Realisation of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates in superconducting qubits coupled with a tunable coupler

High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based Randomized Benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelity of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration time of diabatic CZ gate is 19 ns, revealing lower incoherence error rate $r'_{\rm{incoherent, int}}$ = 0.0197(5) than $r_{\rm{incoherent, int}}$ = 0.0223(3).

Characterize noise correlation and enhance coherence via qubit motion

The identification of spacial noise correlation is of critical importance in developing error-corrected quantum devices, but it has barely been studied so far. In this work, we utilize an effective new method called qubit motion, to efficiently determine the noise correlations between any pair of qubits in a 7-qubit superconducting quantum system. The noise correlations between the same pairs of qubits are also investigated when the qubits are at distinct operating frequencies. What's more, in this multi-qubit system with the presence of noise correlations, we demonstrate the enhancing effect of qubit motion on the coherence of logic qubit, and we propose a Motion-CPMG operation sequence to more efficiently protect the logic state from decoherence, which is experimentally demonstrated to extend the decoherence time of logic qubit by nearly one order of magnitude.

Twin Higgs with Exact $Z_2$

We present a novel mechanism for realistic electroweak symmetry breaking in Twin Higgs/neutral naturalness models where the $Z_2$ exchange symmetry can remain exactly unbroken. The exchange symmetry in the Yukawa sector will be implemented as an "N-trigonometric parity" $\sin N \frac{h}{f} \leftrightarrow \cos N \frac{h}{f}$. The Yukawa couplings will be suppressed leading to an N-suppressed Higgs quadratic term, without significantly affecting the quartic. We present a concrete implementation of this idea for general (odd) values of N using maximal symmetry, and a realistic benchmark model for $N=3$. We find that the tuning in the resulting Higgs potential is negligible, and also show that two-loop N-suppression violating gauge contributions can be sufficiently small. The Higgs potential and its couplings in top sector are different from other neutral naturalness models, which are the main predictions of our model and can be tested in colliders.

Renormalization Group Evolution from On-shell SMEFT

We describe the on-shell method to deriving the Renormalization Group (RG) evolution of Wilson coefficients of high dimensional operators at one loop, which is a necessary part in the on-shell construction of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), and exceptionally efficient based on the amplitude basis in hand. The UV divergence is obtained by firstly calculating the coefficients of scalar bubble integrals by unitary cuts, then subtracting the IR divergence in the massless bubbles, which can be easily read from the collinear factors we obtained for the Standard Model fields. Examples of deriving the anomalous dimensions at dimension six are presented in a pedagogical manner. We also give the results of contributions from the dimension-8 $H^4D^4$ operators to the running of $V^+V^-H^2$ operators, as well as the running of $B^+B^-H^2D^{2n}$ from $H^4D^{2n+4}$ for general $n$.

Linear Response Theory of Entanglement Entropy

Linear response theory (LRT) is a key tool in investigating the quantum matter, for quantum systems perturbed by a weak probe, it connects the dynamics of experimental observable with the correlation function of unprobed equilibrium states. Entanglement entropy(EE) is a measure of quantum entanglement, it is a very important quantity of quantum physics and quantum information science. While EE is not an observable, developing the LRT of it is an interesting thing. In this work, we develop the LRT of von Neumann entropy for an open quantum system. Moreover, we found that the linear response of von Neumann entanglement entropy is determined by the linear response of an observable. Using this observable, we define the Kubo formula and susceptibility of EE, which have the same properties of its conventional counterpart. Through using the LRT of EE, we further found that the linear response of EE will be zero for maximally entangled or separable states, this is a unique feature of entanglement dynamics. A numerical verification of our analytical derivation is also given using XX spin chain model. The LRT of EE provides a useful tool in investigating and understanding EE.

Towards a fundamental safe theory of composite Higgs and Dark Matter

We present a novel paradigm that allows to define a composite theory at the electroweak scale that is well defined all the way up to any energy by means of safety in the UV. The theory flows from a complete UV fixed point to an IR fixed point for the strong dynamics (which gives the desired walking) before generating a mass gap at the TeV scale. We discuss two models featuring a composite Higgs, Dark Matter and partial compositeness for all SM fermions. The UV theories can also be embedded in a Pati-Salam partial unification, thus removing the instability generated by the $\mbox{U}(1)$ running. Finally, we find a Dark Matter candidate still allowed at masses of $260$ GeV, or $1.5 \sim 2$ TeV, where the latter mass range will be covered by next generation direct detection experiments.

Neutrino Portal to FIMP Dark Matter with an Early Matter Era

We study the freeze-in production of Feebly Interacting Massive Particle (FIMP) dark matter candidates through a neutrino portal. We consider a hidden sector comprised of a fermion and a complex scalar, with the lightest one regarded as a FIMP candidate. We implement the Type-I Seesaw mechanism for generating the masses of the Standard Model (SM) neutrinos and consider three heavy neutrinos, responsible for mediating the interactions between the hidden and the SM sectors. We assume that an early matter-dominated era (EMDE) took place for some period between inflation and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, making the Universe to expand faster than in the standard radiation-dominated era. In this case, the hidden and SM sectors are easily decoupled and larger couplings between FIMPs and SM particles are needed from the relic density constraints. In this context, we discuss the dynamics of dark matter throughout the modified cosmic history, evaluate the relevant constraints of the model and discuss the consequences of the duration of the EMDE for the dark matter production. Finally, we show that if the heavy neutrinos are not part of the thermal bath, this scenario becomes testable through indirect detection searches.

Characterization of bulk nanobubbles formed by using a porous alumina film with ordered nanopores

Gaseous nanobubbles (NBs), with their unique physicochemical properties and promising applications, have become an important research topic. Generation of monodispersed bulk NBs with specified gas content remains a challenge. We developed a simple method for generating bulk NBs, using porous alumina films with ordered straight nano-scaled holes. Different techniques, such as nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS), are used to confirm NB formation. The NTA data demonstrates that the minimum size of the NBs formed is less than 100 nm, which is comparable to the diameter of nanoholes in the porous alumina film. By generating NBs with different gases, including CO2, O2, N2, Ar, and He, we discovered that the minimum size of NBs negatively correlated with the solubility of encapsulated gases in water. Due to the monodispersed size of NBs generated from the highly ordered porous alumina, we determined that NB size is distributed discretely with a uniform increment factor of sqrt(2). To explain the observed characteristic size distribution of NBs, we propose a simple model in which two NBs of the same size are assumed to preferentially coalesce. This characteristic bubble size distribution is useful for elucidating the basic characteristics of nanobubbles, such as the long-term stability of NBs. This distribution can also be used to develop new applications of NBs, for example, nano-scaled reaction fields through bubble coalescence.

Keyphrase Extraction with Span-based Feature Representations

Keyphrases are capable of providing semantic metadata characterizing documents and producing an overview of the content of a document. Since keyphrase extraction is able to facilitate the management, categorization, and retrieval of information, it has received much attention in recent years. There are three approaches to address keyphrase extraction: (i) traditional two-step ranking method, (ii) sequence labeling and (iii) generation using neural networks. Two-step ranking approach is based on feature engineering, which is labor intensive and domain dependent. Sequence labeling is not able to tackle overlapping phrases. Generation methods (i.e., Sequence-to-sequence neural network models) overcome those shortcomings, so they have been widely studied and gain state-of-the-art performance. However, generation methods can not utilize context information effectively. In this paper, we propose a novelty Span Keyphrase Extraction model that extracts span-based feature representation of keyphrase directly from all the content tokens. In this way, our model obtains representation for each keyphrase and further learns to capture the interaction between keyphrases in one document to get better ranking results. In addition, with the help of tokens, our model is able to extract overlapped keyphrases. Experimental results on the benchmark datasets show that our proposed model outperforms the existing methods by a large margin.

Coherence Concurrence for X States

We study the properties of coherence concurrence and present a physical explanation analogous to the coherence of assistance. We give an optimal pure state decomposition which attains the coherence concurrence for qubit states. We prove the additivity of coherence concurrence under direct sum operations in another way. Using these results, we calculate analytically the coherence concurrence for X states and show its optimal decompositions. Moreover, we show that the coherence concurrence is exactly twice the convex roof extended negativity of the Schmidt correlated states, thus establishing a direct relation between coherence concurrence and quantum entanglement.

The l1 Norm of Coherence of Assistance

We introduce and study the l1 norm of coherence of assistance both theoretically and operationally. We first provide an upper bound for the l1 norm of coherence of assistance and show a necessary and sufficient condition for the saturation of the upper bound. For two and three dimensional quantum states, the analytical expression of the l1 norm of coherence of assistance is given. Operationally, the mixed quantum coherence can always be increased with the help of another party' s local measurement and one way classical communication since the l1 norm of coherence of assistance, as well as the relative entropy of coherence of assistance, is shown to be strictly larger than the original coherence. The relation between the l1 norm of coherence of assistance and entanglement is revealed. Finally, a comparison between the l1 norm of coherence of assistance and the relative entropy of coherence of assistance is made.

The Left-Right Symmetric Composite Higgs

We find the exchange symmetry between left and right handed top quark in composite Higgs model with partial compositeness is efficient to soften the Higgs potential and reduce fine tuning. This symmetry can keep the Higgs potential in top sector invariant under trigonometric parity $\sin (h/f) \leftrightarrow \cos (h/f)$ and thus the Higgs quadratic divergences can be completely cancelled, resulting a UV insensitive Higgs potential. We explicitly construct the minimal left-right symmetric model based on coset space $SO(6)/SO(5)$ which is locally isomorphic to $SU(4)/Sp(4)$ and thus has well defined fermionic UV completion. This UV completion can automatically keep Higgs potential in gauge sector finite even the gauge sector breaks this discrete symmetry. We find that the vector mesons can be very heavy while the colored top partners are relatively light ($>1.5$ TeV) to obtain a light Higgs.

Data-based wind disaster climate identification algorithm and extreme wind speed prediction

An extreme wind speed estimation method that considers wind hazard climate types is critical for design wind load calculation for building structures affected by mixed climates. However, it is very difficult to obtain wind hazard climate types from meteorological data records, because they restrict the application of extreme wind speed estimation in mixed climates. This paper first proposes a wind hazard type identification algorithm based on a numerical pattern recognition method that utilizes feature extraction and generalization. Next, it compares six commonly used machine learning models using K-fold cross-validation. Finally, it takes meteorological data from three locations near the southeast coast of China as examples to examine the algorithm performance. Based on classification results, the extreme wind speeds calculated based on mixed wind hazard types is compared with those obtained from conventional methods, and the effects on structural design for different return periods are discussed.

A Teflon-based system for applying multidirectional voltages to lipid bilayers as a novel platform for membrane proteins

Artificial bilayer lipid membranes (BLMs), along with patch-clamped membranes, are frequently used for functional analyses of membrane proteins. In both methods, the electric properties of membranes are characterized by only one parameter, namely, transmembrane potential. Here the construction of a novel BLM system was reported, in which membrane voltages can be controlled in a lateral direction in addition to conventional transmembrane direction. A microaperture was fabricated in a Teflon film and Ti electrodes were evaporated around the aperture. BLMs were reproducibly formed in the aperture without being affected by the presence of the electrodes. The application of a lateral voltage induced no significant changes in the electric properties of the BLMs, such as baseline current, transmembrane resistance, and transmembrane capacitance. In contrast, lateral voltages clearly affected the activities of biological ion channels, suggesting that the lateral voltage might be a useful parameter for analyzing channel activities. The present Teflon-based system in which multidirectional voltages can be applied to BLMs represent a promising platform for the analysis of underlying functional properties of membrane proteins.

Necessity for quantum coherence of nondegeneracy in energy flow

In this work, we show that the quantum coherence among non-degenerate energy subspaces (CANES) is essential for the energy flow in any quantum system. CANES satisfies almost all of the requirements as a coherence measure, except that the coherence within degenerate subspaces is explicitly eliminated. We show that the energy of a system becomes frozen if and only if the corresponding CANES vanishes, which is true regardless of the form of interaction with the environment. However, CANES can remain zero even if the entanglement changes over time. Furthermore, we show how the power of energy flow is bounded by the value of CANES. An explicit relation connecting the variation of energy and CANES is also presented. These results allow us to bound the generation of system-environment correlation through the local measurement of the system's energy flow.

Generating a Higgs Quartic

We present a simple mechanism for generating a Higgs quartic in composite Higgs models without a corresponding quadratic term. The extra quartic will originate from a Higgs dependent kinetic mixing between additional fermionic states. The mechanism can be naturally embedded to models with maximal symmetry as well as Twin Higgs models. The resulting Twin Higgs models will have a fully natural realistic Higgs potential, where the quartic mechanism will serve as the only source for the $Z_2$ breaking, while the top and gauge sectors can remain exactly $Z_2$ invariant.

Standard Model Effective Field Theory from On-shell Amplitudes

We present a general method of constructing unfactorizable on-shell amplitudes (amplitude basis), and build up their one-to-one correspondence to the independent and complete operator basis in effective field theory (EFT). We apply our method to the Standard Model EFT, and identify the amplitude basis in dimension 5 and 6, which correspond to the Weinberg operator and operators in Warsaw basis except for some linear combinations.

A Case for Asymmetric Non-Volatile Memory Architecture

The byte-addressable Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) is a promising technology since it simultaneously provides DRAM-like performance, disk-like capacity, and persistency. The current NVM deployment is symmetric, where NVM devices are directly attached to servers. Due to the higher density, NVM provides larger capacity and can be shared among servers. Unfortunately, in the symmetric setting, the availability of NVM devices is affected by the specific machine it is attached to. High availability can be realized by replicating data to NVM on a remote machine. However, it requires full replication of data structure in local memory, limiting the size of the working set. This paper rethinks NVM deployment and makes a case for the asymmetric NVM architecture, which decouples servers from persistent data storage. In the proposed AsymNVM architecture, NVM devices (back-end nodes) can be shared by multiple servers (front-end nodes) and provide recoverable persistent data structures. The asymmetric architecture is made possible by RDMA, and follows the recent industry trend of resource disaggregation. We build AsymNVM framework based on AsymNVM architecture that implements: 1) high performance persistent data structure update; 2) NVM data management; 3) concurrency control; and 4) crash-consistency and replication. The central idea is to use operation logs to reduce the stall due to RDMA writes and enable efficient batching and caching in front-end nodes. To evaluation performance, we construct eight widely used data structures and two applications based on AsymNVM framework, and use traces of industry workloads. In a cluster with ten machines, the results show that AsymNVM achieves comparable performance to the best possible symmetric architecture while avoiding all the drawbacks with disaggregation. Compared to the baseline AsymNVM, speedup brought by the proposed optimizations is 6~22x.
