Towards a smooth unification from an ekpyrotic bounce to the dark energy era

In the context of a ghost free $f(R,\mathcal{G})$ model, we present a non-singular cosmological scenario in which the universe initially contracts through an ekpyrotic phase having a bouncing like behaviour, and following the bounce, it smoothly transits to a matter or radiation like deceleration era which is further smoothly connected to the dark energy era at present epoch. We consider the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) coupling function in such a way that it gets compatible with the event GW170817. Using suitable reconstruction technique, we obtain the non-trivial scalar field potential as well as the GB coupling function. Such scalar potential and GB coupling function source a smooth unified scenario from an ekpyrotic bounce to the dark energy era with an intermediate deceleration era. The occurrence of ekpyrotic contraction phase justifies the resolution of the anisotropic problem (also known as BKL instability) in the background evolution. The Hubble radius shows an asymmetric behaviour around the bounce, in particular, the evolution of the Hubble radius leads to the generation era of the primordial perturbation modes far before the bounce in the deep sub-Hubble regime. Accordingly we perform the scalar and tensor perturbation evolution in the present context, and as a result, the scalar power spectrum at large scale modes is found to be problematic. Thus an extended scenario is proposed where we consider a pre-ekpyrotic phase having the equation of state parameter is less than unity, and re-examine the scalar and tensor power spectra, on large scales that cross the Hubble radius during the pre-ekpyrotic stage. In this regard, the GB coupling function shows considerable effects in reducing the tensor to scalar ratio compared to the case where the GB coupling is absent. Furthermore the dark energy epoch is consistent with the Planck+SNe+BAO data.

Uniqueness of Hahn--Banach extensions and some of its variants

In this study, we analyze the various strengthening and weakening of the uniqueness of the Hahn--Banach extension. In addition, we consider the case in which $Y$ is an ideal of $X$. In this context, we study the property-$(U)/ (SU)/ (HB)$ and property-$(k-U)$ for a subspace $Y$ of a Banach space $X$. We obtain various new characterizations of these properties. We discuss various examples in the classical Banach spaces, where the aforementioned properties are satisfied and where they fail. It is observed that a hyperplane in $c_0$ has property-$(HB)$ if and only if it is an $M$-summand. Considering $X, Z$ as Banach spaces and $Y$ as a subspace of $Z$, by identifying $(X\widehat{\otimes}_πY)^*\cong \mathcal{L}(X,Y^*)$, we observe that an isometry in $\mathcal{L}(X,Y^*)$ has a unique norm-preserving extension over $(X\widehat{\otimes}_πZ)$ if $Y$ has property-$(SU)$ in $Z$. It is observed that a finite dimensional subspace $Y$ of $c_0$ has property-$(k-U)$ in $c_0$, and if $Y$ is an ideal, then $Y^*$ is a $k$-strictly convex subspace of $\ell_1$ for some natural $k$.

Barrow entropic dark energy: A member of generalized holographic dark energy family

The holographic cut-off, in the formalism of generalized holographic dark energy (HDE), is generalized to depend on $L_\mathrm{IR} = L_\mathrm{IR} \left( L_\mathrm{p}, \dot L_\mathrm{p}, \ddot L_\mathrm{p}, \cdots, L_\mathrm{f}, \dot L_\mathrm{f}, \cdots, a\right)$, where $L_\mathrm{p}$ and $L_\mathrm{f}$ are the particle horizon and future horizon respectively, and $a$ is the scale factor of the universe. Based on such formalism, we showed that the Barrow entropic dark energy (DE) model is equivalent to the generalized HDE where the respective holographic cut-off is determined by two ways -- (1) in terms of particle horizon and its derivative and (2) in terms of future horizon and its derivative. Interestingly, such cut-off turns out to depend up-to first order derivative of $L_\mathrm{p}$ or $L_\mathrm{f}$ respectively. Such equivalence between the Barrow entropic dark energy and the generalized HDE is extended to the scenario where the exponent of the Barrow entropy allows to vary with the cosmological expansion of the universe. In both the cases (whether the Barrow exponent is a constant or varies with the cosmological evolution), we determine effective equation of state (EoS) parameter from the generalized holographic point of view, which, by comparing with the Barrow DE EoS parameter, further ensures the equivalence between the Barrow entropic dark energy and the generalized HDE.

A critical analysis of modulus stabilization in a higher dimensional F(R) gravity

An exact solution for the bulk 5-dimensional geometry is derived for F(R) gravity with non-flat de-Sitter 3-branes located at the $M_4 \times Z_2$ orbifold boundaries. The corresponding form of F(R) that leads to such an exact solution of the bulk metric is derived which turns out to have all positive integer powers of R.In such a scenario the stability issue of the modulus (radion field) is analyzed critically for different curvature epochs in both Einstein and Jordan frames. The radion in the effective 4-d theory exhibits a phantom epoch making this model viable for a non-singular bounce. Simultaneous resolution of the gauge hierarchy problem is exhibited through the resulting stable vaue of the radion field in the effective $3+1$ dimensional theory.

Unifying an asymmetric bounce to the dark energy in Chern-Simons F(R) gravity

We propose a cosmological scenario in which the universe undergoes through a non-singular bounce, and after the bounce, it decelerates having a matter-like dominated evolution during some regime of the deceleration era, and finally at the present epoch it evolves through an accelerating stage. Our aim is to study such evolution in the context of Chern-Simons corrected F(R) gravity theory and confront the model with various observational data. Using the reconstruction technique, and in addition by employing suitable boundary conditions, we determine the form of F(R) for the entire possible range of the cosmic time. The form of F(R) seems to unify a non-singular bounce with a dark energy epoch, in particular, from a non-singular bounce to a deceleration epoch and from a deceleration epoch to a late time acceleration era. It is important to mention that the bouncing scenario in the present context is an asymmetric bounce, in particular, the Hubble radius monotonically increases and asymptotically diverges at the late contracting era, while it seems to decrease with time at the present epoch. Such evolution of the Hubble radius leads to the primordial perturbation modes generate at the deep contracting era when all the perturbation modes lie within the horizon. We calculate the scalar and tensor power spectra, and as a result, the primordial observables are found to be in agreement with the latest Planck 2018 constraints. In this regard, the Chern-Simons term seems to have considerable effects on the tensor perturbation evolution, however keeping intact the scalar part of the perturbation with that of in the case of a vacuum F(R) model, and as a result, the Chern-Simons term proves to play an important role in making the observable quantities consistent with the Planck results. Furthermore the theoretical expectation of the dark energy observables are confronted with the Planck+SNe+BAO data.

Decoding the phases of early and late time reheating through imprints on primordial gravitational waves

Primordial gravitational waves (GWs) carry the imprints of the dynamics of the universe during its earliest stages. With a variety of GW detectors being proposed to operate over a wide range of frequencies, there is great expectation that observations of primordial GWs can provide us with an unprecedented window to the physics operating during inflation and reheating. In this work, we closely examine the effects of the regime of reheating on the spectrum of primordial GWs observed today. We consider a scenario wherein the phase of reheating is described by an averaged equation of state (EoS) parameter with an abrupt transition to radiation domination as well as a scenario wherein there is a gradual change in the effective EoS parameter to that of radiation due to the perturbative decay of the inflaton. We show that the perturbative decay of the inflaton leads to oscillations in the spectrum of GWs, which, if observed, can possibly help us decipher finer aspects of the reheating mechanism. We also examine the effects of a secondary phase of reheating arising due to a brief epoch driven possibly by an exotic, non-canonical, scalar field. Interestingly, we find that, for suitable values of the EoS parameter governing the secondary phase of reheating, the GWs can be of the strength as suggested by the recent NANOGrav observations. We conclude with a discussion of the wider implications of our analysis.

Different faces of generalized holographic dark energy

In the formalism of generalized holographic dark energy (HDE), the holographic cut-off is generalized to depend upon $L_\mathrm{IR} = L_\mathrm{IR} \left( L_\mathrm{p}, \dot L_\mathrm{p}, \ddot L_\mathrm{p}, \cdots, L_\mathrm{f}, \dot L_\mathrm{f}, \cdots, a\right)$ with $L_\mathrm{p}$ and $L_\mathrm{f}$ are the particle horizon and the future horizon, respectively (moreover $a$ is the scale factor of the universe). Based on such formalism, in the present paper, we show that a wide class of dark energy (DE) models can be regarded as different candidates of the generalized HDE family, with respective cut-offs. This can be thought as a symmetry between the generalized HDE and different DE models. In this regard, we consider several entropic dark energy models - like Tsallis entropic DE, the Rényi entropic DE, and the Sharma-Mittal entropic DE - and showed that they are indeed equivalent with the generalized HDE. Such equivalence between the entropic DE and the generalized HDE is extended to the scenario where the respective exponents of the entropy functions are allowed to vary with the expansion of the universe. Besides the entropic DE models, the correspondence with the generalized HDE is also established for the Quintessence and for the Ricci DE models. In all the above cases, the effective equation of state (EoS) parameter corresponds to the holographic energy density are determined, by which the equivalence of various DE models with the respective generalized HDE models are further confirmed. The equivalent holographic cut-offs are determined by two ways: (1) in terms of the particle horizon and its derivatives, (2) in terms of the future horizon horizon and its derivatives.

Effective Theory of Inflationary Magnetogenesis and Constraints on Reheating

Effective theory framework based on symmetry has recently gained widespread interest in the field of cosmology. In this paper, we apply the same idea on the genesis of the primordial magnetic field and its evolution throughout the cosmological universe. Given the broken time-diffeomorphism symmetry by the cosmological background, we considered the most general Lagrangian of electromagnetic and metric fluctuation up to second order, which naturally breaks conformal symmetry in the electromagnetic (EM) sector. We also include parity violation in the electromagnetic sector with the motivation that has potential observational significance. In such a set-up, we explore the evolution of EM, scalar, and tensor perturbations considering different observational constraints. In our analysis we emphasize the role played by the intermediate reheating phase which has got limited interest in all the previous studies. Assuming the vanishing electrical conductivity during the entire period of reheating, the well-known Faraday electromagnetic induction has been shown to play a crucial role in enhancing the strength of the present-day magnetic field. We show how such physical effects combined with the PLANCK and the large scale magnetic field observation makes a large class of models viable and severely restricts the reheating equation of state parameter within a very narrow range of $0.01 < ω_\mathrm{eff} < 0.27$, which is nearly independent of reheating scenarios we have considered.

The effect of thermal radiation on singularities in the dark universe

Cosmological models with an inhomogeneous viscous dark fluid, coupled with dark matter in the Friedmann- Robertson-Walker (FRW) flat universe, are considered. The influence of thermal effects caused by Hawking radiation on the visible horizon is studied, in connection with the classified type I and type III singularities which are known to occur within a finite amount of time. Allowance of thermal effects implies that a transition to a type II singularity can take place, in a finite time. We take into account a bulk viscosity of the dark fluid, observing the equation of state in the case of radiation, and find that there is a qualitative change in the singular universe of type I: it may pass into a singularity of type III, or it may avoid the singularity at all.

Inflationary magnetogenesis with reheating phase from higher curvature coupling

We investigate the generation of magnetic fields from inflation, which occurs via breakdown of the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic (EM) field, when coupled with the Ricci scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. For the case of instantaneous reheating, the resulting strength of the magnetic field at present is too small and violates the observational constraints. However, the problem is solved provided there is a reheating phase with a non-zero e-fold number. During reheating, the energy density of the magnetic field is seen to evolve as $(a^3H)^{-2}$ and, after that, as $a^{-4}$ up to the present epoch (here $a$ is the scale factor and $H$ the Hubble parameter). It is found that this reheating phase -- characterized by a certain e-fold number, a constant value of the equation of state parameter, and a given reheating temperature -- renders the magnetogenesis model compatible with the observational constraints. The model provides, in turn, a viable way of constraining the reheating equation of state parameter, from data analysis of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Moreover we discuss the Schwinger backreaction in the present context and determine the necessary constraints on the reheating equation of state parameter.

Bouncing cosmology in a curved braneworld

We explore the possibility of a non-singular bounce in our universe from a warped braneworld scenario with dynamical branes and a non-zero brane cosmological constant. Such models naturally incorporate a scalar sector known as the radion originating from the modulus of the theory. The presence of brane cosmological constant renders the branes to be non-flat and gives rise to a potential and a non-canonical kinetic term for the radion field in the four dimensional effective action. The kinetic term exhibits a phantom-like behavior within the domain of evolution of the modulus which leads to a violation of the null-energy condition often observed in a bouncing universe. The interplay of the radion potential and kinetic term enables the evolution of the radion field from a normal to a phantom regime where the universe transits from a contracting era to an expanding epoch through a non-singular bounce. Analysis of the scalar and tensor perturbations over such background evolution reveal that the primordial observables e.g., the amplitude of scalar perturbations $\mathcal{A}_s$, tensor to scalar ratio $r$ and the scalar spectral index $n_s$ are in agreement with the current constraints reported by the Planck satellite. The implications are discussed.

Uniqueness of Hahn-Banach extension and related norm-$1$ projections in dual spaces

In this paper we study two properties viz. property-$U$ and property-$SU$ of a subspace $Y$ of a Banach space which correspond to the uniqueness of the Hahn-Banach extension of each linear functional in $Y^*$ and in addition to that this association forms a linear operator of norm-1 from $Y^*$ to $X^*$. It is proved that, under certain geometric assumptions on $X, Y, Z$ these properties are stable with respect to the injective tensor product; $Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $Z$ if and only if $X\otimes_\e^\vee Y$ has property-$U$ ($SU$) in $X\otimes_\e^\vee Z$. We prove that when $X^*$ has the Radon-Nikod$\acute{y}$m Property for $1 3$ is a Hilbert space if and only if for any two subspaces $Y, Z$ with property-$SU$ in $X$, $Y+Z$ has property-$SU$ in $X$ whenever $Y+Z$ is closed. We characterize all hyperplanes in $c_0$ which have property-$SU$.

From a Bounce to the Dark Energy Era with $F(R)$ Gravity

In this work we consider a cosmological scenario in which the Universe contracts initially having a bouncing-like behavior, and accordingly after it bounces off, it decelerates following a matter dominated like evolution and at very large positive times it undergoes through an accelerating stage. Our aim is to study such evolution in the context of $F(R)$ gravity theory, and confront quantitatively the model with the recent observations. Using several reconstruction techniques, we analytically obtain the form of $F(R)$ gravity in two extreme stages of the universe, particularly near the bounce and at the late time era respectively. With such analytic results and in addition by employing appropriate boundary conditions, we numerically solve the $F(R)$ gravitational equation to determine the form of the $F(R)$ for a wide range of values of the cosmic time. The numerically solved $F(R)$ gravity realizes an unification of certain cosmological epochs of the universe, in particular, from a non-singular bounce to a matter dominated epoch and from the matter dominated to a late time dark energy epoch. Correspondingly, the Hubble parameter and the effective equation of state parameter of the Universe are found and several qualitative features of the model are discussed. The Hubble radius goes to zero asymptotically in both sides of the bounce, which leads to the generation of the primordial curvature perturbation modes near the bouncing point. Correspondingly, we calculate the scalar and tensor perturbations power spectra near the bouncing point, and accordingly we determine the observable quantities like the spectral index of the scalar curvature perturbations, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and as a result, we directly confront the present model with the latest Planck observations. Furthermore the $F(R)$ gravity dark energy epoch is confronted with the Sne-Ia+BAO+H(z)+CMB data.

Scalaron tunneling and the fate of antisymmetric tensor fields in $F(R)$ gravity

The work provides a possible explanation of a well motivated question - why the present universe is practically free from any noticeable footmarks of higher rank antisymmetric tensor fields, despite having the signatures of scalar, vector, fermion as well as symmetric rank 2 tensor field in the form of gravity ? The explanation proposed here originates from the higher curvature degrees of freedom present in a $F(R)$ gravity model. In such a model, we show that the scalar degree of freedom (also known as scalaron) associated with the higher curvature term may undergo a quantum tunneling which in turn suppresses the couplings of antisymmetric massless tensor fields with various Standard Model fields.

Antisymmetric tensor fields in modified gravity: a summary

We provide various aspects of second rank antisymmetric Kalb-Ramond (KR) field in modified theories of gravity. The KR field energy density is found to decrease with the expansion of our universe at a faster rate in comparison to radiation and matter components. Thus as the Universe evolves and cools down, the contribution of the KR field on the evolutionary process reduces significantly, and at present it almost does not affect the universe evolution. However the KR field has a significant contribution during early universe, in particular, it affects the beginning of inflation as well as increases the amount of primordial gravitational radiation and hence enlarges the value of tensor to scalar ratio in respect to the case when the KR field is absent. In regard to the KR field couplings, it turns out that in four dimensional higher curvature inflationary model the couplings of the KR field to other matter fields is given by $1/M_{Pl}$ i.e same as the usual gravity-matter coupling. However in higher dimensional higher curvature model the KR couplings get an additional suppression over $1/M_{Pl}$ and thus gives a better explanation of why the present universe carries practically no footprint of the Kalb-Ramond field in comparison to the 4D higher curvature model. The higher curvature term in 5D action acts as a suitable stabilizing agent in the dynamical stabilization mechanism of the extra dimensional modulus field from the perspective of effective on-brane theory. Based on the evolution of KR field, one intriguing question can be - sitting in present day universe, how do we confirm the existence of the Kalb-Ramond field which has considerably low energy density in our present universe but has a significant impact during early universe ? We try to answer this question by the phenomena "cosmological quantum entanglement" which indeed carries the information of early universe.

Bottom-up reconstruction of non-singular bounce in F(R) gravity from observational indices

We apply the bottom-up reconstruction technique in the context of bouncing cosmology in F(R) gravity, where the starting point is a suitable ansatz of observable quantity (like spectral index or tensor to scalar ratio) rather than a priori form of Hubble parameter. In inflationary scenario, the slow roll conditions are assumed to hold true, and thus the observational indices have general expressions in terms of the slow-roll parameters, as for example the tensor to scalar ratio in F(R) inflation can be expressed as $r = 48ε_F^2$ with $ε_F = -\frac{1}{H_F^2}\frac{dH_F}{dt_F}$ and $H_F$, $t_F$ are the Hubble parameter, cosmic time respectively. However, in the bouncing cosmology (say in F(R) gravity theory), the slow-roll conditions are not satisfied, in general, and thus the observable quantities do not have any general expressions that will hold true irrespective of the form of F(R). Thus, in order to apply the bottom-up reconstruction procedure in F(R) bouncing model, we use the conformal correspondence between F(R) and scalar-tensor model where the conformal factor in the present context is chosen in a way such that it leads to an inflationary scenario in the scalar-tensor frame. Due to the reason that the scalar and tensor perturbations remain invariant under conformal transformation, the observable viability of the scalar-tensor inflationary model confirms the viability of the conformally connected F(R) bouncing model. Motivated by these arguments, here we construct a viable non-singular bounce in F(R) gravity directly from the observable indices of the corresponding scalar-tensor inflationary model.

Unifying Holographic Inflation with Holographic Dark Energy: a Covariant Approach

In the present paper, we use the holographic approach to describe the early-time acceleration and the late-time acceleration eras of our Universe in a unified manner. Such ``holographic unification'' is found to have a correspondence with various higher curvature cosmological models with or without matter fields. The corresponding holographic cut-offs are determined in terms of the particle horizon and its derivatives, or the future horizon and its derivatives. As a result, the holographic energy density we propose is able to merge various cosmological epochs of the Universe from a holographic point of view. We find the holographic correspondence of several $F(R)$ gravity models, including axion-$F(R)$ gravity models, of several Gauss-Bonnet $F(G)$ models and finally of $F(T)$ models, and in each case we demonstrate that it is possible to describe in a unified way inflation and late-time acceleration in the context of the same holographic model.

Cosmological quantum entanglement : A possible testbed for the existence of Kalb-Ramond field

In the present paper, we explore the possible effects of a second rank antisymmetric tensor field, known as Kalb-Ramond (KR) field, on cosmological particle production as well as on quantum entanglement for a massive scalar field propagating in a four dimensional FRW spacetime evolves through a symmetric bounce. For this purpose, the scalar field is considered to be coupled with the KR field and also with the Ricci scalar via the term $\sim ξRΦ^2$ (with $ξ$ be the coupling). The presence of KR field spoils the conformal symmetry of a massless scalar field even for $ξ= 1/6$ in four dimensional context, which has interesting consequences on particle production and consequently on quantum entanglement as we will discuss. In particular, the presence of KR field in a FRW bouncing universe allows a greater particle production and consequently the upper bound of the entanglement entropy becomes larger in comparison to the case when the KR field is absent. This may provide an interesting testbed for the existence of Kalb-Ramond field in our universe.
