Unitary matrix models and random partitions: Universality and multi-criticality

The generating functions for the gauge theory observables are often represented in terms of the unitary matrix integrals. In this work, the perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of the generic multi-critical unitary matrix models are studied by adopting the integrable operator formalism, and the multi-critical generalization of the Tracy--Widom distribution in the context of random partitions. We obtain the universal results for the multi-critical model in the weak and strong coupling phases. The free energy of the instanton sector in the weak coupling regime, and the genus expansion of the free energy in the strong coupling regime are explicitly computed and the universal multi-critical phase structure of the model is explored. Finally, we apply our results in concrete examples of supersymmetric indices of gauge theories in the large $N$ limit.

Intersecting Defects and Supergroup Gauge Theory

We consider 5d supersymmetric gauge theories with unitary groups in the $Ω$-background and study codim-2/4 BPS defects supported on orthogonal planes intersecting at the origin along a circle. The intersecting defects arise upon implementing the most generic Higgsing (geometric transition) to the parent higher dimensional theory, and they are described by pairs of 3d supersymmetric gauge theories with unitary groups interacting through 1d matter at the intersection. We explore the relations between instanton and generalized vortex calculus, pointing out a duality between intersecting defects subject to the $Ω$-background and a deformation of supergroup gauge theories, the exact supergroup point being achieved in the self-dual or unrefined limit. Embedding our setup into refined topological strings and in the simplest case when the parent 5d theory is Abelian, we are able to identify the supergroup theory dual to the intersecting defects as the supergroup version of refined Chern-Simons theory via open/closed duality. We also discuss the BPS/CFT side of the correspondence, finding an interesting large rank duality with super-instanton counting.

Instanton Counting, Quantum Geometry and Algebra

The aim of this memoir for "Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches" is to present quantum geometric and algebraic aspects of supersymmetric gauge theory, which emerge from non-perturbative nature of the vacuum structure induced by instantons. We start with a brief summary of the equivariant localization of the instanton moduli space, and show how to obtain the instanton partition function and its generalization to quiver gauge theory and supergroup gauge theory in three ways: the equivariant index formula, the contour integral formula, and the combinatorial formula. We then explore the geometric description of $\mathcal{N} = 2$ gauge theory based on Seiberg-Witten geometry together with its string/M-theory perspective. Through its relation to integrable systems, we show how to quantize such a geometric structure via the $Ω$-deformation of gauge theory. We also discuss the underlying quantum algebraic structure arising from the supersymmetric vacua. We introduce the notion of quiver W-algebra constructed through double quantization of Seiberg-Witten geometry, and show its specific features: affine quiver W-algebras, fractional quiver W-algebras, and their elliptic deformations.

Universal edge scaling in random partitions

We establish the universal edge scaling limit of random partitions with the infinite-parameter distribution called the Schur measure. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the wave function, which is a building block of the corresponding kernel, based on the Schr{ö}dinger-type differential equation. We show that the wave function is in general asymptotic to the Airy function and its higher-order analogs in the edge scaling limit. We construct the corresponding higher-order Airy kernel and the Tracy-Widom distribution from the wave function in the scalins limit, and discuss its implication to the multicritical phase transition in the large size matrix model. We also discuss the limit shape of random partitions through the semi-classical analysis of the wave function.

Hall and spin Hall viscosity ratio in 2d topological insulators

We study responses to metric perturbation in topological insulator models. In this paper we introduce a novel quantity, Hall viscosity to particle density ratio, which is analogous to the viscosity to entropy ratio suggested by AdS/CFT correspondence. This quantity corresponds to the filling fraction which characterizes the quantum Hall states, and hence it could be discussed in Haldane's zero-field quantum Hall system. We also consider dissipationless viscosity in the time reversal invariant quantum spin Hall system, which is related to a spin current.

A refinement of Sato-Tate conjecture

We propose a refined version of the Sato-Tate conjecture about the spacing distribution of the angle determined for each prime number. We also discuss its implications on $L$-function associated with elliptic curves in the relation to random matrix theory.

ABCD of Kondo effect

We explore the Kondo effect incorporating the localized impurity transforming under generic symmetry group $G$, that we call the $G$-Kondo effect. We derive the one-dimensional effective model coupled with the impurity, and studied the thermodynamic properties based on the boundary conformal field theory approach. We in particular study the impurity entropy at the conformal fixed point, and the low temperature behavior of the specific heat and the susceptibility. We also consider the Wilson ratio based on these results, and mention the case with exceptional group symmetry.

Branes, quivers and wave-functions

We consider a large class of branes in toric strip geometries, both non-periodic and periodic ones. For a fixed background geometry we show that partition functions for such branes can be reinterpreted, on one hand, as quiver generating series, and on the other hand as wave-functions in various polarizations. We determine operations on quivers, as well as $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformations, which correspond to changing positions of these branes. Our results prove integrality of BPS multiplicities associated to this class of branes, reveal how they transform under changes of polarization, and imply all other properties of brane amplitudes that follow from the relation to quivers.

Partition Functions of $\mathcal{N}=1$ Gauge Theories on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$ and Duality

We compute the partition functions of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theories on $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$ using supersymmetric localization. The path integral reduces to a sum over vortices at the poles of $S^2$ and at the origin of $\mathbb{R}^2_\varepsilon$. The exact partition functions allow us to test Seiberg duality beyond the supersymmetric index. We propose the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ partition functions on the $Ω$-background, and show that the Nekrasov partition functions can be recovered from these building blocks.

Quantum Integrable Systems from Supergroup Gauge Theories

In this note, we establish several interesting connections between the supergroup gauge theories and the super integrable systems, i.e. gauge theories with supergroups as their gauge groups and integrable systems defined on superalgebras. In particular, we construct the super-characteristic polynomials of super-Toda lattice and elliptic double Calogero-Moser system by considering certain orbifolded instanton partition functions of their corresponding supergroup gauge theories. We also derive an exotic generalization of sl(2) XXX spin chain arising from the instanton partition function of SQCD with supergauge group, and study its Bethe ansatz equation.

Topological Vertex/anti-Vertex and Supergroup Gauge Theory

We propose a new vertex formalism, called anti-refined topological vertex (anti-vertex for short), to compute the generalized topological string amplitude, which gives rise to the supergroup gauge theory partition function. We show the one-to-many correspondence between the gauge theory and the Calabi--Yau geometry, which is peculiar to the supergroup theory, and the relation between the ordinary vertex formalism and the vertex/anti-vertex formalism through the analytic continuation.

Quantum Elliptic Calogero-Moser Systems from Gauge Origami

We systematically study the interesting relations between the quantum elliptic Calogero-Moser system (eCM) and its generalization, and their corresponding supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, we construct the suitable characteristic polynomial for the eCM system by considering certain orbifolded instanton partition function of the corresponding gauge theory. This is equivalent to the introduction of certain co-dimension two defects. We next generalize our construction to the folded instanton partition function obtained through the so-called "gauge origami" construction and precisely obtain the corresponding characteristic polynomial for the doubled version, named the elliptic double Calogero-Moser (edCM) system.

Web Construction of ABCDEFG and Affine Quiver Gauge Theories

The topological vertex formalism for 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories is not only a convenient tool to compute the instanton partition function of these theories, but it is also accompanied by a nice algebraic structure that reveals various kinds of nice properties such as dualities and integrability of the underlying theories. The usual refined topological vertex formalism is derived for gauge theories with $A$-type quiver structure (and $A$-type gauge groups). In this article, we propose a construction with a web of vertex operators for all $ABCDEFG$-type and affine quivers by introducing several new vertices into the formalism, based on the reproducing of known instanton partition functions and qq-characters for these theories.

Super instanton counting and localization

We study the super instanton solution in the gauge theory with U$(n_{+}| n_{-})$ gauge group. Based on the ADHM construction generalized to the supergroup theory, we derive the instanton partition function from the super instanton moduli space through the equivariant localization. We derive the Seiberg-Witten geometry and its quantization for the supergroup gauge theory from the instanton partition function, and study the connection with classical and quantum integrable systems. We also argue the brane realization of the supergroup quiver gauge theory, and possible connection to the non-supergroup quiver gauge theories.

Twisted reduction of quiver W-algebras

We consider the $k$-twisted Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit (NS$_k$ limit) of 5d (K-theoretic) and 6d (elliptic) quiver gauge theory, where one of the multiplicative equivariant parameters is taken to be the $k$-th root of unity. We obtain the extended center of the associated $q$-deformed quiver W-algebras constructed by our formalism [arXiv:1512.08533; arXiv:1608.04651; arXiv:1705.04410], which provides gauge theoretic proof of Bouwknegt-Pilch's statement on the relation to the representation ring of quantum affine algebra.

Quantum mirror curve of periodic chain geometry

The mirror curves enable us to study B-model topological strings on non-compact toric Calabi--Yau threefolds. One of the method to obtain the mirror curves is to calculate the partition function of the topological string with single brane. In this paper, we discuss two types of geometries; one is the chain of $N$ $\mathbb{P}^1$'s which we call `$N$-chain geometry,' the other is the chain of $N$ $\mathbb{P}^1$'s with a compactification which we call `periodic $N$-chain geometry.' We calculate the partition functions of the open topological strings on these geometries, and obtain the mirror curves and their quantization. Through the computation, we find some difference equations of (elliptic) hypergeometric functions. We also find a relation between the periodic chain and $\infty$-chain geometries, which implies a possible connection between 5d and 6d gauge theories in the large $N$ limit.
