Global Oort Groups

We study the Oort groups for a prime p, i.e. finite groups G such that every G-Galois branched cover of smooth curves over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p lifts to a G-cover of curves in characteristic 0. We prove that all Oort groups lie in a particular class of finite groups that we characterize, with equality of classes under a conjecture about local liftings. We prove this equality unconditionally if the order of G is not divisible by 2p^2. We also treat the local lifting problem and relate it to the global problem.

Geodesic curves on Shimura surfaces

We parametrize the commensurability classes of curves on Shimura surfaces that are totally geodesic, i.e., the commensurability classes of so-called $\mathbb{C}$-Fuchsian subgroups. In particular, if a Shimura surface contains one commensurability class of totally geodesic curves, it contains infinitely many.

Small generators for S-unit groups of division algebras

Let $k$ be a number field, suppose that $B$ is a central simple division algebra over $k$, and choose any maximal order $\mathcal{D}$ of $B$. The object of this paper is to show that the group $\mathcal{D}_S^*$ of $S$-units of $B$ is generated by elements of small height once $S$ contains an explicit finite set of places of $k$. This generalizes a theorem of H.\ W.\ Lenstra Jr., who proved such a result when $B = k$. Our height bound is an explicit function of the number field and the discriminant of a maximal order in $B$ used to define its $S$-units.

The geometry of finite dimensional algebras with vanishing radical square

Let $Λ$ be a basic finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field, with the property that the square of the Jacobson radical $J$ vanishes. We determine the irreducible components of the module variety $\text{Mod}_{\bf d}(Λ)$ for any dimension vector $\bf d$. Our description leads to a count of the components in terms of the underlying Gabriel quiver. A closed formula for the number of components when $Λ$ is local extends existing counts for the two-loop quiver to quivers with arbitrary finite sets of loops. For any algebra $Λ$ with $J^2 = 0$, our criteria for identifying the components of $\text{Mod}_{\bf d}(Λ)$ permit us to characterize the modules parametrized by the individual irreducible components. Focusing on such a component, we explore generic properties of the corresponding modules by establishing a geometric bridge between the algebras with zero radical square on one hand and their stably equivalent hereditary counterparts on the other. The bridge links certain closed subvarieties of Grassmannians parametrizing the modules with fixed top over the two types of algebras. By way of this connection, we transfer results of Kac and Schofield from the hereditary case to algebras of Loewy length $2$. Finally, we use the transit of information to show that any algebra of Loewy length $2$ which enjoys the dense orbit property in the sense of Chindris, Kinser and Weyman has finite representation type.

Presentations for quaternionic $S$-unit groups

The purpose of this paper is to give presentations for projective $S$-unit groups of the Hurwitz order in Hamilton's quaternions over the rational field $\mathbb{Q}$. To our knowledge, this provides the first explicit presentations of an $S$-arithmetic lattice in a semisimple Lie group with $S$ large. In particular, we give presentations for groups acting irreducibly and cocompactly on a product of Bruhat--Tits trees. We also include some discussion and experimentation related to the congruence subgroup problem, which is open when $S$ contains at least two odd primes. In the appendix, we provide code that allows the reader to compute presentations for an arbitrary finite set $S$.

Orbit closures and rational surfaces

In this paper we study the Grassmannian of submodules of a given dimension inside a finitely generated projective module $P$ for a finite dimensional algebra $Λ$ over an algebraically closed field. The orbit of such a submodule $C$ under the action of $\mathrm{Aut}_Λ( P )$ on the Grassmannian encodes information on the degenerations of $P/C$ and has been considered by a number of authors. The goal of this article is to bound the geometry of two-dimensional orbit closures in terms of representation-theoretic data. Several examples are given to illustrate the interplay between the geometry of the projective surfaces which arise and the corresponding posets of degenerations.

The classifying topos of a group scheme and invariants of symmetric bundles

Let $Y$ be a scheme in which 2 is invertible and let $V$ be a rank $n$ vector bundle on $Y$ endowed with a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form $q$. The orthogonal group ${\bf O}(q)$ of the form $q$ is a group scheme over $Y$ whose cohomology ring $H^*(B_{{\bf O}(q)},{\bf Z}/2{\bf Z})\simeq A_Y[HW_1(q),..., HW_n(q)]$ is a polynomial algebra over the étale cohomology ring $A_Y:=H^*(Y_{et},{\bf Z}/2{\bf Z})$ of the scheme $Y$. Here the $HW_i(q)$'s are Jardine's universal Hasse-Witt invariants and $B_{{\bf O}(q)}$ is the classifying topos of ${\bf O}(q)$ as defined by Grothendieck and Giraud. The cohomology ring $H^*(B_{{\bf O}(q)},{\bf Z}/2{\bf Z})$ contains canonical classes $\mathrm{det}[q]$ and $[C_q]$ of degree 1 and 2 respectively, which are obtained from the determinant map and the Clifford group of $q$. The classical Hasse-Witt invariants $w_i(q)$ live in the ring $A_Y$. Our main theorem provides a computation of ${det}[q]$ and $[C_{q}]$ as polynomials in $HW_{1}(q)$ and $HW_{2}(q)$ with coefficients in $A_Y$ written in terms of $w_1(q),w_2(q)\in A_Y$. This result is the source of numerous standard comparison formulas for classical Hasses-Witt invariants of quadratic forms. Our proof is based on computations with (abelian and non-abelian) Cech cocycles in the topos $B_{{\bf O}(q)}$. This requires a general study of the cohomology of the classifying topos of a group scheme, which we carry out in the first part of this paper.

Every Binary Self-Dual Code Arises From Hilbert Symbols

In this paper we construct binary self-dual codes using the étale cohomology of $\mathbb{Z}/2$ on the spectra of rings of $S$-integers of global fields. We will show that up to equivalence, all self-dual codes of length at least 4 arise from Hilbert pairings on rings of $S$-integers of $\Q$. This is an arithmetic counterpart of a result of Kreck and Puppe, who used cobordism theory to show that all self-dual codes arise from Poincaré duality on real three manifolds.

Finite Morphisms to Projective Space and Capacity Theory

We study conditions on a commutative ring R which are equivalent to the following requirement; whenever X is a projective scheme over S = Spec(R) of fiber dimension \leq d for some integer d \geq 0, there is a finite morphism from X to P^d_S over S such that the pullbacks of coordinate hyperplanes give prescribed subschemes of X provided these subschemes satisfy certain natural conditions. We use our results to define a new kind of capacity for adelic subsets of projective schemes X over global fields. This capacity can be used to generalize the converse part of the Fekete-Szegő Theorem.

Inverse Problems for deformation rings

Let $\mathcal{W}$ be a complete local commutative Noetherian ring with residue field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. We study the inverse problem for the versal deformation rings $R_{\mathcal{W}}(Γ,V)$ relative to $\mathcal{W}$ of finite dimensional representations $V$ of a profinite group $Γ$ over $k$. We show that for all $p$ and $n \ge 1$, the ring $\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2)$ arises as a universal deformation ring. This ring is not a complete intersection if $p^n\mathcal{W}\neq\{0\}$, so we obtain an answer to a question of M. Flach in all characteristics. We also study the `inverse inverse problem' for the ring $\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2)$; this is to determine all pairs $(Γ, V)$ such that $R_{\mathcal{W}}(Γ,V)$ is isomorphic to this ring.

Orthogonal representations of affine group schemes and twists of symmetric bundles

Following Serre's initial work, a number of authors have considered twists of quadratic forms on a scheme Y by torsors of a finite group G, together with formulas for the Hasse-Witt invariants of the twisted form. In this paper we take the base scheme Y to be affine and consider non-constant groups schemes G. There is a fundamental new feature in this case - in that the torsor may now be ramified over Y. The natural framework for handling the case of a non-constant group scheme over the affine base is provided by the quadratic theory of Hopf-algebras.

An element of order 4 in the Nottingham group at the prime 2

For k a field of characteristic 2, we show that there is a unique continuous automorphism of order 4 of the power series ring k[[t]] which sends t to t + t^2 + (t^6) + (t^{12} + t^{14}) + (t^{24} + t^{26} + t^{28} + t^{30}) + ... . For j >= 0, the j-th sum in parentheses has 2^j terms beginning at t^{6*2^j}, with successive terms in the j-th sum raising the exponent of t by 2.

Finiteness Theorems for Deformations of Complexes

We consider deformations of bounded complexes of modules for a profinite group G over a field of positive characteristic. We prove a finiteness theorem which provides some sufficient conditions for the versal deformation of such a complex to be represented by a complex of G-modules that is strictly perfect over the associated versal deformation ring.

Obstructions for Deformations of Complexes

We develop two approaches to obstruction theory for deformations of derived isomorphism classes of complexes $Z^\bullet$ of modules for a profinite group $G$ over a complete local Noetherian ring $A$ of positive residue characteristic $\ell$.

Infinite Easier Waring Constants for Commutative Rings

Suppose n >= 2. We show that there is no integer v >= 1 such that for all commutative rings R with identity, every element of the subring J(2^n,R) of R generated by 2^n-th powers can be written in the form \pm f_1^{2^n} \pm \cdots \pm f_v^{2^n} for some f_1,...,f_v \in R and some choice of signs.

Deformation rings which are not local complete intersections

We study the inverse problem for the versal deformation rings $R(Γ,V)$ of finite dimensional representations $V$ of a finite group $Γ$ over a field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. This problem is to determine which complete local commutative Noetherian rings with residue field $k$ can arise up to isomorphism as such $R(Γ,V)$. We show that for all integers $n \ge 1$ and all complete local commutative Noetherian rings $\mathcal{W}$ with residue field $k$, the ring $\mathcal{W}[[t]]/(p^n t,t^2)$ arises in this way. This ring is not a local complete intersection if $p^n\mathcal{W}\neq\{0\}$, so we obtain an answer to a question of M. Flach in all characteristics.

The local lifting problem for actions of finite groups on curves

Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. We study obstructions to lifting to characteristic 0 the faithful continuous action $ϕ$ of a finite group $G$ on $k[[t]]$. To each such $ϕ$ a theorem of Katz and Gabber associates an action of $G$ on a smooth projective curve $Y$ over $k$. We say that the KGB obstruction of $ϕ$ vanishes if $G$ acts on a smooth projective curve $X$ in characteristic 0 in such a way that $X/H$ and $Y/H$ have the same genus for all subgroups $H \subset G$. We determine for which $G$ the KGB obstruction of every $ϕ$ vanishes. We also consider analogous problems in which one requires only that an obstruction to lifting $ϕ$ due to Bertin vanishes for some $ϕ$, or for all sufficiently ramified $ϕ$. These results provide evidence for a strengthening of Oort's lifting conjecture.
