Generation structures and Yukawa couplings in magnetized $T^{2g}/\mathbb{Z}_N$ models

We study fermion zero-mode wave functions with various chiralities in magnetized $T^{2g}$, $(g=2,3)$ torus. First, we consider the wave functions satisfying the Dirac equation and the boundary conditions on the magnetized torus. Second, we introduce the $SO(3)$ (or parity) transformations and derive the wave functions under the modular transformation. Additionally, we calculate the Yukawa couplings with consideration for the chirality. Lastly, we briefly review how to construct $T^{4}/\mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N=2,3,4,6$) and $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_{12}$ twisted orbifold. Also, we explicitly analyze the number of the wave functions in $\mathbb{Z}_N$ sectors.

On discrete gauging and non-invertible selection rules

We clarify selection rules of conjugacy classes of several finite discrete groups where we deal with both gauged and ungauged cases. We find that the selection rules enjoy finite Abelian or non-Abelian discrete symmetries originating from the inner and/or outer automorphism of underlying discrete groups. Since the selection rules of conjugacy classes do not obey conventional group-like selection rules, they open up new coupling selection rules of fields which are labeled by the conjugacy classes.

Matter symmetries in supersymmetric standard models from non-invertible selection rules

We discuss phenomenological implications of non-invertible selection rules in the framework of the supersymmetric standard model. We find that a remnant $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of fusion algebras which holds at all-loop order plays the role of $R$-parity, forbidding baryon and lepton violating operators. In addition, a combination of Standard Model gauge symmetry and the non-invertible selection rules lead to baryon triality and proton hexality that can protect the proton from decay. In general, our finding selection rules can not realize the same results as conventional $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetries in the supersymmetric standard model. We also clarify the assignments of matter fields under the fusion algebras that are consistent with $SU(4) \times SU(2) \times SU(2)$, $SU(5)$, and $SO(10)$ grand unified theories.

More about quark Yukawa textures from selection rules without group actions

We study the coupling selection rules associated with non-group symmetries, i.e., $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauging of $\mathbb{Z}_M$ symmetries. We clarify which Yukawa textures can be derived by our selection rules for $M=3, 4$, and 5, and obtain various textures including the the nearest neighbor interaction type and its extension. Some of them cannot be realized by a conventional group-like symmetry. They lead to interesting phenomenology such as a solution to the strong CP problem without axion.

Modular symmetry of localized modes

We study the modular symmetry of localized modes on fixed points of $T^2/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold. First, we find that the localized modes with even (odd) modular weight generally have $Δ(6n^2)$ ($Δ'(6n^2)$) modular flavor symmetry. Moreover, when we consider an additional Ansatz, the localized modes with even (odd) modular weight generally enjoy $S_3$ ($S'_4$) modular flavor symmetry, and we show the concrete wave functions of the localized modes.

Moduli stabilization in finite modular symmetric models

We study vacua of moduli potential consisting of multiple contribution of modular forms in a finite modular symmetry. If the potential is given by a single modular form, the Minkowski vacuum is realized at the fixed point of the modular symmetry. We show that the de Sitter vacuum is realized with a multiple modular form case and obtain a non-trivial vacuum which is away from the fixed point, i.e. a large modulus vacuum expectation value, depending on the choice of the weight and representation of the modular forms. We study these vacua numerically and analytically. It is also found that the vacua obtained in this paper preserve CP symmetry.

Large and small hierarchies from finite modular symmetries

We study the moduli stabilization by the radiative corrections due to the moduli dependent vector-like masses invariant under the finite modular symmetry. The radiative stabilization mechanism can stabilize the modulus $τ$ of the finite modular symmetry $Γ_N$ ($N \in \mathbb{N}$) at $\mathrm{Im}\,τ\gg 1$, where the shift symmetry $τ\to τ+1$ remains unbroken approximately. The shift symmetry can be considered as the residual $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry which realizes the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with the hierarchy parameter $e^{- 2π\mathrm{Im}\,τ/N} \ll 1$. In this work, we study the stabilization of multiple moduli fields, so that various hierarchical values of the modular forms coexist in a model. For example, one modulus stabilized at $\mathrm{Im}\,τ_1 \sim 3$ is responsible for the hierarchical structure of the quarks and leptons in the Standard Model, and another modulus stabilized at $\mathrm{Im}\,τ_2 \sim 15$ can account for the flatness of the $\mathrm{Re}\,τ_2$ direction which may be identified as the QCD axion.

Quantum aspects of non-invertible flavor symmetries in intersecting/magnetized D-brane models

We discuss selection rules of chiral matters in type IIA intersecting and IIB magnetized D-brane models on toroidal orbifolds. Since the chiral matters on toroidal orbifolds are labeled by a certain conjugacy class of the gauged orbifold group, the selection rules involve non-trivial fusion rules. We find that the representation of the chiral matters is described by a $D_4$ flavor symmetry for an even number of magnetic fluxes or winding numbers at tree level. Furthermore, the $D_4$ symmetry still remains even when we take into account loop effects. We also study non-perturbative effects such as D-brane instantons.

Non-invertible flavor symmetries in magnetized extra dimensions

We discuss non-invertible symmetries in toroidal compactifications of higher dimensional Yang-Mills theory with magnetic fluxes, which can be regarded as an effective action of type IIB string theory with magnetized D-branes. Specifically, we derive fusion rules of discrete isometry operators, which are invariant under the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ orbifold twist. It turns out that degenerate chiral zero-modes non-trivially transform under the non-invertible symmetries in the context of quantum mechanics. Hence, non-invertible symmetries correspond to flavor symmetries of chiral zero modes and determine their flavor structure. We explicitly show the representations and selection rules of chiral zero modes on their wave functions. These zero modes may correspond to generations of quarks and leptons in four-dimensional low-energy effective field theory.

Moduli stabilization and light axion by Siegel modular forms

We discuss the stabilization of multiple moduli by utilizing Siegel modular forms in the framework of $Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$ modular invariant theories. We derive the stationary conditions at CP-conserving fixed points for a generic modular- and CP-invariant scalar potential. The stabilization of multiple moduli is explicitly demonstrated in $Sp(4,\mathbb{Z})$ and $Sp(6,\mathbb{Z})$ modular invariant scalar potentials. Furthermore, it turns out that there exists a light axion when the moduli are stabilized nearby a fixed point.

Spontaneous CP violation and partially broken modular flavor symmetries

We study the realization of spontaneous CP violation through moduli stabilization. In modular flavor models, the source of CP violation is the vacuum expectation values of the complex structure moduli of toroidal compact space. We demonstrate that the combined effects of Type IIB flux compactifications with modular invariant couplings between the moduli and matter fields can induce spontaneous CP violation without or with supersymmetry breaking. Furthermore, some general properties of CP and modular invariant scalar potentials are presented. It is found that certain modifications or partial breakings of modular symmetry are useful in generating spontaneous CP violation.

Yukawa textures from non-invertible symmetries

Phenomenological aspects of non-invertible symmetries, in particular the flavor structure of quarks and leptons, are studied. We start with a $\mathbb{Z}_M$ discrete symmetry and gauge $\mathbb{Z}_2$ so as to obtain a non-invertible symmetry. We study which Yukawa textures can be derived from the non-invertible symmetries. Various textures can be realized and some of them cannot be realized by a conventional symmetry. For example, the nearest neighbor interaction texture as well as other interesting textures of quarks and leptons are obtained.

Flavor symmetries from modular subgroups in magnetized compactifications

We study the flavor structures of zero-modes, which are originated from the modular symmetry on $T^2_1\times T^2_2$ and its orbifold with magnetic fluxes. We introduce the constraint on the moduli parameters by $τ_2=Nτ_1$, where $τ_i$ denotes the complex structure moduli on $T^2_i$. Such a constraint can be derived from the moduli stabilization. The modular symmetry of $T^2_1 \times T^2_2$ is $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})_{τ_1} \times SL(2,\mathbb{Z})_{τ_2} \subset Sp(4,\mathbb{Z})$ and it is broken to $Γ_0(N) \times Γ^0(N)$ by the moduli constraint. The wave functions represent their covering groups. We obtain various flavor groups in these models.

Finite modular axion and radiative moduli stabilization

We propose a simple setup which can stabilize a modulus field of the finite modular symmetry by the Coleman-Weinberg potential. Our scenario leads to a large hierarchy suppressing instanton-like corrections $e^{2πiτ}$ and to a light axion identified as $\mathrm{Re} τ$, where $τ$ is the modulus field. This stabilization mechanism provides the axion solution to the strong CP problem. The potential has a minimum at a large $\mathrm{Im}τ$ which suppresses explicit $U(1)_{\mathrm{PQ}}$ violation terms proportional to $e^{-2π{\mathrm{Im}τ}}$, and hence the quality of the axion is ensured by the residual symmetry associated with the $T$-transformation, $τ\to τ+1$, around the fixed point $τ\sim i\infty$.

Modular forms and hierarchical Yukawa couplings in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications

We study the modular symmetry in heterotic string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we examine whether moduli-dependent holomorphic Yukawa couplings are described by modular forms in the context of heterotic string theory with standard embedding. We find that $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ modular symmetry emerges in asymptotic regions of the Calabi-Yau moduli space. The instanton-corrected holomorphic Yukawa couplings are then given by modular forms under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ or its congruence subgroups such as $Γ_0(3)$ and $Γ_0(4)$. In addition to the modular symmetry, it turns out that another coupling selection rule controls the structure of holomorphic Yukawa couplings. Furthermore, the coexistence of both the positive and negative modular weights for matter fields leads to a hierarchical structure of matter field Kähler metric. Thus, these holomorphic modular forms and the matter field Kähler metric play an important role in realizing a hierarchical structure of physical Yukawa couplings.

Radiative correction on moduli stabilization in modular flavor symmetric models

We study the radiative corrections to the stabilization of the complex structure modulus $τ$ in modular flavor symmetric models. We discuss the possibility of obtaining the vacuum expectation value of $τ$ in the vicinity of the fixed point where residual symmetries remain unbroken. As concrete examples, we analyze the 1-loop Coleman-Weinberg potential in the $A_4$ modular flavor models. We show that the 1-loop correction may lead to the slight deviation from the tree level result, which may realize a phenomenologically preferred value of the complex structure modulus $τ$ particularly when the number of species contributing to the 1-loop correction is large enough.

CP phase in modular flavor models and discrete Froggatt-Nielsen models

We study the large mass hierarchy and CP violation in the modular symmetric quark flavor models without fine-tuning. Mass matrices are written in terms of modular forms. Modular forms near the modular fixed points are approximately given by $\varepsilon^p$, where $\varepsilon$ and $p$ denote the small deviation from the fixed points and their residual charges. Thus mass matrices have the hierarchical structures depending on the residual charges, and have a possibility describing the large mass hierarchy without fine-tuning. Similar structures of mass matrices are also obtained in Froggatt-Nielsen models. Nevertheless, it seems to be difficult to induce a sufficient amount of CP violation by a single small complex parameter $\varepsilon$. To realize the large mass hierarchy as well as sizable CP violation, multi-moduli are required. We show the mass matrix structures with multi-moduli which are consistent with quark flavor observables including CP phase. We also discuss the origins of the large mass hierarchy and CP violation in such mass matrix structures.

Flux Landscape with Enhanced Symmetry Not on $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ Elliptic Points

We study structures of solutions for SUSY Minkowski F-term equations on two toroidal orientifolds with $h^{2, 1} = 1$. Following our previous study \cite{Ishiguro:2020tmo}, with fixed upper bounds of a flux D3-brane charge $N_{\rm flux}$, we obtain a whole Landscape and a distribution of degeneracies of physically-distinct solutions for each case. In contrast to our previous study, we consider a non-factorizable toroidal orientifold and its Landscape on which $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ is violated into a certain congruence subgroup, as it had been known in past studies. We find that it is not the entire duality group that a complex-structure modulus $U$ enjoys but its outer semi-direct product with a "scaling" outer automorphism group. The fundamental region is enlarged to include the $|U| < 1$ region. In addition, we find that high degeneracy is observed at an elliptic point, not of $SL(2, Z)$ but of the outer automorphism group. Furthermore, $\mathbb{Z}_2$-enhanced symmetry is realized on the elliptic point. The outer automorphism group is exceptional in the sense that it is consistent with a symplectic basis transformation of background three-cycles, as opposed to the outer automorphism group of $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$. We also compare this result with Landscape of another factorizable toroidal orientifold.
