A consistent $\mathcal{O}(v^2)$ NRQCD description of decays and high-$P_T$ prompt production of charmonia

We present a global determination of the six long-distance matrix elements (LDMEs) within non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) appearing in the production of prompt $J/ψ$ up to $\mathcal{O}(v^2)$ using high-$P_T$ LHC data for direct and feed-down contributions from $χ_c$ and $ψ(2S)$. Using a leading-power fragmentation framework at NLO+NLL, we fit $ψ(2S)/J/ψ$ yield ratios from ATLAS and CMS and $ψ(2S)$ CMS polarization data at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, injecting one decay width per charmonium. The fit LDMEs provide excellent predictions of the CMS and ATLAS cross-section data up to $P_T=360$ GeV for the $J/ψ$, as well as the $J/ψ$ polarization data from CMS. The obtained excellent agreement with production and decay data demonstrates that $\mathcal{O}(v^2)$ NRQCD is sufficient to describe $J/ψ$, $ψ(2S)$, and $χ_c$ hadroproduction at large $P_T$.

PineAPPLv1: fast and flexible theory predictions for present and future colliders

We present PineAPPLv1, a library designed to provide accurate and flexible interpolation tables of partonic cross sections that can be convolved with parton distribution functions (PDFs) and fragmentation functions (FFs) for the fast evaluation of high-energy physical observables. The core feature of the new release is the support of multiple convolutions involving initial- and final-state hadronic particles, with any polarisation, that are associated with PDFs and FFs. The library simultaneously supports polarised and unpolarised distributions that obey space-like or time-like evolution, and is developed for an arbitrary number of them, even if physical processes typically only require a few. Control of scale choices when more than one scale characterises a scattering process is also possible. We describe the technical details of the new representation of interpolation coefficients stored in the grid, and we demonstrate the capabilities of the library in a few phenomenological cases of interest. Specifically, we compute predictions for single-inclusive pion production in unpolarised and polarised proton-proton collisions and in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. We show how, in each case, PDF, FF, and scale uncertainties compare to each other and highlight the potential of PineAPPL as an essential ingredient for precision physics at current and future colliders.

Hyperoptimisation algorithm for the next generation of PDF determinations: ensemble regression with an unbiased selection model

We present a new automated procedure for selecting fitting methodologies in the determination of parton distribution functions (PDFs), based on a hyperoptimisation algorithm using ensemble regression. Building on the k-folding approach previously employed by the NNPDF collaboration, we introduce a systematic strategy to generate ensembles of hyperparameter configurations and define a new k-folding metric that consistently incorporates full PDF uncertainties. The algorithm outputs an ensemble of statistically equivalent fitting methodologies, which are combined to produce a single PDF set whose uncertainties consistently account for hyperparameter variation. We assess the impact of this approach by comparing results obtained with identical data and theoretical inputs but different fitting methodologies, determined using the previous and the new hyperoptimisation procedures. The new method broadly confirms earlier NNPDF results, while yielding moderately larger uncertainties in regions where data provide limited constraints.

Parton distribution functions and theory parameters: an NNPDF perspective

Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) are a key ingredient in theoretical predictions for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) observables and play a central role in the extraction of precision Standard Model (SM) and Beyond the SM (BSM) parameters from LHC data. Recent analyses demonstrate that the determination of fundamental SM parameters such as $α_s(m_Z)$, $m_W$, $m_t$, and $\sin^2θ_W$ is strongly influenced by the choice of input PDFs. In this contribution, we present the status and challenges of PDF determination from the NNPDF perspective, both in stand-alone fits and in joint extractions with (B)SM parameters. We place particular emphasis on results for $α_s(m_Z)$, $m_t$, and Wilson coefficients in the SM Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework.

Parametrisation scale invariance of Parton Distribution Function fits

In global PDF analyses, parton distribution functions (PDFs) are parametrised at a fixed input scale $Q_0$ and evolved to higher scales using the DGLAP equations. Since QCD evolution is fully determined within perturbation theory, the fitted PDFs should, in principle, be independent of the arbitrary choice of $Q_0$. In this work, we test this within the NNPDF framework by performing a series of fits at different starting scales, namely $Q_0 \in {1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 1.65}$ GeV. We find that the resulting PDFs are consistent within uncertainties and the fit quality remains stable across this range, therefore confirming the invariance of PDF determinations with respect to the choice of starting scale.

NeoPDF: A fast interpolation library for collinear and transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions

We present NeoPDF, an interpolation library that supports both collinear and transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution functions. NeoPDF is designed to be fast and reliable, with modern functionalities that target both current and future hadron collider experiments. It aims to address the shortcomings of existing interpolation libraries while providing additional features to support generic non-perturbative functions. Some of the features include a new interpolation based on Chebyshev polynomials, as well as the ability to interpolate along the nucleon number $A$, the reference strong coupling $α_s(M_Z)$, and the parton's intrinsic transverse momentum $k_T$. NeoPDF implements its own file format using binary serialisation and lossless compression, prioritising speed and efficiency. A no-code migration design is provided for LHAPDF in order to remove the frictions associated with transitioning to NeoPDF. The library is written in Rust with interfaces for various programming languages such as Fortran, C, C++, Python, and Mathematica. We benchmark NeoPDF against LHAPDF and TMDlib for various sets and show that it is both fast and accurate.

Parton distributions confront LHC Run II data: a quantitative appraisal

We present a systematic comparison of theoretical predictions and various high-precision experimental measurements, specifically of differential cross sections performed by the LHC run II for Drell-Yan gauge boson, top-quark pair, single-inclusive jet and di-jet production, and by HERA for single-inclusive jet and di-jet production. Theoretical predictions are computed at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. The most widely employed sets of Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) are used, and PDF, strong coupling, and missing higher order uncertainties are taken into account. We quantitatively assess the predictive power of each PDF set and the contribution of the different sources of experimental and theoretical uncertainty to the agreement between data and predictions. We show that control over all of these aspects is crucial to precision physics studies, such as the determination of Standard Model parameters at the LHC.

Combination of aN$^3$LO PDFs and implications for Higgs production cross-sections at the LHC

We discuss how the two existing approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) sets of parton distributions (PDFs) from the MSHT20 and NNPDF4.0 series can be combined for LHC phenomenology, both in the pure QCD case and for the QCD$\otimes$QED sets that include the photon PDF. Using the resulting combinations, we present predictions for the total inclusive cross-section for Higgs production in gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production at the LHC Run-3. For the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion channels, the corrections that arise when using correctly matched aN$^3$LO PDFs with N$^3$LO cross section calculations, compared to using NNLO PDFs, are significant, in many cases larger than the PDF uncertainty, and generally larger than the differences between the two aN$^3$LO PDF sets entering the combination. The combined aN$^3$LO PDF sets, MSHT20xNNPDF40_an3lo and MSHT20xNNPDF40_an3lo_qed, are made publicly available in the LHAPDF format and can be readily used for LHC phenomenology.

NNPDFpol2.0: a global determination of polarised PDFs and their uncertainties at next-to-next-to-leading order

We present NNPDFpol2.0, a new set of collinear helicity parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton based on legacy measurements of structure functions in inclusive neutral-current longitudinally polarised deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), and of W -boson, single-inclusive, and di-jet production asymmetries in longitudinally polarised proton-proton collisions. The determination is accurate to next-to-next-to-leading order in the strong coupling, and includes heavy quark mass corrections in the analysis of DIS data. Uncertainties due to missing higher-order corrections are systematically incorporated by means of a covariance matrix determined by scale variations. NNPDFpol2.0 is based on a machine learning methodology, that makes use of Monte Carlo sampling for the representation of uncertainties into PDFs, of a neural network for the parametrisation of PDFs, of stochastic gradient descent for the optimisation of PDF parameters, and of hyperoptimisation for the selection of the best fitting model. We study the impact on PDFs of higher-order corrections, of the positivity constraint, and of the data. We demonstrate two phenomenological applications of NNPDFpol2.0, specifically the determination of the proton spin fraction carried by gluons and quarks, and of theoretical predictions for single-hadron production in longitudinally polarised DIS and proton-proton collisions.

Hyperparameter Optimisation in Deep Learning from Ensemble Methods: Applications to Proton Structure

Deep learning models are defined in terms of a large number of hyperparameters, such as network architectures and optimiser settings. These hyperparameters must be determined separately from the model parameters such as network weights, and are often fixed by ad-hoc methods or by manual inspection of the results. An algorithmic, objective determination of hyperparameters demands the introduction of dedicated target metrics, different from those adopted for the model training. Here we present a new approach to the automated determination of hyperparameters in deep learning models based on statistical estimators constructed from an ensemble of models sampling the underlying probability distribution in model space. This strategy requires the simultaneous parallel training of up to several hundreds of models and can be effectively implemented by deploying hardware accelerators such as GPUs. As a proof-of-concept, we apply this method to the determination of the partonic substructure of the proton within the NNPDF framework and demonstrate the robustness of the resultant model uncertainty estimates. The new GPU-optimised NNPDF code results in a speed-up of up to two orders of magnitude, a stabilisation of the memory requirements, and a reduction in energy consumption of up to 90% as compared to sequential CPU-based model training. While focusing on proton structure, our method is fully general and is applicable to any deep learning problem relying on hyperparameter optimisation for an ensemble of models.

FPF@FCC: Neutrino, QCD, and BSM Physics Opportunities with Far-Forward Experiments at a 100 TeV Proton Collider

Proton-proton collisions at energy-frontier facilities produce an intense flux of high-energy light particles, including neutrinos, in the forward direction. At the LHC, these particles are currently being studied with the far-forward experiments FASER/FASER$ν$ and SND@LHC, while new dedicated experiments have been proposed in the context of a Forward Physics Facility (FPF) operating at the HL-LHC. Here we present a first quantitative exploration of the reach for neutrino, QCD, and BSM physics of far-forward experiments integrated within the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project as part of its proton-proton collision program (FCC-hh) at $\sqrt{s} \simeq 100$ TeV. We find that $10^9$ electron/muon neutrinos and $10^7$ tau neutrinos could be detected, an increase of several orders of magnitude compared to (HL-)LHC yields. We study the impact of neutrino DIS measurements at the FPF@FCC to constrain the unpolarised and spin partonic structure of the nucleon and assess their sensitivity to nuclear dynamics down to $x \sim 10^{-9}$ with neutrinos produced in proton-lead collisions. We demonstrate that the FPF@FCC could measure the neutrino charge radius for $ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ$ and reach down to five times the SM value for $ν_τ$. We fingerprint the BSM sensitivity of the FPF@FCC for a variety of models, including dark Higgs bosons, relaxion-type scenarios, quirks, and millicharged particles, finding that these experiments would be able to discover LLPs with masses as large as 50 GeV and couplings as small as $10^{-8}$, and quirks with masses up to 10 TeV. Our study highlights the remarkable opportunities made possible by integrating far-forward experiments into the FCC project, and it provides new motivation for the FPF at the HL-LHC as an essential precedent to optimize the forward physics experiments that will enable the FCC to achieve its full physics potential.

LO, NLO, and NNLO Parton Distributions for LHC Event Generators

We present NNPDF4.0MC, a variant of the NNPDF4.0 set of parton distributions (PDFs) at LO, NLO and NNLO, with and without inclusion of the photon PDF, suitable for use with Monte Carlo (MC) event generators, which require PDFs to satisfy additional constraints in comparison to standard PDF sets. These requirements include PDF positivity down to a low scale $Q\sim 1$ GeV, smooth extrapolation in the very small and large $x$ regions, and numerically stable results even in extreme regions of phase space for all PDFs. We compare the NNPDF4.0MC PDFs to their baseline NNPDF4.0 counterparts, and to the NNPDF2.3LO set entering the Monash tune of the Pythia8 event generator. We briefly assess the phenomenological impact of these PDFs on the cross-sections for hard and soft QCD processes at the LHC.

Yadism: Yet Another Deep-Inelastic Scattering Module

We present yadism, a library for the evaluation of both polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) structure functions and cross sections up to N$^3$LO in perturbative QCD. The package provides computations of observables in fixed-flavor and zero-mass variable flavor number schemes. The implementation of the general mass variable flavor number schemes is supported through the high virtuality limits for the heavy flavor coefficients. In addition, yadism provides a set of tools for the generation of interpolation grids in the PDF-independent PineAPPL format, allowing to test the PDF dependence on any DIS observable without needing to rerun the computation. This work is part of an ongoing effort to standardize the format of theory predictions in high-energy physics within the pineline framework. The code is open source, written in Python and documented to facilitate usage, integrations, and further extensions. Finally, the code has been benchmarked against the widely used APFEL++ and QCDNUM libraries.

The Path to N$^3$LO Parton Distributions

We extend the existing leading (LO), next-to-leading (NLO), and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) NNPDF4.0 sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) to approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (aN$^3$LO). We construct an approximation to the N$^3$LO splitting functions that includes all available partial information from both fixed-order computations and from small and large $x$ resummation, and estimate the uncertainty on this approximation by varying the set of basis functions used to construct the approximation. We include known N$^3$LO corrections to deep-inelastic scattering structure functions and extend the FONLL general-mass scheme to $\mathcal{O}\left( α_s^3\right)$ accuracy. We determine a set of aN$^3$LO PDFs by accounting both for the uncertainty on splitting functions due to the incomplete knowledge of N$^3$LO terms, and to the uncertainty related to missing higher corrections (MHOU), estimated by scale variation, through a theory covariance matrix formalism. We assess the perturbative stability of the resulting PDFs, we study the impact of MHOUs on them, and we compare our results to the aN$^3$LO PDFs from the MSHT group. We examine the phenomenological impact of aN$^3$LO corrections on parton luminosities at the LHC, and give a first assessment of the impact of aN$^3$LO PDFs on the Higgs and Drell-Yan total production cross-sections. We find that the aN$^3$LO NNPDF4.0 PDFs are consistent within uncertainties with their NNLO counterparts, that they improve the description of the global dataset and the perturbative convergence of Higgs and Drell-Yan cross-sections, and that MHOUs on PDFs decrease substantially with the increase of perturbative order.

Photons in the proton: implications for the LHC

We construct a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs), based on the recent NNPDF4.0 PDF set, that also include a photon PDF. The photon PDF is constructed using the LuxQED formalism, while QED evolution accounting for O(alpha), O(alpha alphas) and O(alpha^2) corrections is implemented and benchmarked by means of the EKO code. We investigate the impact of QED effects on NNPDF4.0, and compare our results both to our previous NNPDF3.1QED PDF set and to other recent PDF sets that include the photon. We assess the impact of photon-initiated processes and electroweak corrections on a variety of representative LHC processes, and find that they can reach the 5% level in vector boson pair production at large invariant mass.

Determination of the theory uncertainties from missing higher orders on NNLO parton distributions with percent accuracy

We include uncertainties due to missing higher order corrections to QCD computations (MHOU) used in the determination of parton distributions (PDFs) in the recent NNPDF4.0 set of PDFs. We use our previously published methodology, based on the treatment of MHOUs and their full correlations through a theory covariance matrix determined by scale variation, now fully incorporated in the new NNPDF theory pipeline. We assess the impact of the inclusion of MHOUs on the NNPDF4.0 central values and uncertainties, and specifically show that they lead to improved consistency of the PDF determination with an ensuing moderate reduction of PDF uncertainties at NNLO.

Heavy Quarks in Polarised Deep-Inelastic Scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider

We extend the FONLL general-mass variable-flavour-number scheme to the case of longitudinally polarised DIS structure functions, accounting for perturbative corrections up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$. We quantify the impact of charm quark mass and higher-order perturbative corrections on projected measurements of inclusive and charm-tagged longitudinal asymmetries at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and at the Electron-ion collider in China (EicC). We demonstrate how the inclusion of these corrections is essential to compute predictions with an accuracy that matches the projected precision of the measurements. The computation is made publicly available through the open-source EKO and YADISM programs

Approximating missing higher-orders in transverse momentum distributions using resummations

We present a more reliable approach to approximate the unknown next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) transverse momentum distribution of colourless final states, namely the Higgs boson produced via gluon fusion and the lepton pair produced via Drell--Yan (DY) mechanism. The approximation we construct relies on the combination of various resummation formalisms -- namely threshold, small-pt and high energy resummations -- by exploiting the singularity structure of the large logarithms in Mellin space. We show that for the case of Higgs boson production, the approximate N3LO transverse momentum distribution amounts to a correction of a few percent with respect to the NNLO result with a reduction in the scale dependence.
