Characterization of Helicopter Rotor Blade Modulation in UHF and Microwave Bands

This paper presents metrics and measurement methods for the experimental characterization of helicopter rotor blade modulation of the wireless propagation channel. Broadband bistatic channel measurements were conducted at three widely separated carrier frequencies (302 MHz in the UHF band, 4.9 GHz in the C-band, and 27.1 GHz in the Ka-band) for three military helicopters (CH-53, Tiger, and UMAT) at the Bundeswehr Technical and Airworthiness Center for Aircraft in Manching, Germany. The time-variant channel was analyzed in terms of the Doppler Power Spectrum and the RMS Doppler spread, the Doppler spectrogram, and the Power Time Profile. The RMS Doppler spread values were found to be moderate (up to 106 Hz), which is attributable to the predominantly lateral blade motion relative to the line-of-sight path. The Power Time Profiles revealed periodic blockage attenuations of up to 15 dB at Ka-band, increasing significantly with the carrier frequency; at 302 MHz, the blockage attenuation does not exceed 2.3 dB and the RMS Doppler spread stays below 10 Hz. The measured blockage attenuation was modeled using the double knife-edge diffraction model, showing good agreement with the measurements. The distinct micro-Doppler signatures visible in the spectrograms are identified as a potential resource for helicopter classification and passive radar applications.

Exploiting Beamforming for Enforcing Semantic Secrecy in 5G NR mmWave Communications

We experimentally investigate the performance of semantically-secure physical layer security (PLS) in 5G new radio (NR) mmWave communications during the initial cell search procedure in the NR band n257 at 27 GHz. A gNB transmits PLS-encoded messages in the presence of an eavesdropper, who intercepts the communication by non-intrusively collecting channel readings in the form of IQ samples. For the message transmission, we use the physical broadcast channel (PBCH) within the synchronization signal block. We analyze different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions by progressively reducing the transmit power of the subcarriers carrying the PBCH channel, while ensuring optimal conditions for over-the-air frequency and timing synchronization. We measure the secrecy performance of the communication in terms of upper and lower bounds for the distinguishing error rate (DER) metric for different SNR levels and beam angles when performing beamsteering in indoor scenarios, such as office environments and laboratory settings.

Instantaneous directional channel measurements at 14 GHz and 160 GHz via a virtual circular array

In this paper a novel frequency-scalable rotary platform design is introduced which allows for flexible directional channel measurements using different types of antennas, and which can also be used with frequency extenders for measurements up to the THz region. The measurement platform has been applied to measure the channel properties including the direction of arrival at the FR3 frequency 14 GHz and in the D-band at 160 GHz in a large hall indoor environment with LOS distances up to 40 m. The results show very good agreement of strong path components for both frequencies as well as interesting dependencies of delay spread, angular spread, and Ricean K- factor on distance and frequency and can be used to parameterize a path loss model.

Little or no equalization is needed in energy-efficient sub-THz mobile access

By trading coverage and hardware complexity for abundance of spectrum, sub-THz mobile access networks are expected to operate under highly directive and relatively spectrally inefficient transmission regimes, while still offering enormous capacity gains over current sub-6GHz alternatives. Building on this assumption, and supported by extensive indoor directional channel measurements at 160 GHz, this study advocates the use of very simple modulation and equalization techniques for sub-THz mobile access. Specifically, we demonstrate that, under the aforementioned transmission regimes, little or no equalization is needed for scoring significant capacity gain targets. In particular, we show that single-carrier or low-number-of-subcarriers modulations are very attractive competitors to the dramatically more complex and energy inefficient traditional multi-carrier designs.

Observations on the Angular Statistics of the Indoor Sub-THz Radio Channel at 158 GHz

This paper presents selected results from a channel measurement campaign conducted in a shopping mall scenario at 158 GHz. The focus is on the statistical analysis of the collected measurement data in terms of directional channel gain. Although most power is received from the line-of-sight (LOS) direction, significant multipaths arrive from all measured azimuth directions. The median of the sorted directional channel gain can be approximated by a linear curve showing an offset of about 10 dB with respect to the LOS direction.

On the Dynamic Range of Digital Correlative Time Domain Radio Channel Measurements

For the concise characterization of radio channel measurement setups, different performance metrics like dynamic range and maximum measurable path loss have been proposed. This work further elaborates on these metrics and discusses practical bounds for the class of digital correlative time domain channel sounders. From a general instrumentation model, relevant nonidealities and the resulting effects on measurement performance are identified. These considerations yield the tools to select appropriate measurement parameters for a given scenario and assess the overall performance of a particular measurement setup. The findings are further illustrated with data acquired from an instrument-based measurement setup.

Measurement and Characterization of an Indoor Industrial Environment at 3.7 and 28 GHz

Fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are expected to play an increasing role in industrial communication with private mobile communication networks deployed on company premises. For planning, standardization and product development, it is crucial to to thoroughly understand the radio channel characteristics of such environments. Frequencies around 3.7 GHz were already reserved by regulation authorities and to meet the increasing demand for higher bandwidths, spectrum in the millimeter wave range around 28 GHz is targeted. This paper presents a wideband channel measurement campaign at both 3.7 and 28 GHz with direction-of-arrival information at 28 GHz. The results are compared to the 3GPP TR 38.901 Indoor Factory model and to two other recent papers. Evaluation of path loss and RMS delay and angle spread show the unique nature of industrial indoor environments.

THz Channel Sounding: Design and Validation of a High Performance Channel Sounder at 300 GHz

In this paper, a novel instrument-based time-domain THz channel sounder for the 300 GHz band is introduced. The performance is characterized by conducted measurements and verified by over-the-air measurements, which confirm the sensitivity and highlight the temporal resolution of the setup. Dynamic range, maximum measurable path loss and phase stability are evaluated. The results show that the performance in terms of dynamic range and maximum measurable path loss is, to the best knowledge of the authors, unprecedented in this frequency range.
