T-duality on Almost Hermitian Spaces

We investigate T-duality transformation on an almost bi-hermitian space with torsion. By virtue of the Buscher rule, we completely describe not only the covariant derivative of geometrical objects but also the Nijenhuis tensor. We apply this description to an almost bi-hermitian space with isometry and investigate integrability on its T-dualized one. We find that hermiticity is not a sufficient condition to preserve integrability under T-duality transformations. However, in the presence of the K\"{a}hler condition, the T-dualized space still admits integrability of the almost complex structures. We also observe that the form of H-flux is suitable for string compactification scenarios.

On Geometries and Monodromies for Branes of Codimension Two

We study geometries for the NS5-, the KK5- and the $5^2_2$-branes of codimension two in type II and heterotic string theories. The geometries are classified by monodromies that each brane has. They are the $B$-, the general coordinate and the $β$-transformations of the spacetime metric, the $B$-field and the dilaton (and the gauge fields). We show that the monodromy nature appears also in the geometric quantities such as the curvature and the complex structures of spacetime. They are linearly realized in the doubled (generalized) structures in the doubled space.

Complex Structures, T-duality and Worldsheet Instantons in Born Sigma Models

We investigate doubled (generalized) complex structures in $2D$-dimensional Born geometries where T-duality symmetry is manifestly realized. We show that Kähler, hyperkähler, bi-hermitian and bi-hypercomplex structures of spacetime are implemented in Born geometries as doubled structures. We find that the Born structures and the generalized Kähler (hyperkähler) structures appear as subalgebras of bi-quaternions and split-tetra-quaternions. We find parts of these structures are classified by Clifford algebras. We then study the T-duality nature of the worldsheet instantons in Born sigma models. We show that the instantons in Kähler geometries are related to those in bi-hermitian geometries in a non-trivial way.

Worldsheet Instanton Corrections to Five-branes and Waves in Double Field Theory

We make a comprehensive study on the string winding corrections to supergravity solutions in double field theory (DFT). We find five-brane and wave solutions of diverse codimensions in which the winding coordinates are naturally included. We discuss a physical interpretation of the winding coordinate dependence. The analysis based on the geometric structures behind the solutions leads to an interpretation of the winding dependence as string worldsheet instanton corrections. We also give a brief discussion on the origins of these winding corrections in gauged linear sigma model. Our analysis reveals that for every supergravity solution, one has DFT solutions that include string winding corrections.

Hyperkähler, Bi-hypercomplex, Generalized Hyperkähler Structures and T-duality

We investigate comprehensive relations among T-duality, complex and bi-hermitian structures $(J_+, J_-)$ in two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} =(2,2)$ sigma models with/without twisted chiral multiplets. The bi-hermitian structures $(J_+,J_-)$ embedded in generalized Kähler structures $(\mathcal{J}_+,\mathcal{J}_-)$ are organized into the algebra of the tri-complex numbers. We newly write down an analogue of the Buscher rule by which the T-duality transformation of the bi-hermitian and Kähler structures are apparent. We also study the bi-hypercomplex and hyperkähler cases in $\mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ theories. They are expressed, as a T-duality covariant fashion, in the generalized hyperkähler structures and form the split-bi-quaternion algebras. As a concrete example, we show the explicit T-duality relation between the hyperkähler structures of the KK-monopole (Taub-NUT space) and the bi-hypercomplex structures of the H-monopole (smeared NS5-brane). Utilizing this result, we comment on a T-duality relation for the worldsheet instantons in these geometries.

Localized Kaluza-Klein 6-brane

We study the membrane wrapping mode corrections to the Kaluza-Klein (KK) 6-brane in eleven dimensions. We examine the localized KK6-brane in the extended space in $E_{7(7)}$ exceptional field theory. In order to discuss the physical origin of the localization in the extended space, we consider a probe M2-brane in eleven dimensions. We show that a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 4$ gauge theory is naturally interpreted as a membrane generalization of the two-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the fundamental string. We point out that the vector field in the $\mathcal{N}= 4$ model is identified as a dual coordinate of the KK6-brane geometry. We find that the BPS vortex in the gauge theory gives rise to the violation of the isometry along the dual direction. We then show that the vortex corrections are regarded as an instanton effect in M-theory induced by the probe M2-brane wrapping around the M-circle.

Semi-doubled Gauged Linear Sigma Model for Five-branes of Codimension Two

We establish a double dualization in two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory. We construct a gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) which contains a complex twisted linear superfield coupled to two sets of Abelian vector superfields. In the IR regime, the GLSM provides a string sigma model whose target spaces are a defect NS5-brane, a Kaluza-Klein vortex and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. All of them are five-branes of codimension two and are related by T-duality. This model is a natural extension of the GLSM proposed by Tong which gives a sigma model for an H-monopole, i.e., a smeared NS5-brane of codimension three. This is also regarded as an alternative system of the GLSM for exotic five-branes proposed by the present authors. In this analysis, we confirm that the T-duality transformation procedure in terms of the complex twisted linear superfield is applicable to dualize both the real and imaginary parts of the twisted chiral superfield even at the UV level, beyond the IR limit. This indicates that the T-duality transformations at finite gauge couplings can be performed in terms of reducible superfields in the same way as irreducible (twisted) chiral superfields. Furthermore, we study quantum vortex corrections to the GLSM at the UV level. In the IR limit, these corrections are mapped to string worldsheet instanton corrections to the five-branes of codimension two. The result completely agrees with those in double field theory analysis.

Weaving the Exotic Web

String and M-theory contain a family of branes forming U-duality multiplets. In particular, standard branes with codimension higher than or equal to two, can be explicitly found as supergravity solutions. However, whether domain-wall branes and space-filling branes can be found as supergravity solutions is still unclear. In this paper, we firstly provide a full list of exotic branes in type II string theory or M-theory compactified to three or higher dimensions. We show how to systematically obtain backgrounds of exotic domain-wall branes and space-filling branes as solutions of the double field theory or the exceptional field theory. Such solutions explicitly depend on the winding coordinates and cannot be given as solutions of the conventional supergravity theories. However, as the domain-wall solutions depend linearly on the winding coordinates, we describe them as solutions of deformed supergravities such as the Romans massive IIA supergravity or lower-dimensional gauged supergravities. We establish explicit relations among the domain-wall branes, the mixed-symmetry potentials, the locally non-geometric fluxes, and deformed supergravities.

Explicit Description of the Zassenhaus Formula

We explicitly describe an expansion of $e^{A+B}$ as an infinite sum of the products of $B$ multiplied by the exponential function of $A$. This is the explicit description of the Zassenhaus formula. We also express the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula in a different manner.

Nonlocal N=1 Supersymmetry

We construct $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric nonlocal theories in four dimension. We discuss higher derivative extensions of chiral and vector superfields, and write down generic forms of Kähler potential and superpotential up to quadratic order. We derive the condition in which an auxiliary field remains non-dynamical, and the dynamical scalars and fermions are free from the ghost degrees of freedom. We also investigate the nonlocal effects on the supersymmetry breaking and find that supertrace (mass) formula is significantly modified even at the tree level.

Supersymmetry Projection Rules on Exotic Branes

We study the supersymmetry projection rules on exotic branes in type II string theories and M-theory. They justify the validity of the exotic duality between standard branes and exotic branes of codimension two. By virtue of the supersymmetry projection rules on various branes, we can consider a system that involves multiple non-parallel exotic branes in the nongeometric background.

Exotic Brane Junctions from F-theory

Applying string dualities to F-theory, we obtain various $[p,q]$-branes whose constituents are standard branes of codimension two and exotic branes. We construct junctions of the exotic five-branes and their Hanany-Witten transitions associated with those in F-theory. In this procedure, we understand the monodromy of the single $5^2_2$-brane. We also find the objects which are sensitive to the branch cut of the $5^2_2$-brane. Considering the web of branes in the presence of multiple exotic five-branes analogous to the web of five-branes with multiple seven-branes, we obtain novel brane constructions for $SU(2)$ gauge theories with $n$ flavors and their superconformal limit with enhanced $E_{n+1}$ symmetry in five, four, and three dimensions. Hence, adapting the techniques of the seven-branes to the exotic branes, we will be able to construct F-theories in diverse dimensions.

World-volume Effective Action of Exotic Five-brane in M-theory

We study the world-volume effective action of an exotic five-brane, known as the M-theory 5${}^3$-brane (M5${}^3$-brane) in eleven dimensions. The supermultiplet of the world-volume theory is the $\mathcal{N} = (2, 0)$ tensor multiplet in six dimensions. The world-volume action contains three Killing vectors $\hat{k}_{\hat{I}} {}^M \ (\hat{I} =1,2,3)$ associated with the $U(1)^3$ isometry. We find the effective T-duality rule for the eleven-dimensional backgrounds that transforms the M5-brane effective action to that of the M5${}^3$-brane. We also show that our action provides the source term for the M5${}^3$-brane geometry in eleven-dimensional supergravity

Gauge-fixing Condition on Prepotential of Chiral Multiplet for Nongeometric Backgrounds

We study a supergauge transformation of a complex superfield which generates a chiral superfield in two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ theory. This complex superfield is referred to as the prepotential of the chiral superfield. Since there exist redundant component fields in the prepotential, we remove some of them by a gauge-fixing condition. This situation is parallel to that of a vector superfield. In order to obtain a suitable configuration of the GLSM for the exotic five-brane which gives rise to a nongeometric background, we impose a relatively relaxed gauge-fixing condition. It turns out that the gauge-fixed prepotential is different from a semichiral superfield whose scalar field represents a coordinate of generalized Kähler geometry.

Semi-doubled Sigma Models for Five-branes

We study two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ gauge theory and its dualized system in terms of complex (linear) superfields and their alternatives. Although this technique itself is not new, we can obtain a new model, the so-called "semi-doubled" GLSM. Similar to doubled sigma model, this involves both the original and dual degrees of freedom simultaneously, whilst the latter only contribute to the system via topological interactions. Applying this to the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ GLSM for H-monopoles, i.e., smeared NS5-branes, we obtain its T-dualized systems in quite an easy way. As a bonus, we also obtain the semi-doubled GLSM for an exotic $5^3_2$-brane whose background is locally nongeometric. In the low energy limit, we construct the semi-doubled NLSM which also generates the conventional string worldsheet sigma models. In the case of the NLSM for $5^3_2$-brane, however, we find that the Dirac monopole equation does not make sense any more because the physical information is absorbed into the divergent part via the smearing procedure. This is nothing but the signal which indicates that the nongeometric feature emerges in the considering model.

World-volume Effective Actions of Exotic Five-branes

We construct world-volume effective actions of exotic $5^2_2$-branes in type IIA and IIB string theories. The effective actions are given in fully space-time covariant forms with two Killing vectors associated with background isometries. The effective theories are governed by the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ tensor multiplet and $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ vector multiplet, respectively. Performing the S-duality transformation to the $5^2_2$-brane effective action in type IIB string theory, we also work out the world-volume action of the $5^2_3$-brane. We discuss some additional issues relevant to the exotic five-branes in type I and heterotic string theories.

N=(4,4) Gauged Linear Sigma Models for Defect Five-branes

We study two-dimensional ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model (GLSM). Its low energy effective theory is a nonlinear sigma model whose target space gives rise to a configuration of five-branes in string theory. In this article we focus on sigma models for NS5-branes, KK5-branes and an exotic $5^2_2$-brane. In particular, we carefully analyze the GLSM for an exotic $5^2_2$-brane whose background configuration is multi-valued. The exotic $5^2_2$-brane is a concrete example of nongeometric configuration in string theory. We find that the exotic feature originates from the string winding coordinate in a very clear way. In order to complete this analysis, we propose a duality transformation formula which converts an ${\cal N}=(2,2)$ chiral superfield in F-term to a twisted chiral superfield coupled to an unconstrained complex superfield. This article is a short review based on arXiv:1304.4061 in collaboration with Shin Sasaki.

Hyper-Kähler with Torsion, T-duality, and Defect (p,q) Five-branes

We investigate a five-branes interpretation of hyper-Kähler geometry with torsion (HKT). This geometry is obtained by conformal transformation of the Taub-NUT space which represents a Kaluza-Klein five-brane. This HKT would represent an NS5-brane on the Taub-NUT space. In order to explore the HKT further, we compactify one transverse direction, and study the $O(2,2;{\mathbb Z}) = SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ monodromy structure associated with two-torus. Performing the conjugate transformation, we obtain a new solution whose physical interpretation is a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane on the ALG space. Throughout this analysis, we understand that the HKT represents a coexistent state of two kinds of five-branes. This situation is different from composite states such as $(p,q)$ five-branes or $(p,q)$ seven-branes in type IIB theory. We also study the T-dualized system of the HKT. We again find a new solution which also indicates another defect $(p,q)$ five-brane on the ALG space.
