Universal meager $F_σ$-sets in locally compact manifolds

In each manifold $M$ modeled on a finite or infinite dimensional cube $[0,1]^n$ we construct a meager $F_σ$-subset $X\subset M$ which is universal meager in the sense that for each meager subset $A\subset M$ there is a homeomorphism $h:M\to M$ such that $h(A)\subset X$. We also prove that any two universal meager $F_σ$-sets in $M$ are ambiently homeomorphic.

Universal nowhere dense and meager sets in Menger manifolds

In each Menger manifold $M$ we construct: (i) a closed nowhere dense subset $M_0$ which is homeomorphic to $M$ and is universal nowhere dense in the sense that for each nowhere dense set $A\subset M$ there is a homeomorphism $h$ of $M$ such that $h(A)\subset M_0$; (ii) a meager $F_σ$-set $Σ_0\subset M$ which is universal meager in the sense that for each meager subset $B\subset M$ there is a homeomorphism $h$ of $M$ such that $h(B)\subset Σ_0$. Also we prove that any two universal meager $F_σ$-sets in $M$ are ambiently homeomorphic.

Universal nowhere dense subsets of locally compact manifolds

In each manifold $M$ modeled on a finite or infinite dimensional cube $[0,1]^n$ we construct a closed nowhere dense subset $S\subset M$ (called a spongy set) which is a universal nowhere dense set in $M$ in the sense that for each nowhere dense subset $A\subset M$ there is a homeomorphism $h:M\to M$ such that $h(A)\subset S$. The key tool in the construction of spongy sets is a theorem on topological equivalence of certain decompositions of manifolds. A special case of this theorem says that two vanishing cellular strongly shrinkable decompositions $\mathcal A,\mathcal B$ of a Hilbert cube manifold $M$ are topologically equivalent if any two non-singleton elements $A\in\mathcal A$ and $B\in\mathcal B$ of these decompositions are ambiently homeomorphic.

Hereditarily supercompact spaces

A topological space $X$ is called hereditarily supercompact if each closed subspace of X is supercompact. By a combined result of Bula, Nikiel, Tuncali, Tymchatyn, and Rudin, each monotonically normal compact Hausdorff space is hereditarily supercompact. A dyadic compact space is hereditarily supercompact if and only if it is metrizable. Under (MA + not CH) each separable hereditarily supercompact space is hereditarily separable and hereditarily Lindelöf. This implies that under (MA + not CH) a scattered compact space is metrizable if and only if it is separable and hereditarily supercompact. The hereditary supercompactness is not productive: the product [0,1] x αD of the closed interval and the one-point compactification αD of a discrete space D of cardinality |D|\ge non(M) is not hereditarily supercompact (but is Rosenthal compact and uniform Eberlein compact). Moreover, under the assumption cof(M)=ω_1 the space [0,1] x αD contains a closed subspace X which is first countable and hereditarily paracompact but not supercompact.

Diffeomorphism groups of non-compact manifolds endowed with the Whitney C^infty-topology

Suppose M is a non-compact connected n-manifold without boundary, DD(M) is the group of C^\infty-diffeomorphisms of M endowed with the Whitney C^\infty-topology and DD_0(M) is the identity connected component of DD(M), which is an open subgroup in the group DD_c(M) \subset DD(M) of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of M. It is shown that DD_0(M) is homeomorphic to N \times IR^\infty for an l_2-manifold N whose topological type is uniquely determined by the homotopy type of DD_0(M). For instance, DD_0(M) is homeomorphic to l_2 \times IR^\infty if n = 1, 2 or n = 3 and M is orientable and irreducible. We also show that for any compact connected n-manifold N with non-empty boundary \partial N the group DD_0(N - \partial N) is homeomorphic to DD_0(N; \partial N) \times IR^\infty, where DD_0(N;\partial N) is the identity component of the group DD(N;\partial N) of diffeomorphisms of N that do not move points of the boundary \partial N.

Asymptotic dimension and small subsets in locally compact topological groups

We prove that for a coarse space $X$ the ideal $S(X)$ of small subsets of $X$ coincides with the ideal $D_<(X)$ of subsets $A\subset X$ of asymptotic dimension $asdim(A)<asdim(X)$ provided that $X$ is coarsely equivalent to an Euclidean space $R^n$. Also we prove that for a locally compact Abelian group $X$, the equality $S(X)=D_<(X)$ holds if and only if the group $X$ is compactly generated.

The continuity properties of compact-preserving functions

A function $f:X\to Y$ between topological spaces is called {\em compact-preserving} if the image $f(K)$ of each compact subset $K\subset X$ is compact. We prove that a function $f:X\to Y$ defined on a strong Frechet space $X$ is compact-preserving if and only if for each point $x\in X$ there is a compact subset $K_x\subset Y$ such that for each neighborhood $O_{f(x)}\subset Y$ of $f(x)$ there is a neighborhood $O_x\subset X$ of $x$ such that $f(O_x)\subset O_{f(x)}\cup K_x$ and the set $K_x\setminus O_{f(x)}$ is finite. This characterization is applied to give an alternative proof of a classical characterization of continuous functions on locally connected metrizable spaces as functions that preserve compact and connected sets. Also we show that for each compact-preserving function $f:X\to Y$ defined on a (strong) Fréchet space $X$, the restriction $f|LI'_f$ (resp. $f|LI_f)$ is continuous. Here $LI_f$ is the set of points $x\in X$ of local infinity of $f$ and $LI'_f$ is the set of non-isolated points of the set $LI_f$. Suitable examples show that the obtained results cannot be improved.

On $\infty$-convex sets in spaces of scatteredly continuous functions

Given a topological space $X$, we study the structure of $\infty$-convex subsets in the space $SC_p(X)$ of scatteredly continuous functions on $X$. Our main result says that for a topological space $X$ with countable strong fan tightness, each potentially bounded $\infty$-convex subset $F\subset SC_p(X)$ is weakly discontinuous in the sense that each non-empty subset $A\subset X$ contains an open dense subset $U\subset A$ such that each function $f|U$, $f\in F$, is continuous. This implies that $F$ has network weight $nw(F)\le nw(X)$.

Topology of probability measure spaces, II

This paper is a follow-up to the author's work "Topology of probability measure space, I" devoted to investigation of the functors $\hat P$ and $P_τ$ of spaces of probability $τ$-smooth and Radon measures. In this part, we study the barycenter map for spaces of Radon probability measures. The obtained results are applied to show that the functor $\hat P$ is monadic in the category of metrizable spaces. Also we show that the functors $\hat P$ and $P_τ$ admit liftings to the category $BMetr$ of bounded metric spaces and also to the category $Unif$ of uniform spaces, and investigate properties of those liftings.

On character of points in the Higson corona of a metric space

We prove that for an unbounded metric space $X$, the minimal character $mχ(\check X)$ of a point of the Higson corona $\check X$ of $X$ is equal to $\mathfrak u$ if $X$ has asymptotically isolated balls and to $\max\{\mathfrak u,\mathfrak d\}$ otherwise. This implies that under $\mathfrak u<\mathfrak d$ a metric space $X$ of bounded geometry is coarsely equivalent to the Cantor macro-cube $2^{<\IN}$ if and only if $\dim(\check X)=0$ and $mχ(\check X)=\mathfrak d$. This contrasts with a result of Protasov saying that under CH the coronas of any two asymptotically zero-dimensional unbounded metric separable spaces are homeomorphic.

On Local Convexity Of Nonlinear Mappings Between Banach Spaces

We find conditions for a smooth nonlinear map $f:U\rightarrow V$ between open subsets of Hilbert or Banach spaces to be locally convex in the sense that for some $c$ and each positive $\varepsilon<c$ the image $% f(B_\varepsilon(x))$ of each $\varepsilon$-ball $B_\varepsilon(x)\subset U$ is convex. We give a lower bound on $c$ via the second order Lipschitz constant $\mathrm{Lip}_2(f)$, the Lipschitz-open constant $\mathrm{Lip}_o(f)$ of $f$, and the 2-convexity number $\mathrm{conv}_2(X)$ of the Banach space $% X$.

On σ-convex subsets in spaces of scatteredly continuous functions

We prove that for any topological space $X$ of countable tightness, each σ-convex subspace $\F$ of the space $SC_p(X)$ of scatteredly continuous real-valued functions on $X$ has network weight $nw(\F)\le nw(X)$. This implies that for a metrizable separable space $X$, each compact convex subset in the function space $SC_p(X)$ is metrizable. Another corollary says that two Tychonoff spaces $X,Y$ with countable tightness and topologically isomorphic linear topological spaces $SC_p(X)$ and $SC_p(Y)$ have the same network weight $nw(X)=nw(Y)$. Also we prove that each zero-dimensional separable Rosenthal compact space is homeomorphic to a compact subset of the function space $SC_p(ω^ω)$ over the space $ω^ω$ of irrationals.

Oscillator topologies on a paratopological group and related number invariants

We introduce and study oscillator topologies on paratopological groups and define certain related number invariants. As an application we prove that a Hausdorff paratopological group $G$ admits a weaker Hausdorff group topology provided $G$ is 3-oscillating. A paratopological group $G$ is 3-oscillating (resp. 2-oscillating) provided for any neighborhood $U$ of the unity $e$ of $G$ there is a neighborhood $V\subset G$ of $e$ such that $V^{-1}VV^{-1}\subset UU^{-1}U$ (resp. $V^{-1}V\subset UU^{-1}$). The class of 2-oscillating paratopological groups includes all collapsing, all nilpotent paratopological groups, all paratopological groups satisfying a positive law, all paratopological SIN-group and all saturated paratopological groups (the latter means that for any nonempty open set $U\subset G$ the set $U^{-1}$ has nonempty interior). We prove that each totally bounded paratopological group $G$ is countably cellular; moreover, every cardinal of uncountable cofinality is a precaliber of $G$. Also we give an example of a saturated paratopological group which is not isomorphic to its mirror paratopological group as well as an example of a 2-oscillating paratopological group whose mirror paratopological group is not 2-oscillating.
