Static magnetic order with strong quantum fluctuations in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Kitaev interactions, arising from the interplay of frustration and bond anisotropy, can lead to strong quantum fluctuations and, in an ideal case, to a quantum-spin-liquid state. However, in many nonideal materials, spurious non-Kitaev interactions typically promote a zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the d-orbital transition metal compounds. By combining neutron scattering with muon-spin rotation and relaxation techniques, we provide new insights into the exotic properties of Na2Co2TeO6, a candidate Kitaev material. Below TN, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate becomes almost constant (at 0.45 us-1). We attribute this temperature-independent muon-spin relaxation rate to the strong quantum fluctuations, as well as to the frustrated Kitaev interactions. As the magnetic field increases, neutron scattering data indicate a much broader spin-wave-excitation gap at the K-point. Therefore, quantum fluctuations seem not only robust, but are even enhanced by the applied magnetic field. Our findings provide valuable hints for understanding the onset of the quantum-spin-liquid state in Kitaev materials.

Static and dynamical properties of the spin-5/2 nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba3MnSb2O9

We study the ground state and spin excitations in Ba3MnSb2O9, an easy-plane S = 5/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet. By combining single-crystal neutron scattering, electric spin resonance (ESR), and spin wave calculations, we determine the frustrated quasi-two-dimensional spin Hamiltonian parameters describing the material. While the material has a slight monoclinic structural distortion, which could allow for isosceles-triangular exchanges and biaxial anisotropy by symmetry, we observe no deviation from the behavior expected for spin waves in the in-plane 120o state. Even the easy-plane anisotropy is so small that it can only be detected by ESR in our study. In conjunction with the quasi-two-dimensionality, our study establishes that Ba3MnSb2O9 is a nearly ideal triangular lattice antiferromagnet with the quasi-classical spin S = 5/2, which suggests that it has the potential for an experimental study of Z- or Z2-vortex excitations.

Distance of PSR B0458+46 indicated by FAST HI absorption observations

The pulsar B0458+46 was previously believed to have a distance of about 1.3$~$kpc and to be associated with a nearby supernova remnant, SNR HB9 (G160.9+2.6). We observe the neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption spectrum of PSR B0458+46 by using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), and detect two absorption lines at radial velocities of $V_{\rm LSR} = {-7.7}~{\rm km~s}^{-1}$ and $-28.1~{\rm km~s^{-1}}$. Based on the Galactic rotation curve with a modification factor correcting for the systematic stream in the anticenter region, we derive the kinematic distance of the farther absorption cloud, which is found to be located $2.7^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$ kpc away, just beyond the Perseus Arm. We also obtain a direct distance estimation of the absorption clouds, being $2.3_{-0.7}^{+1.1}$ kpc, based on a comparison of their velocity with the HI emission in the Perseus and Outer Arms that was well-defined by recently measured parallax tracers. As a result, we conclude that PSR B0458+46 should be located beyond the Perseus Arm, with a lower limit distance of 2.7 kpc, and therefore not associated with SNR HB9. The doubled distance indicates a deficiency of thermal electrons in the immediate outer Galaxy, with much less density than current models predict. Additionally, we detect a new high-velocity HI cloud in the direction of this pulsar.

Multiple lattice instabilities and complex ground state in Cs$_2$AgBiBr$_6$

Metal halides perovskites (MHPs) are attracting considerable interest for optoelectronic applications, with Cs$_2$AgBiBr$_6$ one of the main contenders among lead-free systems. Cs$_2$AgBiBr$_6$ crystallizes in a nominally double-perovskite structure, but exhibits a soft lattice with large atomic fluctuations characteristic of MHPs. While crucial to understand electron-phonon and phonon-phonon couplings, the spatio-temporal correlations of these fluctuations remain largely unknown. Here, we reveal these correlations using comprehensive neutron and x-ray scattering measurements on Cs$_2$AgBiBr$_6$ single-crystals, complemented with first-principles simulations augmented with machine-learned neural-network potentials. We report the discovery of an unexpected complex modulated ground state structure containing several hundred atoms, arising from a soft-phonon instability of the low-temperature tetragonal phase. Further, our experiments and simulations both reveal extensive correlated 2D fluctuations of Br octahedra at finite temperature, arising from soft anharmonic optic phonons, reflecting very shallow potential wells. These results provide new insights into the atomic structure and fluctuations in MHPs, critical to understand and control their thermal and optoelectronic properties.

Coherent Wave Dynamics and Language Generation of a Generative Pre-trained Transformer

Large Language Models (LLMs), such as the Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT), have achieved tremendous success in various language tasks, but their emergent abilities have also raised many questions, concerns, and challenges that need to be addressed. To gain a better understanding of the models' inner mechanisms, we analyze the hidden state and channel wave dynamics in a small GPT, focusing on the coherence of wave patterns in terms of cross-channel correlation and individual auto-correlation. Our findings suggest that wave dynamics offer consistent and repeatable intrinsic oscillation modes, along with context-aware plasticity and expressiveness in language generation. By analyzing wave patterns, coherence, and clustering, we provide a systematic way to identify and interpret the functionality of the hidden state channels, paving the way to understand and control higher-level language pattern formation. In addition, we investigate the Poisson statistics of spelling errors in text sequence generation across various levels of model training and observe a phase-transition-like process. As coherence builds up, there is a competition between the generation of correct and misspelled words. However, once the model is adequately trained and significant coherence has emerged, the coherent process becomes strong enough to effectively suppress spelling errors, preventing the cascade amplification of defects. The distribution of correct spellings transitions from Poissonian to Sub-Poissonian, while the distribution of misspellings shows the opposite trend. By leveraging concepts and techniques from quantum physics, we gain novel insights into the dynamics of the small GPT. This approach can be extended to larger language models that exhibit more complex coherent language patterns, opening up opportunities to interpret their emergent capabilities and develop more specialized models.

Peering into the Milky Way by FAST: IV. Identification of two new Galactic supernova remnants G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9

A 5$^{\circ}$ $\times$ 7$^{\circ}$ sky area containing two large radio structures of G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9 with a size of about 2.5$^{\circ}$ and 3.5$^{\circ}$ respectively is scanned by using the L-band 19-beam receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The FAST L-band receiver covers a frequency range of 1.0-1.5 GHz. Commissioning of the receiving system, including the measurements of the half-power beam width, gain, and main-beam efficiency is made by observing the calibrators. The multi-channel spectroscopy backend mounted to the receiver allows an in-band spectral-index determination. The brightness-temperature spectral indices of both objects are measured to be $β$ $\sim$ $-$2.6 to $-$2.7. Polarized emission is detected from the archival Effelsberg $λ$11 cm data for all the shell structures of G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9. These results clearly indicate a non-thermal synchrotron emitting nature, confirming that G203.1+6.6 and G206.7+5.9 are large shell-type supernova remnants (SNRs). Based on morphological correlation between the radio continuum emission of G206.7+5.9 and the HI structures, the kinematic distance to this new SNR is estimated to be about 440 pc, placing it in the Local Arm.

Peering into the Milky Way by FAST: II. Ionized gas in the inner Galactic disk revealed by the piggyback line observations of the FAST GPPS survey

As one of the major components of the interstellar medium, the ionized gas in our Milky Way, especially the low-density diffuse component, has not been extensively observed in the radio band. The Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey covers the sky area within the Galactic latitude of $\pm10^\circ$ around the Galactic plane visible by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), and the spectral line data are simultaneously recorded during the pulsar survey observations. With an integration time of 5 minutes for each beam, the GPPS survey project provides the most sensitive piggyback spectra for tens of radio recombination lines (RRLs) in the band of 1000$-$1500 MHz for H$nα$, He$nα$, C$nα$, as well as H$nβ$ and H$nγ$. We processed the spectral data of RRLs, and obtained a sensitive averaged H$nα$ RRL map of a sky area of 88 square degrees in the inner Galaxy of 33$^\circ$ $\leqslant l \leqslant$ 55$^\circ$ and $|b| \leqslant$ 2.0$^\circ$. The final spectral data of the H$nα$ RRLs have a spatial resolution of $\sim$3$^\prime$, a spectral resolution of 2.2 km s$^{-1}$, and a typical spectral rms noise of 0.25 mJy beam$^{-1}$ or 6.3 mK in main-beam brightness temperature. The new H$nα$ RRL map shows complex structural features dominated by a number of HII regions and large extended diffuse ionized gas regions. We detect about 94% of the known HII regions and confirm 43 WISE HII regions in the observed sky area. Several large HII regions or star-forming complexes in the distant outer Galaxy are resolved in the map of H$nα$ RRLs. Extended RRL features of the diffuse ionized gas are detected. The RRL data products of the GPPS survey will be published and updated at http://zmtt.bao.ac.cn/MilkyWayFAST/

Peering into the Milky Way by FAST: I. Exquisite HI structures in the inner Galactic disk from the piggyback line observations of the FAST GPPS survey

Neutral hydrogen (HI) is the fundamental component of the interstellar medium. The Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey is designed for hunting pulsars by using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) from the visible Galactic plane within $|b| \leq 10^{\circ}$. The survey observations are conducted with the L-band 19-beam receiver in the frequency range of 1.0 $-$ 1.5 GHz, and each pointing has an integration time of 5 minutes. The piggyback spectral data simultaneously recorded during the FAST GPPS survey are great resources for studies on the Galactic HI distribution and ionized gas. We process the piggyback HI data of the FAST GPPS survey in the region of $33^{\circ} \leq l \leq 55^{\circ}$ and $|b| \leq 2^{\circ}$. The rms of the data cube is found to be approximately 40 mK at a velocity resolution of $0.1$ km s$^{-1}$, placing it the most sensitive observations of the Galactic HI by far. The high velocity resolution and high sensitivity of the FAST GPPS HI data enable us to detect weak exquisite HI structures in the interstellar medium. HI absorption line with great details can be obtained against bright continuum sources. The FAST GPPS survey piggyback HI data cube will be released and updated on the web: http://zmtt.bao.ac.cn/MilkyWayFAST/.

Antiferromagnetic fluctuations and orbital-selective Mott transition in the van der Waals ferromagnet Fe3-xGeTe2

Fe3-xGeTe2 is a layered magnetic van der Waals material of interest for both fundamental and applied research. Despite the observation of intriguing physical properties, open questions exist even on the basic features related to magnetism: is it a simple ferromagnet or are there antiferromagnetic regimes and are the moments local or itinerant. Here, we demonstrate that antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations coexist with the ferromagnetism through comprehensive elastic and inelastic neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements. Our realistic dynamical mean-field theory calculations reveal that the competing magnetic fluctuations are driven by an orbital selective Mott transition, where only the plane-perpendicular a1g orbital of the Fe(3d) manifold remains itinerant. Our results highlight the multi-orbital character in Fe3-xGeTe2 that supports a rare coexistence of local and itinerant physics within this material.

WALLABY Pre-Pilot and Pilot Survey: the Tully Fisher Relation in Eridanus, Hydra, Norma and NGC4636 fields

The WALLABY pilot survey has been conducted using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). The integrated 21-cm HI line spectra are formed in a very different manner compared to usual single-dish spectra Tully-Fisher measurements. It is thus extremely important to ensure that slight differences (e.g. biases due to missing flux) are quantified and understood in order to maximise the use of the large amount of data becoming available soon. This article is based on four fields for which the data are scientifically interesting by themselves. The pilot data discussed here consist of 614 galaxy spectra at a rest wavelength of 21cm. Of these spectra, 472 are of high enough quality to be used to potentially derive distances using the Tully-Fisher relation. We further restrict the sample to the 251 galaxies whose inclination is sufficiently close to edge-on. For these, we derive Tully-Fisher distances using the deprojected WALLABY velocity widths combined with infrared (WISE W1) magnitudes. The resulting Tully-Fisher distances for the Eridanus, Hydra, Norma and NGC 4636 clusters are 21.5, 53.5, 69.4 and 23.0 Mpc respectively, with uncertainties of 5--10\%, which are better or equivalent to the ones obtained in studies using data obtained with giant single dish telescopes. The pilot survey data show the benefits of WALLABY over previous giant single-dish telescope surveys. WALLABY is expected to detect around half a million galaxies with a mean redshift of $z = 0.05 (200 Mpc)$. This study suggests that about 200,000 Tully-Fisher distances might result from the survey.

PDO-s3DCNNs: Partial Differential Operator Based Steerable 3D CNNs

Steerable models can provide very general and flexible equivariance by formulating equivariance requirements in the language of representation theory and feature fields, which has been recognized to be effective for many vision tasks. However, deriving steerable models for 3D rotations is much more difficult than that in the 2D case, due to more complicated mathematics of 3D rotations. In this work, we employ partial differential operators (PDOs) to model 3D filters, and derive general steerable 3D CNNs, which are called PDO-s3DCNNs. We prove that the equivariant filters are subject to linear constraints, which can be solved efficiently under various conditions. As far as we know, PDO-s3DCNNs are the most general steerable CNNs for 3D rotations, in the sense that they cover all common subgroups of $SO(3)$ and their representations, while existing methods can only be applied to specific groups and representations. Extensive experiments show that our models can preserve equivariance well in the discrete domain, and outperform previous works on SHREC'17 retrieval and ISBI 2012 segmentation tasks with a low network complexity.

Understanding temperature-dependent SU($3$) spin dynamics in the $S=1$ antiferromagnet Ba$_2$FeSi$_2$O$_7$

Quantum magnets admit more than one classical limit and $N$-level systems with strong single-ion anisotropy are expected to be described by a classical approximation based on SU($N$) coherent states. Here we test this hypothesis by modeling finite temperature inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data of the effective spin-one antiferromagnet \bfso{}. The measured dynamic structure factor is calculated with a generalized Landau-Lifshitz dynamics for SU($3$) spins. Unlike the traditional classical limit based on SU($2$) coherent states, the results obtained with classical SU($3$) spins are in good agreement with the measured temperature-dependent spectrum. The SU($3$) approach developed here provides a general framework to understand the broad class of materials comprising weakly coupled antiferromagnetic dimers, trimers, or tetramers, and magnets with strong single-ion anisotropy.

Evidence for pressure induced unconventional quantum criticality in the coupled spin ladder antiferromagnet C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$

Quantum phase transitions in quantum matter occur at zero temperature between distinct ground states by tuning a nonthermal control parameter. Often, they can be accurately described within the Landau theory of phase transitions, similarly to conventional thermal phase transitions. However, this picture can break down under certain circumstances. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 ladder compound C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$. Single-crystal heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the N$\rm \acute{e}$el-ordered phase breaks down beyond a critical pressure of $P_{\rm c}$$\sim$1.0 GPa through a continuous quantum phase transition. Estimates of the critical exponents suggest that this transition may fall outside the traditional Landau paradigm. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra at 1.3 GPa are characterized by two well-separated gapped modes, including one continuum-like and another resolution-limited excitation in distinct scattering channels, which further indicates an exotic quantum-disordered phase above $P_{\rm c}$.

Merging Multigrid Optimization with SESOP

A merger of two optimization frameworks is introduced: SEquential Subspace OPtimization (SESOP) with MultiGrid (MG) optimization. At each iteration of the algorithm, the search direction implied by the coarse-grid correction process of MG is added to the low dimensional search-space of SESOP, which includes the preconditioned gradient and search directions involving the previous iterates, called {\em history}. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach. We then study the asymptotic convergence factor of the two-level version of SESOP-MG (dubbed SESOP-TG) for optimization of quadratic functions, and derive approximately optimal fixed parameters, which may reduce the computational overhead for such problems significantly.

Decay and renormalization of a longitudinal mode in a quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet

An ongoing challenge in the study of quantum materials, is to reveal and explain collective quantum effects in spin systems where interactions between different modes types are important. Here we approach this problem through a combined experimental and theoretical study of interacting transverse and longitudinal modes in an easy-plane quantum magnet near a continuous quantum phase transition. Our inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Ba$_{2}$FeSi$_{2}O$_{7}$ reveal the emergence, decay, and renormalization of a longitudinal mode throughout the Brillouin zone. The decay of the longitudinal mode is particularly pronounced at the zone center. To account for the many-body effects of the interacting low-energy modes in anisotropic magnets, we generalize the standard spin-wave theory. The measured mode decay and renormalization is reproduced by including all one-loop corrections. The theoretical framework developed here is broadly applicable to quantum magnets with more than one type of low energy mode.

On Adapting Nesterov's Scheme to Accelerate Iterative Methods for Linear Problems

Nesterov's well-known scheme for accelerating gradient descent in convex optimization problems is adapted to accelerating stationary iterative solvers for linear systems. Compared with classical Krylov subspace acceleration methods, the proposed scheme requires more iterations, but it is trivial to implement and retains essentially the same computational cost as the unaccelerated method. An explicit formula for a fixed optimal parameter is derived in the case where the stationary iteration matrix has only real eigenvalues, based only on the smallest and largest eigenvalues. The fixed parameter, and corresponding convergence factor, are shown to maintain their optimality when the iteration matrix also has complex eigenvalues that are contained within an explicitly defined disk in the complex plane. A comparison to Chebyshev acceleration based on the same information of the smallest and largest real eigenvalues (dubbed Restricted Information Chebyshev acceleration) demonstrates that Nesterov's scheme is more robust in the sense that it remains optimal over a larger domain when the iteration matrix does have some complex eigenvalues. Numerical tests validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme. This work generalizes and extends the results of [1, Lemmas 3.1 and 3.2 and Theorem 3.3].

Magnetic Excitations of the Hybrid Multiferroic (ND4)2FeCl5D2O

We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the hybrid molecule-based multiferroic compound (ND4)2FeCl5D2O in the zero-field incommensurate cycloidal phase and the high-field quasi-collinear phase. The spontaneous electric polarization changes its direction concurrently with the field-induced magnetic transition, from mostly aligned with the crystallographic a-axis to the c-axis. To account for such change of polarization direction, the underlying multiferroic mechanism was proposed to switch from the spin-current model induced via the inverse Dzyalloshinskii-Moriya interaction to the p-d hybridization model. We perform a detailed analysis of the inelastic neutron data of (ND4)2FeCl5D2O using linear spin-wave theory to quantify magnetic interaction strengths and investigate possible impact of different multiferroic mechanisms on the magnetic couplings. Our result reveals that the spin dynamics of both multiferroic phases can be well-described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with an easy-plane anisotropy. We do not find notable differences between the optimal model parameters of the two phases. The hierarchy of exchange couplings and the balance among frustrated interactions remain the same between two phases, suggesting that magnetic interactions in (ND4)2FeCl5D2O are much more robust than the electric polarization in response to delicate reorganizations of the electronic degrees of freedom in an applied magnetic field.

Diffraction Tomography with Helmholtz Equation: Efficient and Robust Multigrid-Based Solver

Diffraction tomography is a noninvasive technique that estimates the refractive indices of unknown objects and involves an inverse-scattering problem governed by the wave equation. Recent works have shown the benefit of nonlinear models of wave propagation that account for multiple scattering and reflections. In particular, the Lippmann-Schwinger~(LiS) model defines an inverse problem to simulate the wave propagation. Although accurate, this model is hard to solve when the samples are highly contrasted or have a large physical size. In this work, we introduce instead a Helmholtz-based nonlinear model for inverse scattering. To solve the corresponding inverse problem, we propose a robust and efficient multigrid-based solver. Moreover, we show that our method is a suitable alternative to the LiS model, especially for strongly scattering objects. Numerical experiments on simulated and real data demonstrate the effectiveness of the Helmholtz model, as well as the efficiency of the proposed multigrid method.
