Rational Solitons in the Parity-Time-Symmetric Nonlocal Nonlinear Schrödinger Model

In this paper, via the generalized Darboux transformation, rational soliton solutions are derived for the parity-time-symmetric nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model with the defocusing-type nonlinearity. We find that the first-order solution can exhibit the elastic interactions of rational antidark-antidark, dark-antidark, and antidark-dark soliton pairs on a continuous wave background, but there is no phase shift for the interacting solitons. Also, we discuss the degenerate case in which only one rational dark or antidark soliton survives. Moreover, we reveal that the second-order rational solution displays the interactions between two solitons with combined-peak-valley structures in the near-field regions, but each interacting soliton vanishes or evolves into a rational dark or antidark soliton as $|z|\ra \infty$. In addition, we numerically examine the stability of the first- and second-order rational soliton solutions.

Darboux transformation and analytic solutions of the discrete \PT-symmetric nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation

In this letter, for the discrete parity-time-symmetric nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we construct the Darboux transformation, which provides an algebraic iterative algorithm to obtain a series of analytic solutions from a known one. To illustrate, the breathing-soliton solutions, periodic-wave solutions and localized rational soliton solutions are derived with the zero and plane-wave solutions as the seeds. The properties of those solutions are also discussed, and particularly the asymptotic analysis reveals all possible cases of the interaction between the discrete rational dark and antidark solitons.

Visualization of unidirectional optical waveguide using topological photonic crystals made of dielectric material

The introduction of topology unravels a new chapter of physics. Topological systems provide unique edge/interfacial quantum states which are expected to contribute to the development of novel spintronics and open the door to robust quantum computation. Optical systems can also benefit from topology. Engineering locally in real space a honeycomb photonic crystal with double Dirac cone in its photonic dispersion, topology transition in photonic band structure is induced and a pseudospin unidirectional optical channel is created and demonstrated by the backscattering immune electromagnetic transportation. The topological photonic crystal made of dielectric material can pave the road towards steering light propagations and contribute to novel communication technology.

Simultaneous band gap narrowing and carrier lifetime prolongation of organic-inorganic trihalide perovskites

The organic-inorganic hybrid lead trihalide perovskites have been emerging as the most attractive photovoltaic material. As regulated by Shockley-Queisser theory, a formidable materials science challenge for the next level improvement requires further band gap narrowing for broader absorption in solar spectrum, while retaining or even synergistically prolonging the carrier lifetime, a critical factor responsible for attaining the near-band gap photovoltage. Herein, by applying controllable hydrostatic pressure we have achieved unprecedented simultaneous enhancement in both band gap narrowing and carrier lifetime prolongation (up to 70~100% increase) under mild pressures at ~0.3 GPa. The pressure-induced modulation on pure hybrid perovskites without introducing any adverse chemical or thermal effect clearly demonstrates the importance of band edges on the photon-electron interaction and maps a pioneering route towards a further boost in their photovoltaic performance.

Squarkonium, diquarkonium and octetonium at the LHC and their di-photon decays

Motivated by the recent di-photon excess by both ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC, we systematically investigate the production and di-photon decay of onia formed by pair of all possible color exotic scalars in minimal extension. When such scalar massive meta-stable colored and charged (MMCC) particles are produced in pair near threshold, $η$ onium can be formed and decay into di-photon through annihilation as $pp\to η\to γγ$. Squarkonium is formed by meta-stable squarks in supersymmetric models such as stoponium. Diquarkonium is formed by meta-stable color sextet diquarks which may be realized in the Pati-Salam model. Octetonium is formed by color octet scalars bosons as in the Manohar-Wise model. Stoponium prediction is much smaller than the required signal to account for the di-photon excess. Due to the enhancement factor from color and electric charge, predictions of diquarkonium and octetonium are of $\cal O$(10 fb) which are significantly greater than the stoponium prediction. Since the color enhancement also results in large production at the colliders, such light color exotic states of $\cal O$(375 GeV) suffer from severe direct search constraints. On the other hand, if their dominant decay mode involve top quark, they may be buried in the $t\bar{t}$ plus jets samples and can potentially be searched via $t+j$ resonance.

Light Higgsino from $A_t$ Dilemma in Rare $B$-decays

In the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), large chiral symmetry breaking term $A_t$, which plays an important role in Higgs mass, may significantly contribute in flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) processes $B\to X_{s}γ$ and $B_{s}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$. Though the above processes can both be categorized as $b\to s$ transitions, the two rare decays behave completely different in MSSM. With an on-shell photon in the final state, helicity of initial state $b$-quark and final state $s$-quark must be flipped in $B\to X_{s}γ$, which corresponds to the simultaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and electroweak symmetry. The common feature is shared by fermion mass generation. Same as radiative mass generation in MSSM, Peccei-Quinn and $R$ symmetry breaking contributions, for example from a Higgsino-stop loop when $μA_t<0$, may significantly cancel the contribution from charged Higgs and reduce the prediction of $B\to X_{s}γ$. For the latter process, including Babu-Kolda FCNC proportional to $μA_t$, $B_{s}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$ is mediated by a scalar $H_d$ boson which corresponds to chiral symmetry breaking. In addition, as a result of interference among the Higgs extension sector and $Z$ contributions, in the region of $μA_t <0$ which is favored by $B\to X_{s}γ$, there may simultaneously exist large enhancement in $B_{s}\to μ^{+}μ^{-}$. However, we still find viable parameter region with light Higgsino of a few hundreds GeV when charged Higgs contribution is not negligible with $M_A$ of 400 GeV.

Multi-objective Differential Evolution with Helper Functions for Constrained Optimization

Solving constrained optimization problems by multi-objective evolutionary algorithms has scored tremendous achievements in the last decade. Standard multi-objective schemes usually aim at minimizing the objective function and also the degree of constraint violation simultaneously. This paper proposes a new multi-objective method for solving constrained optimization problems. The new method keeps two standard objectives: the original objective function and the sum of degrees of constraint violation. But besides them, four more objectives are added. One is based on the feasible rule. The other three come from the penalty functions. This paper conducts an initial experimental study on thirteen benchmark functions. A simplified version of CMODE is applied to solving multi-objective optimization problems. Our initial experimental results confirm our expectation that adding more helper functions could be useful. The performance of SMODE with more helper functions (four or six) is better than that with only two helper functions.

Multi-channel exchange-scattering spin polarimetry

Electron spin takes critical role in almost all novel phenomena discovered in modern condensed matter physics (High-temperature superconductivity, Kondo effect, Giant Magnetoresistance, topological insulator, quantum anomalous Hall effect, etc.). However, the measurements for electron spin is of poor quality which blocks the development of material sciences because of the low efficiency of spin polarimeter. Here we show an imaging type exchange-scattering spin polarimeter with 5 orders more efficiency compared with a classical Mott polarimeter. As a demonstration, the fine spin structure of electronic states in bismuth (111) is investigated, showing the strong Rashba type spin splitting behavior in both bulk and surface states. This improvement pave the way to study novel spin related phenomena with unprecedented accuracy.

Feasibility study of channeling acceleration experiment at the Fermilab ASTA facility

Crystal channeling technology has offered various opportunities in accelerator community with a viability of ultrahigh gradient (TV/m) acceleration for future HEP collider in Energy Frontier. The major challenge of the channeling acceleration is that ultimate acceleration gradients might require high power driver at hard x-ray regime (~ 40 keV), exceeding those conceivable for x-rays as of today, though x-ray lasers can efficiently excite solid plasma and accelerate particles inside a crystal channel. Moreover, only disposable crystal accelerators are possible at such high externally excited fields which would exceed the ionization thresholds destroying the atomic structure, so acceleration will take place only in a short time before full dissociation of the lattice. Carbon- based nanostructures have great potential with a wide range of flexibility and superior physical strength, which can be applied to channeling acceleration. This paper present beam-driven channeling acceleration concept with CNTs and discuss feasible experiments with the Advanced Superconducting Test Area (ASTA) in Fermilab and beyond.

Anti-dark and Mexican-hat solitons in the Sasa-Satsuma equation on the continuous wave background

In this letter, via the Darboux transformation method we construct new analytic soliton solutions for the Sasa-Satsuma equation which describes the femtosecond pulses propagation in a monomode fiber. We reveal that two different types of femtosecond solitons, i.e., the anti-dark (AD) and Mexican-hat (MH) solitons, can form on a continuous wave (CW) background, and numerically study their stability under small initial perturbations. Different from the common bright and dark solitons, the AD and MH solitons can exhibit both the resonant and elastic interactions, as well as various partially/completely inelastic interactions which are composed of such two fundamental interactions. In addition, we find that the energy exchange between some interacting soliton and the CW background may lead to one AD soliton changing into an MH one, or one MH soliton into an AD one.

Efficient Image Categorization with Sparse Fisher Vector

In object recognition, Fisher vector (FV) representation is one of the state-of-art image representations ways at the expense of dense, high dimensional features and increased computation time. A simplification of FV is attractive, so we propose Sparse Fisher vector (SFV). By incorporating locality strategy, we can accelerate the Fisher coding step in image categorization which is implemented from a collective of local descriptors. Combining with pooling step, we explore the relationship between coding step and pooling step to give a theoretical explanation about SFV. Experiments on benchmark datasets have shown that SFV leads to a speedup of several-fold of magnitude compares with FV, while maintaining the categorization performance. In addition, we demonstrate how SFV preserves the consistence in representation of similar local features.

High Order Structure Descriptors for Scene Images

Structure information is ubiquitous in natural scene images and it plays an important role in scene representation. In this paper, third order structure statistics (TOSS) and fourth order structure statistics (FOSS) are exploited to encode higher order structure information. Afterwards, based on the radial and normal slice of TOSS and FOSS, we propose the high order structure feature: third order structure feature (TOSF) and fourth order structure feature (FOSF). It is well known that scene images are well characterized by particular arrangements of their local structures, we divide the scene image into the non-overlapping sub-regions and compute the proposed higher order structural features among them. Then a scene classification is performed by using SVM classifier with these higher order structure features. The experimental results show that higher order structure statistics can deliver image structure information well and its spatial envelope has strong discriminative ability.

Towards Intrinsic Charge Transport in Monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide by Defect and Interface Engineering

Molybdenum disulfide is considered as one of the most promising two-dimensional semiconductors for electronic and optoelectronic device applications. So far, the charge transport in monolayer molybdenum disulfide is dominated by extrinsic factors such as charged impurities, structural defects and traps, leading to much lower mobility than the intrinsic limit. Here, we develop a facile low-temperature thiol chemistry to repair the sulfur vacancies and improve the interface, resulting in significant reduction of the charged impurities and traps. High mobility greater than 80cm2 V-1 s-1 is achieved in backgated monolayer molybdenum disulfide field-effect transistors at room temperature. Furthermore, we develop a theoretical model to quantitatively extract the key microscopic quantities that control the transistor performances, including the density of charged impurities, short-range defects and traps. Our combined experimental and theoretical study provides a clear path towards intrinsic charge transport in two-dimensional dichalcogenides for future high-performance device applications.

Pure leptonic proposal to $W^{+}W^{-}$ excess and neutrino mass generation

We investigate the TeV models for neutrino mass generation as candidate models to explain the recent 2$σ$ excess of leptonic $W^{+}W^{-}$ pair production at LHC. Several models with singly charged exotic states that may explain the excess require light masses completely excluded by LEP experiments. One possible model with new lepton doublets can fit the observation and evade all direct search bounds but with tuned Yukawa structure to satisfy lepton universality. The new exotic leptons $L^{\pm}$ decay into $L^{\pm}\to \ell^{\pm} ϕ$ where $ϕ$ is a light singlet scalar of $\cal O$(MeV) that decays into neutrinos. Drell-Yan production of $L^{+}L^{-}\to \ell^{+}\ell^{-}+\cancel{E}_{T}$ fits the excess and $L^{\pm}L^{0}\to \ell^{\pm}+\cancel{E}_{T}$ is completely buried in SM background.

Is polarization effect visible in leptonic SUSY searches?

On-shell effective theory approach has been widely used in search of various supersymmetric signals, in particular, gluino/squark pairs with long cascade decay chains in which complete matrix element calculations may encounter over-20 dimensional integrations. On the other hand, leptons from polarized chargino decays may show significant boost or anti-boost effect in some scenarios and simulation without polarization information may underestimate or overestimate the lepton $p_{T}$ cut efficiencies in the first place. We study the polarization effects in supersymmetry searches of multi-jets plus leptons final states. We find it justifiable for first two generations to only use on-shell effective theories. While for measurements related to third generation squarks, for instance, polarization effect of charginos from stop may reduce the lepton $p_{T}$ cut efficiencies in cross section measurements by $25\%$ when slepton contributions dominate in chargino decay or $W$ are on-shell. The signal is then underestimated if only on-shell effective theory approach is taken in simulation of signal and the real bound on squark/gluino should be more stringent.

Hopping Transport through Defect-induced Localized States in Molybdenum Disulfide

Molybdenum disulfide is a novel two-dimensional semiconductor with potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the nature of charge transport in back-gated devices still remains elusive as they show much lower mobility than theoretical calculations and native n-type doping. Here we report transport study in few-layer molybdenum disulfide, together with transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory. We provide direct evidence that sulfur vacancies exist in molybdenum disulfide, introducing localized donor states inside the bandgap. Under low carrier densities, the transport exhibits nearest-neighbor hopping at high temperatures and variable-range hopping at low temperatures, which can be well explained under Mott formalism. We suggest that the low-carrier-density transport is dominated by hopping via these localized gap states. Our study reveals the important role of short-range surface defects in tailoring the properties and device applications of molybdenum disulfide.

Highly-Efficient Charge Separation and Polaron Delocalization in Polymer-Fullerene Bulk-Heterojunctions: A Comparative Multi-Frequency EPR & DFT Study

The ongoing depletion of fossil fuels has led to an intensive search for additional renewable energy sources. Solar-based technologies could provide sufficient energy to satisfy the global economic demands in the near future. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are the most promising man-made devices for direct solar energy utilization. Understanding the charge separation and charge transport in PV materials at a molecular level is crucial for improving the efficiency of the solar cells. Here, we use light-induced EPR spectroscopy combined with DFT calculations to study the electronic structure of charge separated states in blends of polymers (P3HT, PCDTBT, and PTB7) and fullerene derivatives (C60-PCBM and C70-PCBM). Solar cells made with the same composites as active layers show power conversion efficiencies of 3.3% (P3HT), 6.1% (PCDTBT), and 7.3% (PTB7), respectively. Under illumination of these composites, two paramagnetic species are formed due to photo-induced electron transfer between the conjugated polymer and the fullerene. They are the positive, P+, and negative, P-, polarons on the polymer backbone and fullerene cage, respectively, and correspond to radical cations and radical anions. Using the high spectral resolution of high-frequency EPR (130 GHz), the EPR spectra of these species were resolved and principal components of the g-tensors were assigned. Light-induced pulsed ENDOR spectroscopy allowed the determination of 1H hyperfine coupling constants of photogenerated positive and negative polarons. The experimental results obtained for the different polymer-fullerene composites have been compared with DFT calculations, revealing that in all three systems the positive polaron is distributed over distances of 40-60 A on the polymer chain. This corresponds to about 15 thiophene units for P3HT, approximately three units PCDTBT, and about three to four units for PTB7. No spin density...

Optical absorption of silicon nanowires

We report on simulations and measurements of the optical absorption of silicon nanowires (NWs) versus their diameter. We first address the simulation of the optical absorption based on two different theoretical methods : the first one, based on the Green function formalism, is useful to calculate the scattering and absorption properties of a single or a finite set of NWs. The second one, based on the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method is well-adapted to deal with a periodic set of NWs. In both cases, an increase of the onset energy for the absorption is found with increasing diameter. Such effect is experimentally illustrated, when photoconductivity measurements are performed on single tapered Si nanowires connected between a set of several electrodes. An increase of the nanowire diameter reveals a spectral shift of the photocurrent intensity peak towards lower photon energies, that allows to tune the absorption onset from the ultraviolet radiations to the visible light spectrum.
