Free limits of free algebras

Consider a diagram $\cdots \to F_3 \to F_2\to F_1$ of algebraic systems, where $F_n$ denotes the free object on $n$ generators and the connecting maps send the extra generator to some distinguished trivial element. We prove that (a) if the $F_i$ are free associative algebras over a fixed field then the limit in the category of graded algebras is again free on a set of homogeneous generators; (b) on the other hand, the limit in the category of associative (ungraded) algebras is a free formal power series algebra on a set of homogeneous elements, and (c) if the $F_i$ are free Lie algebras then the limit in the category of graded Lie algebras is again free.

Quantum versus Classical Spin Fragmentation in Dipolar Kagome Ice Ho3Mg2Sb3O14

A promising route to realize entangled magnetic states combines geometrical frustration with quantum-tunneling effects. Spin-ice materials are canonical examples of frustration, and Ising spins in a transverse magnetic field are the simplest many-body model of quantum tunneling. Here, we show that the tripod kagome lattice material Ho${_3}$Mg${_2}$Sb${_3}$O${_{14}}$ unites an ice-like magnetic degeneracy with quantum-tunneling terms generated by an intrinsic splitting of the Ho$^{3+}$ ground-state doublet, which is further coupled to a nuclear spin bath. Using neutron scattering and thermodynamic experiments, we observe a symmetry-breaking transition at $T^{\ast}\approx0.32$ K to a remarkable state with three peculiarities: a concurrent recovery of magnetic entropy associated with the strongly coupled electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom; a fragmentation of the spin into periodic and ice-like components; and persistent inelastic magnetic excitations down to $T\approx0.12$ K. These observations deviate from expectations of classical spin fragmentation on a kagome lattice, but can be understood within a model of dipolar kagome ice under a homogeneous transverse magnetic field, which we survey with exact diagonalization on small clusters and mean-field calculations. In Ho${_3}$Mg${_2}$Sb${_3}$O${_{14}}$, hyperfine interactions dramatically alter the single-ion and collective properties, and suppress possible quantum correlations, rendering the fragmentation with predominantly single-ion quantum fluctuations. Our results highlight the crucial role played by hyperfine interactions in frustrated quantum magnets, and motivate further investigations of the role of quantum fluctuations on partially-ordered magnetic states.

Forecasting for Social Good

Forecasting plays a critical role in the development of organisational business strategies. Despite a considerable body of research in the area of forecasting, the focus has largely been on the financial and economic outcomes of the forecasting process as opposed to societal benefits. Our motivation in this study is to promote the latter, with a view to using the forecasting process to advance social and environmental objectives such as equality, social justice and sustainability. We refer to such forecasting practices as Forecasting for Social Good (FSG) where the benefits to society and the environment take precedence over economic and financial outcomes. We conceptualise FSG and discuss its scope and boundaries in the context of the "Doughnut theory". We present some key attributes that qualify a forecasting process as FSG: it is concerned with a real problem, it is focused on advancing social and environmental goals and prioritises these over conventional measures of economic success, and it has a broad societal impact. We also position FSG in the wider literature on forecasting and social good practices. We propose an FSG maturity framework as the means to engage academics and practitioners with research in this area. Finally, we highlight that FSG: (i) cannot be distilled to a prescriptive set of guidelines, (ii) is scalable, and (iii) has the potential to make significant contributions to advancing social objectives.

Magnetic Field Induced Phase Transition in Spinel GeNi2O4

Cubic spinel GeNi2O4 exhibits intriguing magnetic properties with two successive antiferromagnetic phase transitions (TN1 12.1 and TN2 11.4 K) with the absence of any structural transition. We have performed detailed heat capacity and magnetic measurements in different crystallographic orientations. A new magnetic phase in presence of magnetic field (H > 4 T) along the [111] direction is revealed, which is not observed when the magnetic field is applied along the [100] and [110] directions. High field neutron powder diffraction measurements confirm such a change in magnetic phase, which could be ascribed to a spin reorientation in the presence of magnetic field. A strong magnetic anisotropy and competing magnetic interactions play a crucial role on the complex magnetic behavior in this cubic system.

Magnetic asymmetry induced anomalous spin-orbit torque in IrMn

We demonstrate an anomalous spin-orbit torque induced by the broken magnetic symmetry in the antiferromagnet IrMn. We study the magnetic structure of three phases of IrMn thin films using neutron diffraction technique. The magnetic mirror symmetry M' is broken laterally in both L10-IrMn and L12-IrMn3 but not γ-IrMn3. We observe an out-of-plane damping-like spin-orbit torque in both L10-IrMn/permalloy and L12-IrMn3/permalloy bilayers but not in γ-IrMn3/permalloy. This is consistent with both the symmetry analysis on the effects of a broken M' on spin-orbit torque and the theoretical predictions of the spin Hall effect and the Rashba-Edelstein effect. In addition, the measured spin-orbit torque efficiencies are 0.61+-0.01, 1.01+-0.03 and 0.80+-0.01 for the L10, L12 and γ phases, respectively. Our work highlights the critical roles of the magnetic asymmetry in spin-orbit torque generation.

An 860 MHz Wireless Surface Acoustic Wave Sensor with a Metal-Organic Framework Sensing Layer for CO2 and CH4

Wireless and passive surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices with nanoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) sensing layers are attractive gas sensors for applications in many fields such as energy industries and air pollution control. Here, we report on enhancing the sensitivity and detection limit of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) MOF-coated SAW reflective delay line mass sensors by increasing the operating frequency for sensitive detection of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) at ambient conditions. In particular, we show at least four times higher sensitivity of an 860 MHz (4-μm periodicity) SAW reflective delay line coated with a 240 nm thick ZIF-8 compared to the sensitivity of a 430 MHz (8-μm periodicity) otherwise identical sensor device to the targeted gases. The detection limits of the higher frequency wireless devices for CO2 and CH4 were estimated to be 0.91 vol-% and 7.01 vol-%, respectively. The enhanced sensitivity for higher frequency devices is explained in terms of the frequency dependent acoustic wave energy confinement.

Solving RED with Weighted Proximal Methods

REgularization by Denoising (RED) is an attractive framework for solving inverse problems by incorporating state-of-the-art denoising algorithms as the priors. A drawback of this approach is the high computational complexity of denoisers, which dominate the computation time. In this paper, we apply a general framework called weighted proximal methods (WPMs) to solve RED efficiently. We first show that two recently introduced RED solvers (using the fixed point and accelerated proximal gradient methods) are particular cases of WPMs. Then we show by numerical experiments that slightly more sophisticated variants of WPM can lead to reduced run times for RED by requiring a significantly smaller number of calls to the denoiser.

Noncollinear magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling in buckled honeycomb Co$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$:A single crystal neutron diffraction study

Through analysis of single crystal neutron diffraction data, we present the magnetic structures of magnetoelectric Co4Nb2O9 under various magnetic fields. In zero-field, neutron diffraction experiments below TN=27 K reveal that the Co2+ moments order primarily along the a* direction without any spin canting along the c axis, manifested by the magnetic symmetry C2/c'. The moments of nearest neighbor Co atoms order ferromagnetically with a small cant away from the next nearest neighbor Co moments along the c axis. In the applied magnetic field H//a, three magnetic domains were aligned with their major magnetic moments perpendicular to the magnetic field with no indication of magnetic phase transitions. The influences of magnetic fields on the magnetic structures associated with the observed magnetoelectric coupling are discussed.

Cluster Frustration in the Breathing Pyrochlore Magnet LiGaCr4S8

We present a comprehensive neutron scattering study of the breathing pyrochlore magnet LiGaCr4S8. We observe an unconventional magnetic excitation spectrum with a separation of high and low-energy spin dynamics in the correlated paramagnetic regime above a spin-freezing transition at 12(2) K. By fitting to magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we parameterize the spin Hamiltonian. We find that interactions are ferromagnetic within the large and small tetrahedra of the breathing pyrochlore lattice, but antiferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions are also essential to explain our data, in qualitative agreement with density-functional theory predictions [Ghoshet al.,npj Quantum Mater.4, 63 (2019)]. We explain the origin of geometrical frustration in LiGaCr4S8 interms of net antiferromagnetic coupling between emergent tetrahedral spin clusters that occupy a face-centered lattice. Our results provide insight into the emergence of frustration in the presence of strong further-neighbor couplings, and a blueprint for the determination of magnetic interactions in classical spin liquids.

Effect of Ge-substitution on Magnetic Properties in the Itinerant Chiral Magnet MnSi

We have investigated the effect of Ge-substitution to the magnetic ordering in the B20 itinerant chiral magnet MnSi prepared by melting and annealing under ambient pressure. From metallurgical survey, the solubility limit of Ge was found to be $x=0.144(5)$ with annealing temperature $T_\mathrm{an} = 1073$ K. Magnetization measurements on MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ samples show that the helical ordering temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ increases rapidly in the low-$x$ range, whereas it becomes saturated at higher concentration $x>~0.1$. The Ge substitution also increases both the saturation magnetization $M_\mathrm{s}$ and the critical field to the fully polarized state $H_\mathrm{c2}$. In contrast to the saturation behavior of $T_\mathrm{c}$, those parameters increase linearly up to the highest Ge concentration investigated. In the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram, we found enlargement of the skyrmion phase region for large $x$ samples. We, furthermore, observed the non-linear behavior of helical modulation vector $k$ as a function of Ge concentration, which can be described qualitatively using the mean field approximation.

Novel Excitations near Quantum Criticality in Geometrically Frustrated Antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_{3}$

Investigation of materials that exhibit quantum phase transition provides valuable insights into fundamental problems in physics. We present neutron scattering under pressure in a triangular-lattice antiferromagnet which has a quantum disorder in the low-pressure phase and a noncollinear structure in the high-pressure phase. The neutron spectrum continuously evolves through the critical pressure; a single mode in the disordered state becomes soft with the pressure, and it splits into gapless and gapped modes in the ordered phase. Extended spin-wave theory reveals that the longitudinal and transverse fluctuations of spins are hybridized in the modes because of the noncollinearity, and novel magnetic excitations are formed. We report a new hybridization of the phase and amplitude fluctuations of the order parameter in a spontaneously symmetry-broken state.

2MTF - VII. 2MASS Tully-Fisher survey final data release: distances for 2,062 nearby spiral galaxies

We present the final distance measurements for the 2MASS Tully-Fisher (2MTF) survey. The final 2MTF catalogue contains 2,062 nearby spiral galaxies in the CMB frame velocity range of 600 km s$^{-1}$ $< cz < 10,000$ km s$^{-1}$ with a mean velocity of 4,805 km s$^{-1}$. The main update in this release is the replacement of some archival HI data with newer ALFALFA data. Using the 2MTF template relation, we calculate the distances and peculiar velocities of all 2MTF galaxies. The mean uncertainties of the linear distance measurements are around 22\% in all three infrared bands. 2MTF measurements agree well with the distances from the Cosmicflows-3 compilation, which contains 1,117 common galaxies, including 28 with SNIa distance measurements. Using distances estimated from the `3-bands combined' 2MTF sample and a $χ^2$ minimization method, we find best-fit bulk flow amplitudes of $308 \pm 26$ km s$^{-1}$, $318 \pm 29$ km s$^{-1}$, and $286 \pm 25$ km s$^{-1}$ at depths of $R_I = $ 20, 30 and 40 $h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$, respectively, which is consistent with the $Λ$CDM model and with previous 2MTF results with different estimation techniques and a preliminary catalogue.

High-energy spin fluctuation in low-$T_{\rm c}$ iron-based superconductor LaFePO$_{0.9}$

Spin fluctuations are widely believed to play an important role in the superconducting mechanisms of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Spin fluctuations have been observed in iron-based superconductors as well. However, in some iron-based superconductors such as LaFePO$_{0.9}$, they have not been observed by inelastic neutron scattering (INS). LaFePO$_{0.9}$ is an iron-based superconductor with a low superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$= 5 K), where line nodes are observed in the superconducting gap function. The line-node symmetry typically originates from sign reversal of the order parameter in spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity. This contradiction has been a long-standing mystery of this superconductor. Herein, spin fluctuations were found at high energies such as 30$-$50 meV with comparable intensities to an optimally doped LaFeAs(O,F). Based on this finding, the line-node symmetry can be explained naturally as spin-fluctuation-mediated superconductivity.

Acceleration of RED via Vector Extrapolation

Models play an important role in inverse problems, serving as the prior for representing the original signal to be recovered. REgularization by Denoising (RED) is a recently introduced general framework for constructing such priors using state-of-the-art denoising algorithms. Using RED, solving inverse problems is shown to amount to an iterated denoising process. However, as the complexity of denoising algorithms is generally high, this might lead to an overall slow algorithm. In this paper, we suggest an accelerated technique based on vector extrapolation (VE) to speed-up existing RED solvers. Numerical experiments validate the obtained gain by VE, leading to a substantial savings in computations compared with the original fixed-point method.

Optimized Structured Sparse Sensing Matrices for Compressive Sensing

We consider designing a robust structured sparse sensing matrix consisting of a sparse matrix with a few non-zero entries per row and a dense base matrix for capturing signals efficiently We design the robust structured sparse sensing matrix through minimizing the distance between the Gram matrix of the equivalent dictionary and the target Gram of matrix holding small mutual coherence. Moreover, a regularization is added to enforce the robustness of the optimized structured sparse sensing matrix to the sparse representation error (SRE) of signals of interests. An alternating minimization algorithm with global sequence convergence is proposed for solving the corresponding optimization problem. Numerical experiments on synthetic data and natural images show that the obtained structured sensing matrix results in a higher signal reconstruction than a random dense sensing matrix.

Bulk flow and shear in the local Universe: 2MTF and COSMICFLOWS-3

The low-order kinematic moments of galaxies, namely bulk flow and shear, enables us to test whether theoretical models can accurately describe the evolution of the mass density field in the nearby Universe. We use the so-called etaMLE maximum likelihood estimator in logdistance space to measure thesemoments from a combined sample of the 2MASS Tully-Fisher (2MTF) survey and the COSMICFLOWS-3 (CF3) compilation. Galaxies common between 2MTF and CF3 demonstrate a small zero-point difference of -0.016+-0.002 dex.We test the etaMLE on 16 mock 2MTF survey catalogues in order to explore how well the etaMLE recovers the true moments, and the effect of sample anisotropy. On the scale size of 37 Mpc/h, we find that the bulk flow of the local Universe is 259 +- 15 km/h in the direction is (l,b)=(300+-4, 23+-3) (Galactic coordinates). The average shear amplitude is 1.7+-0.4 h km/s/Mpc. We use a variable window function to explore the bulk and shear moments as a function of depth. In all cases, the measurements are consistent with the predictions of the L cold dark matter (LCDM) model.

Analysis of Outage Probabilities for Cooperative NOMA Users with Imperfect CSI

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising spectrally-efficient technology to meet the massive data requirement of the next-generation wireless communication networks. In this paper, we consider a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (CNOMA) networks consisting of a base station and two users, where the near user serves as a decode-and-forward relay to help the far user, and investigate the outage probability of the CNOMA users under two different types of channel estimation errors. For both CNOMA users, we derive the closed-form expressions of the outage probability and discuss the asymptotic characteristics for the outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. Our results show that for the case of constant variance of the channel estimation error, the outage probability of two users are limited by a performance bottleneck which related to the value of the error variance. In contrast, there is no such performance bottleneck for the outage probability when the variance of the channel estimation error deceases with SNR, and in this case the diversity gain is fully achieved by the far user.
