductor. We also study the thermodynamics of Pauli-limiting two-band superconductors with comparable intraband pairing interactions. As a consequence of a competing effect between two bands, the FFLO phase is divided into two phases: $Q_1$- and $Q_2$-FFLO phases. The $Q_1$-FFLO is favored in a high field regime and the $Q_2$-FFLO becomes stable in the lower field. In a particular case, the latter is further subdivided into a family of FFLO states with rational modulation lengths, leading to a devil's staircase structure in the field-dependence of physical quantities. The critical field, above which the FFLO is stabilized, is lower than that in a single band superconductor, while the temperature of tricritical Lifshitz point is invariant under the change of two-band parameters.

UPt$_3$ as a Topological Crystalline Superconductor

We investigate the topological aspect of the spin-triplet $f$-wave superconductor UPt$_3$ through microscopic calculations of edge- and vortex-bound states based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger and Bogoliubov-de Gennes theories. It is shown that a gapless and linear dispersion exists at the edge of the $ab$-plane. This forms a Majorana valley, protected by the mirror chiral symmetry. We also demonstrate that, with increasing magnetic field, vortex-bound quasiparticles undergo a topological phase transition from topologically trivial states in the double-core vortex to zero-energy states in the normal-core vortex. As long as the $d$-vector is locked into the $ab$-plane, the mirror symmetry holds the Majorana property of the zero-energy states, and thus UPt$_3$ preserves topological crystalline superconductivity that is robust against the crystal field and spin-orbit interaction.

Mirror Majorana zero modes in spinful superconductors/superfluids -Non-Abelian braiding of integer quantum vortices-

It has been widely believed that half quantum vortices are indispensable to realize topological stable Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian anyons in spinful superconductors/superfluids. Contrary to this wisdom, we here demonstrate that integer quantum vortices in spinful superconductors can host topologically stable Majorana zero modes because of the mirror symmetry. The symmetry protected Majorana fermions may exhibit non-Abelian anyon braiding.

Topological phases of quasi-one-dimensional fermionic atoms with a synthetic gauge field

We theoretically investigate the effect of intertube tunneling in topological superfluid phases of a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi gas with a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction. It is shown that the effective Hamiltonian is analogous to that of a nanowire topological superconductor with multibands. Using a hidden mirror symmetry in the system, we introduce a new topological number that ensures the existence of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes even in the presence of intertube tunneling. It is demonstrated from the full numerical calculation of self-consistent equations that some of Majorana modes survive against the intertube tunneling, when the number of one-dimensional tubes is odd in the $y$-direction. We also discuss a generalization of our consideration to nanowire topological superconductors.

Symmetry Protected Topological Order and Spin Susceptibility in Superfluid 3He-B

We here demonstrate that the superfluid 3He-B under a magnetic field in a particular direction stays topological due to a discrete symmetry, that is, in a symmetry protected topological order. Due to the symmetry protected topological order, helical surface Majorana fermions in the B phase remain gapless and their Ising spin character persists. We unveil that the competition between the Zeeman magnetic field and dipole interaction involves anomalous quantum phase transition where topological phase transition takes place together with spontaneous breaking of symmetry. Based on the quasiclassical theory, we illustrate that the phase transition is accompanied by anisotropic quantum criticality of spin susceptibilities on the surface, which is detectable in NMR experiments.

Odd-frequency Cooper pair amplitude around a vortex core in a chiral p-wave superconductor in the quantum limit

Solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation, we study the spatial structure of odd-frequency s-wave Cooper pair amplitudes at each quantized energy level of vortex bound states in chiral p-wave superconductors. For zero energy Majorana states, the odd-frequency s-wave pair amplitude has the same spatial structure as that of the local density of states even in atomic length scale. This relation also holds in finite energy bound states for single vortex winding anti-parallel to the chirality, but not for parallel vortex winding. The double winding vortex case is also studied.

Superfluid 3He in a restricted geometry with a perpendicular magnetic field

We theoretically investigate the role of surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) on the phase diagram and spin susceptibilities of superfluid 3He confined to a restricted geometry. We first explicitly derive the dispersion of the SABS in 3He-B in the presence of a magnetic field, where the Majorana Ising spin and the spin susceptibility contributed from the SABS are associated with the SO(3) order parameter manifold. Subsequently, based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger theory with Fermi liquid corrections, we discuss the nonlinear effect of a magnetic field on the SABS, where the magnetic field is perpendicular to the specular surface. It is directly demonstrated that a gapped SABS strongly enhances the magnetization density and spin susceptibility at the surface, compared with that in the normal 3He. To capture the characteristics of the SABS, we show the field- and temperature-dependences of the spatially averaged susceptibility which is detectable through NMR experiments. It turns out that the contribution of the SABS leads to nonmonotonic temperature-dependence of the spin susceptibility. Furthermore, we present the superfluid phase diagram, where the B-phase undergoes a first-order (second-order) phase transition to A-phase or planar phase at low (high) temperatures.
