Oort groups and lifting problems

Let k be an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic p. We consider which finite groups G have the property that every faithful action of G on a connected smooth projective curve over k lifts to characteristic zero. Oort conjectured that cyclic groups have this property. We show that if a cyclic-by-p group G has this property, then G must be either cyclic or dihedral, with the exception of A_4 in characteristic 2. This proves one direction of a strong form of the Oort Conjecture.

Galois structure of homogeneous coordinate rings

Suppose $G$ is a finite group acting on a projective scheme $X$ over a commutative Noetherian ring $R$. We study the $RG$-modules $\HH^0(X,\mathcal{F} \otimes \mathcal{L}^n)$ when $n \ge 0$, and $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{L}$ are coherent $G$-sheaves on $X$ such that $\mathcal{L}$ is an ample line bundle. We show that the classes of these modules in the Grothendieck group $G_0(RG)$ of all finitely generated $RG$-modules lie in a finitely generated subgroup. Under various hypotheses, we show that there is a finite set of indecomposable $RG$-modules such that each $\HH^0(X,\mathcal{F} \otimes \mathcal{L}^n)$ is a direct sum of these indecomposables, with multiplicites given by generalized Hilbert polynomials for $n >> 0$.

Topological properties of Eschenburg spaces and 3-Sasakian manifolds

The authors examine topological properties of the 7-dimensional Eschenburg biquotients diag(z^k1,z^k2,z^k3)\SU(3)/diag(z^l1,z^l2,z^l3). A subfamily of these spaces carry a 3-Sasakian metric. The authors show that among this subfamily there exist many 3-Sasakian spaces which are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. In addition, they construct a pair of 3-Sasakian spaces which are diffeomorphic, thus giving the first example of a manifold which carries two non-isometric 3-Sasakian metrics. This answers an open question of C. Boyer and K.Galicki. Among the general family, the authors construct many pairs of positively curved Eschenburg spaces which are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. Such pairs were first constructed by Kreck-Stolz among the special subfamily of Aloff-Wallach spaces.
