Defect (p,q) Five-branes

We study a local description of composite five-branes of codimension two. The formulation is constructed by virtue of $SL(2,{\mathbb Z}) \times SL(2,{\mathbb Z)}$ monodromy associated with two-torus. Applying conjugate monodromy transformations to the complex structures of the two-torus, we obtain a field configuration of a defect $(p,q)$ five-brane. This is a composite state of $p$ defect NS5-branes and $q$ exotic $5^2_2$-branes. We also obtain a new example of hyper-Kähler geometry. This is an ALG space, a generalization of an ALF space which asymptotically has a tri-holomorphic two-torus action. This geometry appears in the conjugate configuration of a single defect KK5-brane.

T-duality Transformation of Gauged Linear Sigma Model with F-term

We develop the duality transformation rules in two-dimensional theories in the superfield formalism. Even if the chiral superfield which we dualize involves an F-term, we can dualize it by virtue of the property of chiral superfields. We apply the duality transformation rule of the neutral chiral superfield to the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for five-branes. We also investigate the duality transformation rule of the charged chiral superfield in the ${\cal N} = (4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the $A_1$-type ALE space. In both cases we obtain the dual Lagrangians in the superfield formalism. In the low energy limit we find that their duality transformations are interpreted as T-duality transformations consistent with the Buscher rule.

Gauged Linear Sigma Model with F-term for A-type ALE Space

We construct yet another ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ gauged linear sigma model for the $A_N$-type ALE space. In our construction the toric data of the ALE space are manifest. Due to the $SU(2)_R$ symmetry, the F-term is automatically determined. The toric data, which govern the Kähler structures of the ALE space, are embedded into $U(1)$ charges of charged hypermultiplets. The F-term is also inevitable to determine the complex structures of the ALE space. In the IR limit, we obtain the Kähler potential of the $A_N$-type ALE space. We also find the origin of the ${\mathbb Z}_{N+1}$ orbifold symmetry in the singular limit of the $A_N$-type ALE space. In a special case, we reproduce an explicit form of the Kähler potential of the $A_1$-type ALE space, i.e., the Eguchi-Hanson space.

Worldsheet Description of Exotic Five-brane with Two Gauged Isometries

We study the string worldsheet description of the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane where two isometries are gauged. This is an extension of the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) for the exotic $5^2_2$-brane with a single gauged isometry. The new GLSM with two gauged isometries has only ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry rather than ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry of the original GLSM. This is caused by a conflict between two different $SU(2)_R$ associated with the two gauge symmetries. However, if we take a certain limit, we can find the genuine string sigma model of the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane with ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetry. We also investigate the worldsheet instanton corrections to the background geometry of the exotic $5^2_2$-brane. The worldsheet instanton corrections to the string sigma model can be traced in terms of the two gauge fields in the new GLSM. This new GLSM gives rise to a different feature of the quantum corrections from the one in the GLSM with the single gauged isometry.

Gauged Linear Sigma Model for Exotic Five-brane

We study an N=(4,4) supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model which gives rise to the nonlinear sigma model for multi-centered KK-monopoles. We find a new T-duality transformation of the model even in the presence of F-terms. Performing T-duality, we find the gauged linear sigma model whose IR limit describes the exotic 522-brane with B-field.

Worldsheet Instanton Corrections to 522-brane Geometry

We study worldsheet instanton corrections to the exotic 522-brane geometry in type II string theory. The BPS vortices in the N=(4,4) gauged linear sigma model modify the geometry of the 522-brane. We find that the modification of the geometry is understood by the localization in the T-dualized winding direction.

Canonical approach to Courant brackets for D-branes

We present an extension of the Courant bracket to the ones for Dp-branes by analyzing Hamiltonians and local superalgebras. Contrast to the basis of the bracket for a fundamental string which consists of the momentum and the winding modes, the ones for Dp-branes contain higher rank R-R coupling tensors. We show that the R-R gauge transformation rules are obtained by these Courant brackets for Dp-branes where the Dirac-Born-Infeld gauge field and the "two-vierbein field" play an essential role. Canonical analysis of the worldvolume theories naturally gives the basis of the brackets and the target space backgrounds keeping T-duality manifest at least for NS-NS sector. In a D3-brane analysis S-duality is manifest as a symmetry of interchanging the NS-NS coupling and the R-R coupling.

On Static Charged Black Holes in Type IIA on a Nearly-Kahler Coset

We study static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity with one vector multiplet and one hyper-tensor multiplet. This is derived from massive type IIA theory compactified on the nearly-Kahler coset space G2/SU(3). It is well-known that the Romans' mass parameter yields the Stuckelberg-type deformation of the gauge field strengths in the four-dimensional system. This deformation requires that all the (covariant) derivatives of the scalar fields must vanish and the two-form field is closed. It turns out that charged solutions are forbidden. This implies that only AdS vacua or Schwarzschild-AdS black holes are allowed as the static, spherically symmetric solutions.

Schwarzschild-AdS Black Holes in N=2 Geometric Flux Compactification

We present AdS black hole solutions in four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity with the universal hypermultiplet. Here the axion field in this multiplet is dualized to a two-form field. This system is derived from ten-dimensional massive type IIA theory compactified on nearly-Kahler manifold in the presence of geometric fluxes and RR-fluxes. In this work we focus on the simplest coset space G_2/SU(3). Imposing the covariantly constant condition on all scalar fields, we obtain AdS black hole solutions with vanishing electromagnetic charges and arbitrary mass parameter.

Non-supersymmetric Extremal RN-AdS Black Holes in N=2 Gauged Supergravity

We investigate extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black holes in four-dimensional N=2 abelian gauged supergravity. We find a new attractor equation which is not reduced to the one in the asymptotically flat spacetime. Focusing on so-called the T^3-model with a single neutral vector multiplet, we obtain non-supersymmetric extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole solutions with regular event horizon in the D0-D4 and the D2-D6 charge configurations. The negative cosmological constant emerges even without the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. Furthermore, we also argue the formal description of the non-supersymmetric black hole solutions of the T^3-model and the STU-model in generic configurations.

Chiral Generations on Intersecting 5-branes in Heterotic String Theory

We show that there exist two 27 and one 27 bar of E6, net one D=4, N=1 chiral matter supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersection of two 5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. The smeared intersecting 5-brane solution is used via the standard embedding to construct a heterotic background, which provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse dimensions, a five-dimensional Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in heterotic string theory. As a by-product, we present a new proof of anomaly cancellation between those from the chiral matter and the anomaly inflow onto the brane without small instanton.

Chiral Zero Modes on Intersecting Heterotic 5-branes

We show that there exist two 27 and one 27bar of E6, net one chiral supermultiplet as zero modes localized on the intersecting 5-branes in the E8 x E8 heterotic string theory. A heterotic background is constructed by the standard embedding in the smeared solution, and the Dirac equation is solved explicitly on this background. It provides, after a compactification of some of the transverse dimensions, a Randall-Sundrum II like brane-world set-up in heterotic string theory.

D-branes and doubled geometry

We define the open string version of the nonlinear sigma model on doubled geometry introduced by Hull and Reid-Edwards, and derive its boundary conditions. These conditions include the restriction of D-branes to maximally isotropic submanifolds as well as a compatibility condition with the Lie algebra structure on the doubled space. We demonstrate a systematic method to derive and classify D-branes from the boundary conditions, in terms of embeddings both in the doubled geometry and in the physical target space. We apply it to the doubled three-torus with constant H-flux and find D0-, D1-, and D2-branes, which we verify transform consistently under T-dualities mapping the system to f-, Q- and R-flux backgrounds.

AdS Vacua, Attractor Mechanism and Generalized Geometries

We consider flux vacua attractor equations in type IIA string theory compactified on generalized geometries with orientifold projections. The four-dimensional N=1 superpotential in this compactification can be written as the sum of the Ramond-Ramond superpotential and a term described by (non)geometric flux charges. We exhibit a simple model in which supersymmetric AdS and Minkowski solutions are classified by means of discriminants of the two superpotentials. We further study various configurations without Ramond-Ramond flux charges. In this case we find supersymmetric AdS vacua both in the case of compactifications on generalized geometries with SU(3) x SU(3) structures and on manifolds with an SU(3)-structure without nongeometric flux charges. In the latter case, we have to introduce correction terms into the prepotential in order to realize consistent vacua.

Type IIA orientifolds and orbifolds on non-factorizable tori

We investigate Type II orientifolds on non-factorizable torus with and without its oribifolding. We explicitly calculate the Ramond-Ramond tadpole from string one-loop amplitudes, and confirm that the consistent number of orientifold planes is directly derived from the Lefschetz fixed point theorem. We furthermore classify orientifolds on non-factorizable Z_N x Z_M orbifolds, and construct new supersymmetric Type IIA orientifold models on them.

Index Theorems on Torsional Geometries

We study various topological invariants on a torsional geometry in the presence of a totally anti-symmetric torsion H under the closed condition dH = 0, which appears in string theory compactification scenarios. By using the identification between the Clifford algebra on the geometry and the canonical quantization condition of fermions in quantum mechanics, we construct N=1 quantum mechanical sigma model in the Hamiltonian formalism. We extend this model to N=2 system, equipped with the totally anti-symmetric tensor associated with the torsion on the target space geometry. Next we construct transition elements in the Lagrangian path integral formalism and apply them to the analyses of the Witten indices in supersymmetric systems. We explicitly show the formulation of the Dirac index on the torsional manifold which has already been studied. We also formulate the Euler characteristic and the Hirzebruch signature on the torsional manifold.

Comments on Heterotic Flux Compactifications

In heterotic flux compactification with supersymmetry, three different connections with torsion appear naturally, all in the form $ω+a H$. Supersymmetry condition carries $a=-1$, the Dirac operator has $a=-1/3$, and higher order term in the effective action involves $a=1$. With a view toward the gauge sector, we explore the geometry with such torsions. After reviewing the supersymmetry constraints and finding a relation between the scalar curvature and the flux, we derive the squared form of the zero mode equations for gauge fermions. With $\d H=0$, the operator has a positive potential term, and the mass of the unbroken gauge sector appears formally positive definite. However, this apparent contradiction is avoided by a no-go theorem that the compactification with $H\neq 0$ and $\d H=0$ is necessarily singular, and the formal positivity is invalid. With $\d H\neq 0$, smooth compactification becomes possible. We show that, at least near smooth supersymmetric solution, the size of $H^2$ should be comparable to that of $\d H$ and the consistent truncation of action has to keep $α'R^2$ term. A warp factor equation of motion is rewritten with $α' R^2$ contribution included precisely, and some limits are considered.

Gauged Linear Sigma Models for Noncompact Calabi-Yau Varieties

We study gauged linear sigma models for noncompact Calabi-Yau manifolds described as a line bundle on a hypersurface in a projective space. This gauge theory has a unique phase if the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter is positive, while there exist two distinct phases if the parameter is negative. We find four massless effective theories in the infrared limit, which are related to each other under the Calabi-Yau/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence and the topology change. In the T-dual theory, on the other hand, we obtain two types of exact massless effective theories: One is the sigma model on a newly obtained Calabi-Yau geometry as a mirror dual, while the other is given by a Landau-Ginzburg theory with a negative power term, indicating N=2 superconformal field theory on SL(2,R)/U(1). We argue that the effective theories in the original gauged linear sigma model are exactly realized as N=2 Liouville theories coupled to well-defined Landau-Ginzburg minimal models.
